FreeStuffsNG:
‘Worse than Great Recession’: US manufacturing contracts for 6th straight month as tariffs bite

US manufacturers said that the sweeping import duties were making it difficult to manufacture goods in the United States.

Published Sep 03, 2025,

WASHINGTON – US manufacturing contracted for a sixth straight month in August as factories dealt with the fallout from the Trump administration’s import tariffs, with some manufacturers describing the current business environment as “much worse than the Great Recession”.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) survey on Sept 2 also showed some manufacturers complaining that the sweeping import duties were making it difficult to manufacture goods in the US.

President Donald Trump has defended his protectionist trade policy, which has raised the nation’s average tariff rate to the highest in a century, as necessary to revive a long-declining US industrial base.

That was reinforced by government data showing spending on the construction of factories dropped in July and was down 6.7 per cent from a year ago.

Mr Trump said on Sept 2 that his administration would ask the Supreme Court for an expedited ruling on his tariffs after a US appeals court ruled on Aug 29 that most of them were illegal, adding more uncertainty for businesses.

Mr Stephen Stanley, chief US economist at Santander US Capital Markets, said: “I continue to see the broad economy generally and the manufacturing sector in particular as in a holding pattern until tariff-related uncertainty recedes.”

The ISM said its manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) edged up to 48.7 in August from 48.0 in July. A PMI reading below 50 indicates contraction in manufacturing, which accounts for 10.2 per cent of the economy.

In June 2025, a record total of $884 million in loans were given out by pawnshops here, a 29 per cent increase from the $686.4 million in June 2024.

Pawnshop loans rose to $884 million in June amid surging gold price, economic uncertainty
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the PMI would rise to 49.0.

Seven industries, including textile mills, miscellaneous manufacturing and primary metals, reported growth in August.

Among the 10 industries reporting contraction were makers of paper products, machinery, electrical equipment, appliances and components, and computer and electronic products.

Tariffs continued to dominate commentary from manufacturers.

Some makers of transportation equipment said conditions were worse than the 2007 to 2009 recession, adding “there is absolutely no activity” and “this is 100 per cent attributable to current tariff policy and the uncertainty it has created”. Some viewed the conditions as consistent with “stagflation”.

Some electrical equipment, appliances and components producers complained that “‘made in the US’ has become even more difficult due to tariffs on many components”.

They said the “administration wants manufacturing jobs in the US, but we are losing higher-skilled and higher-paying roles”.

Others reported that because of the lack of “stability in trade and economics, capital expenditure spending and hiring are frozen”.

Manufacturers of computer and electronic products said “tariffs continue to wreak havoc on planning and scheduling activities”, adding that “plans to bring production back into (the) US are impacted by higher material costs, making it more difficult to justify the return”.

Food, beverage and tobacco products manufacturers warned that everything made of organic sugar was “about to get significantly more expensive” because of a 50 per cent tariff on imports from Brazil and the US Department of Agriculture’s elimination of the speciality sugar quota.

Tariffs have been slow to pass through to higher inflation, with economists arguing that businesses are still selling merchandise accumulated before the import duties kicked in.

Businesses also have been absorbing some of the tariff-related costs. But inventories were drawn down in the second quarter, and companies have warned that tariffs are raising their costs, which economists expect will eventually be passed on to consumers.

Will Trump’s tariffs end the bull run?
America’s fantasy of home-grown chipmaking
It is, however, not all doom and gloom for manufacturing.

Businesses have been boosting spending on artificial intelligence (AI) products, which is helping to offset some of the drag from import duties. Spending on intellectual property products grew at its fastest pace in four years in the second quarter, while investment in equipment was strong.

Economists expect the AI spending spree to continue, with factories also likely to get a boost from accelerated depreciation allowances on investments in Mr Trump’s tax and spending Bill.

Mr Ben Ayers, senior economist at Nationwide, said: “Tax incentives that start in 2026 may help to boost investment later in 2025 and into 2026, but for now, most producers remain in wait-and-see mode.” REUTERS

This could be the most important video I’ve ever made. What you’re about to watch is 6 months of work cut down into 11.5 minutes.

Hyperbaric treatment has been touted as somewhat of a medical miracle, and I wanted to put it to the test.

There has also been a recent study showing that 60 90 minute sessions at 2 atmospheres of pressure can lengthen your telomeres and reverse the aging process.

The more research I did on hyperbaric, the more unbelievable results seemed.

With the incredible help from the team @atxhyperbarics I documented the full 60 session protocol, and I did all my blood work and telomeres before and after.

This is a landmark video that is going to bring much needed awareness to one of the most important medical interventions of our time.

TravelRe: Canada Hype And Travel Rush: Here Are Things You Need To Know by AlphaTaikun: 12:16am On Aug 17, 2025
Princewill1:
The high successes recorded by dubious politicians, fraudulent pastors and ponzi scheme operators in Nigeria are living proofs that Nigerians can be so gullible. We can easily be deceived. The astronomical hype on Canada is the latest deceit in town. Here are things you need to know before immigrating.

1. The list of richest Nigerians is filled with Nigerians living at home. You're more likely to make it into Forbes if you live in Nigeria. At least that's what the stat shows, whether people making into Forbes in Nigeria are engaging in corrupt practices is a story for another day. The odds of becoming a dollar billionaire favours those at home . No Diaspora Nigerian has ever made it into Forbes billionaire list.

2. There are more money to be made in a developing economy than in a developed economy. That's why as you're rushing out of the country, Lebanese, Indians and Chinese are rushing in. Only few will understand. You're sitting on the biggest market in Africa yet you haven't realize this but the Lebanese and the Indians knew this.

3. If you are the type who don't fancy working for others, it's much more easier to own a business in Nigeria than in Canada/US. Western countries were set up for the 99% populace to work for 1% elites. Their education systems were designed to produce workforce for the rat race. Not to create employers of labour.

4. It's stupidity to resign from a high-paying job in Nigeria in a bid to relocate to Canada/US. Your eyes will get clear up when you start facing the hard realities in Canada. Those who had made this mistake in the past are ashamed to come on social media to talk about it. The ones talking on Twitter are 'freshers' who just arrived.

5. If you want to secure 2nd passport for your kids, you don't necessarily need to immigrate to achieve this. There are other ways, one method is overseas child birth.

6. You're 5x more likely to be shot and rubbed in New York than in Lagos. Poor neighborhoods all over the world has more crime rates. The thing is, when you finally made it in Nigeria, you can move to high brow areas with lesser crime.

7. Nigerians are spending up to 8millions ($21k) and above to immigrate to Canada/US whereas an average canadian or American citizen can't boast of $10k in their bank A/C's. They live pay check to pay check.

8. Some Nigerians claims that they ain't relocating because of the money but because of good infrastructure, good health care system, value for their money etc. That's a lie! 98% of Nigerians who're eager to travel out are relocating because of economic reasons. There are good infrastructure, good health care system and value for money in countries like Kuwait, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Chile etc but Nigerians ain't trooping there, indicating that their preference for Canada/US is purely based on economic reasons.

9. It's cheaper to live in Nigeria. Canada/US promises higher minimum wage but the system will still take it away from you. It's like giving you with one hand and taking from you with another. $2k (N760k) will pay for your one year rent of 2 bedrooms apartment in a good location in Nigeria but same amount will only fetch you one month rent of a match box apartment in Canada/US.

10. This is not to stop you from traveling out but to inform you on the true realities. Economic immigration should be left for lower or working class who're struggling or to young lads who wants to school abroad and thereafter further their career overseas. Not to deceive Nigerians already earning good in corporate offices in Nigeria to resign and relocate where they will be employed as security guards or to deceive business owners who's businesses are thriving in Nigeria to close down business and relocate. Don't let them deceive you with the hype. Money don't grow on trees anywhere in the world.
Bump.

freezing of egg doesn’t guarantee that it remain fertile when ready for use. A news thread made it to NL a week ago about a SA woman who froze are egg for many years but when she was ready to have kids, the eggs were no longer fertile. So it’s not 100% safe and guaranteed.
I appreciate this info above from you.

Indeed, it's a FACT that NOT all frozen eggs become viable when needed for fertilization and implantation.

That's a really serious situation for the SA woman and I empathize with her since it seems most of her viable eggs are gone. BUT then again, there are also different country-specific statistics for the success rate of this egg freezing fertility procedure. With growing advancements in stem cell research and AI, it would be possible to have more viable frozen eggs down the road.

Recently, I read about how the use of AI has improved the detection of sperm cells in men who fertility experts couldn't find sperm cells in them using the current fertility methods used for years to detect sperm counts and that's good news for us men. So, AI is absolutely revolutionizing the fertility industry now and down the road.
TravelRe: My Cost Of Living Is 37 Times Less In Nigeria Than In London by AlphaTaikun: 7:16pm On Aug 11, 2025
Kenn55:
My brother, it doesn't matter whether he is well traveled or schooled in Harvard. In fact, that makes it worse as that education is a waste.

Who calculates cost of living for a location without factoring in the wages in that location?

When has cost of living calculation become a personal thing? Since we have 200 million people in Nigeria that means we will have around 200 million different calculations of cost of living since everyone has their own cost of living calculation.

If he had said his expenses in London is 37 times higher than Nigeria that would at least made some sense cos expenses differs. However, expenses is not necessarily the same as cost of living. Cost of living is a metric to determine how affordable a place is for people living there not for outsiders.

Cost of living calculation is general and based on location and wages. For example, if a bag of rice cost 80k in Lagos, that is the cost for everybody whether you earn 70k or 10 million a month in Lagos.

If that same bag of rice cost 70k in Benue, then that is the cost for everyone in Benue irrespective of how much they earn. It is not a personal cost.

If we are to calculate the cost of living in Benue and Lagos based on a bag of rice alone, we can't simply say Benue is cheaper cos rice is 10k cheaper unless we factor in the wages in both Lagos and Benue.

There are lots of people here that are either pushing narratives or sincerely ignorant of what they are talking about. In order to do that they end up bringing examples that makes no sense. Otherwise why will someone calculate an important metric like Cost of living which a lot of people rely on to make decisions in such a simplistic way?
I appreciate your EXTRA layers of insights and examples here as more folks reading this thread would learn the differences between the "cost of living" as a standard metric and "personal expenses."

The CLARITY of verbal or written communication is key based on the semantics or words used.

All the best.

The second woman, despite the mental issue was charged with Indecent Exposure

Aren't people funny? They pay tickets to travel with an airline and then say they don't need to switch off their phones. Get your own plane then. I doubt if she froze her eggs like Tiwa Savage did. But you never can tell, there are still a few women who had children naturally in their 50s (without egg donors).
