The Nigerian Army yesterday arraigned one of its generals, Brigadier-General Muraina Raji, former Commander, 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi before a Special Court Martial over the escape of two suspected members of Islamic sect, Boko Haram from the Brigade’s detention facilities. It was gathered that the detainees were arrested last year following an onslaught in Bauchi which led to loss of several lives and property. Special Court Martial Inaugurating the six-member Special Court Martial at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment yesterday, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Three Armoured Division of the army, Major-General Sunday Idoko said General Raji was indicted for complicity by a military investigation report, noting that the arraignment was in line with service regulations. Lt General OA Ihejirika, Chief of Army Staff. He said the constitutional role of the military requires the highest standard of discipline and professionalism which no officer wishing to succeed as a professional could afford to lack. According to him, “It is the duty of superiors to observe, correct and instantly deal with negligence or any misconduct on the part of subordinates. When there is any breach, it is expected that appropriate disciplinary measures are taken by commanders to forestall future occurrence.” More on http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/08/escape-of-boko-haram-suspects-army-general-docked/ Boko Haram backers in high places, |

This letter made me think, so I polled my less mechanically inclined friends and was surprised to find out how many people were in the dark on the subject of coolant: Hi Matthew, I was just reading your maintenance guide at About.com and I have a couple of questions about my car's coolant. I drive a 94 Volkwagen GTI, and when I bought it there seemed to be only water in the coolant bottle. Is it possible to have run on just water without overheating? Or is this more likely a mix of water and coolant? In your guide you state that using tap water is harmful for the engine so I'm just wondering what the previous owner had in the cooling system. If it is indeed just distilled water and no coolant in the cooling system, could that have caused harm? I think I will flush out the cooling system and put in the OEM recommended coolant, is there any further steps you'd advise? Thanks in advance for any help, Tim The difference between running the proper mix of coolant or just water is huge. It's not enough for your radiator to be wet on the inside, coolant has properties that perform a number of different functions while it swooshes through your engine. The most obvious difference is the freezing point, if you live in a cold climate you'll crack your engine block if you have only water in there. But coolant also has a much higher boiling point than water, and can therefore hold a lot more heat without boiling over. Wait, there's more. The compounds in coolant fight corrosion in the radiator and other components it comes in contact with. Running water alone isn't going to stop the process, and can lead to premature failure of parts of your cooling system. Worse, tap water has its own bag of unwanted chemicals, and running your car on that can cause even more corrosion of parts. The bottom line? You must run coolant in your system no matter where you live. This is non-negotiable. If you suspect your car is without coolant, it's a good time to do a flush and fill of the system. It's not worth taking chances. http://autorepair.about.com/b/2008/09/12/coolant-or-water.htm |

I think its just the guy cos I know the parents and they are not that into money. All their kids are grown up now and they just do charity stuff and the like. And to think that this guy used to insult those that live abroad and dont send money home, boasting that when he gets there, things are going to be different. Its been 3yrs since he got there and his folks are yet to smell the roses. |
Siena:It is the sibling that is confused whether to tell the dad. Would it be the right thing to do? doctokwus:His friends and some relatives in US and Naija are aware he is around, making it obvious that somehow sometime, his parents will eventually find out. And when that happens, all those that knew and kept the information from the parents are not going to look good. |
My friend's elder brother came from the US recently having been gone for like 3yrs. The brother went to Kaduna for 2 weeks, spent another week at Lokoja (where the parents reside) but did not go home. He has made his siblings promise not to tell his parents that he came to the country ostensibly because he doesn't have enough money to spend. Over the weekend he breezed into Lagos with his wife to spend a week in my friend's house. Now, my friend is in a fix whether to tell his dad because the dad will eventually find out and that would not augur well for thier present close relationship. What do you think? |
I drive a 2000 Ford Explorer (auto transmission) that I got about 3 months ago and am wondering when I should change the transmission oil. When I changed the engine oil recently, the mech said I didn't have to change the transmission oil or even top it up. There's no prob with the transmission, but am more of a preventive person so would want to know anything I can do to maintain my ride. Any ideas pls? |
"I want you to bear in mind the need to emphasize self-discipline and leadership by good example. Begin by drawing public attention to little but important everyday manifestations of indiscipline such as rushing into buses, driving on the wrong side of the road, littering the streets, parks and dwelling compounds, cheating, taking undue advantage of scarcity to inflate prices for quick monetary gains, constituting ourselves into public nuisances, walking without commitment and devoting little or no time to the upbringing of our children. Up to this moment there has been no formal declaration of war against indiscipline, it is my pleasure therefore to declare today a launching day for the war against indiscipline." - BRIGADIER TUNDE IDIAGBON; 23 March 1984 This is so apt! Given time, this would have redefined Nigeria and moved us closer to the Nigeria that should be. IBB why ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ? |
I weep at the reality of the Nigerian condition. My heart saddens each day I see a nation having so much doing so little. LAGOS IS FLOODED! Women, children, men washed off and drowned in the flood that overtook the city yesterday. Homes flooded, cars damaged, so much went awry on this day that the skies opened without let. While I will not embark on the futility of demanding why the Govt did not construct and desilt drains to avoid these frequent calamities, it troubles me that human beings were left to the mercy of the elements by a Govt that they once trusted and still fund. Where were the Police, Civil Defence, Army, NEMA, LASEMA and the plethora of agencies that’s it’s our Govt’s favourite past-time to inaugurate? In civilized climes, the security agencies are quickly deployed in search and rescue operations to ensure no life is lost. But here, we suffer the damages and count the cost thereafter, waiting for the next event in a zombie-like existence. And the one that galls me the most? We move on… like nothing happened. We are on our desks already doing the time. Our psyches so battered that nothing moves us anymore. Who will sound the rally call? Who will shout the battle cry? |
So a few tips for the Poster: 1. You guys should be friends only for now till at least you crest 18 or 21yrs, before any commitments. 2. You would have to take your books so seriously. I was motivated by my relationship to push beyond limits such that I am one of the greatest achievers in my family of 11. 3. It must remain a no-sex relationship. 4. Believe in God and believe in yourself. 5. And when you get to make that choice, stick with it, no matter what the future holds. All the best! |
I think most responses have been relatively unfair to the poster. He is not planning to abandon his books or get married immediately, but wants to know if there is hope of this relationship making it to marriage. And my answer is YES! I was 16 when I met my wife and she was 19. Both of us were yet to get into any Univ at the time. We grew so close that it was obvious to a lot of people that we were just right for each other. We remained friends till I was 19 and she was 22 and we had to make a decision whether the future held anything for us. We decided it wouldn't work cos of the age difference, the time it would take me to be fully independent, etc. The breakup lasted less than a week because we found we were just miserable without each other. We decided to stake our chances. Now this was a christian, no-sex relationship and that helped to a large extent to preserve what we had for each other for 12 years. I will be 29 in a few days and she was 32 two days ago and we have been married for 8 months! And I will tell you that deciding to wait for each other was the best choice we ever made, cos our marriage today is one the best things in our lives. My parents adore her (and they know about the age diff) and everything has been just so good. |
I drove into the Mobil station at Maryland Junction (the turn off from Ikorodu Rd) cos my guage was showing low fuel though it had not reached the reserve point, meaning I still had some fuel in the tank. I asked for a fill up and was perturbed at what I got. My car manual says my fuel tank capacity is 75L. I was shocked that at the time the meter was reading 80 litres, my tank was still not full. I just asked the attendant to stop at that point. I tried the station on another ocassion and had somewhat the same result. Am yet to find that station that satisifies my needs. |
I work in one of the international banks in Nigeria, and have access to mortgages at 10% interest P.A. with a maximum tenor of 20yrs. Presently, there is a 90% completed 2 No. 3 bedroom flat on offer for N4.5M in Benin and am wondering whether this will be a good buy. Your views pls. |
How much can you get me 2000 or 2001 Ford Explorer XLS or XLT? Body and interior should be very clean and should have a V6 Engine. |
I went carshopping on Saturday from leads generated from Nairaland and my experience was at best traumatic. Since dem say make we no call names of dealers, at least I will mention the cars. 1. Headed first to this popular dealer's place at Agidingbi, Lagos to check out some cars mentioned. General observation was that the used ones were much more battered than loudly proclaimed in here. In fact, there is this Mercedes ML 430 with DVD on headrest - the DVDs were already pulling out of the headrest, and the entire system including audio was not functioning - e be dey work before was their answer. Then the interior that looked so heavenly in pics was so dirty. Their response was that the car wash guys will work magic and so on. My thinking was that if you are selling a product, why not make it look its cleanest to make it more attractive? Lets forget the body o! Again, the ML was said to be 03/04, but on further checks, it was actually manufactured in1998, and that was a general observation in all cars checked. 2. I then went to check this Rover 75. The car was clean inside and out, but when I say make I test drive, the steering was vibrating in my hands and I was hearing lots of noise from the wheels. The guy started this story of how I would have to change the front shock absorbers at N6,000 but later checks at the parts shop put the price at N15,000. I think these guys just like to lie! 3. Next stop was a 2007 Ford Windstar. Because I really liked this car, I conducted some research online and discovered that Ford stopped production of the Windstar in 2003 and came out with Freestar afterwards, and so i was really wondering how this guy had a 2007 Windstar. When I got there, behold it was a 2002 model! 4. I eventually settled for this toks Ford Explorer 2000 that I found in a dealer's shop and made a deposit cos I didn't think it wise to carry so much money on my person on a weekend. They are supposed to deliver the car at my office this morning and collect the balance, but I got a call like 6am this morning from a guy who says he is the actual owner of the car that the price I paid is not what he asked the dealer to sell for. I just told him thats his stuff to sort out with the dealer and not me, cos I have a receipt showing that the car has been sold to me even though I have a balance to pay. I be lawyer so make dem no try me! My general impression of these dealers is that they are basically dishonest - that is they are not your friends that will watch your back. You do the watching and be on guard. Then their customer service level is sooooooooooooooo bad!!!!!!! Make I no talk too much! |
I went to check out one of these cars advertised yesterday. Pic posted made it a fantastic buy at the price offered. Poster had even done an analysis of the vehicle and I was like here we go. But check out what I saw when I got there! I still cannot believe the interior was same as that posted cos the real thing was battered in many places. There was no battery in the vehicle and they had to borrow this battery to start it and then it couldnt even start. I was like mehn!!! I think its just smart to go check out the car before parting with that cash. Pre-order or anything like that is not my thing. |

batuphil:maybe we can all work together on this for a win/win outcome. Am looking at buying a car between end of April and May. You can buy and use and sell to me before departure. But we have to agree on car type, price, etc beforehand. Respond if interested. |

@Osama Your patience is really praiseworthy. For all these dealers that like to refund, know that not everybody will collect their money without interest. N1M in the hands of sharks that charge 10% would be N1.5M in the months it has taken to resolve this. @German Go and do thanksgiving for the gentle people you keep crossing. Not everyone would take these things lying low. My 2 shots. |

That depends on whether the interest rate charge is flat or per annum. For flat, 19.99% of $800 is $159.92 For per annum, further divide the $159.92 by 12 months and you get $13.36 If your card is provided by a Bank, its more likely that you are charged per annum. |
