Autchhomme: Treasury Bills (TBills) are government money instruments, meaning how the government can generate money from the citizens apart from taxation. This is simply a form of loan from the citizens to the government. Any citizen (18+) can have TBills (ie lend to the government) and earn a published interest depending on the amount (the least is 100k) and period of investment (tenure). If one wants to purchase (invest) Tbills, you need to visit your bank where you will be notified of the available tenure and their corresponding rates. For example, you want to book 100k @ interest rate of 12% for 60days, then your bank will book (buy/fix) it from your account (new or existing). For this the interest amount will be (18k or thereabout) using Simple Interest formula. This interest is paid upfront (ie once it is booked, before the tenure starts counting) into your account by deducting and fixing 82k from your account and leaving the balance of 18k, which you can withdraw and flex with . On maturity, the total of 100k is paid into your account after the 60days tenure expires. For documentation purposes, you need your passport photo (add recent as usual ) and id card, then your bank will give you Investment Advice (or Note/Certificate). Its advantage over fixed deposit is that 1) your payment of interest is assured and upfront, 2) it does not disappear in case the bank folds, as it is a government obligation, 3) you can start with as low as 100k 4) the interest is usually higher than fixed deposit. Any other thing, , well any commercial bank can handle it.
lexyinfo: Ecommerce is a business you should look into in 2021 and beyond because is very profitable and anyone can do it even with little or no experience once you are ready to follow simple instructions.
Currently, the e-commerce market in Nigeria is worth $13 billion; according to a report by London Based Economist Intelligence Unit [EIU].
Experts in the Nigeria financial service sector have estimated that Nigeria's e-commerce market value could rise to $50 billion [N15.45 trillion] over the next 10 years
Recently, the National Bureau of Statistics [NBS] predicted that the e-commerce sector is expected to contribute about 10 percent of a projected N10 trillion to the Nation's Gross Domestic Product [GDP].
With the increasing penetration of the internet in Nigeria and across Africa; this is a huge market and the sales volume is bound to continue progressing in the coming years. There is something for everyone in this industry which can never get saturated.
You can now see that this is a profitable industry to dive into.
Away from that, we all know the usual way to get started is to go to a website like Aliexpress,1688, Alibaba and a host of others import our desire products but this system has a lot of hurdles for some people especially a newbie.
But what if there is a method that eliminates that first hurdles and you get started without any initial capital hope you will like this kind of business model
Introducing ...
LOCAL ARBITRAGE SYSTEM + DROPSHIPPING BUSINESS MODEL
Let's start with the first one:
LOCAL ARBITRAGE SYSTEM ======================= Here we will source for the product locally from wholesalers, we have them plenty on jiji and some other ones which I will reveal to you later on.
With this system, you don't have to import anything but you will still profit big. Our end goal is to ensure a profit of N5,000 on each item
We will be looking for hot selling products that are selling for N1,500 or less than N2,000 that will sell on online at N12,000 or more.
This smart system doesn't require you to get a shop, store, office or require any huge overhead cost and it has the potential of a fast and crazy profit margin.
You will agree with me that up to this point we have not to spend any money except for the data we are using to make research.
Let's continue...
After you have found the product you want to sell
head over to Facebook and run test ads to see if people will be interested in what you are selling immediately you get an order, go to the seller and buy from him or her and deliver your order and boom.
Let say you get a hair growth oil for N1,500 you can resell for just N10,000 and still pocket N5,000 pure profit after all expenses deducted.
Assuming you are able to sell just 10pcs in a week with 5k profits that's 50k. It is doable. Get up and get the shit done.
You can do this. Is all about mindset and a positive attitude.
I have achieved great results with this system.
The simple truth is to buy low and sell high and build a powerful sales system around it.
You can make it a side hustle or make it a full-time business but whichever path you thread success is yours, once you are able to follow simple instructions.
This extra income source does not affect your day job if you have one already. Though, this business comes with its own challenges but I think 30k to 50k per week and an extra 120 to 200k per month respectively is something to give very good attention to.
Here is how its works -Go online to source good products on or any wholesalers around you -Run a test ad on Facebook and Instagram to test for market acceptability -Buy the products and diver your orders -Smile to the bank and scale up.
You might be thinking of: -how to source for this hot product, -sellers verification, -getting sales, -delivering orders -and finally getting paid

[quote author=jaybenugo post=98954611]Big Brother Naija reality star, Neo Akpofure took to Twitter to rejoice after he travelled out of Nigeria for the first time, IgbereTV reports.
Iiema: Today, financial rigor and strategic insight must be tightly linked, since strategic financial leadership is in high demand. Increasingly, CFOs are being called upon not only to drive cost efficiencies but also to identify profitable sources of revenue growth. They work closely with CEOs to creatively design future growth opportunities. Successful CFO leadership requires a deeper understanding of strategy, increased leadership skills, and an ability to effectively communicate financial acumen and knowledge to nonfinancial colleagues. In The CFO: Master Certificate in Enterprise Strategies and Leadership, you will not only learn and adopt those critical skills, but also use them to elevate your leadership role. In the end you will obtain a master certificate in enterprise strategies and leadership.
Who Should Attend?
The CFO: Master Certificate in Enterprise Strategies and Leadership is a one-week intensive program designed for Financial Managers, Directors and Executives responsible for developing and implementing the strategy as part of their leadership roles. Participants may include chief financial officers, vice presidents, managing directors, GM Finance, controllers, and other senior financial executives with strategic and financial responsibilities.
Participants in this program are a diverse group of finance leaders from varied industries, backgrounds, and geographies who share their biggest challenges with the class. Faculty tailor the program content to address these issues, so participants enjoy a learning experience that truly resonates with them and meets their learning needs.
Participants leave the program with an expanded peer network, plus specific tools and frameworks they can use to make a meaningful strategic impact within their companies or organizations.
The Key Learning Outcomes and Benefits
In The CFO: Enterprise Strategies and Leadership, you will:
• Expand your leadership skills and increase your capacity as a trusted advisor • Develop more effective operational strategies for building value in and managing operational risk throughout your organization • Manage risk and uncertainty • Leverage a suite of tools to identify and drive profitable sources of revenue growth • Think creatively and design opportunities to position your company for the future • Enhance your strategic thinking skills outside traditional areas such as accounting and finance • Bolster your leadership skills to better communicate with nonfinancial colleagues • Be a better decision-maker who can assess disparate data from many areas of your company and help the CEO, board, and other leaders create a long-term path forward
Keynote Experience & Impact
Increasingly, CFOs are expected to be more strategic decision-makers in the business, as noted by the growing trend of promoting chief financial officers to the CEO role, which has occurred in recent years at companies like UPS, PepsiCo, and Siemens AG in recent years. The program elevates the CFO role to one of a “value integrator,” a term coined by IBM in its Global CEO Study to describe the best-performing CFOs. These leaders excel at taking highly unstructured and somewhat ambiguous situations and putting structure around them by integrating information from numerous internal sources. You will enhance your ability to forecast, measure, and monitor business performance; manage risk; and generate predictive insights.
IEMA faculty apply their field-based research and the latest strategic insights to help you broaden your perspective on how to make your organization more competitive.
The program offers a strategic toolbox to help you be a better advisor and decision-maker for your company. IEMA creates a live lab where you and your peers, also seasoned CFOs, learn from real-life case examples and apply frameworks to different situations that go beyond the profit and loss statement — enabling you to drive strategic investments for the future. You will leave the program better equipped to handle internal and external pressures, including the growing role of activist shareholders.
In sum, this program enables you to focus more externally on the fast-paced changes that are redefining your business and be viewed as a key member of the executive leadership team.
Session topics include:
• Link Between Corporate Strategy and Value Creation * Driving Organic Growth * Measuring Performance • Critical Thinking • Creating and Sustaining Competitive Advantage • Strategy Audit and Connected Strategy • Managing Flexibility Using Real Options • Strategic Persuasion • Designing the Corporate Portfolio • Leveraging digital transformation in strategic financial operations
Delivery Methodology
Through highly interactive lectures, exercises, and case studies, both in the classroom and in smaller workgroups, this deep dive into strategy will examine how CFOs have created a competitive advantage in a global context.
About the Facilitator –
Our facilitator is a highly experienced business leader, a retired managing director of one the oil and gas companies in Nigeria, the group CFO of a Nigeria conglomerate, a fellow of the institute of chartered accountants of Nigeria and accomplished entrepreneur, financial advisor, a business coach and a business turn around expert. It will be an opportunity to tap from his wealth of experience especially in today’s increasingly dynamic business environment.
I am opening this thread to raise awareness of the business opportunity that's currently available on Amazon - specifically how to make money online with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
I’ve been a self-publisher for over 3 years now and I can honestly say it is one of the easiest ways to make money online - especially as a beginner. It will not make you rich overnight but IT CAN MAKE YOU RICH. I've been Self Publishing for a little over 3 years now and I've made over N60 million from it (see proof below)
Prior to doing this, I was working a 9-to-5 job. I was earning a good amount of money but I had no freedom. I searched for ways to make money online and came across two books: The Richest Man In Babylon and Rich Dad Poor Dad.
Reading these books planted a very powerful seed in my mind about the need to build passive income. It made me realize that I would never be free working for someone - I needed to build assets that could do the work for me.
The assets that were immediately obvious to me then were Real Estate. However, I didn't have enough capital as at then so I kept on researching until I came across Kindle Publishing. The idea of having a digital asset on Amazon that keeps earning royalty in perpetuity for me was fascinating
I love this business model because it is very passive. Once your books are written (by you or a ghostwriter you hire), you do not have to do anything again. Amazon will publish it, market it and send you your monthly payments for life.
What's more? Kindle publishing is completely legal, you will use your real names (or a pen name if you wish), no changing of IP address and your money will be sent to you here in Nigeria.
I started this business with $500 from my savings and gradually grew it to the scale it is now. It took me 7 months to have my first $1000 month and since then I've made $10,000 multiple months, having worked with a mentor who helped me scale to more than 40 books.
If you are ready to do the work and get good books into the KDP system, the rewards are truly tremendous. I sleep and wake up to check the number of people that have bought my books in countries I have never been to.
Imagine.. - Earning money from books you wrote years ago - Not having to rely on pension or money from relatives for your survival -earning in dollars and spending in naira (the added appreciation in value!) - Buying a car or building the house of your dream (without taking a mortgage from a bank) - Contributing to a charity of your choosing or starting a foundation to help the poor - Quitting your job, living life on your own terms and travelling the world (and still tracking the progress of your business on your laptop)
All these (and more), you can achieve with the power of publishing
THE BASICS OF KINDLE DIRECT PUBLISHING
Step 1. Register
- Go over to kdp.amazon.com and open an account. This first step is necessary so you can commit yourself to the project.
- Use an email that you open frequently because they will communicate with you.
- Use your real names, real Nigerian address and other relevant details.
- If you're doing this from Nigeria then you'll need a US bank account to receive payment from Amazon. (Amazon doesn't pay directly into Nigerian Bank accounts). You can get a free US Bank account from Payoneer by going here
- Amazon deposits your royalty into your Payoneer account. You can then withdraw the money from your payonner account to your Nigerian Bank account
Step 2. Research
- Research is one of the crucial aspects of success with Kindle Direct Publishing. You need to do accurate research to figure out which keywords are profitable with good demand. This can be seen in the books best sellers rank (BSR). Ever book on Amazon has this. The lower the number the better! - Once you confirm books in that keyword are selling well, you move to step 3.
Step 3. Write Or Outsource The Content
- Get materials and write quality content for your books. The content must be original or your book will not be published.
- If you don't want to write the book yourself, you can hire writers from Fiverr or Upwork (https://www.upwork.com). Just make sure that the writers you hire are legitimate. Some writers on upwork/fiverr sell you manuscript they wrote for other people, these sort of things can get you in trouble with Amazon
- To help you detect unscrupulous sellers, look at their reviews and profile history. If they have good, relevant and recent reviews from customers saying they did a good job for them thats a good start.
- Looking at their profile history, have they been around for a long time? if so, then thats another good sign (just use your judgement, unscrupulous sellers frequently get their accounts terminated so the longer a seller has been around the more likely he/she is legit)
- You can also contract writing companies to write for you (this option is slightly more expensive but has less hassle and gets you higher quality books). I share the company I personally use with my students.
- Once you have the manuscript, check that it doesn't violate any copyrights (that the writer didn't just copy and paste everything from google). You can use the Copyscape for this (http://www.copyscape.com)
- Also, ensure you proofread properly. Kindle readers will kill you with bad reviews if there are a lot of errors/typos.
Step 4. Design A Cover
- Just check other books in the category you chose and make a similar cover. You can get good covers made for you for as little as $5 on Fiverr.com. You can also design the cover yourself. I share with my students the FREE software I use to design my kindle and paperback covers..I rarely outsource those out these days. If you're the creative type, then $5 saved over numerous books adds up!
Step 5. Format The Book Properly
Formatting is another aspect that can easily mar your work. In fact, some people are offering this service online and they are making a lot of money from it. You need to know the right way to format so the book will work well on different types of mobile devices apart from the Kindle Reader. (hint: you need to learn how to optimize this to maximize your royalties)
Step 6. Write A Good Description
This is self-explanatory. Your description could be two or three paragraphs or more. This is what will represent your sales page so you need to do it well. You need to communicate to the customer why they need to purchase your book and not those of your competitors. This is key. Get it right and you'll sell a LOT of books. (hint - you need to hit customers pain points, you need to overcome objections, you need to emphasize the benefits they'll derive from buying your book etc.)
Step 7. Upload Your Book To KDP
Once your manuscript and book cover is uploaded, you can input your book description, set the price of your book and hit the "publish" button. Your book will then enter a review process where amazon will check to see if it meets their standards (i.e. it doesn't violate any copyright etc.). This process usually takes between 12-72 hours. If it passes the review process, viola your book is now on sale on amazon and you can begin to earn royalties for each unit that sell.
I believe the above information will be enough to get you started
PROOF OF MY EARNINGS
Why qualifies me to speak authoritatively on this subject matter?
Well, I have attached below screenshots showing my earnings from kindle and paperback sales since I started in November 2016.
They show that I've made more than $110,000 (from ebook, paperback and page reads). In addition, I've also made more than $54,000 from audiobook royalties alone (have sold more than 18,100 audiobooks with each audiobook earning more than $3 on average), as well as, more than $4000 from Ingramspark (which I started earlier this year in August 2019)
Feel free to go through this thread to see a lot more consistent screenshots showing my earnings. I usually post them on a month by month basis
I'm not saying this to brag but rather to show what's possible. Some people still find it hard to believe it's possible to LEGITIMATELY make money online!

With this book, all you have to do is draw a book outline (using the strategy outlined in the blueprint), give the outline to your ghostwriter and the ghostwriter will get to work writing the book for you. Once the book returns you pay for it to be formatted, pay freelancers to create a book cover for you, upload everything on your kdp account and hit the publish button. It's that simple.

Beancounter94: Very easy..oil was at $91-130 during his regime...MEANING...more revenue...more money to pay subsides, and to subsidise fuel that low.
Besides, paying the subsidy was problematic...in two ways
1.It ate up a lot of our forex savings...and left a lot of unpaid claims which took Buhari till 2018 to finally pay off 2.It also made no impact...by 2013, most parts of the country were paying above N100 for fuel.(exept at NNPC stations and major marketers...which meant queuing for hours before you got fuel. I used to queue at an NNPC station for 9 hours back in 2014 to buy fuel at N97. Meanhwile at independent marketers on the outskirts of the same city, fuel cost N100-N130...NO QUEUE) 3.NNPC was making no profit and thus no money to fix or upgrade refinereis.
Now Bubu has had oil prices below $80 since 2015...so either prices for fuel go up...or he takes a heavy loan to pay more subsides...or he raise taxes. seriously, subsides are a drain on the economy. Remember GEJ wanted to remove them , and he had good reasons to do so.
Let's not forget the cops that were deployed to raid APC HQ, and the cops that fired teargass in the National Assembly, among other things....
Maybe not him, but his supporters routinely labelled everyone who opposed them...terrorists....espeically on this site. There is a reason why large areas of the North voted for Buhari....
High oil prices=high forex levels=high value of the naira=lower prices for everything.
Plus before GEJ, that bag of rice used to cost less than N5000.
Buhari IS also building universities up and down...at the expense of our very limited educaiton budget...and at the end of the day, the schools don't get properly funded.(Most of the new universites are poorly funded and a mess.)
High oil prices=high revenue.
High oil prices=higher value of the naira. Besides, naira was falling to N216 by the end of his regime. Falling oil prices.
High oil prices=high forex revenues. We were no 1too between 1973-82, when oil was so high, that Arabs were doing weekly shopping in the UK.
Every oil producing country has periods of boom and bust.Between 1982-2006, we were in prolonged recession due to low oil prices.
Ebola is an old disease. By the time it came to Nigeria, there was over 40 years worth of knowledge on how to deal with it without closing down schools and churches, and mosques, etc. Plus., it affected about 200 people max, of whom a minority came down with the disease.
Covid is a new disease, we don't even know how it works, or why some people die, and some live, and it spreads by aerosol. (Ebola does not; you have to be in very close contact with an ebola patient before you come down with it.)
Far more people have died of covid in this country, than of ebola.
Then during the covid crisis, oil crashed to $24 per barrel...meaning our revenue was basically non-existent for most of that time. Either we took loans again, or government taxed everyone half their salaries.
And we got foreign help. A team of Ugandan experts visited our country to give us some much needed expertise. (Uganda has decades of knowledge and experience in the field.)
Answer given
And before you start....Buhari needs to answer why he has not diversified our economy, and why banditry is rampant across the country, and why we have no answer to the perineal herdsmen crisis.

SIRTee15: Air Canada passenger says she was forced to organize her own escape from an empty plane in Toronto after flight crews left her asleep in her seat.
Tiffani Adams said the incident, documented in detail on Air Canada’s Facebook page and currently under review by the airline, took place on a June 9 flight from Quebec City to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
After finding herself in an empty row, Adams said she laid down to sleep less than halfway into the short 90-minute flight. When she woke up, she said she was completely alone in the pitch-black aircraft.
“I wake up around midnight, few hours after [the] flight landed, freezing cold still strapped in my seat in complete darkness,” Adams recalled in the post.
“I attempt to charge my phone by plugging into every USB port I could find—no luck because when they shut the aircraft down there is no power whatsoever… since I can’t charge my phone to call for help I’m full on panicking because I want off this nightmare ASAP.”
Adams said she then made her way to the cockpit, where she attempted to use a radio to call for help, but couldn’t use the plane’s radio without power. She said she eventually found a flashlight and began signaling out of the plane’s windows, hoping to attract attention.
At the same time, she said she found a way to open the plane’s door – but had no way to get down.
“Now I’m facing a 40-50ft drop to the pavement below... I search frantically for a rope so I can climb down to safely. [The] flight attendants seat is right by the door I opened, but the seatbelt is too short to hang from, so back to my distress signals."
Adams, who said the plane was parked far away from the airport terminal, eventually attracted the attention of a baggage attendant who brought a ladder truck to the plane to rescue her.
“He is in shock asking how the heck they left me on the plane,” she wrote.
“I’m wondering the same… when my seat an inch back or my tray [is] down flight crew take notice, but yet you missed a person still strapped into her seat and just all go on home?”
In a statement to CTVNews.ca, an Air Canada spokesperson declined to share any additional details but said the airline is reviewing the incident.
Adams said she was immediately approached by an Air Canada representative on the ground who offered to get her a limo or hotel room. She declined, stating that she just wanted to go home.
A spokesperson said the airline remains in contact with Adams, who said she is still struggling to sleep.
“I haven’t got much sleep since the reoccurring night terrors and waking up anxious and afraid I’m alone locked up someplace dark,” she wrote.
LiftedMan: “I think I’m having a bad dream,” she recounted in a Facebook post. “When my seat an inch back or my tray down flight crew take notice but yet you missed a person still strapped into her seat and just all go on home?!?!”
Adams described the harrowing experience in which she was unable to recharge her phone while stuck inside the parked aircraft, which sent her into a panic attack.
Left to grope around the plane for some way to alert someone she was still on board, Adams eventually found a flashlight in the cockpit, and opened one of the plane’s doors. Hanging 40 or 50 feet above the pavement, she flashed the light at distant ground crews until someone driving a luggage truck saw her and came to the rescue.
Air Canada officials gave her a ride home and have been in contact with her since, but Adams is still recovering from the ordeal.
travelwaka: I have always done more of the Nigerian resorts, this is because I believe so much in the Nigerian tourism. So this is my first review of a resort outside Nigeria. The plan is to visit as many countries as I can In my life time.
Casa Del papa is one of the best resorts in Benin republic. The beautiful resort has been in existence for over 15 years. It has both the lagoon and the sea view making it a perfect destination for holiday, vacation and honeymoon. Casa Del Papa is located in the colonial city of Ouidah. A few minutes drive from the Benin slave route. The resort boasts of a restaurant, outdoor pool, bar, spa, lagoon, beach, and other exciting attractions.
This resort is one of the best in Benin Republic. This is where most of the foreign expatriate hang out. You'd almost think you are in France bonjour bonjour everywhere
travelwaka: Things You Should Know Before Visiting Casa Del Papa
Convert Naira to Cefa: Please ensure you convert your money to Cefa at the border before coming to the resort, they do not accept other currency.
Get a Universal Adapter:
Get a new SIM: Get a Benin MTN SIM for internet connection and calls. There is no internet access or WIFI in the resort rooms.
Roaming is crazily expensive: If you use Airtel or MTN it automatically roams, every call you receive, you will be charged almost 200 naira per minute
Get a Translator: The official language is French, going with someone that speaks French is an added advantage. You may also make use of google translator or other translating devices. This will make communication easy.
Note the food schedule: The resort has a strict timing for food. Come out for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the right time, these guys are so strict with their timing. If you miss any of the schedules, you may have to wait for the next one.
Looks cool. Quidah leaves a sour taste in the mouth though because of the infamous Atlantic slave trade.

After burning for 56 minutes, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 AM. 29 minutes later, the North Tower collapsed. The attacks on the World Trade Center killed 2,753 people(less than 2hrs). Lets never forget, In memory of all Victms.
22-23. Some trapped people in the building had no choice but to jump over 90 floors to escape the intense heat and the thick suffocating smoke of the burning building. Some jumped in ones, some jumped in groups, and some jumped holding each other's hand.
24. The towers collapsing to dust WTC, 9/11 Attack.
I'll never forget these events that happened live on TV in 2001. Surreal!
egopersonified: Like the topic says, what has the lockdown made you see in a different way or made you realise about yourself, family, friends, work, business, etc.?
For me, I wish I had bought all those hard copy books and board games I have being meaning to get back to, like scrables and checkers and learning how to play chess. Right now, even ludo would be heavenly. I am tired of browsing and reading ebooks all day.
Found out my first child can cook soup and jollof rice without any form of assistance, I always thought they only knew how to fry egg, cook indomie and make eba.
In business, the take out guys( suya, shawarma joints, pizza spots) are making more money now. Most sit in businesses(restaurants, hotels, eateries) are closed.
Please add yours.
Awesome insights!
As an avid reader, I read a lot of business management and financial education books that I already had in my personal home library (some I bought but hadn't read until the lockdown), and listened to podcasts... and audio books dealing with a lot of diverse subjects.
YouTube was also a good resource and I learned a lot from there.
marieolae: For those who don't know the meaning of "catifished", it is a slang term for being deceived. In our generation today, a lot of people tend to use filters, photoshop and specific angles to beautify their pictures. But this has gotten to a whole new level. Instagram, facebook, twitter have become the foundation of catfishes. They deceive people online, creating an image of what they are not. The question is...have you ever hooked up with a guy/girl that totally disappointed you? Share your stories. Here are some of the catfishiest girls on the internet
footyhighlight: From excess digits to errant hands, extreme hairiness to disappearing joysticks, there is no end of strange ailments afflicting humanity. Some are serious, others are downright bizarre. Here are some fascinating, odd and mercifully rare conditions that can affect our bodies and brains. Also, as it turns out, there's a medical condition for all those Naija babes who speak our Nigerian language with foreign accent.
1) ALIEN HAND SYNDROME A condition arising from brain trauma. This bizarre syndrome involves losing control of one hand, which can do anything from gesticulating to unbuttoning clothes its owner is trying to put on with his or her other hand. The condition is also called Dr Strangelove Syndrome. While victims can still experience sensation in the affected hand, they say it seems to have a mind of its own. The only solution is to keep it busy, for example by holding onto something - just not, hopefully, your own throat.
2) PROTEUS SYNDROME Named after Proteus, the Greek god famous for changing his shape, this is a progressive disorder causing disfiguring tumours and abnormal bone development. It's extremely rare, with just over 100 cases confirmed since it was first identified in 1979. Its most celebrated victim was Joseph Merrick, aka "The Elephant Man". At first, Merrick was believed to have suffered from the nerve disorder neurofibromatosis, but in 2003 DNA testing on his remains showed that he in fact had Proteus Syndrome. His story inspired the 1980 film The Elephant Man, starring John Hurt as Merrick.
3) ONDINE'S CURSE A wonderful name for a nasty problem, this is a sleep disorder resulting from a malfunctioning autonomic nervous system. Its victims are unable to breathe spontaneously but must consciously will each breath, so will suffocate if they fall asleep. Respirators may help. Also known as congenital central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome, Ondine's Curse derives its name from the legend of a water nymph, Ondine, who fell in love with a human, thereby forfeiting her immortality. Though he had pledged his undying love, Ondine discovered him snoring in the arms of another woman. She cursed him, declaring that as he had pledged his love with every waking breath, he would die the moment he fell asleep.
4) RILEY-DAY SYNDROME Feeling no pain; it doesn't sound like a problem, but it can be lethal for the victims of a syndrome involving, among other symptoms, insensitivity to pain. Caused by a chromosomal abnormality found among Ashkenazi Jews - people of Eastern European Jewish descent - the syndrome makes its victims exceptionally accident-prone because they simply don't register warning signs of tissue damage such as wounds, bruising and burns. They are even oblivious to oxygen deprivation, which means that when they hold their breath, as infants often do, they do so until they black out. Riley-Day patients tend to die young - around half before the age of 30 - from their injuries.
5) PICA This is a compulsive appetite for non-edible items, including clay, stones, cigarette ash, paint, glue, laundry starch, ice and even hair. Found among pregnant women and young children, particularly in poorer areas, it's thought to relate to nutritional deficiencies and may be treated with mineral supplements. However, that's just one of many theories about pica, whose precise causes are unknown. It's also found among brain damaged or mentally ill people, among whom it can take particularly dangerous turns including swallowing sharp objects (known as acuphagia). Undigested items can also form bezoars - calcified "stones" - in the stomach.
6) JERUSALEM SYNDROME This one sounds like the title of a Robert Ludlum thriller, but it's actually a religious psychosis triggered by a visit to Jerusalem. Observed since medieval times, its victims may believe that they are prophets and parade around the city proclaiming the Holy Writ or exhorting sinners to repent. Affecting around 100 tourists per year, it generally clears up once they leave town. However, it can have serious repercussions, as with the widespread rioting that ensued when Australian man Michael Rohan set fire to the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in 1969, convinced he was the "Lord's emissary". In a related note, some Nigerian Pastors don't even have to visit Jerusalem before getting this syndrome.
7) FOREIGN ACCENT SYNDROME Imagine suddenly putting on a convincing French accent. Or Scottish. Or Italian. It sounds like fun, but it's no joke for the victims of Foreign Accent Syndrome, which can set in after strokes or other brain trauma. Without warning, they'll start speaking their native tongue with a different accent, which could sound anything from Swedish to South African. Victims need never have heard the accent in question, according to Oxford University researchers Dr Jennifer Gurd and Dr John Coleman, who believe it arises from damage to areas of the brain responsible for language production, altering pitch, pronunciation and speech patterns. So people with the syndrome aren't putting on a foreign accent, it just sounds that way.
No matter how long you’ve been courting your partner, the relationship remains unrecognised until the formal introduction ceremony. However, this also means the couple is ready to tie the proverbial knot. The introduction ceremony traditionally takes place in the bride-to-be’s family home. Her fiance’s people come to the house to pay their respects to her family and “state their intentions”. After the bride-to-be’s family accepts the official proposal, both families share food and drinks. These days, however, introduction ceremonies are as good as one of the three wedding ceremonies that Nigerians usually observe. That’s up next.
Three Weddings
Unless someone is a ‘foreigner’—or don’t mind the risk of being referred to as such—Nigerians are expected to have three different wedding ceremonies. The first one is the traditional wedding. Depending on what part of the country you’re from, this involves bride price, flogging, mass prostrations, wine carrying, picking out your spouse from a line of thoroughly-veiled women, and the like. Then come the court and church/mosque weddings. That way, a couple’s union has been recognised by the provisions of Nigerian traditions, religion, and civil law. All three weddings also involve feasting, so couples need to be financially prepared for this as well.
Omugwo (After-Birth Care)
Extremely significant among the Igbos, but also widely practiced across other Nigerian tribes is omugwo. The Yorubas call it “Itoju omo”, Igalas call it “Iwagwala-oma”, and the Annangs, “Umaan” After a mother gives birth to her baby, her mother-in-law comes to the home to take care of the new mother and her. The nursing mother is not required to lift a finger as everything is done for her—including bathing the baby, massaging the new mother’s tummy, performing household chores, cooking special meals such as peppersoups, and so on. If a mother-in-law is unavailable for an omugwo, the woman’s own mother or a close relative can take up the mantle. Omugwos are a thing of pride and so symbolic that they have been known to cause quarrels among family members over who is most capable of caring for the nursing mother and her new baby. Omugwos last for at least three months.
Nwaboy (Servicehood/Apprenticeship)
The Nwaboy method of apprenticeship is prominent among Nigeria’s Igbo people. It is seen as way to spread wealth among kinsmen. This tradition requires that a young boy/man leaves his family home with an older, rich relative or family friend (who is usually an established businessperson) for “training”. During this training, the apprentice is entrusted with various tasks ranging from mundane errands to coordination and supervision, and they are exposed to the world of business transactions. Oftentimes, valuables are put in his care. At the end of his training, he is given his “freedom”—a tidy sum to start a business and sustain himself and his family.
“Sunday Rice”
Sunday rice is a weekly fixture in most Nigerian homes. The anticipation of the traditional dish after church services makes every Sunday complete for some. For others, just the pure joy of preparing the delicacy and sharing it with the family or neighbours does the magic. Sunday rice is usually plain-white rice and stew (made with tomatoes and pepper) with chicken, beef, or fish. However, on special occasions, it could be jollof, fried, concoction, or any other variation of cooked rice.
Child Dedication Ceremony
This is separate from the important child-naming ceremony commonly practiced in parts of Africa. At the naming, the baby’s immediate and extended family gather to give it names, particularly ones that will determine how prosperous it would be in life and such. However, like child-naming ceremonies, child dedications’ prominence also cut across different religious faiths. The purpose of a dedication is essentially to thank god for the baby’s presence and present it as a loyal servant.
Spraying Money
Certain people attend ceremonies in Nigeria just to partake in this interesting practice. At grandly-organised weddings, burials, child naming or dedications, and birthdays, people—regardless of financial status—come forward while dancing to rain money on those on the dance floor. Of course, only crisp notes are encouraged. Reasons for the act (or art) of spraying money include portraying the social status of those being celebrated, showing how much they are appreciated, and a basic show of flamboyance and affluence. Spraying money is such a symbolic feature in Nigerian ceremonies that an Ijaw bride won’t smile until she’s been sprayed.
Greeting Elders
In Nigeria, social etiquette transcends common pleasantries and is actually a statement of respect and upbringing. Several things go into greeting an elder in Nigeria, including ethnic background and gender. For example, certain tribes require a female to kneel on the floor or curtsy to greet an elder, while males are expected to prostrate, squat, or bow completely to the ground. This is regardless of where or the number of times younger people have seen their elders that day. Another traditional form of greeting in Nigeria is one that’s done after meals. In some homes, the more elders that are present, the more thank yous are expected from younger guests.
Looking ‘Fresh’ on Your Wedding Day
Only Nigerian brides understand how crucial it is to fill out their clothes nicely and glow on their wedding day. The extent of happiness and well-being of the bride is practically expected to be physically viewed in how healthy and radiant she looks by the time her wedding day rolls around. In the past, this was achieved in fattening rooms. Fattening rooms originated among the Efik, and they were created to prepare girls for womanhood and marriage through several rituals and rites. One tradition involved waiting on her around the clock and doing everything possible to make her gain weight and portray affluence. These days, however, gaining weight is no longer the goal, and women just stick to ensuring they look as ‘fresh’ as possible by going to the spa, avoiding stressful or strenuous tasks, eating right, and resting.
Right Hand Only
Nigerians see it as a sign of disrespect and disgusting to greet, eat, hand over, or collect things from people with your left hand unless you’re left-handed or have no right arm. And even then, it might be difficult to be granted exemption from the rule. It’s worse when the person you extend your left hand out to is older than you are.
I have come to realise that we graduates left businesses to the class of people who did not have opportunity for education. Until I joined Building Materials trading, I never knew that prices of commodities/materials/items are fixed by importers who imported the goods. These importers are with less knowledge of what they imported until they have empirical feelings/physical inspection of their goods. What do I mean here? They lack what it takes to know about the goods before importation like- indept interpretation of details of the goods eg specifications, dimensions like unit of measurements ( cm,m,kg etc ) scientific parameters ( thickness, strength of materials, properties of materials etc ). But when they see the goods, they will be able to tell apart the original from the less original. Some of us here knows little about importation but I will teach how to calculate shipment cost from China ( Guangzhou or Yiwu or Shenzen ) to Onitsha or Lagos. I am not talking about air freight or air express freight. I am talking about sea/ocean freight from China to Lagos or Onitsha. This is very very cheap. For those of us whose goods are delivered through air freight or air cargo or air express, I pity you because your profit will be knocked off by your air freight cost. Think of it, assuming you want to import goods ( eg wire ) that weighs 4kg per roll of 500meters, 17kg per carton (ie 4 rolls in a carton + the weight of the carton ) and the item is sold N5,000/roll in Nigeria, how then will you make profit when you are charged $10/kg + N400/kg for customs clearance when you ship through air or Cargo that collects $5/kg + N400kg for customs Clearance. Your profit is gone already. Exchange rate is N360/USD.
Sit down and learn how to calculate sea freight shipments so that you can integrate the shipping cost into the cost of goods to know if you will make profit when compared to the prices of the same goods in our local markets. I noticed most of us import only phone and its accessories. Sit and learn

LaHeiress: As you all know, I have been a firm supporter of budget weddings and I always preach on how to save money on wedding ceremonies in Nigeria.
I recently noticed that people are ashamed to admit that they had a budget wedding, hence my decision to break down my wedding budget. The whole purpose is to educate people that weddings do not have to be expensive to be memorable.
Enjoy!
In my previous post, I broke down my Traditional Wedding Budget. In this post, I will be breaking down my White Wedding Budget.
Our Budget was Two Million Naira for both the white wedding and the traditional ceremony. But we decided to work with a 1.5 Million naira Budget, keeping the five hundred thousand naira as our extra, in case we had one or two other expenses that may come up.
We had a budget, so I knew better than to visit some wedding stores I knew I would breakmy heart if I eventually ended up buying nothing from.
PRIORITY
Pictures, our pictures had to be good.
Food and drinks: Everybody must have enough to eat and drink
Shoes: My shoes had to be comfortable as I am not a heels person. More so, it was going to be a garden wedding, so I had to choose my shoes carefully.
We also agreed that we wont be borrowing or asking for money from anyone be it family or friends. We were going to work with what we had. And that was exactly what we did!
Before now, we had asked both parents where they were willing to contribute and we were well informed. We also informed them that we wanted to keep it small and intimate and we were working with a 200 guest list.
We spaced our dates, our Traditional Wedding was in November 2015 and the White Wedding was in February 2016. Both events took place in Ibadan.
WEDDING THEME: Vintage/Rustic
White Wedding Expenses Breakdown
GUESTS: 200
1. HALL: We decided to use a garden. It cost N30,000. ($75)
2. DECORATION: For our white wedding, the decor was not important, mainly because of the wedding theme, so we opted for a simple and vintage look and feel. This cost N200,000. ($500)
3. TABLE, CHAIRS and CANOPY RENTALS. 75,000 ($185.7)
4. TABLE SETTINGS: this comprises of charger plates, cutleries, wine and water glasses, napkin fold. This cost N55,000. ($137.5) 5. CATERER: My mother is a caterer and she was handling the catering but we supported her by giving her N50,000 and some ingredients to aid her cooking. ($125)
6. DRINKS: I bought the drinks myself and found a means to transport the drinks to the venue. Rented chilling chests and got waiters and put someone in charge of the drinks. We opted for breakable bottles instead of the plastic bottles. This cost N130,000. (No alcohol). ($325)
7. MAKEUP: I had bargained the price for both days since my traditional wedding. So I paid half during the traditional and balanced it for the wedding. N15,000. ($37.5)
8. PHOTOGRAPHY: N60,000. ($150). Bear in mind that I had also bargained for the two days since my traditional wedding. We had no videographer, (we were not going to watch it anyways)

Pease note that we adopted a strictly by invitation method and many of our parents friends could not believe that it actually worked and kept asking them how we were able to achieve such a wedding in Nigeria.
Even with the budget we set aside, we still had to spend a little more above it. That just goes to say that weddings are generally expensive.
Planning my wedding was easy for me because once we were able to make up our minds about our budget and vendors, we started paying them immediately, which took the financial stress totally off us.
I wouldn't have been able to deal with the stress of planning three weddings in the same month as mine, if I had not started with the planning process early.
Your wedding can be as beautiful as you want it to be. It really isn't about how inexpensive or expensive it is. It is really all about you being happy.
So if you want an expensive wedding and you are financially capable, by all means please go ahead. This post is basically for those who feel ashamed to admit that their wedding was one on a budget.
DISCLAIMER: These prices may not work for these vendors now, especially not with this current economy. This post is just to show that you can have a memorable wedding without having to break the bank and also to show that there are vendors who are willing to work within your budget and still deliver quality services. Thank you.
I also understand that this budget is still too expensive for some people. But just look for vendors that are willing to work with your budget and you like their works and have a faboolous day! I wish all intending couples a happy wedding day ahead!

Woah! Great testimonials here for your wedding business model... Smoking hot.
Askgloria: Do you know how to calculate your net worth or you are possibly unfamiliar with? Well, I will put you through that. Read on to understand how to calculate your net worth.
What Really is a Net Worth In a simple term what you have left after subtracting your assets from your liabilities is your net worth. In another word, the summation of all your possessions from your cash to your home value, and then deducted from your debts, namely mortgage, car or credit card.
How Do You Calculate Your Net Worth
Now that you have understood what is meant by net-worth, what next is learning how to calculate your net worth. From the definition, you should have identified that the process of calculating one's net worth is simple, but you should never escape adding all information including your liabilities and assets.
It is even recommended by financial planners that there be a folder to keep the list of all financial assets and liabilities and must review for update each year. If you have not, then you need to get to work now.
But the collections of information can be mind-boggling, hence the moment you do, ensuing addition will never be much. One more thing before we get started is, be sure that close-trusted family relatives, most importantly your wife and children have open entry to it when an information is needed.
1. Calculate Your Assets To make this easier, begin by listing out first your largest assets. What a business owner would see as an investment might be different from an employee. ensure that accurate evaluation of your assets in dollars. You will be required to gather all latest statements for more liquid assets owned. The next is listing out other high valued personal materials. The last part is to add up all that you have listed out; that is your total asset.
2. Calculate Your Liabilities Just as you did with your assets, start with the most superior liabilities. Then the next move is to calculate all personal liabilities. This includes loans and balance on your credit card. After listing them out, then add up all the liabilities; that is your total liabilities.
3. Deducting Your Assets From Your Liabilities Subtract all the total assets that you get from the total liabilities. Therefore, what you have left is your net worth. What will you do if all your net worth arrives at a negative, it is telling you that you have a negative net worth, whereas, a positive net worth is a positive net worth! The beauty of calculating you're net worth is just to help visualize what you can compare with the future. Then, what is next expected?
Repeat the process at least once in a year. This is paramount to tell you where you have to work more. It will reveal if there are outstanding progress. There is no harm in working towards having a more positive net worth. As you do it yearly, you will keep an eye on it.
Askgloria: To stay financially safe, it is best to maintain financial integrity through personal finance management.
Lazarus was a salary earner, he earned enough to live good. He was alone on his earnings until he decided to raise a family – a great step. He married Rebecca, a sweetheart from the same organization. It was all fine from the onset. Both were paid equally and robustly. They usually had more than enough, hence, they would buy luxuries just to keep up with their paycheques. Five years later, they had three children, they felt they should nurture them in accordance with their lifestyle. Things changed, they did their best to keep the standard as there was nothing but a little rise in their salaries. They did not save for the future. They couldn’t afford the luxuries anymore, they entered the unusual mode of survival; one that is alien to them. They couldn’t keep up, salaries started coming later, expenses are higher and lifestyle cannot be lowered: they had unresolved issues night after night.
The family (Mr. and Mrs. Owolabi) had to divorce five years later. It was so sad to see a once sweet and lovely family turned bitter. People never understood the real cause. They did not know that the family went bankrupt and both parties were not willing to take their respective share of the blame. Although they were educated, they were financially uneducated as they couldn’t manage their personal finances.
Personal finance means monetary management which a person (an individual) or a family unit performs. It involves making plans for the future through savings, while also maintaining a good life through budgeting, taking into consideration money earned, values of things purchased, costs of possessions and how they affect the future.
When planning personal finances, the individual would consider the suitability to his or her needs, that is, favoring needs over wants. Priorities must be set. A good planning is needed for all daily, weekly and monthly monetary transactions. Remember the saying, “a man who failed to plan has already planned to fail,” therefore, to stay financially fit, one must plan to efficiently manage his money.
Are you having a family? Then you must ensure that every member is sensitive to money management through self-consciousness. More-so, having personal finance principles take control or influence your spending and earnings (financial behavior) is of great importance. These principles include: salary is not savings, financial planning is now and for everyone, spending must be below earnings and must not equal or above earnings, every item acquired must come cheap and of best quality, and finally, a goal must be set for savings (examples include investment for retirement, children school fees, medical bills et al.).
Personal finance management helps you make more money and also helps you save more money. Having a low salary doesn’t make you poor, likewise, having a high salary doesn’t automatically make you rich, how you manage your finances will decide where you belong.
Personal finance management is personal, everyone must engage in it. A family should talk about money, bad debts should be avoided (items not essential and purchased on loans), and generally, debts should be avoided. The goal of this science is to make one financially independent, stable and comfortable. You will be able to track your income, your expenses and your savings with this technique. You will also be able to choose your lifestyle in accordance with your plans, as you will know that all your expenses must not be greater than 50-80% of your earnings.
Age is just a number especially when it comes to finances, children are not exempted from this system of personal finance management. Almost all of them will follow the financial principles their parents taught them, because of the foundation matters. Teenagers and adults need to plan wisely and prepare for the future; theirs and their generations. When the future is considered, everyone must play a role through individual cash management and delayed gratification – all can be done by maintaining a standardized personal finance.
Personal finance is one’s life and it must be protected.
Well, after so much pain, Mr. Owolabi decided to figure out what went wrong with his finances. He discovered his mistakes: The unnecessary trips, the unneeded luxuries, the undervalued expenses and most importantly his short-sightedness regarding his family future.
He did not practice the science of money management, he relied so much on his salary, he did not plan ahead; he failed to adhere to personal finance management.
Many were once rich and now poor, many footballers, many musicians, many actors and actresses, so many, even with the fame and stardom couldn’t save their future, many like Mr. Owolabi missed it because of their ignorance about PERSONAL FINANCE.
Personal finance is the key to transforming your life from that poor thing to that rich elite. If you are already an elite, personal finance will help secure your position.
It is never too late to start, maintain your personal finance now, so that when the tables finally turn, your spot, your share, and your future will be strengthened and secured.
I plan to post a lot of select images from the image database of the Frobenius Institute's website, but those pdfs above give a brief and interesting overview of some of the areas in Nigeria that Frobenius's expedition team focused heavily on during some of their expeditions to Africa.
I got my first degree at 22. Started working , made money, got married, raised 3 kids, built my house,2 cars and all but still decided to follow my childhood dream and went into medical school at 35. The average age in my class was 18. I wasn't ashamed. Guess what, I got inducted 2 yrs ago at the age of 40. Now a medical doctor.
This is the sole reason why i want her educated. She has me as a father figure, she should succeed. Just needed advise on easiest way to help her.
Thank u all once again
@layi Awesome! Truly inspiring post about your career progression to becoming a medical doctor. Congrats to you.
I joined NL originally in 2005 and I remember you used to be active on NL back in the day.
Thanks for touching that girl's life for the benefit of all. When I was younger, my dad's immediate older brother (my paternal uncle) did the same thing back in the early 1980s for a male house keeper by the name Ayo from Benin Republic. He's doing well with his fabrication firm in Lagos today and he's regarded as a close family member. Even his younger sister was able to travel to London while working as a domestic help for a wealthy man and now she's married. These instances taught me a vital lesson to also touch the lives of people.
I'm glad that lifelong relationships were formed and the status of these folks was elevated. You and your family are on the right track with assisting this girl.
pocohantas: You and your wife have done well, Sir.
On schooling, it is not compulsory she goes to school. I mean formal/classroom school. A teenager who could run away from an abuser and trace your house after years isn’t a dull one. I guess you want her to be able to speak good English and solve basic mathematics. These things, though important- are gradually fazing out as a CORE. Get her tutors to teach her those basic things you want her to learn. After that, she should learn a SKILL. Ask her which skill she likes, they always have one.
She is 15 already. Even if she starts from JSS1, by the time she is done with NYSC, the Nigerian goal of attending universities to get white collar jobs would be defeated as she won’t meet HR demands- 25yrs with MSc from a reputable institution and 5years (cognate) work experience in the FMCG sector.
Home tutoring and skill acquisition is the way to go. I’ll also suggest you drop the house assistant tag. A 15yrs old child shouldn’t be assisting a house.
An intelligent feedback! It reveals the blindspots.
