The prefix Al- before -lah means/equivalent to the English word "the". As a Semitic language, the Arabic "Al" is equivalent to the Hebrew word "El".

Example:
El-Shaddai: the Strong One
El-ohim(p)/El-oha(s) : the god/God

Hence, Al-lah actually mean "the god/God"!
