The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has said the free education policy of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was the fillip that gingered his administration’s efforts to tackle the educational challenges in the state. Banking on the success of the administration in the areas of infrastructural development and enhancement of the people’s standard of living, the governor challenged critics of his administration and independent-minded assessors to visit the state to see things for themselves. Akpabio, who was speaking at the Jogor Centre, Liberty Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday on the occasion of his investiture as the Tribune titles’ Man of the Year, said he decided to tackle militancy, insecurity and sundry social problems with free and compulsory education up to senior secondary level. He lauded Chief Awolowo for pioneering free education in the country, saying that Akwa Ibom people were some of the beneficiaries of the programme, some of whom he said are now professors and highly respected citizens in their own right. He also said that his free education pro-gramme was targeted at all children resident in the state irrespective of their state of origin. According to the Akwa Ibom State helms man, ” I see a lot of relationships between the Tribune papers, its founders, Oyo State and Akwa Ibom State. The first celebrated policy of free education was in the then Western Region of Nigeria, and a lot of Akwa Ibom people also benefitted, particularly those that were in the then Ikeja, which was part and parcel of the Western Region. And many years after, we decided to also tackle the issues of militancy, the issue of insecurity, the issue of underdevelopment and all others with education.’’ Akpabio further said that the results obtained in the education sector so far had dwarfed his expectations. The governor stated that most of the young children in the state, who hitherto had no future by virtue of being born to underprivileged parents, now had a future, with the huge turnout and the rise in student population. “By the time we started the compulsory and free education policy, we did not know that we were going to triple school enrolment. Today, schools are bursting with children; we have tripled school enrolment in less than two years in Akwa Ibom. “We opened our free education policy in the state to all Nigerians, all Nigerian children resident in Akwa Ibom State. The only difference there is that we are doceeded, ‘’ he said. ing it from primary school all the way to senior secondary school. And then, we also have a policy of paying subvention, N100 per child per term in the primary school to each headmaster and N300 per student per term to the school principal for logistics. “That way, the question of not having money for chalk or other things did not arise. And we have abolished all fees; we pay WAEC fees of our children and I can tell you that over 600 children came from Gabon and other places. Some of them were travelling for child prostitution. So you can see what effect of lack of education had done to a lot of families,’’ he said. While thanking the Tribune titles for the honour done to him, Akpabio said that the titles remained the best in the country in the area of investigative reporting, adding that their forthrightness, courage and readiness to tell the truth at all times had elevated journalism practice in the country and ensured that performing administrations in the country were duly recognised. He urged the management of the company to keep the flag flying. “In far away Oyo State, Tribune newspapers recognised our efforts in Akwa Ibom. I think that you are one of the best newspapers in the country. In terms of reporting, investigating and all that, no one can beat Tribune. “In terms of forthrightness, in terms of telling the truth, no one can beat Tribune. I would say that Tribune is the longest surviving private newspapers in Africa. Tribune is still existing 61 years after it was established. I doff my heart for the originators of this project. I want to applaud the management of Tribune and plead with you to keep the flag flying. “As a government, we will continue to identify with Tribune because you stand for the truth. Our prayer is that those who are now in charge of this family (Awolowo family) will keep this wonderful medium open for all Africans. Tribune must never be allowed to die,” he said. Akpabio said that his achievements in office would stand the test of time. According to him, “no matter how the opposition will try, the three major flyovers in Akwa Ibom inaugurated by the President Goodluck Jonathan will stand the test of time. My children that are now in school receiving education will remember our policy. The 204 new urban roads, 49 in Eket and dotting the landscapes are there for all to see. “The five grand new hospitals that we completed are there for you to see. I will welcome you in a brand new Governor’s Lodge. If you are coming to Akwa Ibom, you are are going to land in one of the most fantastic runways in the country.” Akpabio also lauded his fellow awardee, governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, for his efforts at tackling the rot in the banking system. “When Mallam Sanusi started his revolution in the banking sector, many people misunderstood it. But the fact that today we are not panicking to withdraw our money will show clearly that he has succeeded, ‘’ he said. http://tribune.com.ng/sat/index.php/front-page-articles/3098-im-carrying-out-awos-free-education-policy-in-aibom-akpabio-.html |
