I have been asked by numerous people about why I decided to stay out of Nigeria as a gay man. I decided to stay out because I came to self-acceptance and reject Criminalization of my sexuality. Apart from Sharia law applicable in the Northern part of Nigeria, Chapter 21, Articles 214 and 217 of the Nigerian penal code is a threat to any conscious and openly gay person in Nigeria. Based on the publicity Cletus has received, he could become a source of exploitation for the Nigerian police. I feel for Cletus. The worst of death for me while in Nigeria, and before I came to self-acceptance, was the struggle in the closet. The fear and hurt from rejection when people know your secret. Living like that for anyone who is conscious of self-dignity and who longs for integrity is a prison without wall. Such a person needs freedom. If Cletus is actually gay, he needs help from the world to be set free so are all gays and lesbians in Nigeria or who are Nigerians. Not necessarily freedom to move out of Nigeria, but freedom to live in freedom in the land of our birth. (To me any place open to freedom and security is home, but I am not advocating a trans-Atlantic gay migration.)People, why so much hatred on our fellow human beings over their sexuality?. Hate the act but not the person please. |

Hard knocks for Obasanjo as Eso, Soyinka honoured in New York By Funke Aboyade In New York, 11.22.2010 Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was given a fail mark and his government from 1999 to 2007 described as 'the most lawless years we have known' by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka in New York, last Saturday. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/23/206.html The remarks were made at an Awards Dinner to honour Retired Supreme Court Justice, Kayode Eso and Soyinka by the Nigerian Lawyers Association, in New York. Eso was the 2010 recipient of the Association's Law and Justice Award, whilst Soyinka received its Lifetime Achievement Award. Eso who was unable to attend due to last minute changes in his schedule accepted the honour via a recorded video message in which he expressed his regret at being unable 'to attend personally to accept the lofty award' and his delight and enthusiasm in accepting it. In his message to the Association he admonished, 'Pursuit of justice must be our goal. A law which does not seek justice is not law. There must be pursuit of justice by a lawyer unto death!' NLA President, Ms Folake Ayoola and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Association, Mr. Kunle Deru accepted the award on his behalf on Eso's request. Soyinka who was physically present to receive his award expressed 'great delight' and thanked the Association for the honour. He charged lawyers that they had a lot of work to do now that Nigeria is in a democracy. 'The years following military rule were some of the most lawless years we have known' he said. 'There was abysmal abuse of the rule of law and the Judiciary was bastardised. Court decisions were flouted, the most notorious being the withholding of revenue allocation to Lagos State' he asserted, in reference to Obasanjo's government. 'Even the military pretended to respect the law; even Abacha made motions of attempts to respect the law!' the Nobel Laureate said. Saying that the situation brought tremendous shame to Nigeria he said, 'The exponential degree of corruption in the Judiciary began under Obasanjo's regime. Today, many judges can be bought for two a penny'. He charged Nigerian lawyers to begin the process of reforming the law in Nigeria saying that cases took too long to dispose of. 'I have at least two libel cases which have been going on for over 15 years; why should I wait over 15 years for justice?' he queried. The dinner which took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Times Square was a convivial evening with traditional dance entertainment, a fashion show, auction of five New York-Lagos return Arik air tickets, music and dance. One of the highlights of the evening was provided by renowned Lyric Soprano Opera Singer, Ms Abiodun Koya, who rendered the US and Nigerian national anthems, as well as two special songs in her powerful voice. Scholarships were awarded to three deserving lawyers in various stages of their studies or career progression in the United States. The Nigerian Lawyers Association is a not-for-profit, non-partisan professional organisation based in the United States. |
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Court dissolves marriage over religious differences Agency reporter A 19-year-old marriage was on Monday, dissolved by the Abeokuta Grade 11 Customary Court Ake, due to religious differences a man and his wife. The 38-year-old wife, Rhoda Oladipupo, told the court that her husband, Sunday Oladidupo, a 44-year-old driver, wanted her to be a traditional worshipper as against her choice, which according to her, is Christianity. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Rhoda told the court that she was tired of the 19-year- old union, which had produced five children, ages 18, 15, 13, 10 and six. The complainant said each time she went to church, she received beating from Sunday, adding that he maltreated her so often because of their religious differences. She said the situation made her to move out of her matrimonial home six months ago along with three of their children. Rhoda also told the court that she had been living within the premises of her church with the children since then. The woman also alleged that Sunday had come to the church several times to beat her up with little or no resistance. "He comes to the church to beat me until he was threatened that he would be handed over to the police by the church," she said. Rhoda said the situation was frustrating and tiring and "I have no option but to seek dissolution of the union.'' She, thereafter, appealed to the court to dissolve the marriage. Rhoda also wanted the court to mandate Sunday to be responsible for the children's education and upkeep. The estranged couple had appeared in court on October 25, November 8 and November 19 before Monday's final hearing and judgment. The President of the court, Chief Ishola Fajebe, said he was not happy that the husband was not in court to listen to the judgment. Ishola said it was evident that love no longer existed between the couple and that their continuous staying together might lead to a bloodshed. He, therefore, dissolved the marriage. He advised Rhoda to take care of the three children and ordered Sunday to be paying N3, 000 monthly for each of the children's upkeep and education. He said the money must be paid to the Court Registry as from December. 30. He told Rhoda that Sunday must be allowed to see his children whenever he wished. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/23/806.html |
FG names location of six new varsities From Bukola Olatunji in Abuja, 11.22.2010 Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa'i yesterday named Nasarawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Ebonyi, Bayelsa and Ekiti states, representing each of their geo-political zones, as the beneficiaries of the six new universities to be established by the federal government. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/23/225.html Rufai, who addressed newsmen on the creation of the universities said the choice of location in each zone was guided by the principle of equity. "Consideration was given to states without federal universities and the least concentration of other federal tertiary institutions in terms of existing polytechnics and colleges of education. Where the same number of institutions exists, consideration was given to states without their own universities." She further explained that the institutions are conceptually distinct from the current conventional and specialised universities. "They will be programme focused and shall seek to address the peculiar challenges of the zones where they are located." A healthy balance will also be struck "between expenditure on core academic activities on the one hand and overhead on the other, such that they will become cost-effective right from take-off with emphasis on the promotion of teaching, learning and research", the minister further said. Justifying the establishment of the universities, Rufai said, a total of 1, 305, 277 candidates applied for admission into universities nationwide last year out of which only 205, 170 or 16 percent of them were admitted. She also gave the example of Bayero University, Kano, which had a carrying capacity of 5, 000 candidates, but had 39, 000 applicants, who made it their first choice. The six universities are therefore being established "so that as many of our suitably qualified citizens as possible can have access to university-level education and earn the higher qualifications necessary for their own self-development and the training of the high quality manpower needed for our national development and international competitiveness." The minister also seized the opportunity to explain that the federal government has neither abolished the colleges of education, nor was it in the process of doing so. The colleges will continue to produce teachers for the basic level of education and the polytechnics, to train middle-level manpower for the country. According to her, "the federal government is only desirous of upgrading them so that they can also become autonomous degree-awarding institutions as they mature. Already, four federal colleges of education and two polytechnics are awarding degrees by affiliation with federal universities. Overall, 31 federal and state colleges of education and polytechnics have NUC approved affiliations for the award of degrees." |
Brazil seeks Nollywood expertise in film making Showtime People Tuesday, November 23, 2010 By Monsur Olowoopejo Governor Baba-tunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that in the next couple of months the state government, in collaboration with Nollywood, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Brazilian Government to teach Brazilian artistes movie production. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/23/323.html Governor Fashola made this known in Alausa during a courtesy visit by Nollywood actors and actresses under the aegis of Lagos Artistes for Fashola, LAFF, led by Mr. Segun Arinze who are championing the campaign for Fashola's second term in office. His said: "There is an offer on the table from the Brazilian government which the state government is yet to harness. The last time I visited Brazil, the Brazilian Minister for Tourism asked that they will like to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with Nigerians to teach Brazilians on how to produce home videos. "That offer is still on the table and we are yet to harness it because we are yet to have this type of forum where we can work out the necessary modalities. As soon as the artistes are ready, I will re-establish the contact and open up the network." so that whatever benefits comes from the contract, the credit goes to the country and the movie industry." You have helped to address youth restiveness and unemployment." adding that lots of youths had not been harnessed in the area of cinematography. "How many Nigerian universities offer courses in cinematography? I champion this course that Nigerian universities should offer courses in such area. Many of you were probably forced into acting out of necessities." He said: "Maybe you may not pay attention to the values you portray, but I do. Your work is influential and you can use it to promote the image of this country. For instance, our Police are doing well. "Any time you produce movies and you get to a police scene, they are always portrayed as badly dressed, that is the image you are sending out." Speaking earlier, Arinze also commend Fashola. He said: "Governor Fashola had done tremendously well and is an actualiser. And that is the reason why I have gathered my colleagues who have made impact in the movie industry in the state to come together to support your Second term bid. Sunday, November 21, 2010 Secret confession of a satanic wife! Segun Durowaiye I really don't mind if the whole world knows about the evil things I had done that are haunting me at the moment. [img]http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/21/punch/images/pix20101121403862[1].jpg[/img] Secret confession For the lure of filthy lucre or money and its vanities, I had imprisoned my husband with very potent juju and voodoo for 30 years. We were married and I bore him three children who are now adults. "My name is Kofo Farounbi. My husband was a successful banker when we met. He really had money and I enjoyed every bit of the relationship. Somehow, Satan crept into me and gripped my soul and I succumbed to his evil machinations. "With the assistance of my socialite friends, I enveloped and imprisoned my husband with preternatural juju that turned him into a fool, just like a slowpoke. First, he willingly resigned his job and I began treating him like my slave. He would wash my undies, bras and clothes at my order. His family, even his children, often wondered why their dad had become an slowpoke, acting foolishly. "I spent weeks outside my matrimonial home and when I came back, he would welcome me without any fuss. I dated several men in those days, including a prominent business man. I must confess I enjoyed every bit of my bizarre lifestyle. There were times I arrived from my social outings and he would be smelling because he hadn't had his bath for days and I'd order him to go and have his bath. It was that bad! "Suddenly, a couple of years ago, some religious sects with firebrand kind of worship invited him to their prayer session and he became a new born in Almighty God! The juju that had arrested his senses for 30 years vanished and his life changed for the better and he disowned and divorced me. "Now, I'm alone, wallowing in abject poverty and pains induced by bosom cancer. I'm getting thinner and thinner every day. I have spent my entire life savings trying to free myself from this health problem, but it has persisted. The gnawing pains of the terminal disease are killing me gradually. It seems God has meted out judgement to me." A couple of weeks after her confession, Kofo died a painful death caused by the terminal disease. RESPONSE FROM READERS Trapped in the rainstorm Dear Segun, I read your article in SUNDAY PUNCH of September 5, 2010 entitled, 'Trapped in the Rainstorm.' It was good. You're a good writer, but your ending was in a hurry. You were so eager to end your story, which shouldn't be. When Ayo's father left the hospital, confused and walking aimlessly, I knew the story was coming to an end. Your story should keep people on their toes next time. Nice one. Chukwuma, Festac Town, Lagos. 070326809XX. *********************** An Eye for an Eye Hello segun, You're really the King of Suspense, there's no doubt about that and the recent increase in cover price of SUNDAY PUNCH is worth it. 'An eye for an eye' could be said to be jungle justice, but the so-called man of God deserves it, particularly because they think they could inherit the kingdom of God after their irreparable destructions and evil deeds. Please, keep giving us more suspense, which is just like watching video film. Osuolale Ishola-Asanike, 080754892XX. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/21/860.html |
Monday, November 22, 2010 Police arrest three in Lagos for woman's murder Agency reporter The police in Lagos have arrested an 18-year-old secondary school pupil and two others for allegedly killing a woman after having sex with her in a hotel room. Frank Mba http://odili.net/news/source/2010/nov/22/802.html Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Frank Mba, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos that the suspects, aged between 18 and 22, confessed that they were contacted by a native doctor to supply him human organs. He said the fugitive native doctor made the suspects to swear an oath of secrecy at his shrine and allegedly paid them N15,000 out of a total of N60,000 for the human parts. "The suspects approached the woman, believed to be a commercial sex worker, and took her to a hotel in Ikotun area where one of the suspects had sex with her in the presence of the other two suspects. "After the sex session, the woman slept off. The suspects then cut off the woman's neck with a sharp cutlass. "When they were satisfied that she was dead, the suspects cut off her two hands and escaped from the hotel room, leaving the dead body on the bed," Mba said. Mba said that many days after the matter was reported to the police, an employee of the hotel came across the pupil and recognised him as one of the young men who lodged in the hotel on the day of the incident. The suspect was promptly arrested and his confession led to the apprehension of his alleged accomplices. The suspects are being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, pending further investigation. Mba said that command had the native doctor wanted while the suspects would be charged for murder. The police advised hotel operators to monitor the activities of their clients with CCTVs. |
