It is what it is. He lost the mid-west territory, lost control over the Western region to Akintola and allowed the enemies of the Yoruba people to cause chaos in the land, got himself imprisoned on trumped up charges, and kept trying to make alliance with the Igbo when it is clear they meant nothing but harm for him. Only reason why things turned out halfway decently is because of the incompetence of the Igbo coup plotters and Ironsi. If they'd be somewhat reasonable in their actions (capture rather than kill leaders, place less trust in Northern soldiers, consolidate their hold on the army), the counter-coup would never have occurred and they'd be dominant in all of Nigeria today. Anyway, I'm sure he tried his best. But results are all that matter to me. And the end result would have not been very good without a fortuitous miscalculation by his enemies.
he never did, ekueme was the one that seperated the mid west from the yorubas infact there was a referendum in which edo, itsekiri vote to remain with the west but isoko urhobo said no and ekuemem used his power to push that though till today, some itsekiri still claim to be part of yoruba even there leaders joined afenefere and etc esan of edo and co still want to be part of south -western state |

The hope of countries in the West African sub-region to have a single common currency in the near future looks dim as the countries missed the convergence criteria in 2010. Minister of State for Finance, Hajia Yabawa Lawan Wabi, gave this indication while declaring open the 30th meeting of the Technical Committee of the West African Monetary Zone at the Central Bank of Nigeria head office in Abuja, on Monday. She said a review of the West African Monetary Zone countries’ economic performance in 2010 indicated that overall compliance with the macro economic convergence criteria deteriorated from three primary criteria by the end of December 2009 to two in 2010. The minister said the single digit inflation rate and fiscal deficit, excluding grants, criteria were missed. While Gambia and Ghana met three of the primary criteria, Hajia Wabi said Guinea experienced its worst performance since December, 2005 by not meeting any criterion. HajI Wabi also stated that Liberia met all the four primary criteria to maintain its December 2009 performance while Nigeria sustained its performance on the convergence scale by attaining three criteria as at the end of the June, 2010. “Sierra-Leone maintained its end-December 2009 performance of compliance with one criterion,” she said. Expressing concern over the deteriorated convergence criteria, the minister said that improving and sustaining performance on the convergence scale would require member countries to further strengthen fiscal performance by exploring innovative ways of enhancing domestic revenue mobilisation and rationalising expenditures. Advocating the injection of tax efficiency into tax administration, the reformation of the tax structure and broading of the tax base in member countries, Hajia Wabi added that expenditure rationalisation and efficiency would be needed not only to lower the fiscal deficit but also to make government expenditure more effective and productive. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17254-common-currency-for-ecowas-under-threat |
By Kenneth Ehigiator AUTHORITIES of Anambra State University have increased fees payable by students by about 150 percent as part of measures to shore up the institution’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR. The university reopened recently after a six-month of strike action embarked upon by the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other unions in the institution over improved welfare package and adequate funding of the institution. Addressing reporters at the Uli campus of the university, the new acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fidelis Okafor said that the new fees were fixed at a meeting attended by the stakeholders, including the management and officials of the Students Union Government, SUG. Details show that old students are now to pay N84,000 per session, while fresh students, who are pursuing non professional courses are to pay N108,000. Fresh students studying professional courses are to pay N128,000. Before the strike, fees paid by the students ranged from N30,000–N35,000 for all courses. According to the Vice Chancellor, the fees cover such items as student’s identity card, academic regulation, x–ray for incoming students, medical laboratory, students’ union fees, among others, adding that members of SUG saw need for the increase. He said: “The school cannot provide all the needs without increasing school fees. The agreement signed with the unions stipulates that we should increase our IGR and that is why we increased the fees. “In doing that however, we took into consideration its effects on the parents and we believe that the reasonable not such that could have negative effect on the parents.” He said that efforts were also being made to improve the staff structure, adding that while deserving academic staff would be promoted, new ones would be hired from outside. He explained that with the lifting of the ban on the admission of new students in some state –owned universities for the 2011/2012 academic session, the university was striving to conclude the present academic session by October this year, noting that the staff have agreed to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure that the lost time were recovered without lowering standards. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/02/anambra-varsity-raises-fees-by-150/ |
THE game plan of the Northern political class to explore the possibility of another option apart from President Goodluck Jonathan appears to have ended. Reason being that the key elements in the region are “totally disappointed” in the choice of a running mate announced by the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari. Rattled by the defeat of its consensus candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), led by former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, had considered other options aimed at returning power to the North. One of such options, referred to as Plan B, had been the covert move to endorse Buhari and garner support for him in the North until last week’s announcement of fiery preacher and social crusader, Pastor Tunde Bakare, as his running mate. Nigerian Tribune gathered that NPLF’s look in the direction of Buhari, apart from his wide acceptability and respect in the core North, was informed by the alliance talks between the CPC and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Buhari had announced Bakare as his running mate two days after the collapse of talks between the two parties, owing to the insistence of the ACN on former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as its preferred standard-bearer for the alliance. But Buhari’s surprise choice of Bakare, Nigerian Tribune gathered, had halted the NPLF’s plan to explore the retired general’s option. According to a source close to a leading traditional ruler in the North, the NPLF had confided in most power brokers in the region to ‘tolerate’ Jonathan for the next four years rather than support an unpopular ticket against him in the next presidential election. “I think Buhari was the person the North was really looking at to confront Jonathan; but from the turn of events, he was trying to balance religion with politics and he overdid it. “How could he pick Bakare? Is the man a politician? How many people can he control in the South-West where he hails from? These are the issues the people have gone back to look at because they appear to be totally disappointed in the general’s choice of his vice-presidential candidate. “And from the look of things, the people are already resolving to tolerate Jonathan for four years rather wasting time on a ticket that will not be possible for leaders to defend,” the source said. He said those behind the widely touted Plan B were faced with the contradiction of their earlier stance for a northerner to replace the late Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua and their support for Bakare, whom he said the North saw as the initiator of the process that led to Jonathan taking office as acting president through the proclamation of the Doctrine of Necessity by the National Assembly. Only last week, defeated presidential aspirant, Abubakar, expressed his readiness for dialogue with President Jonathan just as he said he was not leaving the PDP. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17259-buharis-choice-of-bakare-rattles-north |
