Crime / Court Grants Abba Kyari Permission To Treat Diabetes, Others by ambimo(m): 9:45am On Mar 01, 2022 |
PunchngMar 1, 2022Read original Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, turned down the bail application filed by the detained former Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, Force Intelligence Bureau of the Nigeria Police Force, Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari. Kyari is in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency over an alleged involvement in illicit drug business. Delivering judgment in the bail application, which was moved by his counsel, Cynthia Ikenna, the judge said the application had been overtaken by the order of the court given on February 22, which permitted the NDLEA to detain Kyari for another 14 days. Justice Ekwo declined to grant the bail application. He said, “The only order I will make now is an order allowing the applicant access to any medical personnel of his choice. “The court will wait for the expiration of the duration of the February 22 order of the court.” Justice Ekwo adjourned till March 15, 2022, for the hearing of the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by Kyari. Moving the bail application earlier, Kyari’s counsel had prayed the court to admit her client to bail pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit he filed against the Federal Government. According to her, Kyari is hypertensive and diabetic and cannot be managed while in the custody of the NDLEA, adding that her client was being denied access to his personal doctor. She also argued that the offences for which her client was charged were liable to bail and that he would not jump bail if granted by the court. Responding, counsel for the Federal Government and Director, Legal Services, NDLEA, Joseph Sunday, informed the court that Kyari would interfere with the ongoing money laundering investigation against him and therefore, should be denied bail. He said the NDLEA had adequate medical facilities that would take care of his ailments. Kyari had on February 21 approached the court with an ex parte motion and originating summons seeking for bail and asking the court to enforce his fundamental human rights, which he alleged had been breached by his unlawful arrest and detention. He urged the court, in the main suit, to make an order directing the NDLEA to pay him N500m for allegedly infringing on his rights and to direct the agency to tender a public apology to him in some national dailies. Politics / Cameroonian Forces Entered Into Nigerian Territory, Seize Farmlands. by ambimo(m): 7:45pm On Feb 28, 2022 |
Cameroonian armed security operatives have encroached and seized farmlands from Nigerians in border communities, SaharaReporters learnt. Some residents of Kwaja, a border community in Adamawa State, have cried out, urging the Nigerian government to recover their land from the Cameroonian authorities. The residents have vehemently protested, saying they were denied access to their farmlands. Their protest message says, ‘Maintain ICJ position’, ‘We agreed to the 1932 Thompson Marchand Declaration’, We request for Protection from Nigerian Government’. The community alleged that Cameroonian officials on 14 February, 2022 erected demarcation signs in Kwaja, Kinga, Jugrma, Fajawa Girziya villages in the Mubi South Local Government Area, known for the cultivation of Irish potatoes. The spokesman for the community, Dr Ibrahim Kwaja said a letter requesting the Nigerian government to protect the rights and interest of the people has been addressed to the federal and state governments and Nigeria/Cameroon Mixed Commission on the boundary, stressing that the community was amalgamated as part of Northern protectorate in 1914. The letter agrees with the Thompson Marchand declaration which the International Court of Justice accepts as the correct instrument defining the boundary in the Kwaja area against the watershed line. The letter reads in part, “In respect of the ICJ judgement, we stand to argue that our people from generation have never in any case spread beyond Nigerian boundary. “We would not continue to watch our community tortured by confiscation of our shelter and farmlands.” Source: https://www.starnews.com.ng/cameroonian-forces-encroach-into-nigerian-territory-seize-farmalands-from-nigerians/

Google has said it is 'pausing' the ability of any Russian media to monetize any of it platforms. _“We’re actively monitoring new developments and will take further steps if necessary.”_ The move was revealed hours after YouTube announced it would block certain Russian media channels from monetizing their videos, among other restrictions. It follows similar moves by its YouTube subsidiary and Facebook. “In response to the war in Ukraine, we are pausing Google monetization of Russian state-funded media across our platforms,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re actively monitoring new developments and will take further steps if necessary.” The move was revealed hours after YouTube announced it would block certain Russian media channels from monetizing their videos, among other restrictions. “In light of extraordinary circumstances in Ukraine, we’re taking a number of actions,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. “Our teams have started to pause the ability for certain channels to monetize on YouTube, including RT’s YouTube channels globally,” the spokesperson said, referring to the Russian state-funded news outlet. YouTube channels earn money through ads that appear when users watch their videos. On Friday, Facebook also said it was banning Russian state media from running ads and monetizing through its platform. Nations around the globe issued broad sanctions against Russian businesses, banks and officials after Moscow invaded Ukraine on Thursday. “As always, our teams are continuing to monitor closely for new developments, including evaluating what any new sanctions and export controls may mean for YouTube,” the platform’s spokesperson said. In addition to restricting monetization, YouTube added it would limit recommendations to the same channels and is “continuing to actively surface authoritative news content” in Russia- and Ukraine Source: https://thenigerialawyer.com/google-pauses-russian-state-media-monetisation-across-platforms/

Foreign Affairs / Ukraine: Poland Refuses To Play World Cup Qualifiers Against Russia by ambimo(m): 11:58am On Feb 26, 2022 |
The Polish, Swedish and Czech Football Associations are opposed to playing World Cup qualifiers in March against the Russia national team in the nation after it sent troops into Ukraine this week. Russia and Poland are set to meet in Moscow on March 24 as part of a new UEFA World Cup qualifying playoff format. The winner of Russia vs Poland will face the winner of Sweden vs Czech Republic. "The Football Associations of Poland (PZPN), Sweden (SvFF) and Czech Republic (FACR) express their firm position that the playoff matches... should not be played in the territory of the Russian Federation," they said in a joint statement. The Swedish FA said in a separate statement: "Swedish football is appalled by what we now see unfolding in Ukraine. The situation is extremely serious and the only thing we can hope for is that this unjust invasion will end as soon as possible. Our thoughts are with all those affected in Ukraine. “We take part in the news reporting, as well as authorities and representatives of the government’s advice and recommendations. SvFF is also awaiting guidance from the international federations, UEFA and FIFA, on how Russia’s participation in international competitions will be handled. “However, our own assessment is that, as the situation now stands, it will be impossible to play a possible play-off match for the World Cup in Moscow against Russia on March 29.” The Czech Republic national team's Twitter account said: "The football associations of the Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden demand moving the possible World Cup play-off match from Russia. All three associations made this common decision during Thursday’s meeting and informed both FIFA and UEFA about this requirement." FIFA said it would monitor the situation and will provide updates in due course. "FIFA condemns the use of force by Russia in Ukraine and any type of violence to resolve conflicts. Violence is never a solution and FIFA calls on all parties to restore peace through constructive dialogue," the governing body said in a statement. The Russian city of St Petersburg is set to lose the Champions League final this year. UEFA have scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee on Friday to move the match. The Ukrainian FA have called for FIFA and UEFA to ban Russian clubs and the national team from taking part in any international competitions. Russia is also set to host the UEFA Super Cup in Kazan in August 2023. https://www.eurosport.com/football/world-cup-qualification-uefa/2022/poland-sweden-and-czech-republic-refuse-to-play-world-cup-qualifiers-against-russia-in-march_sto8815404/story.shtml

Politics / What's Your Sincere And Objective View On The Russia - Ukraine War? by ambimo(m): 10:03am On Feb 25, 2022 |
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has awakened the world to the possibility of a war that may affect global peace and stability. Some predictors of doom are even predicting a world war III. However, different people from different parts of the world have their own opinions and theories. Some believe Russia was wrong to have invaded Ukraine. That they ought to have respected the sovereignty of Ukraine as a nation and its right to choose who its allies should be. Others argue that Ukraine attempting to join NATO was an indirect declaration of war to the Russian state as that was breaching an agreement Russia had with Ukraine and NATO after the collapse of the USSR. And that America or any other NATO member for that matter would never allow Russia have a strong relationship with its neighbor (or neighbors as the case may be), not to even think of creating a military base there. In my opinion, I believe both sides( Russia and Ukraine) are right about their grieviances and should choose the path of least resistance. However, my analysis may be short of knowledge and facts. In you fair analysis, what's your take on this war? |
