Nairaland / General / Nigeria Is My ‘mother’ by akinze100(m): 10:47am On Jul 27, 2017 |
ONE of the leading Nigerian performing poets, Dike Chukwumerije, has lent his voice to the calls for unity in Nigeria in the midst of recent calls by styled representatives of ethnic groups calling for dissolution of the country. Speaking ahead of his next “Made in Nigeria” performance poetry show slated to hold at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on July 29, 2017, Dike described the calls as unwarranted because the average Nigerian today is a product of shared experiences drawn from multiple sections of the country and the uniqueness of the character of the Nigerian is a result of his/her interactions with other Nigerians over time. “Call me what you will, but Nigeria is my mother. She is responsible for it all. If I amaze you with this ability to constantly pull light out of darkness, to combat recession with a heady mixture of kokoma and gyration, to climb out of any pit you throw me into, and instantly become recognizable anywhere I go, it is also because of this, that I was shaped by her contradictions and forged in the fierce furnace of her womb, so that somewhere on my soul, burned into its very essence, is a stamp no adversity or hate-filled speech will ever erase… And it reads, simply: ‘MADE IN NIGERIA’”, Dike said while speaking to journalists recently, emphasizing the need to avoid that dangerous tendency to stereotype others that has been at the root of many of Nigerian’s modern conflicts.

Romance / Nigerian Sex Workers Association Want Govt To Legalise Prostitution by akinze100(m): 10:22am On Jul 27, 2017 |
The Nigerian Sex Workers Association has called on the Federal Government to decriminalise prostitution, saying such would curb the spread of HIV. The association added that HIV infection had continued to increase because the government treated prostitution as a crime. It stated that law enforcement agents, especially the police, consequently harassed sex workers and sometimes demand sex without using condoms. The National Coordinator of the association, Amaka Enemo, said this in Abuja on Wednesday during an interview with journalists at the presentation of a report titled, ‘Understanding the High Risk of Urban Sexual Networks in Nigeria.’ Enemo was said to have played an active role in gathering information for the report, which was compiled by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, the University of Manitoba, United States, and the World Bank. She said, “Sex workers face violence, especially from their clients and law enforcement agents. Sex work is seen as a crime and the police raid streets and brothels to arrest sex workers. They collect money and if the girl cannot pay money, she will have to give sex to the policemen. If the law enforcer does not want to use condom, the sex worker has to agree and this is why HIV is on the increase. “So, in this study, all the sex workers we interacted with said their biggest trouble was law enforcers.” The 36-year-old said several studies had shown that countries where prostitution is not illegal had lower cases of sexually transmitted diseases, while Nigeria, where it is illegal, had one of the highest rates of HIV in the world. She said sex work should be made legal, and government should not saddle sex workers with the responsibility of paying tax. Enemo said, “When I visited Amsterdam (Holland), I was able to visit the red light district where sex workers work because prostitution is legal there. I have also visited New Zealand where they have decriminalised sex work. “When you decriminalise it, there will be less exploitation of sex workers and the violence will reduce.” Emeno said since HIV is a communicable disease and had no cure, sex workers should be given proper treatment and not victimised. She said an infected sex worker could directly or indirectly infect as many as 100 people, adding that the government must not hound, but partner them. Emeno added, “Decriminalise the work so that all of us will be healthy. It might interest you to know that Nigeria has the second highest risk of HIV worldwide and we are hoping to get to zero before 2030. “How can it end when the drivers of the epidemic are being criminalised?” In his remarks, the Director, Strategic Knowledge Management, NACA , Dr Kayode Ogungbemi, said sex workers must be taken seriously since married men also patronised them. He said the message of use of protection must also be taken to mega stores and other places where sexual relationships began. Ogungbemi added, “This report looks at the history of casual sex, transactional sex and commercial sex. If we do not reach these women, the infection will continue to spread. So, we must teach these women the use of condoms and going for HIV tests because if we don’t do that, they will continue to spread it. Even married people patronise them.” Also speaking, the Country Coordinator, Centre for Global Public Health, University of Manitoba, Dr. Kalada Green, said the exercise, which was funded by the World Bank, was done in order to improve the efficiency of HIV prevention methods.

Crime / Butcher Bags 30 Days Jail Sentence For Stealing Goat by akinze100(m): 9:14am On Jul 27, 2017 |
A Minna magistrate’s court in Niger State, yesterday, sentenced a butcher, Abdulrahman Umaru, to 30 days imprisonment for stealing a goat. Umaru, 28, was earlier arraigned on a count charge of theft, contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code. In her ruling, Magistrate Amina Musa said the prosecution had proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt and that she had also taken note of the guilty plea of the accused. Musa, therefore, convicted Umaru of the offence and sentenced him to 30 days in prison. The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine. Musa also ordered Umaru to pay N25,000 to the complainant as restitution for the goat that was stolen. The prosecutor, Inspector Alfred Auta, had told the court that one Amina Mohammed of Maitumbi in Minna had reported the matter at the police station on July 24. Auta said Mohammed reported that Umaru had stolen a goat belonging to her, valued at N25,000 and slaughtered it in a uncompleted building. When the charge was read to Umaru he pleaded guilty, but urged the court to show him mercy. Consequently, the prosecutor urged the court to summarily try the convict in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code. He also prayed the court to order Umaru to pay N25,000 as restitution to the complai-nant for the stolen goat.

Nairaland / General / Lagos Crucial To Nigeria's Economic Stability, Growth – World Bank by akinze100(m): 6:03pm On Jul 13, 2017 |
The World Bank on Thursday said that the role of Lagos to Nigeria’s stability and growth could not be overemphasized, as the State remains the economic gateway to the country and for the rest of the world. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode Country Director of World Bank, Mr. Rachid Benmessaoud who spoke when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Lagos House in Ikeja, said the giant strides being recorded by the present administration in the State had received global attention, adding that the World Bank was proud to be part of the transformation. “Nigeria needs Lagos, Lagos is a huge part of the growth for the country and the growth is about job creation and stability of the country. We are really honored to have been your partner and we would be honoured to continue the partnership. “We really acknowledge the national, regional and local importance of Lagos being the gateway to Nigeria and for the rest of the world. There is a success story that is being told not only in Nigeria but globally and that success story is really thanks to the leadership that you (Ambode) brings in with a clarity of vision and also the speed by which you take decisions and implement programmes and projects,” Benmessaoud said. He attested to the fact that the engagements the World Bank have had with Lagos have been unique in Nigeria, noting that as the existing partnerships were coming to a close, they were looking at other opportunities to build on the positive momentum and partner the State on its urban regeneration drive. “We are closing our ongoing portfolio which is very small right now, we would very much like to support you and go for the next generation of programmes that are responsive for your vision. We are very pleased to partner with you as you set an agenda for a transformative State,” He said the visit to the Governor, therefore, was to explore ways to build on the existing partnerships in the areas of transportation, energy and the environment towards meeting the growing demands of residents as well as attract more investors into the State. “The objective of the visit is to maintain and capitalize on the positive momentum that we have created through our partnership over many years and also to see how we can leverage that partnership in helping you, supporting you achieving your vision for the urban transformation in Lagos State that will enable you to create a livable city, bringing more jobs that will not only retain and expand the existing businesses but also attract new businesses and generate more revenue for the State and attracting the private sector,” he said. Responding, Governor Ambode thanked the World Bank for their partnership over the years, noting that they have contributed immensely to the success story of Lagos State, especially in the transportation sector. Alluding to the fact that Lagos was the first State in Nigeria to receive budget support from the World Bank, the Governor commended the successful execution of the three Development Policy Operations (DPOs), saying that the State has been able to show evidence that the partnership had been very successful. “It’s been very fruitful and we’ve become totally responsive to ensure that whatever it is that we are getting in terms of support from multilateral institutions, we show credibility also to show that we plan well for such support and we are willing to also continue to abide by international standard to ensure that whatever it is we are getting as support, it is used for the common good of every citizen in Lagos which is the whole essence of service,” the Governor said. Governor Ambode also said that his administration has fashioned out a work plan to integrate water, rail and road transport system to evolve a viable means through Lagosians can commute within the State with ease. “I think the new sets of proposal are the kind of strategy we should put for Lagos State and that’s what this visit speaks to. I will like to see a strong support in the transport sector, so that we have support for water, rail and other infrastructure that goes with it. Like I said, we already have a work plan that integrates the three together which we would share with the World Bank and also improve on our discussions in terms of advisory management, financing and also different kind of support that ultimately help us to deliver the dividends of democracy that we actually promised our people. “We are very serious that we want to improve on transportation, improve on environment and also power because we believe that’s the whole essence of making the State investor friendly. We have improved a lot on security and we just think that moving 23 million people on a daily basis in a comfortable way would mean that we will have to integrate our transport management system in such a way that you can move actually on water, using the rail also and then the road,” he said. 1 Like

Computers / Ghana Launches Its First Satellite Into Space by akinze100(m): 1:16am On Jul 09, 2017 |
Ghana has successfully launched its first satellite into space. GhanaSat-1, which was developed by students at All Nations University in Koforidua, was sent into orbit from the International Space Centre. Cheers erupted as 400 people, including the engineers, gathered in the southern Ghanaian city to watch live pictures of the launch. The first signal was received shortly afterwards. It is the culmination of a two-year project, costing $50,000 (£40,000). It received support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The satellite will be used to monitor Ghana's coastline for mapping purposes, and to build capacity in space science and technology. Project coordinator Dr Richard Damoah said it marked a new beginning for the country. "It has opened the door for us to do a lot of activities from space," he told the BBC. He said it would "also help us train the upcoming generation on how to apply satellites in different activities around our region. "For instance, [monitoring] illegal mining is one of the things we are looking to accomplish. Source BBC 1 Like 1 Share
