cjrane:This is the story without the exaggerations.. dailypost.ng/2016/08/13/three-dead-scores-injured-igbos-hausas-clash-imo-photos/ Three dead, scores injured as Igbos, Hausas clash in Imo [PHOTOS] By Daily Post Staff on August 13, 2016 @dailypostngr In another inter-ethnic flare-up, the Imo State Police command, in eastern Nigeria, has confirmed the death of three persons amongst them two women and a man at Akokwa community in Ideato Local Government Area on Friday. DSP Andrew Enwerem, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) who confirmed the incident in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Owerri, said some others sustained injuries. He explained that an unidentified man, said to be from the northern part of Nigeria, had run amok and killed a girl and a woman and thereafter killed himself. He said some aggrieved youths immediately went for reprisal attacks. This he said led to some other persons sustaining various degrees of injuries. According to Enwerem, the report came to the Imo police headquarters not long after the incident occurred and the commissioner of police deployed anti-riot policemen who stopped the incident from spreading further. “Report to police showed that a yet to be identified northerner ran amok at Akokwa community and used weapons to attack and kill a girl and a woman and thereafter killed himself’’, he said. Enwerem said the problem has been brought under control, adding that normalcy has returned to the area. A witness had told NAN that the girl killed was hawking snacks when the northerner suddenly chased her till she ran to an elderly woman for protection. The witness added that the man attacked both the girl and the woman with shovel resulting to their immediate death. He said that the killing sparked off reprisal attack by the youths and the killing of the attacker, while some others sustained various degrees of injuries. NAN learnt that Police and other security agencies deployed to the community are still there as at press time to prevent the clash from spreading (NAN) |

cjrane:Clean and unclean—that can be a matter of great importance to us, but it is also a matter of differing definitions. In third world countries, “clean” means “free of large clumps of contamination.” In our children’s bedrooms, clean has a definition which means that everything has been kicked into one general pile and if given enough time, they can find what they left in that pile. Clean means something different when we come to the definition of clean versus unclean in Leviticus. It is important for us to understand the meaning of clean and unclean , as it is used in the Old Testament, and its application for us in the New Testament. |

bombay:I read this thread from the beginning and I really felt your pain.I am going to answer you with points and maybe some links. First...I think you are either an Igbo or Niger deltan especially Ijaw.I and others know that you felt very bad for losing the last elections..who would not? What you failed to realise is that not all Yorubas voted for PMB... The ratio was like 55 to 45..PMB to GEJ...or thereabout. I voted for PMB just like all Yorubas would have loved to vote for him but what you started your thread with and some articles that are written by Yorubas that you have posted prevented this..so that you will understand that they know these things more than most of you but.. THE FIRST THING YOU TOO KNOW IS THAT JONATHAN CAUSED HIS DOWNFALL BY SIDELINING THE YORUBAS.. 1.YORUBAS ARE USING THEIR GOD GIVEN WISDOM TO REMAIN AT THE UTMOST TOP meaning...it is a survival of the fittest in Nigeria. WE ARE IN A JUNGLE(Yes, Nigeria is a jungle not zoo.Zoo has decorum but a jungle does not..almost anything goes)WITH ABOUT 240 ETHNIC GROUPS..THE MAJOR ONES BEING...YORUBA,IGBO AND HAUSA...THEN THE FULANI CAME IN. 2.THE FULANI WERE LUCKY INGRATES WHO CAME IN AND CONQUERED ALL OF HAUSALAND AND ARE USING THEIR(HAUSAS) POPULATION TO MAINTAIN THEIR OLIGARCHY OVER THE OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS. 3.HAUSAS HAVE BEEN TURNED TO SLAVES,ETERNAL SLAVES IN THEIR OWN ANCESTRAL LAND BY THE FULANIS. 4.FULANI TRIED TO COME INTO THE WEST BUT WERE AFRAID BECAUSE YORUBAS WERE WARRIORS WHO WERE CONTROLLING THEIR EMPIRE UP TO DAHOMEY,TOGO AND GHANA UNTIL AFONJA GAVE THEM THE LEEWAY BECAUSE OF HIS MISUNDERSTANDING WITH THE ALAAFIN OF OYO.TOGETHER WITH AFONJA THEY SACKED OYO AND WERE LATER DEFEATED DECISIVELY BY A SUB GROUP OF YORUBA...IBADAN...BECAUSE OF THEIR TREACHERY,THEY KILLED AFONJA AND TOOK OVER THE KINGSHIP OF ILORIN.IF THEY HAD BEEN ABLE TO PENETRATE YORUBALAND,THEN ALL SOUTHERNERS WOULD HAVE BEEN RULED BY EMIRS BY NOW BUT YORUBAS PUT PAID TO THAT AMBITION. 5.THE WHITE MEN CAUSED THE WHOLE WAHALA BY MAKING SURE THAT POWER WAS GIVEN TO THE NORTH WHO THEY KNEW DID NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO STEER NIGERIA TO GREAT HEIGHTS. YORUBAS ARE NOT REALLY AGITATING BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LOT GOING FOR THEM AND THEY KNOW IT IS A CASE OF SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.. 1.THEY ARE CONSIDERATE WARRIORS WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY AND HAD WON THEIR WARS. 2. THEY HAVE THE MOST BUSINESSES BOTH HOME AND ABROAD...(I DID NOT SAY TRADE BUT BUSINESS) 3.THEY CONTROL THE ECONOMY OF NIGERIA. 4.SW IS THE 3RD ECONOMY IN AFRICA. 5.THEY HAVE THE MOST INFRASTRUCTURES IN NIGERIA. 6.THEY ARE THE MOST EDUCATED...(Higher institution wise)They have taken almost all the HIGHER educational laurels home and abroad. 7.THEY HAVE LAGOS WHICH IS THE 6TH ECONOMY IN AFRICA AND THE LARGEST CITY IN WEST AFRICA. 8.THEY HAVE OGUN STATE WHICH IS THE MOST INDUSTRIALIZED STATE IN NIGERIA ETC. I am giving you these because of some peeps who said SW had never agitated against the federal govt.SW had always agitated for the good of all Nigerians.Do you still remember?; The Democratic Alternative (DA) The National Democratic Coalition of Nigeria (NADECO) The United Democratic Front of Nigeria (UDFN) ETC. AS FOR THE SOUTH NOT BEEN UNITED AGAINST THE NORTH,IT WAS AND ALWAYS BEEN CAUSED BY OUR SOUTHERN BROTHERS WHO HAD ALWAYS GONE AGAINST YORUBA.AZIKIWE DID IT WHEN AWOLOWO SEEKED FOR UNITY BUT AZIKIWE PREFERRED TO JOIN THE NORTH. THE ONLY TRIBE THAT HAD NEVER OR WOULD NOT DISCRIMINATE WHEN IN POWER HAD BEEN YORUBA BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY LIBERAL... READ ABOUT THE MAGNANIMITY OF OBASANJO... http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/time-to-end-the-bad-blood-between-the-yorubas-and-ndigbo/ Indeed, Obasanjo favoured the Igbo more than his native Yorubas. He appointed an Igbo, Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, as the Minister of Defense and another, Air Marshal Paul Dike, as Nigeria’s first Igbo Chief of Air Staff. While the Igbo visit the transgressions of Awolowo on the Yorubas, they do not visit the favouritism of Obasanjo on the Yorubas. The sins of Awolowo were brought again to the fore in 2012 by Chinua Achebe in his book: “There Was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra.” The blogs came alive as blame was traded on both sides of the East-West divide. Awolowo was now cast by the Igbos as the father of the Yorubas; and they were determined to visit his sins on his Yoruba sons to the third and fourth generations. Aisha, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday said her ongoing trip to the United States was not being funded with public funds. Speaking in an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America, Mrs. Buhari said the trip was being funded with personal funds and sponsorship grant. “We sponsored even the government officials that came with us on this trip,” she said. The president’s wife explained that the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was not funding her office and that her role was just a supportive one to complement her husband’s services to the country. Mrs. Buhari said the office of First Lady had become a tradition in almost all nations of the world, not just Nigeria. “All that we are doing is to help our husbands,” she said. “For instance someone can decide to give me Indomie or Maggie, which he cannot give to the president, women need these things. “In any state where a governor’s wife is irrelevant such as Yobe, you will notice that the women are suffering. “Whenever we get such gifts, we don’t keep them but share to those in need.” The president’s wife also explained that the Nigerian government had put in place a special programme to help women. She said she held a meeting with the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, before embarking on her U.S. trip on how to sensitize women on ways of taking advantage of the new policy. “Very soon our women will get help,” she said. Mrs. Buhari also responded to a question on why Nigerians are suffering at this time. “This may be because of the existence of the Treasury Single Account, TSA, and the activities of Boko Haram which prevented people from farming last season,” she said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/208165-trip-u-s-funded-aisha-buhari.html

Johnnyessence:He really has a very big dream for Osun and most Osunians know this but unfortunately Osun does not have the financial strength coupled with the last elections which really affected a lot of APC states.None of them would tell you that they contributed financially to the emergence of Buhari. I am sure that Aregbe would pull through safely and he would be remembered positively for a long time in Osun, politics aside. If you really believe that you're making a difference and that you can leave a legacy of better schools and jobs and safer streets, why would you not spend the money? The happy part is that he has a lot of projects to show for Osun state indebtedness just like USA which is one of the most indebted countries in the world but has a lot to show for its indebtedness. But he should soft pedal as things are now.More grease.... |
arresa:I went through the thread and thank God for those open eyes pix... In my own view,Aregbesola did more projects than any governor in his class in recent time(I may be wrong) but he seemed to have chewed more than he could swallow.I went to Oshogbo last year in december with an elderly man and he was all over me with the praises of Aregbe when he showed me some ongoing projects. With what I saw...I think the case of Aregbe would be Who Laughs Last Laughs Best.. I FEEL HIM AND UNDERSTAND WHY A LOT OF OSUNIANS STILL LOVE HIM IN SPITE OF THE FINANCIAL MESS.. Hmmmm....It is really No Pain No Gain. |

Ofemannnu:I SAW THIS AS A THREAD AND I THINK IT IS AN ATTESTATION TO THE FACT THAT LAGOS IS THE 6TH LARGEST ECONOMY IN AFRICA: Lagos Global, Taxation And Lagos Economy Tayo Ogunbiyi Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State Lagos, no doubt, has enormous potential for economic growth. Despite not being an oil producing state, it remains one of the few states in the country that is self sustaining. Its growing economy derives its strength from commercial and financial activities. Lagos accounts for 20.2 percent of Nigeria’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 50.7 percent of non oil GDP as well as being home to about 2,000 industrial complexes, 10,000 commercial ventures and 22 industrial estates. Aside this, Lagos alone consumes about 45 percent of petroleum products in the country. It is in order to effectively leverage on the potentials of the Lagos economy for optimal efficacy that the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, made the establishment of the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment, generally known as Lagos Global, one of his earliest tasks. The office, which was set up to help achieve the vision of Lagos State as Africa’s Model Megacity and Global Economic and Financial Hub that is safe, secure, functional and productive, is designed to be a one-stop shop for foreign investors. Drivers of the Lagos Global initiative, are to, among others, initiate, formulate and evaluate policies relating to the promotion of inward and outward investments, liaise with embassies, chambers of commerce, ministries and agencies on foreign relations, promote state export potentials, facilitate foreign direct investment and inter-ECOWAS/African Union commerce and trade as well as facilitate export promotion, fairs and exhibitions to showcase the economic potentials of Lagos. Since inception, Lagos Global has been providing a boost for investment drive as well as the general growth of the state’s economy. Recently, German manufacturing firm, the Knauf Group International, expressed its readiness to commence work on a N14 billion manufacturing firm in the state. This came to fore when the German Ambassador, Michael Zenner, led a group of German diplomats and investors on a courtesy visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Other local and international investors have since been signifying their interests in doing business in Lagos. In recent time, the state government has played host to investors from Dubai, United States of America, Namibia, Middle East, Europe as well as our own Dangote Group of Companies. With the state already having various investments commitment in the region of about N500 billion from both local and foreign interests, it is safe to affirm that Lagos would surmount the present global economic downturn. It is, however, important to stress that it is in entrenching the right culture of taxation that the Lagos’ economy could essentially thrive better. All over the world, governments rely on taxes paid by the citizens to finance their activities. Revenue accrued from tax is used to provide jobs, upgrade public infrastructure and provide medical care among others. Taxation helps in maintaining the stability of any country’s economy. The significance of taxation to the development of any economy cannot be over stressed as it is a major tool for socio-economic advancement. In Lagos State, it is rather regrettable that only about 3 million Lagos residents out of a taxable adult population of about 8 million that pays their taxes. The reality of this development is that only 3 million people bear the burden of over 20 million Lagosians. It is crucial to stress that, with dwindling oil revenue, the only way forward for a growing mega city like Lagos, where peoples’ expectations of government are always high, is to establish an efficient system of taxation. This is why the recent announcement that the state government had widened its tax net to include more groups and individuals is a welcome one. Accordingly, the state government has started the process of overhauling the informal sector with a view to ensuring voluntary compliance by all tax payers. Towards this end, three categories of tax payers, namely market men/women, artisans, micro, small and medium-scale enterprises and domestic staff had been classified in the sector. They are expected to remit one per cent of their earnings to government’s coffers. To ensure optimal success of the new tax system, in addition to the traditional bank portal, new payment platforms, including POS, online and other electronics multi-modal system had been introduced to make it easier for residents to remit their taxes. Similarly, a review of the tax Form A of the Personal Income Tax Act had also been carried out while the guide notes are to be translated into more indigenous languages and pidgin for effective understanding. In order to guard against corruption among State’s Tax Officers, stringent disciplinary measures have been put in place. Being a melting pot of people from diverse parts of the world as well as the commercial and economic hub of West Africa, Lagos has peculiar infrastructure needs. There is, perhaps, no other state in the country that contends with as much pressure on its infrastructure as Lagos. The financial force required to promote Lagos infrastructure to the standard of developed mega cities of the world is, undoubtedly, enormous. This is why taxable Lagos residents must partner with the state government through prompt and voluntary payment of taxes in order to attain the Lagos of our collective dream. This is the path that is toed by all advanced democracies of the world. This is the only way for Lagos to achieve a stable and prosperous economy. This is the right thing to do. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/03/16/ lagos-global-taxation-and-lagos-economy/ |

The Newest Weapon In The Quest For Athletic Performance Gianni Merlo AIPS President Let’s face it – doping has sadly become the main issue facing sport. Almost every day we are bombarded by news of doping scandals at all levels. Athletes, federations, and clubs are under constant scrutiny and it’s becoming more and more difficult for the media to enjoy doing their work. Fighting the dopers is not cheap. WADA president Sir Craig Reedy yesterday appealed for donations and suggested that broadcasters and sponsors put their hands in their pockets to “help fund clean sport”. The world was shocked by Maria Sharapova’s recent admission that she used the banned medication Meldonium. No doubt sales of this drug will increase as the so-called amateurs become more and more fascinated by its properties – just as when Ben Johnson was caught for the use of Stanazolol in 1988 there was an incredible spike in sales of the synthetic anabolic steroid. In an ironic twist the pharmaceutical companies are the ones who benefit when a top champion is caught doping. It’s the “best” kind of advertising. Scientists are not only pushing the boundaries to find cures for disease; they are also focussing on increasing stamina. Most recently in Nature Magazine I read with both fascination and skepticism about how ‘Brain doping’ may improve athletes’ performance: “Working with Halo Neuroscience in San Francisco, California, the sports group (US Ski and Snowboard Association, USSA) is testing whether stimulating the brain with electricity can improve the performance of ski jumpers by making it easier for them to hone their skills. Other research suggests that targeted brain stimulation can reduce an athlete’s ability to perceive fatigue. Such technologies could aid recovery from injury or let athletes try ‘brain doping’ to gain a competitive advantage. “The USSA is working with Halo to judge the efficacy of a device that delivers electricity to the motor cortex, an area of the brain that controls physical skills. The company claims that the stimulation helps the brain to build new connections as it learns a skill. It tested its device in an unpublished study of seven elite Nordic ski jumpers, including Olympic athletes.” Should we be scared or it this normal? I would like to know your opinion because we cannot be complacent; we must find the right way for the future of sport. http://independentnig.com/2016/03/brain-doping-newest-weapon-quest-athletic-performance-gianni-merlo-aips-president/ |

manufacturing sector recorded an increase of N289bn in its output from N8.68tn in 2014 to N8.94tn at the end of December 2015, figures obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics have revealed. According to the NBS, there are 13 activities in the manufacturing sector made up of oil refining; cement; food, beverages and tobacco; textile, apparel and footwear; wood and wood products; pulp and paper products; chemical and pharmaceutical products. Others are non-metallic products, plastic and rubber products; electrical and electronic, basic metal and iron and steel; motor vehicles and assembly; and other manufacturing. An analysis of the output for the manufacturing sector showed that despite the harsh operating environment, which had led to massive job losses and closure of some industries, the sector continued to show resilience. Apart from oil refining and other manufacturing activities, which recorded a decline of N137.79bn and N3.39bn from N385.81bn and N434.49bn to N248.02bn and N431.1bn respectively, other activities in the sector experienced some level of growth. For instance, there was an increase of N145.32bn in the cement industry from N604.61bn in 2014 to N749.93bn, while the food, textile, wood and paper products industries rose from N4.24tn, N1.81tn, N238.5bn and N59.92bn to N4.29tn, N1.87tn, N259.25bn and N66.09bn, respectively. The pharmaceutical industry recorded N35.51bn increase in output from N154.61bn to N190.12bn while non-metallic products, plastics, electrical, iron and steel, as well as motor vehicles also grew from N259.28bn, N221.95b, N5.75b, N195.76bn and N67.14bn to N315.59bn, N267.16bn, N6.02bn, N207.3bn and N70.05bn in that order http://www.punchng.com/industrial-sector-records-n8-9tn-output/ |
