I believe one of the very interesting points to note is that as outspoken as she is, Oby has a husband who is closely watching her activities. She clearly has his very strong support for all that she's doing in the public sphere. Lesson for Nigerian husbands (myself included!) in general! grin wink
Politics / Stop Harassing My Wife, Ezekwesili’s Husband Warns FG by AlfaPrime: 6:05am On Jul 22, 2014
JULY 22, 2014 BY TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI 4 COMMENTS

Chinedu, the 60-year-old husband of a former Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has decried the harassment of her wife by the Federal Government.

Operatives of the State Security Service had on Monday detained the woman popularly called Oby for about 20 minutes at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja while she was on her way to board a British Airways flight to London, United Kingdom.

The former education minister and coordinator of the #BringBackOurGirls coalition almost missed her flight as her confiscated passport and other travelling documents were not released until about a few minutes before departure.

She was on her way for a scheduled appearance on the British Broadcasting Corporation flagship hard-hitting interview programme, BBC Hard Talk.

“Is this a democracy? I am being detained by the SSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The SSS has refused to give my passport to me,” she had tweeted during the encounter.

But her hubby, who pastors a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Federal Capital Territory, expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment being meted out to his wife.

Writing on Twitter, Chinedu stated that the Federal Government and the SSS had no such rights to persecute his wife for no just cause.

According to him, only terrorists should be treated in the way and manner his wife was being hounded by the SSS.

“Oby Ezekwesili’s passport was seized at the Abuja airport on her way to London this morning (Monday). Is she a terrorist or what?” he stated, while demanding answers from the authorities.

One of her sons, Chuba, could not also hide his indignation for the assault on her mother by the security agents.

The young economist, while lampooning the Federal Government stated that it was worrisome that the authorities would throw “civility and common sense” to the wind and harass a citizen demanding accountability from the government.

He hailed his mum for being up to the task to “handle anything thrown at her” by the agents of the state.

Meanwhile, Oby has thanked Nigerians who called for her immediate release during her encounter with the SSS.

She also extended her appreciation to the management and crew members of the British Airways for their consideration and patience in ensuring that she did not miss the London flight.

She linked her travails in the hands of the SSS to her involvement in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign but added that she would never back down from standing for the Chibok girls no matter the intimidation by the Federal Government.

“No one can sieze my democratic rights. I refused to let the SSS get away with trampling on my constitutional right. We had a safe touchdown at Heathrow Airport, praise God!

“Thanks also to British Airways for waiting for me and then upgrading me on this flight. Thanks to all who spoke up against the repressive act of the SSS against me this morning. You will always find help in your time of need in Jesus name.

“They cannot break me; for as long as our Chibok girls are not rescued, I shall stay standing for their cause with all people of goodwill,” she tweeted shrtly after touching down at Heathrow, London.

I pray it is not true that Oby Ezekwesili has been arrested over her role in #BringBackOurGirls. Do Presidential Advisers read History? Never again should any Nigerian be detained for his views except those involved in provable subversive activities!

Reacting to the widespread anger which followed Oby’s detention and subsequent release, a former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, Chief Dele Momodu, said the Presidency was merely making her more popular.

He explained that it was despicable that the government would resort to a crude tactic of detention to intimidate perceived opposition figures and called for an immediate stop to such harassments.

Momodu tweeted, “I pray it is not true that Oby Ezekwesili has been arrested over her role in #BringBackOurGirls. Do presidential advisers read History?

“Never again should any Nigerian be detained for his views except those involved in provable subversive activities!

“The Egyptian feminist writer, activist, psychiatrist and physician, Nawal El Saadawi, became an icon because of detention.

“Hope our Federal Government would resist the temptation of turning Oby Ezekwesili into our own Ann Suu kyi (Myanmar female pro-democracy activist); her profile is rising fast!”

A group, Enough is Enough Nigeria, said it was unfortunate that the Federal Government preferred to harass and intimidate citizens instead of collaborating with them to deliver on good governance.

“Why is our government so afraid of citizens demanding accountability? We hope it’s teaching us that there is power in our voice and consistent action! We will not be silent!” the group tweeted.

Politics / Re: Fashola Lambasts PDP Over Rally At Gani Fawehinmi Park by AlfaPrime: 10:37am On Jul 15, 2014
Interesting. One of the reasons freedom of speech (and I dare say, freedom after speech! grin ) is protected so jealously in the developed democracies of the west is because even the person in power today knows that he could very well be out of power tomorrow and in need of a platform to freely express himself either for or against the policies of the incumbent. It's foolishness for the fed government to hound subsidy protesters simply because they are in govt at the time. Now it's their turn to hold rallies and protest against the APC. MTCHEW!!!

Islam for Muslims / Re: Global Dawah Day Pictures and Updates: Sharing This Beautiful Message by AlfaPrime: 4:12pm On Jul 05, 2014
It's interesting to see how muslims are freely propagating their message all over the world without any hindrance, restriction or even fear of molestation. Unfortunately, the same CANNOT be said of Christians or proponents of ANY OTHER religion in muslim-dominated territories.

Islamic nations are some of the most restricted, closed societies. Even in the most "tolerant" of them, turning away from Islamic faith, seeking to turn away a muslim from the faith or proselytizing in any way is usually a grievous offence punishable by death.

Could it be because there is the inherent fear that in a free environment, the message of Islam stands no chance in competition with the message of the Cross, particularly when the life styles of the founders (note, founders, NOT proponents) of both faiths are placed side-by-side?

MUSLIMS WHO ARE READING THIS, JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES AND CHOOSE THE PATH OF TRUTH TODAY.

God bless.

Politics / Re: Osisikankwu,dead? by AlfaPrime: 9:15pm On Dec 13, 2010
@Kobo,
I fully share your passion for human rights protection, rule of law in Naija, etc. But truth be told, it's always easier for you to sit in the comfort of the American free society and pontificate about how he should have been captured and made to spill the beans. Do you feel the pains of those who lost their lives, properties and loved ones to this man's mayhem? Did you have to run like a refugee from a home you've known for years due to this miscreant's evil deeds? Have U known the bloodcurdling chill of sleeping and waking with the sound of gun shots richocheting in your ears? Can we be more righteous than the ordinary Abians who took to the streets in jubilation upon the news of his death?

Like someone said, Osisikankwu was a category 5 (or perhaps 50!) criminal. And excuse me, the fact that he was sponsored does NOT in any way exonorate him, He carried out the killings and rapings. Yes, he was allegedly armed by politicians, did they also instruct him to rape the aged and despoil the virgins of Aba and its environs?

And if I may ask, exactly what good would it have been to interrogate such a person? Have we forgotten the basic principles of integrity? Do you expect any reliable truth from such lips? (Perhaps he'd tell us how Jonathan supplied him with arms and logistics!) He had his day when he granted an interview to the Vanguard daily, and what did we learn? That he regarded him and his boys to be "freedom fighters"!

How many government officials fell prey to Osisikankwu's bullets? Very few if any. His was a classical case of the poor man oppressing and ravaging his fellow poor. As if Nigerians have not been harrassed enough by failed leadership, this guy insisted on unleashing the worst possible sort of nightmare upon his fellow tribesmen.

I don't support jungle justice of any sort. Osisikankwu would have been entitled to a trial and fair hearing (which he denied people during his reign of terror) PROVIDED he had peacefully turned himself in. But no, he chose to live by the sword and so he died by the gun. He insisted on firing bullets up to his last hour on earth, and wouldn't have it otherwise.
Politics / Is Osisikankwu Dead? by AlfaPrime: 7:19pm On Dec 12, 2010
Unconfirmed reports have it that the dreaded kidnap kingpin, Osisikankwu, was captured, and killed today, with his corpse currently being dragged through the streets of Aba this evening.

Can anyone confirm this? Slap1 what's the situation on ground?
Politics / Re: We Need A Hacker Just Like Assange To Get Secret Info From Efcc,fg,legislators by AlfaPrime: 7:02pm On Dec 12, 2010
Asange was once into hacking, but Wikileaks which he founded is not a hacking website. It's basically a whistle-blower website which means it provides opportunity for people who have access to confidential into to leak it to them for publishing at a later date.

Methinks the whole ado about Asange is a bit misplaced. It was people entrusted with the secret diplomatic cables that actually leaked them out to Wikileaks, who in turn published them to the press.

Do we need such in Nigeria? Well, certainly anything that would encourage a more open Government, but not at the expense of national security,
Politics / Re: One Million Five Hundred Thousand Nigerians Died by AlfaPrime: 11:59am On Dec 09, 2010
Couple of observations:
1. Over 8 million Biafrans/Nigerians died in the conflict(conservative estimates), as against the 1.5 million quoted by the OP.
2. The armed forces remembrance day serves as a day of national honour to those who paid the supreme sacrifice in that tragic war
3. There is already a national monument in their honour. The hallowed underground galleries of the National War Museum, Umuahia, Abia State remains a sacred ground where the war casualties (pictures displayed) are honoured. Try and visit the museum if you haven't.

tommyex:

My heart goes out to all those who that lost a member of their family at the JOS masacre.
May God grant you the strenght to bear the loss

Really don't know what to say about the recent Jos Mayhem, I had the privilege of having lived in Jos, actually did my NYSC there, such a lovely and peaceful city, now polluted by the frequent bloodletting. This may not be the best time to push blames here and there, but my sincere hope is that those who survived will learn the hard lessons that violence never pays.

Perhaps we should wait for testimonies of people like Pak who may have witnessed some scenes of the regrettable happenings live.

On Obama's victory, well, it seems unreasonable to be writing about that while my own home country is still grappling with it's numerous woes of a failed electoral system, but I had planned to write about Obama's historic ascendancy to the US presidency in my very next post (this one) on nairaland. I wasnt surprised by his victory, because he seemed to play his cards well. However we may see it, the truth is that race played very little effect on this year's US elections. The actual reason for this could be debatable, but I may attribute it to the horrific downturns of the economy, which left the average American with very few choices. I mean, we had several lecturers coming to tell us of how their hard earned 401K had melted away ovenight, leaving them with little choice than to consider continuing working far beyond their retirement age. Obama, on his part, played his politics in the usual pattern, no emphasis on his race or background, , he wisely chose to concentrate on issues, sezing evey opportunity to thow jabs at his opponent. I must also commend Mc Cain for his spirit of sportsmanship, after watching him closely, I had to give it to him that old John certainly didn't give racial considerations any inch at all in his campaigns. Incompetence, inexperience, and questionable sense of judgement were all bullets in his arsenal for attacking Obama, but Mc Cain clearly knew where to draw the line firmly. My heart went out to him when on more than one occasion, he had to break off the tempo of his campaign speech to correct a wrong (racial) perception of Obama by Republican supporters. One such occasion was so dramatic when Mc Cain said that Obama was "not some one to be afraid of as President of the United States" and was rather "a decent family man, citizen of the United States with whom I just happen to have fundamental disagreements". These were statements that went a long way to help Obama win the election, (and of course, helped Mc Cain lose!) I still see the two men working together in the nearest future. Maybe I think this way because I am of the younger generation who have mixed with people of all races - white, black, red, yellow, whatever, on equal terms, and seen in practical terms where people are assessed on the strength of their contributions to the team, and not on the basis of their skin colour.People who have experienced the real ugly side of racism wouldn't quite agree, but things are gradually changing.

Do I expect Obama to run a pro-black government? Certainly not! Perhaps the major advantage of his historic feat would be the encouraging of millions of hearts across the world, black and white alike, to realise that they can achieve whatever they dream to, as long as they can dream it. That inspiration, if achieved, would be far worth more than a thousand scholarships or hand-me-downs.

Lesson for our own leaders back home? Well, how many of the people in political leadership in Nigeria today were in leadership as at May 29, 1999? Very very few. I'm still studying the Nigerian experience to understand why from decade to decade, we're so eager to point accusing fingers at our "leaders" as though we haven't noticed that the faces of the key players in our political space are changing somewhat. What hypocrisy makes us do the very things we condemned from the sidelines, once we mount the saddle of leadership? Could it be because those who "win" elections in Nigeria have already sold out their independence, individuality and moral sense of concience, in exchange for the unholy "annointing" of their political godfathers? Only some can tell. Look at how peaceful Ghana's general elections were conducted today. Nigeria, O Nigeria. When shall we wake to our status in Africa?

Cheers all!
