STENON: Thank you so much for your response and my sincere apology for just responding to your post. Goodmorning and how have you been sir? I am very grateful for the clarification concerning funding sir. After replying the emeritus of my willingless to accept the lab instructor position, He later requested for my CV and transcripts and I forwarded to him. Just few minutes ago, He asked me to submit my application ASAP so as to get my visa before resumption date. He also asked me to send a mail to another Prof. that I am the same Person as Stella I. on my transcript against Stella A. that is on my email address. He mentioned that he recommended Stella A. for graduate school before seeing Stella I. on my transcript. Finally, He said I should be ready for skype interview anytime soon. I am scared of what to expect during skype interview because I have never done such before.
Cc: Quoran Time2Smile Scholastica16 and other great people of this forum Hello Stenon! I am doing just fine. Thank you. This is great news! Just submit your application as requested by the emeritus. As for the Skype interview, I will advise you go through your basic undergraduate physics. It is nothing to be scared about. Just look at it as a chat. He will not ask you cumbersome questions. The last time I had a Skype interview with a faculty, I was asked basic questions such as Newton's laws of motion, What are electromagnetic waves, what kind of practicals did you conduct as an undergraduate student etc. I will advice you go through his research and understand the basic principles of physics behind them. For instance, if his research centers on materials physics, you should know stuffs like Bragg's law, (conductors, semiconductors and insulators), defects in materials, miller indices and all that stuff. Don't dwell too much on his papers because you will probably not understand his work. Just get an idea of his research focus and nail that interview. Regards! |

Time2Smile: I think you should allow her get the full offer with the details first, and then she can make a decision to accept or reject the offer. Congratulations to Quoran, that was really impressive. Okay. I was advising based on the fact that she is yet to apply. If she has applied already, she should just go ahead. I just believe she would get a better ranked school based on her profile. That application fee should be channeled well. |

STENON: In another news, An Emeritus of Physics at SJSU california replied my mail and asked me to apply for 2018 fall admission . He asked if I am interested to be employed as a Lab instructor in that department and he'l provide full funding for me. Hmmmmmm.. . But I dont know how to reply him that I am not good in that aspect as lab instructor but just a research assistant. Please kindly advice me on this Hi Stenon! Except he is going to negotiate a full tuition waiver with graduate school(which is not always easy, the best you might get is an out-state excess waiver, which means you have to pay in-state tuition), I will advise you reconsider the offer. From experience, a POI at SJSU will pay max $15/hour for 20hours half time work. This amount will barely offset your cost of living in California. They may call it a full funding, but, in the real sense, it's not. You may consider the offer, if however, you have a means of paying your tuition. Regards! |

reDazey: My Second Experience I will start by congratulating everyone who has an admission. It is truly an arduous journey. More congratulations to those with funding and all the best to those still awaiting funding. I must add that it is not over till you hear from all your schools. Last year, I can recall a close friend who got an admit with full funding in May. Hope still dey!
I want to encourage someone here today with my story. Never give up on yourself and your dreams. When you plan to retry, find out the actions that failed you and learn to change your strategy for success. Finally, keep trying if you believe so much in a vision till you achieve it.
This is the period where most of us sit and wait with bated breath, hoping and praying that our admission with some sort of financial funding drops into our mailbox. I pray everyone gets their heart desires.
Last year, I was in a similar position. I felt dejected, some of us can relate to this emotion. Lots of admissions with no funding. I applied to combinations of (MSc and Ph.D.) in Statistics/Maths. Got some rejections and some acceptances( without funding). It was a terrible blow because I felt I had a good profile. (GPA 3.6/4(WES), GRE 318, TOEFL 109). However, I learned some important lessons. It is not always about one aspect of your profile. LORs and SOPs are very important.
Having been out of school for a while and working in an IT-intensive organization; I overlooked my IT skills which were going to be advantageous. I got some advice from several persons, I selected the ones I felt will work for me and dropped the rest. So for Fall 2018, I restrategized, applied to CS programs. Also, I realized I did not take some risk on my former school list (Sirriddy and Scholastica16 encouraged me to aim higher).
So this year, I reapplied to 5 Ph.D. programs 1. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (pending) 2. The University of Utah (rejected) 3. Kansas State University(accepted with full funding) 4. The University of Alabama (accepted, no funding. I did not bother to ask for any.) 5. College of William and Mary(accepted with full funding, being considered for fellowship) Also, to "avoid stories that touch", I applied to Georgia Southern (MSc Mathematics and I was accepted with a funded GTA position)
I thank God for the courage to try one more time and I pray that everyone finds a reason to believe in themselves and keep pushing. Special thanks to the extraordinary persons that supported me throughout this journey; Sirriddy(you are just too much), divabiola, jaybiz007, Scholastica16, MsNas, dramaka). Thank you guys for being more than friends. Congrats! I always knew something great was cooking up for you! |

STENON: I am finally here. My Profile : Applicant for 2018 fall Submitting my application by next monrh Cgpa : 4.64/5.00 BSc (Ed.) Physics Education 2 years of teaching experience Writing my GRE by next month Not registering for TOEFL My fear is changing from Physics Education to MSc Physics. No Publication in Physics One publication in Physics Education plus two conference proceedings in Physics Education.
Please I need your advice and suggestion on the schools that can accept me for MSc in Physics based on my profile.
Thank you Hi Stenon! You have got a very nice undergraduate profile. However, getting into a Msc physics program will depend on your undergraduate transcripts and the schools you are interested in. Most graduate programs in physics require that you have undergrad knowledge of Classical Mechanics, Quantum Physics, Statistical Mechanics and Electrodynamics. Also, you need to inquire from graduate coordinators of the schools you are applying so that you can know where you stand before applying. As a rule of thumb, it is expected that you prepare for graduate school at least one year ahead of your proposed study semester. I can see you haven't written the GRE or TOEFL which will make it very difficult to get a nice school for Fall 18. Therefore, I will advise you take your test and focus on Fall 19. As a physicist, you could search for schools on: www.gradschoolshopper.com , here, you would see different programs categorized according to acceptance rates, financial aid package, GRE/TOEFL requirement amongst others. This website is a very powerful tool for prospective graduate physics students. Should you have further questions, do not hesitate to contact me. |

Hence, Standard deviation. gokuu: One thing you have to take note of is that what you’re paying for in these top programs is “access” to their professional network. But beyond the introductions, you will need to have a strong profile that speaks to the human capital needs of the organization. What you have done in your professional career? How exactly can that add value to their firm?
Of course, elite schools/programs have a significant advantage because their alums tend dominate Wall Street and DC politics and many industries, and connection is almost everything in America. But you must bring something to the table that goes beyond a degree certificate.
And, “averages” can be misleading. In the simplest form, an average of two individuals where one earns 250k and the other earns 50k, is 150k. The story behind the number is crucial. |
