TV/MoviesWill Nigerian Films Ever Be Shown In Cinemas Outside Africa? by Allenpowered(op): 8:33am On May 11, 2005
Well, granted there has been some improvements by some producers in some films - the Nigerian film industry still has a long way to go. One sees immediately the poor quality of work that went into it (maybe except for some film directors like Tunde Kelani, Ola Balogun).

One begins to wonder when are we going to start taking the world by storm. I know Nigerian films have a great demand in Africa, but I would like to wonder when are they going to be shown to a global audience in cinemas like UCI, Cineworld, Apollo and the likes
TV/MoviesRe: Silverbird Cinemas, Nigeria by Allenpowered(m): 8:14am On May 11, 2005
I feel what trish feels, too. I actually look out for Silverbird adverts before I make my choice in going for movies. Funny. Well, I check out some ratings too. Anyhow, the cinema idea is a cool one. I really hope it lasts.

AutosRe: 4,000 naira fine for use of cellphone while driving as from 1st of July (FRSC) by Allenpowered(m): 7:54am On May 11, 2005
I think the punishment for the use of mobile phones while driving is long overdue. It has been a constant source of worry to me. The attendant loss of concentration while answering phone calls may lead to catastrophic results. I even feel the use of earpieces to answer phone calls while driving is not too right. The company I work with does not allow it. And believe me, there has been no accidents for 2 years.

Our speed limits should also be reviewed. Our roads in Nigeria are not the best, but men we have the fastest drivers in the world! I wonder why we no get anybodi for F-1 or NASCAR

Also the issue of herdsmen and their cattle haphazardly criss-crossing the road should be looked into, traders on the high and ''un-roadworthy" cars.
PoliticsPresident Obasanjo's third term bid. How possible? by Allenpowered(op): 12:33pm On May 03, 2005
A lot of hype has been on now on Obasanjo's bid for a third term.Thought he president has denied this, the rumour miss is awash with such indications. And in Nigeria, neglecting what comes from the grapevine is at your own peril.

A lot of newspapers are reporting on the purpoted move by obj's cronies for his self succession. The links are below. I find this disheartening, for anyone to even think up such mundane and undemocratic idea. These links tell better stories:

PoliticsRe: Why do no-hopers go into politics? by Allenpowered(m): 11:16am On May 03, 2005
The most interesting thing about democracy is the freedom. Its their right to contest and i guess they all want to execise their country given right.

Hey, what would the 2003 elections have been without Okotie's grammer...no fun, or Moji Obasanjo's obstinacy.I guess they add a little fun to such serious matter as politics. It happens the world over.

As an English fan who supports a perpetually losing side in the first division once said "my inspiration is in the losing"

some people don't know how to cut the line and count their losses, they have to go all da way!
PoliticsRe: EFCC's charges against former Police Inspector-General Tafa Balogun (FYI) by Allenpowered(m): 11:00am On May 03, 2005
Man, that was a hell of accusation to be made against one man. I guess not from the days of Al Capone the Chicago crime boss has such been made.

But what has not ceased to surprise me is the relative ease with which Tafa Balogun was able to secure bail. despite the "overly" stringent terms. Also the court conspiracy not to let us know his "bailers" smacks of something like the "big boys" connections at work.

Its all good, this is Nigeria.

I guess a lot of people are beginning to take interest in our situation. Well the British press is taking note.

Hey Seun, do you miss out of the fun, or do you miss out of the fun?

Man, those black brodas and sisters are the funny guys. I have not seen a funny white fellow after Frank Spencer (Some Mothers Do Have Them) and Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean)
TV/MoviesRe: Low-cost Digital Cable in Nigeria by Allenpowered(m): 12:42pm On May 02, 2005
shallar1, i'm not sure the stuff will work in ogun state for the simple fact that there needs to be a cable base station in the vicinity for it to work. i have been in abeokuta a number of times and i have not seen anyone use it.

u have to make do without it for some time i guess wink
ComputersRe: To Create Broadband Internet Access by Allenpowered(m): 12:19pm On May 02, 2005
Well NITEL has got something new on the block. They now have their own fibre optics. I do hope it works; they've been touting it as the best thing that will happen to Internet access in Nigeria. It is meant to be cheaper and more easily accessible. My prayer, again, is "I hope it works".
RomanceRe: Would You Date An Older Girl? by Allenpowered(m): 12:16pm On May 02, 2005
Mr. Administrator, I really do like your stance on this. But I should tell u dating is a big game, it has it own set of rules. but the reality is if a guy is taking a gal out what does he want? wink

I would say 90% of guys have ulterior motives believe me! lipsrsealed It may be stated or not but the underlying motive is there. And from what I've seen a lot of gals seem to know this....
I do really admire you...u seem a bit like a puritan, having fun for some does not end in chattin and laughing.

And of course anwering the original question will I date an older girl....sure and why not?, if she's fun to be with and does not remin me of my aunts, mom or grand mom(sorry I don't have an older sister) grin. But to be candid its hard for me...I may get to think sometimes'hey this could be my mama' and that kills the fun!

So I guess when I won't date an older girl is when she 's not fun to be with, she's stuck up, behaves like grand ma or looks like grand ma grin

CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Allenpowered(m): 11:53am On May 02, 2005
It is a very funamental question u ask: Why These Discriminations Between B.Sc & HND?

The question is got multi faceted answers. It requires a lot of other questions to be asked, a lot of sugggestions to be made and the x-raying of the Nigerian policy on technical education.

I'm not a government policy maker, but one needs to keep in perspective the whole essence of technical education. It was never meant to be an equivalent of the university degree (that to me is sad).Technical education was designed by DEGREE holders- so what do u expect? But I think the average Nigerian student should well be aware of this before he/she ventures into the polytechnic...Nigeria is a very certificate focused ccountry- u are most likely judged by your certificate or by your bank account.

This I think leads me to the second issue, there is really no need for the polytechnic graduate to feel inferior if things were in place in the country. In fact a poly graduate is supossed to handle the technical aspects of the economy which is not what is obtainable in our dearest country.

I would say your friend who wanted to go for the MBA is very fortunate he(or she) was told to do a PGD.In the University of Ibadan, he would have had to start from year three. Its that bad. What I think should be done is:

1.The polytechnic graduate should be involved in the making of policies for technical education, as long a others make policies for them they'll get no where.

2. The standard of education in our polytachnics should be raised. There is no denying the fact that many of our polytehnics are not what they should.
This could be done by making the entry requirements the same as our universities.

3. Technical education should be given more place of importance in the Nigerian polity. It should be seen as the engine through which development can be achieved.
It is only through this that an HND holder will be able to have his/her rightful place in the scheme of thing.

In the Nigerian civil service today, there is a barrier to the height the HND holder can reach.He/She can only get to be an assistant director- the post of deputy director, director, permanent secretary or head of service os forever beyond his/ her reach. How sad. A lot of brains barred from excellence because they had the misfortune of following the wrong channel.
PoliticsRe: Debt Forgiveness: Nigeria Ready for a showdown! by Allenpowered(m): 8:03pm On Apr 30, 2005
The debtor finally has found his(or is Nigeria her?) voice and she's ready to tell all the world that " bros i don tire!)

Nigeria has pleaded for debt forgiveness, but she has been told she's not qualified to be forgiven. Our debt profile keeps rising( its funny sometimes when the president and the creditors even disagree over tyhe exact volume of our debts!)

I for one is in support of Nigeria as a country refusing to pay such debts(of course, who likes paying debts- its damn hard you know!)

But in this, there are things we have to take into cognisance, what was the deal when we signed the bonds for the credit? how does it tell on our integrity(you loan money and you are reusing to pay!),how sincere will our future leaders be in the future as regards the issue of debts, loans and letters of credit? which efforts are we making not be in the mire again, (say for example we are able to get off the debts as easily as we want to,how do we plan to manage our economy without having to go aborrowing again?)

I think it is still in our best interest as a country to get the issue of this credit behind us by seeking the

a. Complete debt forgiveness, if this is not possible

b. Discounting of our debts

c. But I think above all, we need our economy to be given a boost. DIVERSIFICATION!

d. A new crop of leaders, not those who pay lip service to corruption

e. Believe me, if we are forgiven this debt, I am sure we will soon start to incur more debts, except there is a complete reorientation of the average Nigerian psyche.
