PoliticsI'm A Thorough-bred Egba Man, Says Bakare by aljharem(op): 6:31am On Feb 03, 2011
Vice-presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, Wednesday dismissed rumours making the rounds that he hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, describing himself as a thorough-bred Egba man.

Rumours were flying that both presidential candidate of the CPC, General Muhammadu Buhari, and his running mate, Bakare, were Northerners, implying that theirs is a North-North ticket since Kwara State is located in the North-central zone of the country, while Buhari hails from Katsina in North-western part of the country.

While dismissing the insinuation as an outright falsehood, Bakare, who told THISDAY through a telephone conversation Wednesday night that he was a bonafide indigene of Abeokuta in Ogun State, added that he hails from Sodeke village in the state capital which was established by Sodeke, one of the founders of Egba in 1830.

Sodeke was one of the notable warriors in Yoruba land in the 19th century, whose fame and heroic acts brought glory to Egba community.

To establish the altruism of his claim, Bakare said he could trace his genealogy up to the fourth and even fifth generations of Egba, recalling that he even built a cenotaph in honour of the memory of Sodeke, his ancestor, which he said was inaugurated by the Ogun State government.

While explaining that both his father and mother were from Abeokuta, the cleric said his father built his house in Iporo, Sodeke in 1922 where he was born 55 years ago, adding that his father’s grave is still in the house “till today”.

Bakare said while his father is now dead, his mother, who is 110 years old, still lives in Abeokuta, saying “without prejudice to the good people of Ilorin”, he has no root whatsoever in the town as being rumoured.

Bakare. who also said he had his primary and secondary school education in Abeokuta, named the schools as All Saints Primary School, Kenta and Lisabi Grammar School, Idi Aba, both in the town, adding that he is well known as a full-fledged indigene of Egba by the Alake of Egba land, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, as well as the Olowu of Owu, Oba Dosunmu.

According to him, both monarchs can attest to his claim of Egba indigeneship. He also said among his school mates in Abeokuta is the incumbent governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Bakare, who said his parents were Muslims from the outset, added that his mother only got converted in 1984, while his father died as a Muslim.

THISDAY also learnt that Bakare had once declared his ambition to run for the chairmanship of Abeokuta Local Government area of the state.

PoliticsDdc Machines: Ijaws Allege Ethnic Slant by aljharem(op): 6:28am On Feb 03, 2011
Ijaw leaders from the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State have alleged an ethnic bias in the distribution of the direct data capturing (DDC) machines in the area by the Independent National Electoral Commi-ssion (INEC).

They also blamed certain elements within the Federal Government and INEC circles for masterminding the said lopsidedness in the allocation of the vital registration equipment to the supposedly designated areas.

The leaders warned that the hard-earned peace in Niger-Delta region and Delta State in particular would be ruffled again unless “our justified complaints are quickly addressed and remedied”.

The group, under the auspices of the Warri Federal Constituency Ijaw Leaders of Thought, made the allegations Wednesday at Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of the Gbaramatu Ijaw Kingdom shortly after the official flagging off of the national voter registration in the area.

During the brief formal ceremony, the monarch of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Pere (King) Godwin K. Bebenimibo Ogeh-Gbaran III, obtained his voter’s
card alongside his wife, Queen Mary Bebenimibo, at the Fiyewei Primary School Unit of Oporoza electoral Ward from the INEC officials.
Oporoza is the hometown of ex-militant and Movement for the Emancipation of Niger-Delta (MEND) leader, Chief Government
Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, who have been playing a central role the post-amnesty programme of the Federal Government. The dreaded "Camp
5" of the mailtia was situated there. The Ijaw leaders, in a statement made available to newsmen, alleged that the allocation and distribution of the electronic registration equipment in Warri communities was slanted in favour of their Istekiri neighbours.

They said that although all available statistics in country had for long shown that the Ijaws form the majority of the population of Warri
South-West Local Government Area, INEC have deployed far higher number of the DDC machines in Itsekiri settlements.

Moreover, they claimed they have called local and international attention to what they called “the deliberate and partial delineation of wards/units in the three Warri local government areas”, namely Warri South-West, Warri South and Warri North. The group further alleged that of the total number of 299 DDC machines sent to the area in question, only 57 had been stationed in Ijaw communities; as against the 242 such machines sent to Itsekiri-dominated areas.

The Ijaw leaders noted, “INEC through its officials are still perpetrating and perpetuating this political marginalization by distributing DDC machines in reckless impunity” with Itsekiri areas given 85% of the machines deployed in Warri South-West, as against 15% to Ijaws; 75% to Itsekiris in Warri North with Ijaws given 20%; and, 75% of DDC machines sent to Warri South are in Itsekiri areas and 22% are in Urhobo areas, whereas the Ijaws communities have only three percent (3%). According to the statement, “To worsen the above scenario, INEC officials have also added salt to injury by deliberately, consciously and overtly ceding seven (7) units of Oporoza wards to Ugborodo and Madangho (all Itsekiri wards). These units are Kpokpo (two units) and Sahara (five units), in the course of the distribution of DDC machines, despite our protest against this ungodly act of daylight
robbery by the electoral officers.”

Three Gbaramatu Ijaw chiefs, Dan Ekpebide, Kenneth B. Otuaro and one-time transport commissioner Bosin Ebikeme, signed the statement titled, “The Ongoing Voter Registration: Matters arising as it Affects the Ijaws of Warri”.

Earlier, the royal father, who also lamented that the voter registration commenced in his domain about six days ago, in an exercise that officially commenced nation-wide on January 15, 2011, advised the appropriate authorities to endeavour “to extend the registration in this area to make up for the time lost simply because the necessary equipment and materials came in here very late.”

Pere Bebenimibo, however, called on all his people who have attained the voting age to come out and be registered, saying he was confident
that the INEC authorities would do the right thing by addressing the grievances of the Ijaws particularly in the Warri Federal Constituency.
“I want to earnestly appeal to INEC to do something fast to perfect the wrong, so that we can all go about our various duties in an atmosphere of peace”, the monarch stressed, nothing that the people’s power to determine how they were governed by the different leaders is encapsulated in the voter card, which enables him to choose the leaders.

PoliticsWe Killed The Guber Candidate, 6 Others – Boko Haram by aljharem(op): 6:23am On Feb 03, 2011
MAIDUGUR I— A RADICAL Muslim sect, Boko Haram, yesterday, claimed responsibility for the assassination of Borno State gubernatorial candidate for the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party, ANPP, Alhaji Modu Fannami Gubio.
This was even as another police officer was killed, yesterday, in Maiduguri less than 24 hours after a police officer was killed in the town.
In posters put up in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, Boko Haram also claimed responsibility for a series of other attacks, warning that members of the sect plan to launch “a full_scale war.”
The group also has been accused of carrying out motorcycle_mounted attacks against policemen in the area. The group’s claim of responsibility for seven recent killings appeared in posters at the post office, railway station and other locales in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
The poster stated: “We are, therefore, calling on Muslims in this part of the world to be wary because very soon, we would launch a full_scale war. We also call on the people not to sit close to where security agents or politicians are living because such people are behind the illegalities being meted on the Muslims.”Vanguard learnt that it was not the first time such posters had been put up in the area with Boko Haram’s message. In October, similar posters warned the public against assisting the police or going near soldiers guarding the town at night.
Gunmen kill another police officer in Borno

Mallam Lawal Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of Borno Police command, confirmed the incident yesterday. He said the constable was shot by gunmen on motor bikes who had attacked the DPO’s residence at night.
The police spokesman said the officer, died on the spot, adding: “Upon receiving the report of the incident, the police mobilised and chased the unknown gunmen. Unfortunately, they escaped after a long chase.’’ Abdullahi said the command had commenced full-scale investigation with a view to arresting the culprits.
Police arraign 28 suspects over Tafawa Balewa mayhem
The Bauchi State Police Command has arraigned 28 suspects for allegedly participating in the killing of some victims and destruction of property during the January 27 mayhem in Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi.
The suspects, led by Paul Luka and 27 others, were alleged to have conspired and killed some innocent victims and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
The Prosecutor, Mr. Sabon_Kasuwa Husseini, told the Chief Magistrate’s Court that the suspects committed the offence with the connivance of one Mustafa Adamu, alias “Black” Usuman Musa and Dang Ayuba, all of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, now at large.

Killings in Jos must stop—Chief of Army Staff
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika has challenged members of the Special Task Force, STF, maintaining security in the Plateau State to end the recurring violence in the state saying the killings must stop.

PoliticsYou’re Jonathan’s Spy, Acf Tells Abdurahman•sends Him Away From Meeting by aljharem(op): 6:11am On Feb 03, 2011
CHIEFTAINS of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), on Wednesday, sent away a member of its political committee, Alhaji Moham-med Abdurahman, alleging that he was an agent of the presidency .

Abdurahman had recently took exception to the controversial ACF communiqué rejecting the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the April election.

He told newsmen that from the way things were going, he feared that he might be eliminated any time, as his life was being threatened.

“I won’t want to join issues with anyone of them now. But it is true I was prevented from attending meetings and I won’t say anything further on that.

“In fact, when Waku insulted me, using unprintable words, I told him I won’t insult him, because he is an elder. But like I said, I leave everything to posterity.

“However, with the comments by our respectable chairman and the vice chairman of our Board of Trustees (BoT), the whole world knows I have been vindicated over our position on Jonathan.”

According to a source close to the ACF, the forum was expected to meet on Wednesday, with a view to reviewing the conduct of the primaries of all political parties and advised it appropriately on the next line of action.

“Mohammed had hardly arrived the venue of the meeting when about five top members of the group, including its secretary, Colonel Musa Shehu (rtd), took on Mohammed for allegedly working against the interest the group.

“The group had, at the end of its meeting last week, rejected the candidature of Jonathan. But Mohammed, the ACF chairman, General I. B. M Haruna (rtd) and the vice chairman of its BoT, Ambassador Abdullahi Ladan Shuni, have since denounced the communiqué, saying it was not the true reflection of what transpired at the said meeting, with Mohammed being the first to blow the whistle,” the source said.

He added that by the time Mohammed arrived, they started calling him Jonathan’s agent, with Senator Waku saying he did not know why Jonathan had not fired him.

“So, in the end, the chairman of the committee, Ahmed Mohammed Gusau, approached him and said since tempers were rising, and it was the decision of the majority that he should not be part of the meeting, he should just pack his things and leave. That was how Mohammed left the place,” the source added.

excanny:
I think Abagworo is quite right. Under normal circumstances, spellings are quite irrelevant and do not always determine how a word is to be pronounced. So on that note, I'll agree that 'Igbo', 'Ibo', 'Heebo', 'Ebo', etc are okay if and only if the proper pronunciation is maintained.

But I think the 'Igbo' is a better guide to the actual pronunciation of the language, people and place.

P.S  Unfortunately the 'gb' in Igbo and in the neighbouring Yoruba 'gb' are very different in sound. But it can be a close guide for anyone who  wants to learn how to pronounce it in Igbo.

The point now is to let our Northern countrymen to know is that the time is up. Enough is enough. The game is over!

The country will split, you have no vision or strategy for our collective existence all you desire is a monopoly
on power and subjugating others. It's time to split amicably, please lobby your elders, enough is enough

@alhajrem, what is the Pride in what EKOILE said? It was a well known fact that it was a YORUBA man that plan how to effectively wear out the ibos AWOLOWO, it is also a known fact that it was YORUBA military men who stepped in and flogged the sense out of you ibos. OBASANJO
we all know it is a known fact, but does it mean that yorubas have to start rubbing it on there faces undecided

we igbos know and we are not denying it, but please do not try to make fun of it

Ode, he was asked to. There's a huge difference between backside kissing and being begged to join in.
