Nigeria raised $2.25 billion in a bond sale on Wednesday as markets largely shrugged off threats from U.S. President Donald Trump of potential military action in the country.

Literally, the international investing community gave Donald Trump the middle finger. While FG was looking to raise $2.25 billion, investor subscribed for over $12 billion thereby leading to 400% over subscription.

No matter what Trump does, foreign investors have absolute confidence in Nigeria.

JOHANNESBURG/LAGOS, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Nigeria raised $2.25 billion in a bond sale on Wednesday as markets largely shrugged off threats from U.S. President Donald Trump of potential military action in the country.

The sale reflects a sharp improvement in global borrowing conditions that is tempting some of the world's riskiest sovereigns back to international bond markets, with Congo Republic, Angola and Kenya also selling their high-yield debt to eager investors.

Nigeria's dual-tranche listing for ten-year and twenty-year bonds was oversubscribed, and priced at 8.625% and 9.125%, respectively, according to IRF, below the initial price expectations.

The firm demand came despite Trump's Sunday threat of military action in Nigeria if the country did not crack down on the killing of Christians.
Instead, investors are keen to place their cash in frontier countries like Nigeria that have spent years making painful fiscal reforms; President Bola Tinubu removed fuel subsidies and allowed the naira to devalue - moves that experts say were necessary but that have made life tougher for citizens.

JPMorgan data also showed that only four emerging market countries still have bond spreads above 1,000 basis points over U.S. Treasuries - the threshold that is considered prohibitively costly. The spread compression has lured frontier borrowers back to the market.

This rebound has allowed EM governments to sell a record amount of dollar-denominated debt this year, surpassing even the COVID-era.

EM governments have issued almost $240 bln of debt so far this year with more expected before the end of the year
For frontiers, it also shows years of painful reforms are starting to bear fruit. But it also underscored investors' hunt for yields and their increasing concerns over debt levels in countries once thought to be safer, such as the United States and Europe.

Congo Republic, which has one of the lowest credit ratings in Africa at CCC+, also sold its first Eurobond in nearly two decades on Wednesday.

Thys Louw, a portfolio manager at Ninety One, said African frontier borrowers had issued very little external debt since 2022, helping support spreads and investor demand.

"They've been so reliant on local debt markets, and this is true across Africa, that it now starts to make sense to start to diversify funding sources once again at these yield levels," he said.

Nations that could still issue from Africa include Egypt, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Benin, Louw said.

If you think he’s coming to invade Nigeria, you’re wrong. If Trump seeks regime change, fine this same thing happened when Tinubu replaced Goodluck Jonathan. Leaders can’t keep taking from the people and doing nothing; they want Nigerians’ support while failing to perform. If you want to join FFK to oppose Trump when he arrives, go ahead but whatever the reaction, Trump’s intervention has a cause, and you won’t stop him.

What I have told you is Trump’s intention and we shall resist him. America did not invade Nigeria to change Jonathan. Jonathan contest and lost. In 2027, Tinubu will be up for reelection. This still wouldn’t deter Trump from coming to help Nigeria tackle terrorism and banditry. I honestly don’t understand us Nigerians do we want the chaos happening in the northern part of the country to continue unchecked? We’ve shown, time and again, that we lack the capacity to deal with the situation effectively. So what’s all the noise about? Trump isn’t invading Nigeria; he’s stepping in to help fix the mess our political class created in the North.

If you believe Trump is suddenly interested in Nigeria because he wants to come and save Christians, then you’re way slower than I thought. Trump is simply coming to implement a regime change agenda.

They want a puppet president who will withdraw Nigeria from BRICS, give them a place to host their Military base in the Sahel, handover all our lithium and cobalt deposit to Elon Musk and friends, take in criminals from US prison, slowdown the energy independence we are pursuing and chase China out of Nigeria.

If they truly want to help in combating insecurity, they will offer the needed assistance to our government and not threaten military invasion.

The most important thing is how he performs. if he flops he will be kicked out asap and Trump will be vindicated.

The three horse race made his victory even sweeter because two Democrats were on the ballot and that should have given the Republican candidate the advantage. If Cuomo had respected himself and stayed off the race, Mamdani’s victory would have been overwhelming.

In Virginia, a Republican state that was won by Trump last year, Virginians voted out the Republican governor and in favour of the Democrats. Same thing happened in New Jersey where the Democrats won the governorship election. So, Americans are already rejecting Trump and his failed policies.
