Permanent Residence

Data published by the UK’s office for national statistics in 2021, shows that a significant number of Nigerians and South Africans have made a move to the UK permanently.

The data – which is based on the country’s annual population survey – shows the number of overseas-born people (by country) who live permanently in the UK as of the end of June 2020.

The survey shows that the country with the largest overseas population is India, with an estimated 847,000 Indian people currently living in the UK.

This is followed by Poland (746,000 people) and Pakistan (519,000 people) who ranked in second and third place respectively.

South Africa is ranked in ninth position, with an estimated 229,000 people currently living in the country, while Nigeria completes the top10 with 219,000 people. According to the list, the two countries represent the largest population of Africans in the UK.
There are more Nigerians in the
UK than the 219,000 quoted here.

There's also a constant leakage
of UK-based Nigerians to Canada and the U.S. for relocation and
work.

Polish high immigration into the
UK still stuns me... grin

South Africa has held an official sod-turning ceremony for the "God’s Window Skywalk" in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Once complete in 2023, the project in the Mpumalanga province will allow visitors to experience one of South Africa’s most iconic vistas in an entirely new way.

Located at the zenith of Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route, God’s Window offers visitors a panoramic view of the lowlands more than 900 metres down into a lush indigenous forest-clad ravine. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Indian Ocean and Maputo - the capital city of neighbouring Mozambique.

The skywalk will be a cantilevered glass walkway suspended off the edge of the cliff to give visitors a 360-degree panoramic view. It will protrude about 12 metres out from the cliff and will be about 5 metres wide.

It is also designed to be a must-see global iconic attraction with a number of activities on-site (the skywalk itself – a sky bridge – a sky swing – a zero-gravity room – a conference and meeting facility). The plan is for a significant part of the activities to be run by local unemployed youths from the area.

The Blyde River region attracts nearly one million visitors annually. This will be the first skywalk of its kind in South Africa and one of a very few to have been built around the world.
That's a HUGE one!

I look forward to visiting the glass
skywalk on completion in 2023.

Here's an unseen throwback photo of Super Eagles legend, Jay Jay Okocha carrying his baby nephew Alex Iwobi as his father, Chuba Iwobi smiles heartily. The Arsenal forward, Iwobi, once admitted in an interview that he experienced very difficult times in the past and his uncle, former Super Eagles skipper Austin Okocha, helped him to find his feet.

Iwobi was quoted as saying to Soccer Laduma;

‘’Growing up as a kid, there were times when I thought I was going to get released.’‘’But my mum and dad were always there to help. I have had some difficult times and, without my family and my uncle (Austin Okocha), I wouldn’t be where I am today.‘’Considering the difficult path that I have had, my Arsenal career has been amazing. I’m on a good way. However, I’m still young and I have got a long way to go.’’

BusinessRe: Wave, Francophone Africa’s First Unicorn Startup With A 1% Money Transfer Fee by AlphaCEO: 11:45pm On Sep 18, 2021
BigCabal:
Source: https://techcabal.com/2021/09/07/how-wave-became-francophone-africas-first-unicorn-startup/

Read more stories about fintech startups in Africa here: https://techcabal.com/category/fintech/

Within four years, Wave has gone from a spinoff from Asia and Africa-focused cheap remittance company, Sendwave, to a mobile money service provider worth $1.7 billion; the latest unicorn startup in Africa and the first in the French-speaking region.

The billion-dollar valuation comes after it raised $200 million in a Series A round led by payments giant Stripe; Sequoia Heritage, a private investment fund and unit of Sequoia; Founders Fund; and Ribbit Capital, with participation from other existing investors.

No other startup operating in Africa has raised as much in a Series A. OPay’s recent $400 million raise is the region’s largest venture round, followed by Interswitch’s $200 million investment from Visa and Flutterwave’s $170 million fundraise. All were Series C rounds.

Taking on incumbents

Senegal is one of Africa’s fastest-growing mobile money markets, according to a 2020 GSMA report.

In 2015, the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), the common central bank of eight French-speaking countries in the region (including Senegal), allowed nonbanks to operate mobile money in its member states. Mobile money adoption has expanded since then, driven by early telecom entrants that had the requisite infrastructure and user base (mobile networks and subscribers) to establish the service.

Orange is Senegal’s largest mobile operator and controls around 50% of the telecom market share with nearly 8 million mobile users, twice as many as runner-up Free, which has 4.4 million subscribers. Expresso Telecom, a unit of the UAE’s Expresso Telecom Group Limited, holds 22% of the market share, with over 3 million subscribers.

All three telecom firms provide mobile money services under the Orange Money, Free Money, and E-Money brands respectively, and along with banks, dominate the digital financial services space. Other third-party providers like fintech have had to make do with small market shares while competing with incumbents.

But Wave, a product created by two Americans (Drew Durbin and Lincoln Quirk) to lower the cost of mobile money transactions, piloted in 2016 and officially launched in Senegal a year later, entered the market with a 70% cheaper service.

Wave offers free deposits and withdrawals via its mobile application and applies a fixed transaction fee of just 1% for money transfers between individuals. Unlike its competitors, Wave passes additional fees on bill payments from users on to businesses. For users without a smartphone, it provides a free QR-card to transact with agents, who are able to open accounts, receive deposits, and execute withdrawals.

According to co-founder Drew Durbin, Wave is building a mobile money service that is “radically affordable”. The startup has had to build its own infrastructure, including agent and consumer applications, an agent network, and QR cards in order to provide its super cheap service.

The startup’s low-cost transaction service has helped it take on incumbents, eat into their market share, and turn the entire mobile money industry on its head.

Wave’s strategy has managed to shake Orange in particular. To match the ultra-competitive offer that the startup has operated with since May 2020, the telecoms company was forced to lower its prices as well, bringing down bill payment fees to 1% from June 1.

Pressure on the network operator also saw it stop users in Senegal from purchasing Orange airtime via Wave’s mobile application, a move that’s been described as anti-competitive by the fintech company and resulted in a dispute currently in the hands of the country’s telecoms regulator.

Wave’s branch in Dakar – which is led by IT veteran Coura Sène – claims to be the largest mobile money player in Senegal with over half of the country’s adults, between four and five million people, making up its several million monthly active users. The Wave app has more than 5 million downloads on Google PlayStore. As reported by TechCrunch, the startup processes billions of dollars in annual volume and has partnerships with UBA and Ecobank for its Senegal operations.

Having previously raised just $13.8 million since its creation, Wave was able to attract the landmark Series A funding from investors to expand its disruptive business model, which has seen it become one of the most-used mobile money services in Senegal and achieved unicorn status – startups valued at or above $1 billion – as a fintech in Africa.

Other African unicorns include fintech startups OPay, Flutterwave, Interswitch, Fawry as well as e-commerce giant Jumia.

With the fresh investment, Wave plans to deepen its presence in Senegal and Ivory Coast, a country it expanded into recently and is currently running communication campaigns to raise awareness. The startup also intends to grow its 800-man team across product, engineering, and business, as well as expand into other markets it considers regulatory-friendly, like Uganda and Mali.
A disruptive business model.

I agree with you...most times the signs are there. Just that many men are blinded by a non-existing love. A woman that will divorce you after just one month in marriage will actually have displayed such glaring signs but most men foolishly choose to ignore them.

I learnt one bitter truth in relationships. Who isn't yours isn't yours, never force anyone to love you.

Never endure anyone who's character isn't compatible with you because you love them, it will end in premium tears because people don't change they only get worse.

Never invest heavily on a partner to win her heart, your investment will earn you her body but not her heart.

Never go into conflict with your parents or siblings because of a partner. You'll be on your knees begging when your relationship goes south. (This one applies to females as well)

Never try to change or rebrand a partner, you'll end up getting frustrated. Go for the one that exhibits the characteristics of what you want and date her.

Never fall in love with a girl you love, rather fall in love with a girl who loves you. When you fall in love with a girl you love, if she doesn't feel the same way, you'll spend all your time in that relationships trying to gain her affection. She will torture you emotionally, drain you financially, manipulate you into doing things for her against your wish... etc. But when a girl geninuely loves you, she'll go any length and give anything just to be with you. Flee from home, borrow, make sacrifices...just to make you happy.

Finally, men should be wise, flying your spouse abroad isn't bad, but make sure she has earned your loyalty, trust and love.

There are Exporters who succeed without any form of training but purely learning from their trials and errors. But a very few have successful transactions based purely on luck.
While trials and errors can be a way to learn the rope, very few make it far because when they fail once or twice, they very likely lost all their investments and are already in debt to their creditors. As for those who succeed, they are usually less than 10% of the pack because they still have more money to try other transactions.
If you plan to venture into Export business, it's crucial that the first thing you do is to learn everything you can about International trade because about many Exporters lose their investments on their first trial, and losing all you have all at once could be the end of your finances in the short term.
In an industry where you could make so much money or lose, you must never act on just assumption. Hope is not a strategy.

nairafame:
Three British soldiers on Covid-19 testing duty have gotten themselves into trouble for posing naked on a Red Arrow jet next to a memorial to two dead airmen.

The Red Arrows jet is parked next to a plaque marking the deaths of Flight Lieutenants Jon Egging and Sean Cunningham, who died in separate accidents in 2011.

Colour Sergeant 'Tats' Taylor, posted X-rated pictures on Facebook of himself with Corporal Shane Woods and Private Anthony Panton posing on a Red Arrows jet after a boozy party.

The 49-year-old captioned the images: 'Think we took over RAF Scampton' and a laughing emoji.

The trio had spent ten days carrying out Covid-19 checks in the Lincolnshire community.

Senior figures are said to be furious with the pictures which were taken on Friday, at the historic home of The Dambusters after a boozy party, The Sun reports.

A source told The Sun: “The soldiers were naked except for their regimental headdress.

"It brings the army into disrepute and the battalion as well. It’s so disrespectful.
“Tats put the pictures up on Facebook but took them down after, but it was too late, everyone had seen them. They know they’re in the s***.”

It is claimed the three soldiers had been given alcohol as a token of appreciation by the local council after spending 10 days at the mobile Covid-19 testing site at the Lincolnshire base.

An Army spokesman said: “This behaviour clearly contradicts the discipline we ask personnel to display. We will deal with the matter accordingly.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Life Lessons Learnt From Playing Chess by AlphaCEO: 8:33am On Sep 18, 2021
ILoveChess:
Started playing Chess some 7years ago and I can say its the game I love most in my life.

Unfortunately I don't get to play it often, no one to play. And I don't like online game, to me its not real, as players are sometimes allowed to undo moves.

So many lessons I've learnt from playing this beautiful game and I'll like ti share some. The game is reflective of what's happening in our everyday life and at times coincides with people's current situation.

Now I'm going to share the lessons 'piece by piece'

1 The Pawn; The pawn is the smallest piece on the board, regarded as the weakest or lowest ranking officer. Its usually thrown to the floor first, left to face the incoming danger and attack. Simply put, they are the first expected to die and not see out the game. But any pawn that's strifes to reach the end of the opponent's board becomes as powerful as the most powerful piece of the game.

Lesson; No matter what u face, no matter the castigation, no matter the humiliation, no matter the reproach. Even if u were left to suffer or to die by people Who are meant to help u, don't give up. Continue to strife, once u endure till the end, u wil be victorious at last.

2 The Castle/Rook; The castle or rook is the wall of the kingdom on both ends. They protect the territory and the senior officers. Once the rook is lost, the kingdom becomes more vulnerable and a checkmate will be easier, your King/president might become easy to capture.

Lesson; Don't allow your protection to be compromised, don't make yourself vulnerable by losing your stronghold. When u face attacks, physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually, hold on to whatever makes u strong and invincible.

3 The Knight; Apart from being my most loved piece in the game, its one of the most interesting and not easily predictable. The knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. The knight is also the only piece that has an irregular pattern of movement by taking the 'L' shape route, making it easy to miss, making it unpredictable and if you're nit vigilant enough, u won't know when the knight will capture your King, from afar. Yes, the only piece that can also target, launch and attack and kill an opponent from a distance.

Lesson; don't make yourself predictable, surprise people with your steps and moves. Tackle problems from afar before they come closer to u. Be a knight, shock people with your doings, let them marvel at the way u do your things.

4 The Bishop; I don't know why but I see these guys as peacemakers lol. They are the closest piece to the highest ranking officers, on both sides. I perceive they are always advicing the King and queen on what step to take jn difficult times.

Lesson; always try and have someone, preferably an elder, Who can give u advice in difficult times, Who can help u not to go wrong in whatever u do.

5 The Queen; The power drunk woman. She thinks, many people think she's the most powerful just because she can do anyhow, take anystep in any direction to any length at a time. Always bullying others, but at times, she takes the wrong step and gets captured. Power sweet o, but it can ruin.

Lesson; no matter how rich or powerful u think u are, u can always fall prey if u took the wrong steps or stepped on the wrong feet. Be careful how u use your power or position.

6 The King/President; The most gentle, the most reserved, the most sensible. The father of the house, the King of d kingdom. The whole game centres around him, he's always reserved and respectful in his doing. Unlike the queen, he takes a step at a time albeit in any direction. When things are getting tough, he goes out of his walls(castle) to join the war, thereby protecting his kingdom, that's the move called 'CASTLING'. Everyone in the kingdom is fighting to protect their King, because once he's captured, the game ends.

Leason; Act like a King, think before u move, take a step at a time, dont bite more than u can chew. When things are going tough around u, do 'CASTLING', go out.og your way to protect the people u love. Don't worry, u might not know, but those people love you too and are fighting to protect u, ur kingdom and ur home.

Like if u love the game of Chess.

Parisian:
In this thread I'll be posting some pictures of PH which are in contrast with what we've been seeing here. In the past few days, we've been inundated with "gory" images of ph here on this forum with some people thinking those pictures represent the entirety of the city.

So, in this thread, you'll be seeing the other side of the city.
Awesome sights!
