European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)How Chelsea Stars Celebrate Xmas In Their Homes by amedino(op):
Eden Hazard
In Belgium we celebrate Christmas on the
25th with all the family. Everyone is
together, cousins, uncles, aunts, brothers,
sisters. We have a Christmas tree, we call it
a sapin. There are just a few presents under
the tree. Before Christmas we each pick a
piece of paper out of a hat which will have
a family member's name on it. We then buy
a present for that person, so everybody
gives one present and everybody receives
one present. For food, we eat a traditional
meal called a raclette. You heat some cheese
with a special machine so it melts and then
you scrape off the melted cheese. We have
potatoes and dried meats with it. That's a
normal Belgian Christmas!
Mark Schwarzer
A traditional Australian Christmas for me
would involve hot weather and a barbecue,
but not on the beach because I'm from the
west. We all sit around the Christmas tree
in nothing but a pair of shorts because it's
so hot. We get our presents on Christmas
Eve, which is the German tradition. We
have dinner, clean up, open our presents
and then go out. In terms of what we eat, it
would usually be a roast. We used to have
our own ducks and geese so that's what we
would eat.
Fernando Torres
It's a family day, for some people Santa
comes on Christmas Eve, but for others it's
Christmas morning. We have a big dinner
on Christmas Eve and then another big
lunch on Christmas Day. What you eat really
depends on what part of Spain you come
from. In the north, where my wife's family
and my father's family are from, they just
eat seafood, so lots of fresh fish and things
like that. In Spain turkey isn't very popular
so we normally eat chicken after we've had
some cold starters. We love food in Spain
so that day is a big day for us, we eat too
much, non-stop from Christmas Eve all the
way through Christmas Day. We also enjoy
drinking red wine, white wine and
champagne. I have all my family coming
over for a week as it's hard for me to get
back there because of all the fixtures in
England. My brothers and all their kids will
come and we will celebrate Christmas, then
we celebrate New Year with my wife's
family.
Kevin De Bruyne
When I am able to be back home for
Christmas I spend it with my friends and
family. In my town in Belgium New Year is
celebrated more than Christmas, so there is
always a lot going on around that. A lot of
people in Belgium like fondue, so that,
along with vegetables, is very popular at
Christmas.
Marco van Ginkel
In Holland Christmas isn't as big as it is in
England or Germany, where you have all the
nice Christmas markets. A lot of people in
Holland go to Germany or England because
in those countries it's such a big event, but
a lot of things are similar. On Christmas
Day you have dinner with your family, so
it's always nice to be all together. The city
I'm from is very small, but it's close to
Utrecht. I've been to Winter Wonderland in
Hyde Park which I really enjoyed, I've
never been to a Christmas market like that
so it was a lot of fun for me.
Tomas Kalas
In the Czech Republic, like everywhere, it's
all about family. My parents are divorced so
I spend the 23 rd with my mother, 24 th
with my father and 25 th with all the
grandparents, so it's like I have three
Christmas Days. In my city, Olomouc, the
population is only 100,000, so compared to
London it's just like a tiny village, but in
the main square there are lots of decorations
and that sort of thing, so it's very festive, a
bit like Winter Wonderland. We have fish
on Christmas Day, which is the tradition.
Some people eat meat, although nobody has
turkey, it's not something we eat in Czech
Republic.
Cesar Azpilicueta
We have a big dinner on the evening of the
24 th with all the family, which is when we
receive our presents as well. The food we
eat is not what you would class as
traditional Christmas food, we don't really
eat turkey, like they do in England. We
usually have fish, which is very popular
where I come from in Spain. It's just a nice
time to spend with all your friends and
family.
Samuel Eto'o
In Cameroon, there is a gathering with all
the family on the 24 th and we celebrate in
the evening, the people drink beer, and on
the 25 th , they go to the church. Chicken is
the traditional food and most of the people
eat that. When you give presents depends,
some are to the family the night before, on
the 24 th , and some wait until the 6 th
January. The decorations are the same as in
England, a lot of lights on the streets.
Oscar
These days are very important for the
people in Brazil and they stay in their
houses and celebrate at home with their
family. They decorate the houses inside
with little lights and in the streets there are
big lights. The children find presents under
the bed in the morning on Christmas Day.
For food the people eat chicken or pork but
not beef and dessert is something like ice
cream, nothing special. This year my family
are with me in London.

Mikel
We go to church that day, come home to eat rice and chicken and drink plenty of bear.

EducationASUU Officially Suspends Strike by amedino(op): 10:30pm On Dec 17, 2013
ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos
Chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka told Channels
Television that the union decided to
suspend the strike after a marathon meeting
held in Minna, Niger State capital on
Monday.
In attendance at the meeting, which ran till
late in the evening, were all the ASUU
branch chairmen and secretaries, the
national executive members of the body,
coordinators and past leaders, including 56
members from 52 universities.
Dr. Ogbinaka said that, in line with
procedures, the different chapters of ASUU
would hold congress meetings on
Wednesday to inform members and
managements of the institutions of the latest
development.
“We expect the students to resume and
expect their members to go back to class
immediately after the congress meeting and
we expect the government to keep to the
terms of the Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU),” Dr. Ogninaka stated.
He said that the union and the government
would hold meetings in 2014 to look at gray
areas that may arise and come to a common
ground.
The Federal Government and ASUU had
reached a compromise during a negotiation
brokered by the President of the Nigerian
Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade
Abdulwaheed Omar on Wednesday,
December 11, which led to the signing of the
MoU.
Speaking to journalists after the agreement
with the government on Wednesday, the
National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa
Fagge, said that the union would consult
with its National Executive Council and
would intimate Nigerians of its decision on
the strike within one week, expressing
optimism that the outcome of the
consultation would be positive.
It was gathered that the MoU addressed all
the resolutions that the leadership of the
ASUU and the Federal Government agreed
to in their 13-hour meeting with President
Jonathan on November 4, as well as their
widely criticised fresh demands.
ASUU’s demands
ASUU’s demands include the upward
review of the retirement age for professors
from 65 to 70; adequate funding to
revitalise the university system; progressive
increase of budgetary allocations to the
education sector by 26%; transfer of
Federal Government property to
universities; setting up of research and
development units by the companies; and
renegotiation of the signed agreement.
The fresh demands include a non-
victimisation clause, provision and deposit
of N200 billion infrastructure revitalisation
funds in an account with the Central Bank
of Nigeria (CBN) details of disbursement of
the funds and payment of salary arrears
which has accrued to the teachers during the
strike.
The Wednesday agreement between the two
which is reportedly due for renegotiation in
2014 was reached barely 24 hours after the
Special Assistant to the President on Public
Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe presented a proof
of payment of N200 billion into an account
with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s university lecturers have been on
strike since July 1, 2013 to demand full
implementation of the 2009 agreement it
reached with the Federal Government on
conditions of service for university
lecturers, and funding of infrastructural
development in Nigerian universities.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Tottenham Sack Manager Andre Villas-boas by amedino(op): 12:34pm On Dec 16, 2013
Tottenham have sacked manager Andre
Villas-Boas in the wake of Sunday's 5-0
thrashing by Liverpool.
The defeat was the club's worst at White
Hart Lane in 16 years and left Spurs
seventh in the Premier League - eight
points behind leaders Arsenal.
Villas-Boas, 36, took over at Tottenham in
July 2012.
"The club can announce that agreement has
been reached with head coach Andre Villas-
Boas for the termination of his services,"
said a Spurs statement.
"The decision was by mutual consent and
in the interests of all parties."
Villas-Boas had come under increasing
pressure in recent weeks as his side
struggled to keep pace with the top four in
the league.
His side lost 6-0 to Manchester City on 24
November and, despite a draw against
Manchester United and wins at Fulham and
Sunderland, the defeat by Liverpool proved
the final straw for the Spurs hierarchy.

SportsWestbrom Sack Head Coach Steve Clark by amedino(op): 10:49pm On Dec 14, 2013
WEST Bromwich Albion have this evening
relieved Head Coach Steve Clarke of his
duties and placed him on gardening leave
with immediate effect.
This was the unanimous decision of the
Football Club's Board of Directors following
a disappointing performance throughout
2013.
Albion have won only seven of their 34
Barclays Premier League games during the
calendar year – a 20 per cent win
percentage yielding a total of only 31 points
– despite a substantial investment in the
first-team squad.
Joint-Assistant Head Coach Keith Downing
will assume control of first-team affairs
whilst the Club considers all available
options for a new Head Coach.
Sporting & Technical Director Richard
Garlick said: “We have reluctantly come to
the decision to relieve Steve of his duties
after very careful consideration.
“It has been well documented that we have
not had the rub of the green in certain
games this season but that does not cloud
the generally disappointing points return
during this calendar year, culminating in
today’s fourth-successive defeat at Cardiff.
“This Club's track record proves we do not
take such decisions lightly, having only
enforced a change in this position three
times in approximately 14 years.
“But with key games coming thick and fast,
we felt it was important we acted now to
give the Club the best possible chance of a
successful outcome this season.
“Our player wage bill is the highest in the
Club’s history and we feel we have built a
squad capable of being very competitive in
the Premier League.
"We now begin the search to find a new
Head Coach who will work within our
existing structure, which has been in place
for the past six years.”
Clarke’s assistant Kevin Keen has also been
placed on gardening leave.
"On behalf of the Board, I would like to
thank Steve and Kevin for their efforts
over the past 18 months,” added Garlick.
“We wish them and their families well for
the future.”
The Board will make no further comment
until a new Head Coach has been
appointed.

EventsDesmond Tutu Not Attending Mandela Funeral by amedino(op): 9:03pm On Dec 14, 2013
Spokesman says Tutu, a critic of the ANC ,
has not been given accreditation but
government insists he is on guest list .
South Africa ' s retired Archbishop Desmond
Tutu will not attend the state funeral
on Sunday for his friend and fellow Nobel
peace laureate and anti- apartheid hero
Nelson Mandela , his family spokesman has
said .
Roger Friedman said on Saturday that the
Anglican prelate was not accredited as a
member of the clergy for the event in
Qunu in Eastern Cape province, but
government officials insisted he was on the
guest list .
" The archbishop is not an accredited clergy
person for the event and will thus not be
attending, " Friedman said , citing
a statement made by Tutu' s daughter the
Reverend Mpho Tutu.
Mandela , who died last week at the age of
95 , had a close friendship with Tutu forged
in the struggle against apartheid .
The archbishop is not an accredited clergy
person for the event and will thus not be
attending.
Roger Friedman , Tutu spokesman
Tutu' s absence from the global icon' s final
farewell raises questions about the outspoken
clergyman ' s strained relationship with the
current South African government and ruling
ANC party.
Asked about Tutu ' s attendance , foreign
ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela told the
Reuters news agency: " Desmond Tutu is
definitely on the guest list " .
" I suspect the issue here is whether he
would have provided any official duties as a
clergy person . . . he may have taken
a decision not to attend the funeral , " he
added .
The controversy emerged as Mandela ' s body
was being flown to the Eastern Cape
province for Sunday ' s funeral , which will be
attended by Britain' s Prince Charles and US
civil rights activist Reverend Jessie Jackson,
among others .
At a mass memorial ceremony for Mandela
on Tuesday in Johannesburg , Tutu was not
initially on the speaker ' s list but he was
eventually invited to the podium and tried
to calm an unruly crowd that had booed
President Jacob Zuma .
Leading moral light
In his autobiography ' Long Walk to
Freedom, ' Mandela warmly described Tutu
as " a man who had inspired an entire nation
with his words and his courage , who had
revived the people' s hope during the darkest
of times . "
Since the end of apartheid in 1994 , Tutu,
82, has become a fierce critic of the ruling
Africa National Congress ( ANC ) , accusing it
of losing its way and straying from the ideal
of a " Rainbow Nation " of shared prosperity
that he and Mandela had envisaged .
Tutu has criticised Zuma ' s leadership and in
2004 , under then President Thabo Mbeki ,
he accused the ANC of
promoting " kowtowing " and said its black
economic empowerment ( BEE) policies
were helping only a small elite .
Mbeki gave a scathing response, saying
Tutu' s comments on economic empowerment
were " entirely false " and accusing him of
" empty rhetoric " .
Tutu remains one of the country ' s leading
moral lights and chaired the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission , the body set
up after the end of apartheid to examine
human rights abuses .
