SoulWriter: The Ogun State Government has dismissed allegations of political witch-hunting from the former governor and current Senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, following the service of demolition notices on several of his properties.
The government, in a statement issued on Saturday, insisted that the notices are part of a standard urban renewal and town planning audit exercise, not a personal vendetta.
The development comes after Daniel’s media office raised an alarm, accusing Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration of a “malicious and vindictive abuse of power.”
Daniel’s team claimed that the notices were issued on Friday, August 8, for his Sagamu private residence, known as The Asoludero Court, and his Conference Hotels Limited.
They argued that the government was attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2022 retroactively to demolish buildings that were legally constructed long before the law was enacted, with some properties dating back to 2004. This was also linked to a previous demolition of a property belonging to his wife in Ijebu-Ode in 2023.
In response, the state government, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, on Saturday, debunked the claims, describing them as “blatant distortions of facts...”
Akinmade clarified that the notices were part of a development audit being conducted in the Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode Government Reserved Areas, an initiative he said affects many other property owners.
Akinmade said that instead of politicising the issue, Daniel should follow due process.
“All Otunba Gbenga Daniel needs to do, just like every other person in a similar situation, is to present his planning permit and land title to the relevant government agency for verification within the time specified in the notices, rather than resorting to cheap blackmail,” he said.
He further emphasised the government’s position on the rule of law.
“Nobody is bigger than the State,” Akinmade said, adding that “Senator Gbenga Daniel is distinguished, no doubt, but he is not bigger than Ogun State. He should submit himself unreservedly to the same laws he once swore twice to uphold,” he said.
The government’s statement also pointed out that such town planning audits are not new and have been a standard procedure, including during Daniel’s tenure as governor. It concluded by urging Daniel to avoid framing every interaction with government institutions as a personal attack on Governor Abiodun.

TrioVibes: Clearance Of Criminals Hideouts To Continue In FCT
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has assured that clearing of shanties and parks serving as hideouts for criminals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be a continuous exercise. Last week, men of the FCTA Development Control Department, Security Services, and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) had cleared some areas identified as major threats to the capital’s security and aesthetic standards. The exercise, which involved removing illicit structures, impounding vehicles, and seizing weapons, is being followed up with mop-up operation to ensure criminal elements do not return.
The FCT Minister's Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement on Sunday, that demolition of Jazz and Blues Entertainment at Panorama Recreational Park, Wuse Zone 3, was part of the clean-up exercise.
He said; "the operation was a targeted public safety intervention based on credible intelligence, and not an act of persecution against anyone."
The statement read; "Security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of State Services (DSS), identified several locations and facilities that serve as a criminal hideouts and safe havens across the Federal Capital City (FCC).
"Notable in these areas were the Banana Green Belt, extending from the Central Mosque area towards the Zone 3 and Zone 1 of Wuse District, including Area 10 corridor.
"In these areas, innocent citizens are assaulted by assailants who then run to seeks refuge within the surrounding Banana Green Belt/vegetation cover to escape arrest.
"The intelligence obtained and verified through several surveillance and undercover investigations of these locations, amongst which was the Jazz and Blues Entertainment at Panorama Recreational Park, Wuse Zone 3, was that a segment of the park containing shanties and batchers had evidence of sustained criminal activity tied to organized networks operating within the FCT.
"Thus, in accordance with Abuja’s Development Control Regulations and public safety protocols, the FCTA, with other security agencies commenced a city-wide cleanup exercise of all identified criminal hideouts across the FCC on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, so as to remove these criminal hideouts, and restore sanity and security to the FCC. A segment of the Jazz and Blues Entertainment at Panorama Recreational Park, Wuse Zone 3, which housed criminal activities was among the locations visited.
"Contrary to claims of abrupt action, the FCTA Department of Development Control issued several Contravention Notices to the Park’s Management prior to the exercise carried out on the August 6, 2025.
"In February 2024, a formal notice was issued to inform the park operator of the identified infractions. This was followedby three formal notices between October 2024 and June 2025, and a final eviction order dated July 25, 2025.
"However, these Contravention Notices issued by the FCTA were completely ignored.
"For the avoidance of doubts, the FCTA wishes to state that the main facilities/activities within the park (i.e. the football field, its viewing platforms, the Gymnasium area, and several other facilities) were unaffected and remain functional following the removal of these criminal elements from the park.
"While the FCTA acknowledges and respects the military service of Air Commodore Balogun, it reiterates that national service is not a license for any individual to harbour criminal elements/activities, and endanger the general public.
"Not minding any orchestrated media reports, the FCTA will continue with the city-wide cleanup exercise in the coming weeks and this shall be extended to other Districts within the FCC, in order to achieve the administration’s goal of building a city where its residents will be safe to live, work and recreate."

DeLaRue: Fantastic news. I was with a state government official recently when he said that Akwa Ibom is on the coat tail of his state (Ondo) and may likely surpass Ondo as the highest producer of cocoa in a few years.
Interestingly, I also heard that many of the farm hands and workers in Ondo cocoa farms are from Akwa Ibom. Many of the original owner families stopped showing much interest in the farms when cocoa prices was depressed for so many years. Now that prices have shot through the roof, they are returning to reclaim their farms.
Nigeria should certainly take advantage of the current international market situation.
The government official probably meant to say Cross River State.
That state is the largest Cocoa producer in that region and it has the second largest landmass after Oyo State in Southern Nigeria hence Cross River State is a major agricultural belt.
seunowa: Amid the rise in cocoa production and export in Nigeria, shipments of the product to Belgium in 2024 overtook crude oil, Nigeria’s main export product, the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, has said.
Nigeria has been experiencing a substantial increase in cocoa export revenue, fuelled by the devaluation of the naira and renewed global demand.
The rise since 2024 is also driven by climatic challenges in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, two top cocoa producers, which have reduced their production capacities.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), cocoa exports rose by 606 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2024. Exports rose from about ₦171 billion in the last quarter of 2023 to ₦1.2 trillion in the last quarter of 2024. The figures are expected to be higher this year as Nigeria generated N1.32 trillion in revenue from cocoa exports in the first quarter of 2025
Cocoa exports contributed 77 per cent of the total agricultural export of N 1.70 trillion in the first quarter of 2025.
Speaking on the increased export of Nigeria’s cocoa to Belgium, the Belgian ambassador said this presents an opportunity for Belgium to diversify its trade with Nigeria, shifting from its traditional focus on crude oil.
“Nigeria’s exports to Belgium have historically also been mostly crude oil. Now, that is no longer true in 2024, because now cocoa has overtaken crude oil as a main product of export to Belgium,” he said in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES.
Last year, Belgium was a top destination country for cocoa shipped from Nigeria.
However, experts have said the changes are not primarily triggered by increased production in Nigeria but rather by the naira devaluation, which has fuelled more exports of the product by farmers and traders. Although there are cocoa processing companies in Nigeria that transform cocoa into finished products like chocolate, many farmers and traders now prefer to export the product so as to earn more from foreign exchange.
On Belgium’s trade with Nigeria, Mr Leenknegt said, I often tell Nigerians and Belgians alike, Belgian-Nigerian relations in 2025 are going to be about agriculture and health.”
Meanwhile, refined petroleum imports from Belgium to Nigeria have begun to decline.

chisomkachy: After months of fleeing abroad to evade arrest, the founder and General Overseer of The Turn of Mercy Church, Prophet Adefolusho Aanu Olasele (alias Abbas Ajakaiye) has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for masterminding multiple shipments of illicit drugs into Nigeria.
Prophet Adefolusho was arrested at his church located in Okun Ajah, Ogombo road, Lekki area of Lagos on Sunday 3rd August 2025 by NDLEA officers who waited for him since morning to conclude the Sunday worship service in the evening before moving in on him the moment he stepped out of the church premises.
The arrest came after he had evaded arrest twice and fled to Ghana to hide since June when operatives started trailing him following the seizure of two shipments of Ghana Loud, a strain of cannabis linked to him. The first seizure of 200kg of the psychoactive substance was made at Okun Ajah beach on 4th June 2025 while another consignment of 700kg of same substance was recovered from his delivery van on 6th July 2025.
In his statement, he admitted ferrying the illicit consignments through the waterways from Ghana into Nigeria, adding that he had fled to the West African country to hide after he escaped arrest twice in the recent past.
In another operation in Lagos, NDLEA operatives on Thursday 7th August raided an apartment at Kishi House 11 Layi Ajayi Bembe street, Parkview Estate Ikoyi where they arrested a suspect Benjamin Udo Ukoh and recovered 32 pouches of Canadian Loud, a strain of Cannabis with a total weight of 15.63kg.
lagostrendboy: "Tiwa Savage Shocks Fans: Why She Froze Her Eggs & Her Powerful Message to Women Over 30"
Nigerian Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has made a deeply personal revelation that has left fans talking. In an emotional and candid conversation with media personality Zeze Mills, the award-winning singer disclosed that she has frozen her eggs — a decision she calls one of the most important steps in her life. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
At 42, Tiwa says she took the step as a precautionary measure for the future, ensuring she has the option to expand her family if she chooses. The “Somebody’s Son” crooner, who welcomed her first and only child in 2015 at age 34 with her ex-husband Teebillz, admitted she now wishes she had frozen her eggs earlier.
“Having my first child in my 30s was beautiful because I was more financially and emotionally stable,” she said. “One advice I will give to women in their 30s is, whether you want to have children or not, freeze your eggs.”
Tiwa explained that egg freezing is not just for women who are ready to start a family but also for those who want to take control of their fertility. She emphasized that life is unpredictable — relationships, careers, and health can all affect the timing of motherhood.
“I Wish I Did It Sooner” – Tiwa Savage’s Honest Confession
The superstar revealed that although she has no immediate plans for more children, she went ahead with the procedure as insurance against the biological clock.
“I don’t know if I want more kids, but in case I do, I’ve done that just to have that option. You could wake up at 36 and your egg reserve is done. Then, that’s when you decide you want to have kids, and it might be too late. So, I’m really a big advocate for egg freezing now.”
Her words come as a wake-up call for many women in their 30s, especially in Africa, where discussions about fertility preservation are still considered taboo.
Breaking the Stigma Around Egg Freezing In a society where women often face pressure to marry and have children early, Tiwa Savage’s openness is breaking barriers. She is encouraging women to think beyond societal expectations and focus on their personal timelines.
The singer also highlighted that egg freezing is not about rejecting natural motherhood but preserving the opportunity to choose when to have children.
A Growing Trend Among Celebrities and Professionals Globally, more women — especially in demanding careers — are opting for egg freezing. It gives them the freedom to focus on their careers, travel, or personal growth before starting a family. Tiwa’s revelation might just inspire a wave of awareness and acceptance of the practice in Nigeria and beyond.

Zenzu01: Victor Osimhen has already smashed the Turkish transfer fee record in a sensational €75 million move from Napoli to Galatasaray.
But away from the roar of the stadium, his long-time partner, Stefanie Ladewig, has been making waves after her recent post.
What’s the gossip?
The 24-year-old German influencer of Cameroonian descent shared photos of herself posing near a sleek private jet.
In one shot posted on her Snapchat, Ladewig is seen from behind, walking up the aircraft’s steps in a form-fitting black ensemble, her long curls cascading down her back.
In another, she leans casually against the jet, flashing a peace sign with a playful smile.
It would not be the first time Stefanie flaunts her jet-set lifestyle.
Back in April, Osimhen’s longtime partner, shared similar photos through a striking post in which she poses in front of a private jet – a post she captioned on her Instagram page: “Who’s calling my phone?”
Stefanie has been by Osimhen’s side since 2018, supporting him through his meteoric rise from Bundesliga prospect to Serie A champion and now Turkish football’s most expensive signing.
Biggeststar01: I agree that the south easterner are responsible for the insecurity in the south east, but what does the south east have to do with the onne port?
Is it the insecurity in the south east that made onne port to not function? I don’t get what you’re driving at.
Go back and read my post properly.
I CLEARLY stated that the Onne River Port is very ACTIVE so those saying they are in Lagos because of the seaports should move to Onne River Port and do their imports from there. Period.
Rubyjade: It’s easy to look at a list like this and panic: “Wow, the U.S. owes $33 trillion? China $15 trillion?!” But total public debt alone doesn’t tell the full story. Context matters — a lot.
🔹 Debt is not automatically bad. Countries like the U.S. and Japan intentionally take on debt to finance infrastructure, stimulate their economies, and manage growth. What matters more is how the debt is used and whether the economy is growing alongside it.
🔹 Size of the economy matters. The U.S. has a GDP of over $27 trillion — so while the debt figure is huge, it’s not the same as a smaller country owing the same amount. That’s why economists often look at Debt-to-GDP ratio rather than just raw numbers.
🔹 Debt is also a sign of trust. Countries like the U.S., UK, and Japan have the ability to borrow at low interest rates because investors trust them to repay. That’s very different from countries where borrowing comes with high risk and crippling interest.
🔹 Not all debt is created equal. Domestic debt (owed to citizens/institutions within the country) is far less dangerous than external debt. Some countries on that list owe mostly to themselves — others owe to foreign lenders, which is riskier.
So yes — the numbers are big. But what matters more is how well these countries manage, invest, and repay. Debt isn’t a death sentence — it’s a tool. Used wisely, it can be a ladder. Used recklessly, it becomes a trap.
The report which appeared on multiple online media platforms is right BELOW. NO mention was made of the source of funding, but it would be safe to assume that for a state like Benue, loans could be a major source of funding for the total project.
stanluiz: Until you decentralized the seaport airport monopoly lagos have. Nothing will change.
These two economic infrastructure are what give lagos state edge over other states. Decentralized them, other will go back to their state.
I have a contrarian view.
First off, it's officially known that if international flights fly directly into every major city of Nigeria, it means private airlines will go bankrupt. So, these restrictions of international airlines flying ONLY into the airports in Lagos, the FCT, Kano, Enugu, etc, were made so that the local aviation industry will thrive and NOT be suffocated by foreign airlines competing with them. So when they fly into say Lagos or Kano airports, the local airlines can generate revenue too and fly passengers out to other cities This is also done in many countries of the world to keep the domestic aviation going.
Second, the Onne River Port is already very active and Onitsha River Port is also there. I'm aware that barges have been used to move consignments to Onitsha from Onne that were brought by big ocean-going ships. So, why haven't some people moved out of Lagos? Based on CLEAR evidence, it's because of the insecurity LARGELY caused by criminal elements among the South Easterners that's making the South East of Nigeria people to stay away from using those two ports fully. Lagos State is also located on the Atlantic Ocean and directly on a major international shipping route along the West Africa coastline with access to West African markets and markets beyond.
To be candid, Lagos State MUST be decongested with the constitutional amendments (and these new bills President 'Bola Tinubu is signing into law) BECAUSE it's affecting infrastructure. Many people are BETTER off in their home towns or villages where they can LARGELY get cheaper foods to buy and eat or simply walk into their farms or home gardens and pluck fruits, vegetables, and more to cook meals.
Other States of Nigeria have to relieve Lagos State of the pressures.
Is Oshodi-Apapa Expressway [Berger to Mile 2 Axis] a STREET?
Attention to little details is important when writing articles.
Lagos State has the smallest landmass in Nigeria right behind Anambra State.
The influx of all kinds of economic migrants from different States of Nigeria and the West African region has put a lot of pressure on the infrastructure and facilities in specific areas of Lagos State such as the low-income zones despite the efforts of past and current Governors in Lagos State to demolish and gentrify several locations. The former Babatunde Raji-Fasola transformed, the Oshodi axis with green plants everywhere and traders evicted BUT the place deteriorated again. Therefore it's CLEAR that the facilities management team of Lagos State has to be revved up by the current Government of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu alongside his Commissioner for Environment and ensure that stiffer penalties of jail terms or strict community service as punishments are meted out to those who violate environmental laws OR stripping off for resale the beautiful wire-fences used to demarcate roads.
A decentralized Nigeria through the constitutional amendment would also see most of these low-income economic migrants return to their home States instead of running to Lagos State, the FCT suburbs and outskirts, Port Harcourt, etc.
Biogas toilets or bio-degradable public toilets MUST be rolled out in large numbers through a PPP program. These kinds of toilets can provide biogas for cooking or lighting up the nearby environment.
Even in some areas in London and parts of England, there have been complaints of public facilities and infrastructure running down. This is what you get in cosmopolitan environments.
seunmsg: Bola Tinubu is arguably Nigeria’s best president ever. The way he’s reforming almost all sectors and repositioning the economy for massive growth is quite remarkable. His impact in almost every sector will be felt for years to come.
A full decentralization of Nigeria through the constitutional amendments is key in order to remove the crazy inneficiences which have held Nigeria down for decades.
otipoju: This industry has the potential to employ millions of Nigerians.
From Claims adjusters, Public Adjusters, Mechanics, electricians, and renovation experts, Actuarial scientists and so on.
That's a vast ecosystem of opportunities right there. A lot of the North African countries and South Africa are succeeding in the same industry due to full implementation of the true potentials of the insurance space.
Infoguy666: President Bola Tinubu has assented to the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Bill 2025, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said on Tuesday, News360 Nigeria reports.
Now, the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, the presidency said the legislation would strengthen Nigeria’s financial sector and accelerate the nation’s march toward a $1 trillion economy.
The presidency said the Act repealed and consolidated several outdated insurance laws into a single, modern legal framework. “The new Act provides for comprehensive regulation and supervision of all insurance and reinsurance businesses operating within Nigeria,” Onanuga said.
“The NIIRA Act 2025 ushers in a new era of transparency, innovation, and global competitiveness for the insurance industry. It aligns with the Federal Government’s vision of achieving a $1 trillion economy,” he added.
A file photo of Tin Can Island Seaport, Lagos The presidential spokesman said the Act introduced measures such as:
Stringent capital requirements to ensure the financial soundness of operators;
Enforcement of compulsory insurance policies to enhance consumer protection;
Digitisation of the insurance market to improve access and efficiency;
Zero tolerance for delays in claims settlement;
Creation of dedicated policyholder protection funds, especially in cases of insolvency; and
Expanded participation in regional insurance schemes, including the ECOWAS Brown Card System.
Onanuga said the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has been mandated to administer and implement the provisions of the NIIRA 2025 to unlock the industry’s full potential and significantly improve insurance penetration across the country.

A high-speed crash involving the luxury supercar of Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, better known to his fans as 3GAR, has culminated in potential legal repercussions.
According to Nicholas Gostell, a member of the Democratic Alliance and the National Council of Provinces, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has revealed that after months of waiting and calls for action from local officials, the 29-year-old driver will face charges of reckless or negligent driving stemming from the incident that occurred on High Level Road in Sea Point on 1 March.
The crash, which occurred at a staggering speed of over 200 kilometres per hour, resulted in the supercar colliding with a pavement and a wall, leaving a scene that quickly spread across social media platforms.
Videos showcasing the savage wreckage of the vehicle garnered millions of views, as shocked onlookers witnessed the aftermath of what many described as a reckless display of speed and disregard for safety.
Gostell who had long been advocating for swift action has expressed his satisfaction with the latest developments: ‘Reckless drivers have no place tearing through our neighbourhoods and endangering lives; no matter where you live or what you drive.’
According to Nicholas Gostell, a DA member of the National Council of Provinces focusing on Security and Justice, the Sea Point Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. However, he noted with concern that weeks after the crash, no charges had been filed against the driver.
‘Whilst security companies have released video footage of the accident, clearly showing that the vehicle moved at excessive speed through a suburban area before losing control, crashing into a kerb, and colliding with a boundary wall, the driver now alleges on social media that he swerved to avoid a homeless person and that the videos were edited,’ Gostell stated.
Gostell’s comments come against a backdrop of rising frustrations among local residents about the increasingly reckless behaviour of high-performance vehicles on the streets of Sea Point and neighbouring Camps Bay.
He emphasised that luxury and modified cars are causing frequent noise disturbances and violations of traffic laws, particularly during the early hours of the morning and over weekends.
‘Residents on the Atlantic Seaboard are particularly frustrated by the prevalence of these cars racing through our streets, putting lives at risk,’ he said.
This boy has gotten himself into a big legal problem with overspeeding.

OfoIgbo: Xenophobia in Lagos is beginning to yield fruits.
There is no reason Abuja should be ahead of Lagos, especially as Lagos is the commercial/financial capital of Nigeria.
The last two years of Tinubu's administration is beginning to gradually destroy the economic attraction and potentials of Lagos
STOP talking IRRESPONSIBLE B.S. There's NO widespread xenophobia in the ENTIRE Lagos State. The wild speculation is all in your head. Do you even know what xenophobia means?
It's fine if other parts of Nigeria attract FDI. That'll decongest Lagos and reduce pressure on infrastructure.
Just because some streets and landmarks were renamed from Yoruba names and non-Yoruba names as well doesn't mean there's any xenophobia. The Local Governments have a right to rename any street or landmarks in Nigeria in their localities because it's within their purview.
In addition the "Second Pedro Bus" in Gbagada Phase 2, Lagos State, has ALWAYS been the official or original name of that Bus Stop till 2025 NOT Charly Boy which was just an unofficial OR informal name used because Charles Oputa lived in that rented duplex which was close to "Second Pedro Bus Stop." It was ONLY renamed officially as "Olamide Badoo Bus Stop" after Olamide Adedeji in 2025.
In conclusion, Charly Boy was just a tenant in that house who was eventually evicted by his landlady for owing rent from that duplex close to the Second Pedro Bus Stop now Olamide Badoo Bus Stop. He was NEVER a landlord in that house.
TruthHurts1: The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has quietly built a functioning state-like economy across the Lake Chad region, controlling farms and cattle business through a complex taxation and governance regime that rivals Somalia-style jihadi fiefdoms.
According to a report by The New Humanitarian news agency, ISWAP collects an estimated $191 million annually through a formalised system of levies on fishers, farmers, traders and migrant workers.
Originally a project of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), The New Humanitarian (formerly IRIN News) operated under the UN until January 1, 2015. On March 21, 2019, IRIN relaunched independently as The New Humanitarian.
The news agency, which said its report was based on painstaking investigations, stated that what the extremists make per year vastly outstrips the official tax intake of the Borno State government, which it said took in only about $18.4 million in 2024.
“This investigation explores the system of rule and revenue streams that ISWAP has built in what it refers to as the dawla — the so-called caliphate it has established in parts of northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.
“The report is based on in-depth interviews with fishers and traders that regularly visit ISWAP territory on a string of islands in Lake Chad, as well as former ISWAP officials and clerics who have left the group and quietly resettled in northern Nigeria,” the agency said.
The New Humanitarian report identified three primary types of revenue for ISWAP.
They are:
Zakat: a faith-based levy on livestock, netting around $3.7 million yearly.
Haraji: a tax for outsiders engaging in economic activity within ISWAP territory, often fishers and seasonal workers, collected through entry permits of roughly $13 each.
Darayib: a broader category including fees on trade, cattle, charcoal, and agriculture, imposed at checkpoints and markets.
“These payments,” the report said, “are enforced systematically with receipts, designated inspectors, and severe penalties for non-payment, allowing ISWAP to finance military campaigns, pay fighters and bills, and even offer rudimentary public services.
“ISWAP administers three broad categories of taxation: zakat, haraji and darayib. Each tax has a separate receipt that is issued after payment.
“ISWAP collects zakat from cattle-owning farmers worth roughly $3.7 million a year. The tax ranges from 3.3 per cent to 1 per cent, depending on herd size — the lowest rate levied on herds of more than 60 to 80 animals.
“ISWAP does not physically take the cattle but instead collects the cash equivalent — based on a pre-determined market value, eliminating the possibility of herders undervaluing their livestock.
“It also imposes a similar tax structure on sheep and goats but does collect the animals, reportedly for festive occasions and other internal uses within the group,” the report said.
While violent and ideologically driven, ISWAP has adopted pragmatic governance models. In many of its controlled areas, locals report being taxed for perceived “protection.”
“Before entry into ISWAP’s territory, every individual is required to pay a $13 fee. Those with cash pay immediately at the first checkpoint before being allowed to proceed. Those without the money are permitted to enter after making a pledge to pay following their business activities.
“In such cases, the group leader is held accountable for ensuring that all deferred payments are settled. Each person receives a permit or receipt, which serves as proof of payment and protects them from harassment by ISWAP’s inspection task force operating on the islands. With this permit, individuals are not disturbed. “Once inside, fishers are required to pay additional fees to be in allocated fishing areas. The amount depends on the size of the area requested and the fishing method they intend to use,” the report said.
Quoting fishers it interviewed, The New Humanitarian said: “These fees range from $13 to $196 and cover an entire fishing season, usually from February to June.
Before exiting the territory with their goods, each fisher or fish trader is charged a fishing tax of around $2.60 per 100-kilogram carton of fish. During a normal fishing season, ISWAP can generate around $156,000 from entry permits alone.”
Dogalmighty17: What did Benue use the loans for? Nothing is developed in that state
Benue State recently acquired surveillance drones for security purposes and that can be factored in. Besides this is cumulative debt profile of N129.82 billion from past Benue State government loans (plus interests on loans) till the current one.
