Man arraigned for raping, aborting pregnancy for teenage house girl

A 51-year-old man, Mr. Oluseye Sofolahan, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Senior Magistrate's Court in Abeokuta for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

Sofolahan, who allegedly impregnated the teenager in the process, was also accused of aborting the pregnancy at a private hospital.

However, the teenager, who is Sofolahan's house girl, developed complication and she was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

The police prosecutor, Mr. Banji Sangotokun, told the court that Sofolahan, an auto mechanic, took advantage of the teenager when his wife travelled for four days on a business trip .

Sangotokun said, "The crime was committed on October 15 and the suspect, who lived at Adatan area of Abeokuta, raped the girl when his wife travelled. When he discovered that the girl was pregnant, he took her to a private hospital in Isabo area of Abeokuta for abortion.

"The abortion was not properly done at the hospital and the girl later developed complication. She was rushed to the FMC in Abeokuta ."

Sofolahan's lawyer, Mr. Olayinka Omosanya, pleaded that the court should grant the suspect bail.

But Sangotokun objected the bail application on the ground that it took a lot of efforts before the suspect could be arrested.

He said Sofolahan could jump bail if the request was granted, adding that the private hospital's doctor, who carried out the abortion, was already at large.

The Chief Magistrate of the court, Mr. Ogidi Stanley, ordered that the suspect should be remanded in prison custody.

He adjourned the case to February 9, 2011, and ordered the arrest of the fleeing doctor.

A financial audit carried out by the Ministry of Police Affairs has uncovered about 107, 000 ghost officers in the Nigeria Police Force and billions lost to fraud by police accountants and pay officers.

The exercise which commenced in September, 2010 uncovered fraudulent bank accounts through which monies were being siphoned by officers in charge of Mechanised Salary Sections, Police Pay Officers and accountants in all the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.

About N6 billion were recovered within two months which would have been stolen by the pay officers and their collaborators in some commercial banks.

Already, some pay officers with Abia State Police Command have been arrested and were being quizzed over their roles in the financial scam in their state.

The massive fraud came to light during a meeting by the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim with MSS Officers and PPOs at the Force headquarters on Tuesday.

Ringim said that the consultant in charge of the audit, Mr. Bayo Adeyemo, discovered that the staff strength of the Force was not up to the 377,000 official figure.

He added that the audit also established the fact that bank officials connive with Police Pay Officers to steal money, noting that investigation had commenced and indicted officers would be prosecuted and jailed.

He said that pay officers often delayed payment of salaries unnecessarily while complaints of variated salaries and allowances by officers in some state commands were received daily. He observed that some pay officers had been found to have made multiple payments into accounts.

In one instance, the IGP added, about N15m was paid into some accounts monthly while cheques were also cashed in flagrant violation of government regulations that all payments must be done through e-payment.

Ringim recounted his experience when a pay officer in one of the state commands where he served attempted to give him stolen money, but he said that he declined the offer. "The pay officer said the money was for my expenses for staying in a hotel, but I rejected it because I don't want to fall into any trouble. The day they arrest him, he would mention my name. Some of you (pay officers) will go to jail," he said.

The police boss who frowned at the level of fraud and corruption in the MSS, stated that he had taken a decision to invite police accountants and pay officers as well as their civilian counterparts who were not under the direct authority of the Force.

He said, "On a daily basis, we receive complaints from men in Abuja and outside that their salaries have been unduly cut. Some state commands pay constables N16,000, some pay N18, 000 without reasons. Some accuse the MSS and pay officers and we are going to change those responsible this; government money is not a free thing for all to be converted to personal use.

"I have received complaints over and over that police salaries are deliberately delayed. It shouldn't happen in the police because it is an embodiment of law and order. All policemen that have served in MSS for two years must be changed as well as civilians. Salaries and emoluments that should have been paid by 27 and 28 of the month drag on and on. I will stamp out this fraud completely. I have low tolerance for such conduct. A lot of you will go to jail because too much government money has been stolen."

The catch here is that men are very careless and forgetful. If they start removing the ring whenever they want to cheat, they are bound to be forgetting it either in their pocket or car when they come home. Now, a clever woman should ask him why his ring left his finger in the first place. Thank God every man is not an oil rig worker or gynecologist.

I must have one of those rare marriages because, we did not get wedding rings for our marriage.

It doesn't really but it does mark the man out so that women will notice that he is taken at first glance. Women are good at noticing wedding bands more than men. So, even if you don't want or need one, it is advisable to permanently weld one on your husband's fingers. Men will be men and many of them will prefer not to be noticed by the next chic as married.

What is wrong with Nigerian teenagers today is hopelessness and so much poverty. If you look at that boy very well, you will notice that he is unnaturally very  dark and malnourished. His eyeballs looks cocky and hangs on the socket because his body is very malnourished; his skin is sun burnt because of excessive exposure to heat and what's more, he has no hope of getting his daily bread in years to come. The wedding ring is the most famous and instantly recognisable symbol of the joining of a man and woman together as husband and wife in the institution of marriage. As simple as it may look, the wedding ring has a long and widespread history, with diverse accounts being told by different cultures.

Rarely is there a wedding without a wedding ring. The significance of every other thing about a wedding pales beside that of a ring. Imagine what would happen if the couple discover the bridesmaid forgot to come along with the rings. Such an incident would be labelled a taboo. Exchanging of rings between the bride and groom constitutes an utmost part of a wedding.

By wearing rings on the fourth finger after marriage, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other and are expected to wear and brandish the piece of jewellery wherever they go.

A close look at societal trend, these days, reveals that not only are rings going into extinction among married couples, with the men emerging the worst culprits, little or no importance is attached to it, especially by those who have been married for a number of years and still counting.

Providing insight into why some persons, especially the male folk, prefer to go without their wedding rings, Dipo Olatunji, an accountant with a multinational who has been married for a little above two years said, "I have put on some weight since I got married. As such, the ring no longer fits and I don't see why I should expend thousands of naira getting another one as my wife has suggested. My wife is particularly miffed by my action and she picks up quarrels with me at intervals over my outright refusal to get another ring."

Tony claims he is very practical and that his decision not to adorn a ring is not borne out of a desire to indulge in extra-marital affairs. "I can't speak for other men because I know I am unusual in thinking this way. I would never wear a wedding ring because I refuse to wear jewellery due to my own personal beliefs. I could never own any jewellery or anything else that is purely decorative. I am a practical person first and foremost and I believe everything about me and everything I own should have a use and a function of some sort. That is why I do not own anything decorative at my home either."

An oil rig worker, Chinedu, says he only wore his ring for the first few months after his marriage to make his wife happy. "I work as a drill man and the ring becomes uncomfortable when I am at work. Initially, I resorted to putting it back on after work, but being an absent-minded person, I sometimes fail to remember."

"I have been married for almost two decades and only stopped wearing my ring last year, yet my wife would not let me be," says Eze. Continuing, he adds that his decision to do away with his ring is because he had been wearing it for too long. "Everyone already knows I am married and I don't really need a ring to impress my marital status on them. With a ring or without one, I can cheat on my wife if I choose to. Some ladies even prefer married men; so, what difference would my wearing a ring make?"

Tonye does not like women to know he is married and he is not shying away from that fact. "I don't like to let other women know that I am already married. I think that is one reason why I don't like to wear a wedding ring. Of course, when a girl knows that a man is already married, she will not flirt with him anymore. Some guys still want to flirt, even when they are already married, and I fall into that category. For some men, it might be they are not happy with their wives or because they do not love their wives anymore, or they are already separated. I still love my wife but desire concubines."
