The Super Eagles winger was immediately rushed to hospital after collapsing in the Super Eagles' final training session before their Afcon opener Samuel Kalu has been confirmed 'okay' and 'stabilised' after he collapsed during training, a day before the country’s Afcon opener against Burundi on Saturday. Kalu was reported to have fallen while trying to take a corner-kick in Friday’s training session in Alexandria, and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The 21-year-old underwent several medical examinations upon arrival in the hospital and he was said to have collapsed due to dehydration. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) media chief Demola Olajire confirmed the situation, with a relief message that the Bordeaux winger has been advised to drink more water. “I have been told Samuel Kalu has been stabilised. He was taken to hospital for tests and he is certified okay. He was dehydrated, they said. Told him he needs to be taking enough fluids,” Olaajire said. Kalu is one of the nine forwards in Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr’s squad and it remains to be seen if he would be available for their Group B opening game against the Swallows at the Alexandria Stadium. During the 2018-19 season, the pacy winger contributed three goals and two assists in his debut season with Bordeaux in the French Ligue 1. The Federal Government Friday called for increased surveillance at all entry points into Nigeria following the lingering Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Government directed all Port Health Service officials and other relevant agencies at such points of entry to heighten surveillance and ensure that all passengers coming into the country are screened. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Abdulaziz Abdullahi Mashi, on an inspection visit to Port Health facilities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, said that any suspected case must be presented for relevant test in line with the global practice on disease emergency control and prevention. Mashi who was accompanied by other top officials of the ministry and those of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said he wanted to ascertain the level of preparedness of Nigeria for the worst. He said: “More doctors, nurses and other health officials would be deployed to the port health services at the International Airport. Consumables required for day to day activities at the airport would also be adequately provided.” Mashi also met with the Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Titilayo Goncalves and hailed the state for its preparedness and surveillance system against Ebola. He said the Federal Ministry of Health and Lagos State Ministry of Health had been working together to forestall importation of any disease into the country and called for continuous collaboration. He said Lagos State is the entry point of most of the visitors to Nigeria hence there is need to heighten the surveillance system. Responding, Dr. Goncalves dismissed social media reports about an Ebola virus carrier in Nigeria. She said the person in question was tested and the result was negative. “I want to authoritatively tell you that the patient was tested and the result was negative, she is well and has been discharged, everybody should put his mind to rest; there is no Ebola in Lagos,” she said. The Lagos State Government on Friday said it has sacked 34 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, over cases of extortion and others in the last 18 months as two others are currently being investigated for allegedly extorting motorist in the state. Speaking on the issue at Alausa on Friday, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, stated that the present administration was committed to giving adequate support to LASTMA officials towards reducing travel time within the state, but would not condone any government official terrorising the citizens. “And that is why we are currently investigating two of our officers that allegedly harassed citizens who admitted driving against traffic. But the essence of LASTMA officers on the road was not to harass but to affirm the dictate of the road traffic law and be civil while enforcing it. “The claim is that the two officers allegedly extorted money from the driver. A petition has been written to the state government by a law firm stating how it happened. The officers have been referred to the agency that has power to discipline them for investigation,” he said. Hamzat said the LASTMA officers were currently before the State Disciplinary Management Board, assuring residents that none of the officers enforcing the laws had rights to harass them, while cautioning residents against depositing money for fines into officers’ personal accounts, as the only approved account must have Lagos State Government as the account holder. LASTMA General Manager, Wale Musa, disclosed that 34 officers were sacked for extortion in the last 18 months. Musa disclosed that while 24 were sacked last year, 10 were sacked between January and May 31, 2019, saying that the agency had decided to intensify its enforcement and keep watch on LASTMA officers. “Any officer found wanting will be disciplined accordingly. We have been doing it. This year, nothing less than 10 LASTMA officers were dismissed. Same last year, over 24 were dismissed. We have a system where we can discipline our staff. “Anyone that has an issue, should please take it up with us, we will deal with it accordingly. We have been seeing so many social media comments on the law, the truth is that the law is meant to be obeyed. “But we have a system where no LASTMA officer issues you a ticket. The LASTMA officer and yourself will face the law. It is not the right of the LASTMA officer to tell you that you are guilty, it is the court that decides. If members of the public can cooperate with us, we are ready and willing to ensure that the laws are obeyed and that our men work without fear or intimidation and no member of the public will be intimidated,” Musa said.
