Well I guess the case is for Magi to clear himself. If the dSS can submit a discrediting report to the Senate's it's incumbent on Mr. Magu to prove himself innocent or be replaced.

I know it's all really politics, some powers that be want him changed, though as Mr Akeredolu put it; a precedence has been set and should be followed. Clearance should be sought from the senate or the Constitution amended.
I think Magu goofed when he had the opportunity to clear himself. At his confirmation, the Senate drew his attention to the allegations made by the DSS and asked him to comment. all he said was that he had replied the query to the Presidency.

if he was not guilty, he would have cleared himself instantly and even rubbished DSS Report.

but he relied solely on what lawyers wrote for him to forward to the President. he doesn't even know the content, he would have released some for the senators.

his performance was even woeful, abysmal, below average. i like his guts, but im sure his children will not be proud of what they saw, if they actually watched him.

The Governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) and replace him with a more competent and generally acceptable candidate. The Governor who made the call when he featured on a radio programme anchored on Saturday by Fresh FM Ibadan stated that his position was based on his rejection by the Senate.

Gov. Akeredolu explained that they are over 1, 001 persons who can effectively discharge the duties of the Chairman of the Commission. He said the legal tussle on whether the Chairman of the Commission needed to be cleared by the Senate was unnecessary since there was an established practice.

According to him “... my take on this is: If the Senate did not need to clear him, why was his name sent there in the first instance? The Presidency must clear the air on that. Then the argument changed that his clearance is in the EFCC Act and not in the constitution. But it is there. Is the Act in conflict with the constitution? If it is not, then you have to apply it. It is a gray area for now and needs the imprimatur of the Supreme Court to decide where we go from there.

The Supreme Court can ask the question: Have you had an EFCC chairman who was not cleared by the Senate? That can be raised. It can say then we have established a convention that he must be cleared. The clearance is provided for in the EFCC Act and so why don’t we go by it?"

“The Supreme Court can also explain if the provision in the EFCC Act is in conflict with the constitution it will explain how that happens. We have wonderful Judges everywhere and the way we give interpretation is different. It may be subjective For me, I know what I believe. I don’t see any reason for instance why the clearance must not be sought. If the Senate decides it will not clear Magu, then the Presidency should pick another person,” he added.

The Managing Director of Capital Oil, Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah has been released unconditionally from custody by officials of Department of State Services after a "no case" was established at the end of investigation.

Ubah who was released last night by the DSS was arrested and charged with economic sabotage after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) claimed that he criminally diverted N11bn worth of petroleum product kept in his tank farm in Lagos.

Ubah had admitted that the Corporation stored petroleum product in his farm but stated that he sold the product to address the scarcity that confronted Nigeria after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, apart from averting the crisis that would have destabilized the young administration, his action was also aimed at recovering the debt he was being owed by the NNPC.

He explained that the NNPC owed Capital Oil N11bn, an amount he deducted from the N16bn realized from the sale of the product. He described the case against him as mere issue of counterbalancing.

So Magu folo corrupt?
PoliticsMagu And His Illegal Invasion Of Sun Newspaper- Babagana by akpanoka(op): 6:22am On Jun 15, 2017
Edmund Burke is believed to have first used the term “Fourth Estate of the Realm” to describe print journalism during a parliamentary debate in Britain in 1787. At that time, there were only three traditional estates of the realm in the British Parliament - the Lord Spiritual, the Lord Temporal and the Commons. However, in order to drive home an important element outside the traditional power structure and branches of government, Burke referred to the gallery where reporters sat as the fourth estate of the realm.
He described journalists as the conscience of democracy and symbol of a free society, where the fundamental rights of citizens must be exercised without fear or inhibition. The media has since evolved so much so that an attack on free press is an attack on democracy, which must be roundly resisted.

For several years, even during military regimes, Nigeria is known to have had a relatively active press with very little censorship. The media has become robust and keeps evolving on positive scale since the return of democracy in 1999. Even though President Muhammadu Buhari has been repeatedly derided by sections of the media, he has never ordered a clamp down on the press. Such is the beauty of democracy. However recent attack on press freedom by the EFCC represents a clear departure from the norms, a very dangerous trend, and a fundamental threat to democracy.

Particularly, the illegal invasion of the Sun Newspaper by the EFCC is a clear demonstration that Magu has taken the “corruption war” beyond the mandate of the law and constitutional responsibility of the Commission. Indeed he has become a lord unto himself. This is because impeding press freedom the way Magu has so far done is a direct affront on democracy and must be resisted by well meaning Nigerians, including human right groups, lawyers and the media.

As widely reported, Magu’s attack on the Sun is connected to a personal grouse he has with some journalists who are about publishing some damaging reports on his shady activities while he was Head of Operations under Ibrahim Lamorde, including ongoing investigation into a multi-million naira Abuja property traceable to his wife.

Interestingly, the Sun Newspaper is not the only media house Magu has penned down for attack. Reliable sources within the Commission who begged for anonymity disclosed that Thisday Newspaper and two other newspaper houses may sooner or later face the wrath of Magu who has concluded plans to shut them down indefinitely. Magu is said not to be working alone on this, as he is being assisted by his cronies in reputable media organizations in the country. These cronies who are on the payroll of the EFCC boss have obviously sold their hearts to the devil, as they align with Magu to destroy the very institution they represent.

The truth is that time has come for President Muhammadu Buhari to take a decisive action on Magu. This is the first time a media house will be directly invaded in the manner which Magu has done, thereby worsening the administration’s human right record. At a time human right issues in the country have come under intense scrutiny from the international community, such tyrannical behaviour must not be condoned, but decisively dealt with.

Freedom of the press remains the strongest testimony of Nigeria’s democracy. Therefore, human rights groups, including the media and all lovers of democracy and even the government must rise and put a stop to Magu’s excesses and tyrannical behaviour which are threatening our collective liberty.

We don’t have to wait till irredeemable damage is done before we rise and protect our hard-earned democracy from impostors like Ibrahim Magu who has now constituted himself as nuance to our collective freedom and wellbeing.
Enough is Enough!

PoliticsOjukwu, Kanu And The Hypocrisy Of Marginalization - Part 1 by akpanoka(op): 8:40pm On Jun 12, 2017
I grew up at a time when the Igbo ethnic nationality considered itself as the most marginalized specie in the entity called Nigeria. The sentiment has always been strong, the arguments sensational, the debate unending, as renewed clamour by IPOB for the secession of the South-East gains fresh momentum.

But the QUESTION is, Are the Igbos Really Marginalized?

One of the books I had the privilege of reading early in life was a historical review of events preceding the Nigerian Civil War in 1967. In my opinion, the book titled “13 Years of Military Rule” by James O. Ojiako, gives the fairest account of events that preceded the Nigerian Independence in 1960, the 1963 political crisis and its aftermath, the coup and counter coup of 1966, the Biafran Civil War, and successive coups which ousted General Yakubu Gowon and Murtala Muhammed respectively. The Obasanjo regime, and the rise and fall of the second republic were well covered in the book.

I consider myself privileged because amidst the grand distortions of our political history, insights I gathered from the book made me come to the conclusion that agitation against perceived marginalization is one of the greatest conspiracies in Nigeria’s history. The South-East and South-West have been major proponents of the marginalization debate. But for the sake of the message I intend to convey this week, I will major on the erroneous arguments of some of my South-East brothers and sisters.

First, Chief Odumegu Ojukwu sowed the seed of discord right from the word go. Frederick Forsyth’s account clearly suggests that though Ojukwu was amongst the most brilliant army officers of his time, his egocentric and self-serving nature practically led the entire Igbo nation to war. If Ojukwu had emerged Head of State after the death of Aguiyi Ironsi, I bet you, he wouldn’t have marched his people to battle. Even the same Ojukwu was never comfortable and loyal to his fellow Igbo man, Aguyi Ironsi, as Head of State. He capitalized on the death of the former Head of State to further his political agenda, an ambition he had nursed right from his days at Oxford University.

Second, unlike northern officers who shared a strong comradeship, Ojukwu and Maj. Kaduna Nzeogwu were arch-enemies even till the death of the later. They both worked at cross-purposes principally because of their personal agenda, and not necessarily for love of their people. In fact, the manner in which Ojukwu escaped out of Nigeria leaving his people to languish in pain and die clearly indicated that Ojukwu couldn’t have been a national leader. As far as he was concerned it was him first. He escaped with swath of cash to set up his hauling business in Ivory Coast, which is still about the biggest hauling company in Africa.

Third, it may interest my readers to know that 3 million people were estimated to have died during the Biafran Civil war; but no member of Ojukwu household suffered any casualty. Infact his father’s Transport Company and other family businesses were protected and shielded from the calamity of the war. This is despite the gross destruction of lives and property belonging to Igbo men and women.

Fourth, the manhandling by Ojukwu of Lt.Col. Victor Banjo a brilliant Yoruba officer who fought on the side of the Biafrans is still a sour taste of history. For “daring” to write a memorandum to Ojukwu to review the war efforts, Lt.Col. Victor Banjo, Maj. Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Samuel Agbam and Maj. Alale were labelled traitors, accused of wanting to overthrow the Biafran Administration, court marshalled and executed. This singular action was the beginning of the end of Ojukwu and his Biafran fighting army.

Fifth, I strongly believe that if Ojukwu was man enough to stand and die for the cause of Biafra, by now Biafra would have been actualized. But he cowed and ran away without the courtesy of confiding in his deputy, Philip Effiong. Great leaders put their lives on the line for their people, but in my estimation Ojukwu is not one of such leaders.

Sixth, I must admit that the Igbos were equally magnanimous in defeat so much so that after the Civil war there was no single guerrilla group fighting the Federal Government in the South-East. This also is unprecedented in history. We are yet to see any armed people group who lost in a war and embraced peace without putting up a fight. It was a clear indication that the people themselves are willing partners that were misled.

Seventh, the magnanimity of Nigeria towards the Igbos climaxed with the election of Alex Ekwueme as Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, nine years after the Civil War. This is a record-breaking event. For instance, though the South in America produced the first seven Presidents before the American Civil War in 1861, it took the South one hundred and fourteen (114) years to produce a President in the person of Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1963. This still remains a reference point of how open hearted Nigerians were towards the Igbos.

Eight, after 13 years in exile, the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari granted an official pardon to Odumegwu-Ojukwu and opened the road for a triumphant return in 1982. For leading an entire nation to war is a treasonable offence punishable by death anywhere in the world, yet Ojukwu was welcomed with open arms and he eventually contested the Presidency of a nation he once attempted to destroy.

Nineth, three weeks after the Civil war in 1970, Igbos were scattered all over Nigeria again, carrying out their trade and businesses without molestation. In fact in some parts of Nigeria, Igbos who fled the north returned after the war to meet their property and belongings intact. This again is another proof of how much Igbos are loved.

Tenth, my father once told me that “Son! Whenever you enter any village in Nigeria, however interior it is, if you don’t find an Igbo man or woman, please do not spend the night there”. How instructive this is. Igbos are welcomed anytime any day in every part of the country. Infact the tallest storey building in my village is owned by an Igbo man. They have unrestrained access to land and carry on with their trade without molestation. The Igbos are reported to own more lands and landed property in Abuja than any other tribe. This is also the case in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano.

Unfortunately, we cannot say how other tribes are fairing in Igbo land. In fact, I am yet to meet anyone who successfully acquired a piece of land in the South-East. It is like getting the Carmel to pass through the eyes of the needle. Up till today, unlike Kano and Lagos where Igbo merchants are dominant, you can easily count how many none tribe has shops in Onitsha, Aba and Nnewi.
What then is the cry about?

To be continued!

PoliticsFear Grips Ohaneze Ndigbo Over Ultimatum To Leave North by akpanoka(op): 12:36pm On Jun 07, 2017
There is widespread anxiety in the South Eastern part of the country. This is sequel to an ultimatum issued a Coalition of Northern Youth Groups directing Igbos residing in the northern part of the country to leave the region within three months or face violent attacks.

Worried by the declaration, members of the Igbo Socio-Cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo have called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to urgently wade into the matter and stop possible violent expulsion of the Igbos from the North. In a statement issued by the Deputy Publicity Secretary of the group, Chucks Ibegbu, the group described the call as treasonable and intended to incite one section of the country against another.

The statement reads in part “The DSS, the police and other security agencies should take note of the statement by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum and the other Northern groups for issuing this threat against the Igbo. It should not be seen as an empty threat; urgent action is needed to foil the plan to attack the Igbo in the North. It happened in the past and we don’t want it to happen again."

The statement further added that the character that issued the ultimatum "should be arrested by the DSS immediately. We are watching to see what the DSS would do in this situation. Yerima Shettima’s statement is treasonable; he is inciting one section of the country against another section and we know from experience that this sort of thing could lead to a civil war. His utterances could destroy this country.”

Vigil360 had earlier reported that a coalition of frontline Northern youth organisations, issued an ultimatum (See: SECESSION: North Hands Igbos Ultimatum To Leave Region) which will elapse on 1st Oct, 2017 to all Igbos’ to leave the region as they will begin ‘visible actions’ to prove they are no longer part of the federation.

If Biafra feels they are in Nigeria without their approval, they shouldn't annex people in their quest for independence. They should first of all rally people. Make them agree to be part of them before they draw their map and follow through.

Jobs/VacanciesWe Are Not Recruiting - SSS (pix) by akpanoka(op): 6:59pm On Jun 02, 2017
The State security Service, SSS, has called on members of the public to be wary of fraudsters promising them job placement in the organization, as their sole purpose is to defraud them of their hard earned money.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the spokesman of the secret police, Mr. Tony Opuiyo, warned those misinforming the public of an imaginary employment process to desist from the act as it will take every necessary measure to bring them to book.

The statement reads “The attention of the State Security Service (SSS) has once again been drawn to the illegal activities of some fraudulent persons and groups who extort money from unsuspecting members of the public with a promise to employ them into the Service.

"The Service wishes to state for the umpteenth time that it is not currently employing or carrying out any form of exercise in that regard. The public may note that in the event that the Service recruits, it does not charge money for that purpose."

“The public is therefore, advised to be wary of these fraudulent persons and groups whose stock in trade has remained the spread of falsehood and engagement in impersonation. The Service further warns that it will, in accordance with the law, not hesitate to deal decisively with anyone caught in the act of impersonating it."

“While efforts have been sustained at uncovering the network of these fraudsters, the public is enjoined to pass relevant information relating to this to the nearest Service Command.”

Foreign AffairsGlobal Backlash Over Trump’s Withdrawal Of The US From Paris Climate Deal (pix) by akpanoka(op): 5:09pm On Jun 02, 2017
Majority of world leaders have criticised US President, Donald Trump for his withdrawal of the country from the Paris Climate Agreement which seeks a global action plan to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming.
The move has been described variously as harmful, a mistake, a disppointment and even shameful.

Majority of world leaders have criticised US President, Donald Trump for his withdrawal of the country from the Paris Climate Agreement which seeks a global action plan to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming.

The UN in a reaction shortly after Trump announced the withdrawal, said it was a major disappointment for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote global security.

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, told the media at the UN Headquarters in New York, Thursday, that “the Paris Agreement was adopted by all the world's nations in 2015 because they recognise the immense harm that climate change is already causing and the enormous opportunity that climate action presents.”

The UN, which governs the Paris accord, also said the agreement was a “historic treaty” that “cannot be renegotiated based on the request of a single party.”

In a separate statement, the head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Executive Director Erik Solheim said the US decision to leave the Paris Agreement in no way brings an end to this unstoppable effort and that unparalleled effort to combat the “global challenge” cannot be derailed by a single political decision.

Also in a joint statement, leaders of France, Germany and Italy said “we deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies."

Reacting in an unprecedented English-language speech, French President, Emmanuel Macron called the withdrawal “mistake both for the US and for our planet.”

In an obvious reposte to Trump’s “Make America Great Again,” Macron added: "wherever we live, whoever we are, we all share the same responsibility: make our planet great again."

He also urged climate change scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to go to France to continue their work, assuring that “they will find in France a second homeland.”

In Germany, a statement issued by seven Social Democratic ministers in Chancellor Angela Merkel's left-right coalition government said the US "is harming itself, we Europeans and all the people of the world."

The German ministers claim "the land of the free and the home of the brave is contradicting its basic principles".

Former US President Barrack Obama also criticised Trump for pulling out of the Paris climate deal, warning that the move would see the US “reject the future.”

Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who is the incoming head of the U.N. Climate Change Conferences, which formalized the 2015 pact, said Trump's decision was "deeply disappointing".

Fiji, like many other small island nations, is seen as particularly vulnerable to global warming and a possible rise in ocean levels as a result of melting polar ice.

Key industry players, particularly in the US have also condemned the pull-out. Goldman Sachs Group Inc Chief Executive, Lloyd Blankfein wrote on Twitter: “Today's decision is a setback for the environment and for the U.S.'s leadership position in the world,” while Tesla Inc CEO, Elon Musk and Walt Disney CEO, Robert Iger have said they would leave White House advisory councils.

The Tesla CEO tweeted: "Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world."

Also, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt said he was disappointed, adding: "Climate change is real. Industry must now lead and not depend on government."

Meanwhile, three US Governors have rebelled against the withdrawal. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, California Governor Edmund Brown Jr., and Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, said they’re forming a coalition of states committed to fighting climate change.

Inslee in a statement said “While the President’s actions are a shameful rebuke to the work needed to protect our planet for our children and grandchildren, states have been and will continue to step up.”

Although Trump has indicated the US would try to re-negotiate a “better deal”, it is unlikely that the remaining 194 countries which adopted the first-ever global climate deal in 2015, will easily concede to another round of negotiations on the basis of one country’s withdrawal.
