Exactly what happens when Grace meets with Hardwork! Congrats! drhopeful: Hi brothers and sisters, I just want to share a testimony so others may also benefit.
I took the advice of friends and many co-nairalanders to start contacting Profs prior to making applications. I think I mailed about 4 and even sent reminders but none of them responded. I gave up at some point to focus on preparing for my standardized tests. After my first GRE attempt, knowing I was going to retake, I started contacting grad coordinators about their multiple GRE policy. Only one grad coordinator was nice enough to respond - in addition to answering my question, basically told me how high their admissions standards are and how they rarely admit international students and that all their admits are exceptional students. I just went.....Ok blah blah. Granted Top 30ish school. Needless to say, I felt deflated. I was never going to waste my money and apply. I searched for a lower ranked school to replace it with. After my repeat GRE exam, I decided to start making my applications and I said to myself, drhopeful you are a fighter, you never give up trying, not now. I applied to that school amongst others. To my greatest surprise, a week after submitting my app, a prof from the said school mailed me. Someone I never contacted. And at this point, my application was still incomplete; I was still waiting on one letter of recommendation. So you can imagine the shock. The prof went on and on about how impressive my application was, and that he wants to skype asap to discuss potential research topics and answer any questions I may have. Anyway, Skype conversation was two days after and might I say, the man seems the nicest advisor to work with.
Ok end of my story. I just needed to encourage someone. Good night guys. |

Additional tips to aid choosing/applying to universities:
1. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT apply to universities in a hurry with a mediocre GRE. There's absolutely no hurry, and you could postpone the intake by a semester or an entire year, if need be. Getting into a mediocre university with a mediocre GRE is a lose-lose situation; does no good to anybody in the end of the day.
2. It's true that ranks don't matter, but don't use that as an excuse to settle for whatever university you get. This is another grievous mistake that candidates commit. Better the university you get into, better are your chances of working in better equipped labs and tutored by brilliant professors.
3. A university that's highly renowned for one department might be downright mediocre for another. For example, University of Arizona's Eller College of Management is the fourth best school in the U.S. for MIS, while not that good for other courses. Keep that in mind while probing the department's strength/weakness.
4. Although it's technically possible to transfer to another university after the first semester, it comes with its own bundle of hassles. For once, the credits you've earned in the present university might or might not be fully transferred to the prospective university. Furthermore, it's cumbersome to get acclimated to a new university and start fresh in the middle of the academic year. Attempt to transfer if and only if you feel you can not at all survive in the university.
5. Choose departments solely based on your interest and passion, not on the basis of job market. Job market is highly unpredictable, and it's not worth risking getting into something you don't like doing. Trust me, academics in MS is highly research-oriented and hectic. You wouldn't survive a day with the courses you loath/hate learning about.
6. Choose universities according to what works best for your scenario, your interests. Blindly getting into a university just because you've been told that it's really "awesome" for the course you're looking for can backfire. Go through the curriculum/syllabus carefully before deciding.
Hope these points help u ! Cc |

Hi y'all. Found one post regarding applications. For fall 2017 students-
Hope most of you've applied or at least started applying to universities, by now. Here are some of the points that will aid you in picking your prospective university and some miscellaneous info:
1. Try to choose the university that provides you funding as far as possible. It could save you tons of money when you graduate. Trust me, a rank difference of 30-50 seldom reflects on your profile in the U.S.
2. Ranks only matter if you graduate from the Ivy Leagues or top-ten ranking universities in your stream. Leaving that aside, almost all the universities are treated the same when searching job, as far as brand name is concerned.
3. Probe the course content of your prospective university before finalizing the university. Most often, people select university just for its glitzy brand name and end up suffering, owing to the poor/dissatisfying course content. It's highly subjective and a prior research on this aspect is a must.
4. Try to give some preference to the location of the university. Find the best mix of urban setting with low living-expense. Blindly choosing a university located in a rural setting to cut down on living expense will backfire on you, and it will wear you out. You could lose interest in the university in a couple of months which is located in such dry places.
5. Try to avoid universities in locations that are deemed very "unsafe". Trust me, even under normal circumstance, the U.S. isn't safe for pedestrians (assuming you do not buy a car until you graduate and get a job.) You're ten-times likely to be mugged/shot at if you're going by foot rather than a vehicle.
6. Being financially sound in the first few months in the U.S. is a must. You'd end up spending lot more than you'd anticipated. Therefore, make necessary financial arrangement to bolster your lifestyle until you get a part-time.
7. Getting part-times is highly subjective and depends on your luck. Start applying as soon as you land, even before settling. That's the trick to clinch a job, giving you an edge over other applicants.
8. Try to purchase the books of your intended course from Nigeria Books are costlier than mobile phones in the U.S.! Most of us end up studying from the PPT provided by the professor, owing to this reason.
Finally, have a realistic expectation when moving to the U.S. Half of your dreams about things to do be done in the U.S. would be shattered even before your first semester. Do not get disheartened by having colossal expectations.
Good luck with your application processing. Cc |

bigfido: Hello guys, please my wife is applying for MSc, economics at MUN. Her BSc is in economics too. Do we need to find her a supervisor? She has been trying to send email for reference from her dashboard but recipients are not getting the email. Are we doing anything wrong? You are getting it wrong! For MUN you need to send this link: www.mun.ca/become/graduate/Academic_letter_of_appraisal_2012.pdfDirectly to your recommenders email with your name, DOB and Memorial Student Number. They will in turn fill it and send it directly to gradapply@mun.ca At this point it will appear on her dashboard. |
