PoliticsGov. Ayade’s Defection: Why APC Must Not Celebrate Yet by akpanoka(op): 2:10pm On May 20, 2021
This afternoon, the Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade defected to the ruling APC. The move which took place in the Calabar, the state capital, was witnessed by some prominent members of the APC including Buni, Fayemi, Uzodinma and Silva, the Minister of State Petroleum. Meanwhile, his defection did not come as a surprise as he has been severally accused of hobnobbing with the APC. Recently, he threatened to leave the party, alleging that he was being unjustly treated by the PDP. Today, the APC celebrates his defection. But does the man have any electoral or financial value? Certainly not.

Gov. Ayade’s travail became pronounce when he failed to deliver during the ward and Local Government Congresses. Stakeholders in the party allegedly saw him as a monumental failure and decided to rescue the party. It was gathered that he could not even produce ward and LGA EXCOs in Obudu LGA, where he hails from. His attempt to arm-twist the party leadership to nullify the congress failed. The matter became worse when the Supreme Court validated the outcome of the congress, leaving him politically stranded. The Umbrella was taken away from him.

The leadership of the party delayed the state congress with a view to finding a soft landing for him, but that didn’t work. I must observe that the young man is the architect of his political misfortune. He reportedly handed over the administration of the state to his brother FRANK. It is on record that his brother singlehandedly installed all the eighteen LG Chairmen without usual consultation or primaries. Even in LGA where prominent party leaders exist, they were not consulted. In most cases, decisions of party caucuses were jettisoned. Why won’t they gang up against him?

The last episode was the northern senatorial district bye-election. Note that Ayade had represented the District before becoming a governor. His candidate was overwhelmingly rejected. The appeal court affirmed one J Agom, a House of Reps Member as winner of the Primaries, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court. Why he has not been sworn in by the Senate would become clearer in the coming days. But why would a Governor not be able to produce a senator in his own district?
The answer is simple. HIS SCORE CARD. When a sitting Governor fails to woo the electorates to vote for his candidate, then he has apparently been rejected by his own people. It is clear that a relatively unknown young man pursued him out of PDP. If he can’t deliver a Senatorial District, what value would he then add to his new group? Financially the state is broke. All the English-coated budgets since inception of his administration have not been fulfilled. All signature projects abandoned. Existing roads that were assisting motorists have been destroyed and the hope of new ones almost dashed. The truth is Cross Rivers is suffering. LGA Chairmen are lamenting. Councilors are crying. Calabar that use to be one of the most beautiful cities is now a shadow of itself.

APC has work to do, if Cross River must truly become its state. The party must assist him to deliver. Well, since it is a party of the progressives, maybe he would learn how progressive policies are formulated and implemented. But for now, a Governor that can deliver five LGAs cannot bring anything to the table.

PoliticsThe Jungle Journalism Of Sahara Reporters by akpanoka(op): 2:35am On Oct 08, 2020
THE JUNGLE JOURNALISM OF SAHARA REPORTERS

By Dickson Adebowale

The history of journalism spans the growth of technology and trade, marked by the advent of specialized techniques for gathering and disseminating information on a regular basis. This is an agelong profession known for respectable and noble individuals who adhere religiously to the principles of journalism. These principles by which true journalists work include: truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability.

In a recalcitrant deviance to the principles mentioned above, Sahara Reporters, the online news platform created by Omoyele Sowore in 2006 with base in New York, has become notorious for unverified and unfiltered reports. This dissenting attitude of Sahara Reporters is obviously borne out of quest for cheap popularity by Sowore as the trademark of his online platform is unguarded attack against very important personalities especially those in the corridors of power. His morbid thirst for power which could not be quenched in 2019 general elections is surely the driving force for his jungle journalism. Journalism has never been practised in this manner for time immemorial.

As a freelance journalist with many years of experience, I have taken time out on many occasions to verify some of the reports published by Sahara Reporters, most of which turned out to be scandalous and lack elements of verity. From further analysis of some of the reports, it became obvious that the online news platform gets information from whatever unverified sources available, publishes it as received or deliberately embelishes it to appeal to the readership of some lurking antagonists.

To buttress the above discovery, a report published on 5th October, 2020 by Sahara Reporters about a purported NNPC official arrested by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK for fraud was not only lacking in facts but also depicts incompleteness in its entirety. In the whole of the report, the date and place where Inuwa Ibrahim Waya was arrested were never indicated. Still, the report was published with vital questions of "when" and "where" left unanswered. Also, the headline of the report was in sharp contrast to the opening paragraph (expressing some sort of Waya's political ambition). This shows the angle from which the report was approached - highly sentimental.

Related to the above was the recent unbridled attack against the person of the Director-General State Services, Mr Yusuf Bichi over the recruitment done by the organization. A verification of the figures thrown up by Sahara Reporters as regards the number of candidates being trained were authoritatively found to be fictitious. It still amazes one why Sowore has not been subjected to serious litigation by the individuals he publishes untruths about. This is the only way the wild publications of jungle journalism by Sahara Reporters can be tamed.

PoliticsIBB Condemns Revolution, Says Nigeria Difficult To Govern by akpanoka(op):
Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on Tuesday tacitly condemned ongoing Revolution Now Protest and appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration as Nigeria is difficult to administer. He described Nigeria as a complex and difficult country because of its diversities and peculiarities.

Babangida who spoke when the House of Representatives Minority Caucus led by Minority Leader Ndudi Elumelu visited him at his uphill residence in Minna, Niger State, said the diversities always give room for contrasting opinions and debates along geopolitical lines which sometimes lead to tension and bad blood.

According to Dailytrust, Babangida urged political leaders not to be intimidated by the complexities of the country, but focus on harmonizing the peculiarities into an advantage. He said the country’s founding father’s fought relentlessly to build a strong and virile entity despite the inherent challenges.

He appealed to the National Assembly members not to allow the struggle of the founding fathers to be vain by building on the bond of unity which upon the country was found.

“I am passionate in observing what is going on in the country, I develop lots of interest in the on-goings across the country and I think the leadership of the House of Representatives, the Speaker, the opposition leadership and everyone, I think you are all doing well. “You represent the people and it is what the people wish that you take up. I want to commend you for doing your job honourably and urge you not to give up,” he said.

PoliticsRevolution Now: NANS Slams Sowore, Others; Commends DSS For Prompt Action by akpanoka(op): 9:45am On Aug 06, 2019
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS on Monday berated Omoyele Sowore and his fellow organizers of the Revolution Now march over ongoing protest, describing their action as akin to a coup against a democratic government.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Zonal Coordinator, NANS Zone A, Umar Farouk Lawal, commended the Department of State Services for its prompt response, stressing that the planned protest would have degenerated if prompt action was not taken.

“For us, there will be no compromise when it comes to putting the nation first over and above any other consideration, it is Nigeria first and Nigeria always.

“It is without doubt that our nation is going through series of challenges ranges from insurgency, banditry to armed robbery and kidnapping resulting from many years of mis-governance, but calling for revolution is akin to coup d’etat against a legitimate government of Nigeria. It is call for chaos and civil unrest to topple the duly democratically elected Muhammadu Buhari led administration.

“Change of government should be via the constitutionally guaranteed means such as through the ballots or impeachment proceedings of the national assembly. As a matter of urgency, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration must come up with other social intervention programmes to complement the existing ones that will empower millions of citizens and lift them out of poverty.”

PoliticsSharing Formula Tears Revolutionaries Apart, As State Coordinators Pulls Out-pix by akpanoka(op): 10:31am On Aug 05, 2019
All appears not to be well within the ranks of the self-styled Nigerian revolutionaries following emerging allegations of commercialization of the struggle and the refusal by major organizers of the protest to evenly distribute funds so far received.

Yele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last presidential election and owner of the popular online newspaper, Saharareporters had announced the commencement of revolutionary protest across the country. He did thisby launching hashtags on Social Media such as as#RevolutionNow, #ThisIsNotMyCountry and the #DayOfRage. He maintained that the action was aimed at drawing the attention of Government to the ills of the society including insecurity, unemployment, bad roads, and lack of electricity among others.

Although the hashtags have continued to trend across the various social media platforms, indications have emerged that some actors, mainly student union leaders in some Universities have queried Sowore's refusal to disburse collected funds to the various coordinators. One of the aggrieved coordinators disclosed that Sowore collected monies running into about $35m from some Nigerian politicians and Middle East diplomats in the United States and Dubai.

He claimed that the money collected from Dubai is believed to have been offered by the diplomat who is seeking the destabilization of the country in reaction to the continued incarceration of the leader of Shiites, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Currently, some of the coordinators are threatening to pull out of the planned revolution on Monday. One Kunle Omoshola, who claimed to be the coordinator in Ogun State said the initial plan was for the money to be distributed to the various state coordinators one week before the protest. He wondered why Sowore was still reluctant to release funds to aid the mobilization process.

"I may not participate in the so-called revolution protest anymore. Some of the organizers have commercialized the exercise. They collected money and are still holding tight to it. That is not how things work. That was how "Our Mumu Don Do" group collapsed. Charly Boy betrayed Adeyanju by collecting money from the same government they were meant to be fighting. If Sowore fails to release the money, he should go to the street alone. Let Moses Andrew and the other selfish and hungry sell-outs follow him."

The issue of money and the sharing formula has been agitating the minds of many close associates of Sowore who are urging him to release the funds meant for the twelvestates shortlisted for the flag-off of the protest. Investigations by vigil 360 indicate that during a recent meeting in Dubai between Sowore and some top opposition politicians from Nigeria as well as Shiite leaders from Iran,30million dollars was earmarked to mobilize Nigerians in twelve states to come out and protest on 5th August 2019. The states billed for the flag-off protest are; Lagos, Ogun, Enugu, Abia, Rivers, Edo, Anambra, Kano, Kaduna, Benue, Adamawa and the FCT .

Those who attended the Dubai meeting expected that at least a billion naira will be shared among activists in each of the states billed to commence the initial protest. But to their chagrin, as the days for the revolutionary protest draws nearer, Sowore seems to be playing with their intelligence by not releasing sufficient funds for mobilization in states.

Meanwhile, it is unknown whether some of the aggrieved coordinators tipped off the DSS off before Sowore's arrest.

A Police source privy to the arrest told Vigil360 that so many cases have been established against Sowore and he might be charged to court next week. He said to attempt to unseat a democratically elected government was treasonable and should be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. He charged those aggrieved with the government to join political parties and vote out non-performing government officials.

Politics'revolution Now’ Protest A Calculated Time Bomb Hatched By Politicians - Ohaneze by akpanoka(op): 9:59am On Aug 05, 2019
The Youth Wing of apex Igbo Socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo has condemned the planned nationwide protest tagged 'Revolution Now", stressing that the action is a calculated time bomb hatched by some influential personalities to cause civil disobedience.

In a statement issued by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro the group urged security agencies not to resort to confrontation against the protesters as there could be a possibility of a political trap and conspiracy set out to catch President Buhari.

“There are [plots] to derail his government or bring the Presidency into negotiation with the opposition by possibly getting his presidential approval to proceed and convoke a national dialogue for all ethnic nationalities in the country or implement the 2014 report of the National Confab.

“AAC presidential candidate Sowore’s arrest is capable of doing more damage. The proposed ‘Revolution Now’ protests is a calculated time bomb hatched by some influential personalities to bring civil disobedience and disturbances in the country.

“We urge the Federal Government to avoid the use of confrontation against the Revolution Now protesters and avert the revolution through the unconditional release of Sowore.

“Sowore will be made a hero if he continued to be in detention, as such violent protests is what is aimed to attract the sympathy of the international community and discredit President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure and the safety of Igbos scattered all over the country will not be guaranteed.

PoliticsRe: Military: We are Not Planning To Overthrow Buhari by akpanoka: 8:26am On May 15, 2019
Ebullience:
The defence headquarters on Tuesday dissociated the armed forces of Nigeria from the circulation of document, calling for the overthrow of the democratically elected government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued by Muhammed Wabi, deputy director of defence information, the DHQ accused a group, “Nigerian Continuity and Progress’’ as being behind the document.

Wabi alleged that the document called for the setting up of an “interim government’’ in place of the elected government.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to dissociate itself from the rascality and intentions as espoused in a document being circulated by a faceless group named Nigerian Continuity and Progress calling for support of a revolution to oust the current democratically elected government and in its place establish an illegitimate interim government,” the statement read.

“The AFN outrightly condemns the undemocratic and demonic actions of the author of the document.

“Accordingly, members of the public are enjoined to discountenance the content of the documents being circulated by NCP and equally condemned in totality, the call to derail our hard-earned democracy.”

It said the armed forces was “very mindful of its constitutional responsibilities’’ and would not be misled into any act that would undermine democracy as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“The AFN remains unflinchingly loyal to the Constitution, as well as President Muhammadu Buhari and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he said.

Wabi said all relevant law enforcement agencies had been advised to unravel those behind the “seditious” document for appropriate actions.
