mmmustapha: grin grin grin The transformation of a heir apparent (Edaiken)
to that of a king (Oba) was concretised and
solemnised. The whole city and environs in an
ecstasy, resonated with the sound of 'Oba ghato'

re-echoed with the sound of 'Ise'. A peep at the

It really sounds unbelievable abi? I would have thought so too, but my father kept the video tape and I have seen it.

dapachez: God bless you my sister,I didn't know that 5 junction is now part of benin ore road. I was shocked when I saw that. Akpapava that osunbor put a round about that was a death trap?
Iyaro is now part of benin ore road then I guesss fedearl government college through holy rosary through technical, medical and okhoro are all part of it as well. Fact reasonable progress has been made on the benin ore road and it is highly commendable but stick to the facts on ground
The location of Benin makes it a transit city. That means Federal roads do not necessarily terminate once they reach the city. Instead, federal roads are a continuum. Benin-Ore road for example, runs through Ugbowo, Uselu, yes 5 junction and hits Akpakpava, which is a continuum of Benin-Asaba road. Akpakpava continues to Ring road, then to Sapele road then continues as Benin- Sapele road onto Warri.

You get the picture?
Heck no! This is one strong factor as to why pple die in road accidents.
Besides praying to God for safe-journeys, we should also play our own role in being safe all through the journey by being on wide alert.

When we are asleep, we become unconcious of our immediate environments and the movements of our bodies are defined by the movement of the vehicle.

And when the mishap occurs, u'll see peoples head-butting dangerous parts of the vehicle. Some are even trown out of the window, and next thing is.... he's dead.

Now, I'm not saying you won't die or sustain injuries if u are awake but while u're u are awake and fully aware of the second-by-second events going on around you, you can easily position yourself for the least impact!

On several occasions when I don't get enough sleep during the night before my travel, I still muscle-out keeping awake all through the journey. It may appear difficult apparently, but I must stay awake!

My 2shillings.

Sleeping while travelling (particularly via road) is one dangerous habit everyone should consider quitting. In those days wjen I used to do emergency night travels, we left Lagos by 11pm for Benin. Obviously the driver was feeling sleepy because he kept stopping at intervals to smoke or drink something (those are the ones I observed o, because I was seriously sleeping.

Just before Okada and about 4am, the driver ran into a stationary truck that had broken down on the road. Now, I was sitting right behind the driver and that's suppossed to be a 'safe' spot. But I hit my face against the back of the driver's seat (because I was sleeping) and quickly came awake. Unaware of how I was looking and with blood running down my face, I managed to get another car to benin and walked into the emergency ward of University of Benin.

By this time, my face was all puffed up with damage to my nose. Another guy that was brought in from Delta State with similar injuries passed on like 2hours after he walked into the emergency ward with his family members. I eventually spent about a week in the hospital (just two weeks to my wedding) and still have a slightly shifted nasal structure.

So if you are the safety consious type, pray for safety before you start the journey, THEN KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!

donpata: U c, u can increase production by improving on the quality of bread, quality of packaging and good distribution network.
The most important thing is distribution network. U can produce quality bread but without a good distribution netwrk, its sham. Gone are the days customers rush to bakeries to buy bread; there are too many bakeries now so everyone is pursuing the vendors to their doorsteps. Anoda tin is the population around ur bakery and the class of the people. If they are mid class to low class, u may consider making other smaller brands that will sell faster thus increasing ur production scale. U cant imagine, i still produce N20 bread, and N30 bread. These two and d super D loaf actually take up much of the flour. So i can produce 8 bags at d beginning of the week and it wont still be sufficient to distribute to all my outside customers. The main disadvantage here is dat ur profit margin will b slim. But evn if na 1.5k per bag by say 7 bags, dats around 10k gain daily. Dats not sustainable though so am in d process of restructuring my productn.

1 thing ive noticd is dat some flour yield more dan odas. Its however still a mystry am tryin to figure out. The flour dat works for anoda bakery may not work well for anoda - but some flours are generally better than others. Some kick well and thus can increase yield, while oders simply dont. Again, u may use a particular flour nd after a while, it stops givn u results; maybe its 4rm d company. So u simply hav to switch flour. Among the ones are prefer are Golden Penny, Honey Well and Life.

By d way if u are in d UK, u can meet or consult a bakery there. U knw, dey take tym to do research tins better. They could provide u wit info on d ingredients 2 use, dia proportn nd so. Then u may b able to produce dat kind of Quality Agege Bread Osofia ate in London. However, Consultancy there may b 2 xpensive. U may consider getting a consultant, pay him btw 100-150k and direct him to liase with ur sister on how to overhaul the bakery completely. Besides, if u want 2 standardize it, u will need modern machines wch are quite xpensive - and of course, A gigantic Generator.

Now we are done with ansering ur questionss. Stop asking and Act. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
Instead of phasing out the low priced bread that's making you 10k daily (though with a lot of work) why don't you expand your production? That way, you keep making your 10k daily while you create another market for your more expensively priced bread. That's what I would do.
Business › Sustain/revive/resurrect Your Business by amdman(op): 8:00am On Apr 06, 2013
The day came when you finally decided you were going into that business. You drew up a business plan (or you didn’t because you didn’t know you were supposed to or you didn’t even know how to! huh). But you started that business anyway, your mind seized with the mental picture of revenue streams and income flow, fat account balances and an improved lifestyle grin grin grin

Fast forward to present day. You now feel you either foolishly entered the business, you were deceived into it or you entered with your eyes wide open but you now rue the day you made that decision to start. But you know what? HELP IS HERE! That business can still survive.

But first, I present to you our policy statement:

There is no legitimate business that cannot succeed. It is the structure that determines its success or failure.

On this thread, we will be providing useful information on what you can do to sustain/revive/resurrect your business.

bebe2: Pls were is ur family's bakery, how much have u rented it out for?
You can either lease your bakery for a fixed or relative rate.

Fixed rate is where the person pays you a specific sum monthly regardless of his/her profitability. This requires less supervision and input from you (you need to ensure the person is using your equipment well.

Relative rate is where you charge the person per bag of flour used daily. This is more or less the practice in Lagos. It is more profitable in the long term as you can have up to three people using the bakery at the same time. It however requires you to have someone on site to monitor the rate of production.

Another model you can use is the profit sharing model. Here you give the bakery to someone that will run it on profit sharing basis with or without a guaranteed percentage for you. GUARANTEED PACKAGE - your current profit + 20% (for example) is guaranteed to you monthly. The operator only earns something when this target is exceeded.
NO GUARANTEES -operator runs the business and you split the profit based on agreed percentages.

donpata: Like really, most of the people talking here have no experience in baking things. Evryone is running his mouth based on the Nigerian thing we know - Dishonesty. But to the question; Yes, u can run dat bakery even without coming over yourself. Some businesses however require that the owner has a significant idea of how the business operates. I mean, like the bakery, u shouldnt just be a novice in bread production, u must know a bit of wat nd wat 2 mix to get diz or dat. Then all u need to do is to direct ur sister based on the information u are recieving from her. U would only suspect foul play if u dnt trust her in the first place or if she's not acting to ur dictates.

that said, I also run a bakery and i must tell u dat in recent times, bread business profits have deminishd due to the serious hike in price of commodities. I also suffer by making abt 1.5k per bag which is not mearnt to be. Take for instance, a bag of flour sold for 5200 as at early last year; but now, it goes for 7200 (since GEJ hike d import duty 4 wheat flour) nd d prices of bread are not things u could just wake up a day nd change simply bcoz the cost of productn has risen. U nid some cooperation from other bakers so dat evrytin can be uniform. Now dats where ive been suffering coz the members of d bread union in my place aint cooperative. So u see d cycle continues. Anytime theres a loss u suffer it greatly cos d profit margin is so small.

D only way u can break even is if u specialize. The business is so competitive as there are too many pple now on the scene. U nid to consult to improve ur bread greatly so u can invite more distributors. Coz truly, d higher u produce, the much u gain. imagine producing 15 bags a day at a gain of 1200 per bag; dats sometin in nigeria today. bt if u can specialize and produce very standard bread, u could gain at least 3k per bag. With a good distribution network, imaging hw mch u will make by producing just 10bags a day.

contnd later
This is more or less what I said earlier. Let the desk top economists and investors talk, but it will not change the fact that profit margin in the business is slim. Therefore you have to constantly innovate to increase production and boost sales. Benin has rapidly expanded in the last few years, so if you know your onions, there are things you can do with that your bakery that will be just amazing. I have tried it in Lagos and the results are just unbelievable!!!

NOTE!

YOUR SISTER MAY NOT BE DEFRAUDING YOU. SHE MAY BE LIMITED BY HOW MUCH SHE KNOWS.
Business › Re: Advice needed : How do I successfully manage my bakery In Nigeria from the UK?. by amdman: 1:02pm On Apr 04, 2013
I think we need to take into cognizance the profit margin in bakery business generally, as profitability is based on volume.

Due to stiff competition, profit margins are generally slim… about N2000 to N3000 per bag (after production expenses). Cost of N11,000+ per bag of flour is not that unreasonable depending on the quality of bread you are making. What you now need to do is increase your volume of sales. If you keep doing one bag daily, you will never make a profit. You need to grow the business to start doing 5 bags daily, and to do that, you need to re-jig your marketing strategy. Where in Benin is the bakery located and how do you sell presently (do you supply retailers or they come to buy from you?)

On the other hand, you may want to lease the bakery to someone that will pay you a fixed/relative rate monthly.

It's possible to use the ones that are built like small trucks for distribution as against the usual keke.

You could then use insulation materials for the truck body. You can talk to refrigeration guys for that.
Car Talk › Re: What Are The Documents To Look Out For When Buying A Used Vehicle? by amdman: 11:54am On Mar 24, 2013
micklplus: Car Registration Documents-
Proof of Ownership
Probably- Original custom paper.

I think that's all really.
Standard documents issued in Lagos are proof of ownership, allocation of registration number and treasury receipt. You should collect these from the seller, including custom duty payment papers. To avoid going to prison if the car is eventually found to be a stolen vehicle, you can also do police report or court affidavit. These will prove that you bought the car in good faith.

My explorer is at 143k miles (after almost 2 years of Naija use) and am yet to change the transmission that came with it. Explorers are very resilient vehicles and will not fail you if you pay attention to them.

I put up the post below when I kept getting feedback from people that explorers were costly to maintain:

Your technician may even be the prob!

Many of them are not qualified to even handle refrigerator, not to talk of a modern car's cooling system.

I remember when I went to buy my explorer. After test-driving, I commented that the AC was not cooling and the dealer said it will be fixed before delivery. Car was delivered 2 days later and AC was good. Was driving about 2 months later when I perceived a smell and the AC stopped working. Used the car like that for another month and the compressor packed up one morning.

Eventually got a guy to check it out. His finding was that the AC was filled with fake gas and it has corrupted the entire system. He recommended a change of practically everything at about 66k. When he fixed it, he gave me 6months guarantee. 6 months have since come and gone and I have not called him, except to thank him for a job well done. My AC has 4 levels and on the hottest days in Lagos, I dont go beyond level 2!

Morale of the story? YOUR TECHNICIAN MATTERS!

Politics › Re: APC Rejects INEC's Call For Name Change by amdman: 6:30am On Mar 14, 2013
Lets reason this out properly.

The parties merging came up with APC and were using it to sing in the media without approaching INEC to register the name. Then some funny guy for whatever reason, makes a valid application to INEC to register a political party with the acronym APC. What should INEC do? Refuse the application because they have heard that another party with same acronym is being formed or treat the application that is first in time? In law, delay defeats equity and equity does not aid the indolent, but the vigilant!

Liken this to a business that decides not to register its name with CAC. Anyone can go ahead and register that name.

Chaz B... one of the best On-Air Personalities ever to come on any Naija's radio station. Of course there were times I did not agree with his perspective, but he was on point 98% of the time. He made entertainment go much further to impact lives. Like a teacher, he can never know how much and how far his influence reached, but I say this; that there is no Sharing Life Issues without Chaz B! If I were the Mgt of Inspiration FM, I would rest the programme and allow Wanawana to develop hers... because the shoes left by Chaz are just too big for her to fill. Its not about giving answers to issues, but about the godly wisdom and presence that permeated most of what came up on that show making Sharing Life Issues the number 1 programme on Naija's radio and thats obviously missing in Wana's presentation (including yesterday's).

I love you Chaz, and I believe your moving on is for your good and was well thought out. But it goes without saying that Lagos will miss you.

My team’s function is highly sensitive and exposes my employer (financial institution) to court cases, costs and reputational issues any time we mess up.

There is this guy that I supervise that is giving me grief. His output is poor and can be very unreliable. Every effort we have made to help him remains largely unfruitful. If it was my business, I would have since sacked him, but on the other hand there is the usual Nigerian sentiment of not having to negatively impact another person’s career, particularly as the guy lost his father a couple of months ago (his output was poor before then).

So what would you do if you were in my shoes?
