Nihilist:
The question was 'How'
How do we prevent?
It's simple. What are the factors that cause people to rape ? Quench them.

What are the factors that cause people to be raped? Quench them.

Case closed.

Nihilist:
I think assuming parental guidance can curb sexual assaults is a gross over-simplification of the issue at hand.

The reason that Nature-Nuture debate has raged for so long is because even the most eminent of psychologists still can't decide if human beings are born intrinsically bad or raised to be bad, or if it's a combination of both.

Rape like most other crimes is a reactive crime, but unlike most of the major crimes it is also very opportunistic in nature.

The generally impulsive nature of most rapes makes it very difficult to predict who turns out rapist, which means that it can be almost impossible for parents to detect in problem behaviour in their kids.

A child who steals often might become a thief in adulthood. A child who exhibits a mean streak or animal cruelty could grow up to murder.

How do you detect a child rapist? And how can you teach him not to rape?

That's why I think the only way to deal with rape is self defence at personal level, and institute punitive measures at Government level
they can be detected and rehabbed, better still they can be prevented from becoming child rapists

Than the lives that are currently being laid to waist at the sound of a bomb and cocking of a rifle?
Not saying that. Just saying it is an issue that always requires attention.

If someone is faced with the problem of rescuing his wife from fleeing robbers, his parents from kidnappers, his children from ritualists, some other VIP from a burning house, it would be wiser to multitask rather than concentrating on just one

I think I like this idea.
But it's a pipe dream for now.
There are more pressing issues which demand apt attention.
Our president has made it clear that Nigeria is still far from el-dorado.
We can only hope for better direction on the part of those whom we have given the mandate to pilot the affairs of our nation.

Slowly, steadily, and hopefully, we will get there.
I am optimistic.
Health is always a pressing issue

Pls, can you explain the bolded fully.
If you listen to the stories of some notorious criminals, They were all good people until something happened eg some witnessed brutal killing of their loved ones and that brought out the beast in them, activated their potential to commit crime

Please I don't mean to compare murder with rape. If such an incident is prevented, both the culprit and the victim are protected, and then such a crime will ultimately be prevented

PoliticsRe: Debunking The Latest Lie: Nigeria did not earn $10bn from Raw Cocoa exports by alphalpha(m): 9:26am On Aug 02, 2015
Flyoruboy:
LOL. Guy, you are a jobless maggot. And your Yoruphobia will lead to your untimely death if you don't change course. Like I did in the other thread that spurned this one, your foolishness will still not change the fact that the SW adds the most to Nigeria's non-oil sector of the economy.
Imagine, you are using Ghana's figures to dispute Nigeria's own figures as quoted by GEJ's former Agric Mininster? ? Na so your hatred reach.

According to Adesina the former Agric Minister, Nigeria exported $10billion dollars worth of Cocoa last year (http://businessdayonline.com/2014/11/nigeria-exports-10bn-raw-cocoa-annually). More than 90% of that revenue emanated from the SW. That doesn't include other Agric export earnings (from Tobacco, Cashew, e.t.c) contributed by the region and generated as revenue for the Federal government. Now include the revenue generated from the air and seaports, as well as customs border posts, running into additional billions of dollars, all generated from the SW, also goes into the federal coffers -- and the region doesn't even receive any "13% derivation" from these earnings as the Niger Delta does on Oil revenue. The South West states currently receive more allocations from the center than the SE states simply coz they contribute more to the national commonwealth, simple. Can you present to me any verifiable data of the SE contribution to the the Nigerian commonwealth?

Every intelligent person knows that SW Nigeria, besides the enormous contribution it already making to the commonwealth, is a geological freak of nature in comparison to other regions in terms of untapped reserves of verifiable commercial quantity mineral resources with the potential of making the region one of the richest in Africa, if not the world -- http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/the-case-for-solid-minerals-development/215779/.

Thank God again that Buhari has promised to accelerate the diversification of the economy all thanks to the oil slump (which is forecasted to persist into the foreseable future), finally we will hear word and know who the real parasites are without oil dependence.

Guy, I warn you though that if you continue on this your bad-belle path then your premature death will be certain. I know nothing would gladen your heart more than to believe your own fables about Yoruba dependence on oil money than other groups in Nigeria. You are still yet to answer my question about whether or not your own South East can survive without allocation, and you are cleverly refusing to tell us your SE contributions to the Nigerian commonwealth that can come close to rivaling the Yorubas'.

Again, I advice that you had better take it easy with your Yoruba obsession.

FlirtyKaren:
Melinda Gates is wife to the richest man in the world, Bill Gates. She was pictured yesterday washing plates in a village in Malawi.

According to Forbes magazine’s annual list of the world’s billionaires, Bill Gates’ net worth is $76 billion and the billionaire’s spouse Melinda, who describes herself as a “philanthropist, businesswoman, mother, passionate advocate for women and girls,” shared these photos of herself on her IG page. .

Melinda has been described as one of the world’s famous social activist “who is trying to serve the people in ignorance.” She's pictured with a 20-litre bucket of water on her head alongside two other Malawian women, walking on a dirt road, after the cut

I feel that I finally need to speak up since I now know that merely creating threads, pointing fingers and name-calling will no longer suffice. I am plain fed up with the hundreds of Rape cases being published in my country.
How do these cases end?
We even hear of pastors and elderly men begging the parents of the victim to withdraw their case against an offender who raped their child. And victims being shamed and blamed and at the end of the day, the rapist could relocate and commit the same offence all over again. Then some men now say that 9year old girls seduce them and witches push them to rape. So pathetic and shameful.

Okay, you may feel that it doesn't concern you but then what goes around comes around, and one day, it will finally concern you, directly or indirectly.

So, my question is.. What is the most viable way to curb sexual offences, rape and abuse of any form; against women, men, girls, boys and helpless children especially.

Do we begin to publish names and pictures of CONVICTED sexual offenders and paste them in public places?

Do we start a publication, blog, website where we put up the details of every sexual offence plus details of the rapists, then send the link to everyone we know?

Do we solicit any of our dailies to help publish these notices profiling sexual offenders and their addresses?

What do we do?

P.S: Pls, let us not talk about the NPF, or prison sentences or even any sort of law put in place that never favours the poor or the voiceless masses. Think about the physical and psychological effect on these helpless children subjected to rape by adults who later bribe their way out.

I plead that if you have links to dailies or ideas on things that can be done to proffer an effective and lasting solution to this evil debacle that has befallen our society, kindly let us know.
It is my belief that when a rapist sees his picture and name in public, it will stop him from committing the same offence again, and also serve as a deterrent to others who plan on abusing anyone in the future.

Disclaimer: My post do not cover those who were/are/will be wrongly accused of a crime they know nothing about. And only CONVICTED rapists should be exposed and punished.

Thank you.
Pls, send me a PM if you do not want to comment on this thread.
Looking forward to positive and lasting solutions.

All ideas/contributions are welcome as long as we stick to topic.

I don't believe in cutting down unwanted trees as much as in rooting them out.

That said, it is expedient that we address the root cause of the matter, which is the rapist or paedophile or whatever fancy name they are called.

It is said that everybody has a drop of greatness in them. Likewise everybody has a drop of villainy in them. ... of çourse, everyone is a potential rapist/paedophile etc

The problem today is because of the activation of this potential, and the alarming rate at which it has increased...

To solve this problem, we need to stop/annihilate/eradicate the activation of the rape potential. We can achieve this with the help of an activated rapist/paedo...

We have them here on Nairaland. They should volunteer for this great cause. If no one does, then I, myself, will volunteer. But I must warn you, my rape potential is 0. (zero to ñothingness)

First, protect the underage girls. From the age of 5/6 my nieces already know that no one is supposed to touch them anyhow. Also, they never go out alone. They are also told to report any teacher or any guardian or relative behaving funny to them.

It's only the foolish ones who repeat the same thing over and over again but expect different result.

I have come to realize that PMB needs time to carry out a thorough overhauling of the system if positive results must be achieved. Rushing things as done in the past will yield no desired outcome.

Imagine what absence of good governance framework has caused Nigeria in just last decade! A whopping $150bn!

Nigeria is patriarchal and all these occur, so I don't get your point.
How do you explain a case like Nigeria, that is evidently so patriarchal, ruled by Nigerian men since independence and totally being destroyed by men at the moment? If anything Nigerian Patriarchy is destroying itself (to my pleasure of course) since it has been unable to curb its excesses and create a better place for women and children.
At least your African forefathers despite the society being patrilineal had the foresight of putting up structures that did not silence the voice of the African woman, but since the colonialists came in from a region that regarded womanhood as disfigured images of men, you men gladly helped them destroy these female structures. Even the colonialists have abandoned these demeaning ideals and their societies are better than yours. So how has this Nigeria's demonic patriarchy benefited our society?

This surely doesn't look like men who have gone 'soft', lmao.

Many men – including fathers – bear the burden of an inherited historical arrogance and superiority over women. I see it everyday when I watch a man say sexist remarks at an ordinary woman going about her business or on social media. And, of course, I see it in myself. We can't just come to terms with the fact that a woman can employ you, pay you, serve you a querry, or sack you when she wants.

Lmao. At least you are being honest here that women have now been empowered, it is left for you as men to learn how to adapt to the empowered woman.
Their societies better than ours? Our societies differed greatly then and now. They aren't better in that regard, except maybe with the women

I also believe that men cooking at home is not wrong especially if the woman is the breadwinner.

i think that should be between the couple. they should understand themslves.

Question: on who works more, stays at home more, or is breadwinner;

what if wifey is a billionaire, hubby is a millionaire, both can equally, independently cater for the family? Who does the cooking etc?

to some women, the man is the enemy, the evil that should be conquered...

to some men, equality is an evil that must not be allowed to bud...

to the OP et al, the following measures should be taken;

special courts should be set up for such fathers,
special lawmen should be authorized,
special laws should be made,

all aimed at helping such fathers to man-up...

anything that can be done to return the family to its position as an institution for building leaders that add/multiply to the society, must be done quickly...

to me, anything that does more harm than good to the family, be it equality or inequality or discrimination, should must be rooted out...
HealthRe: Who Should Be Called A Doct by alphalpha(m): 2:37pm On Jul 20, 2015
let's assume all your claims are correct.
I've held the belief that, the title, Doctor, is awarded to persons who have undergone thorough, intensive training/study in a particular subject because they are likened to medical doctors whose field of study naturally demands that.
The natural name of a person who treats sick people is Doctor.
