That's so wrong.
When a person says in yoruba "Ola Olorun in mo n je o."
Or "Ola Iya to bi wa" -
They never mean wealth in these cases

I think ola in some contexts and ore ofe could be synonyms.
Mmmh... this is deep and wide! BTW, thanks for the correct spelling of that Yoruba grace word.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 9:43am On Feb 24, 2016
teechudleyy:
Yeah... Like Olaoluwa to mean means Gods grace. In the process of explaining... One might further confuse ppl.
No o, that's not it. It is Oriofe
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 9:42am On Feb 24, 2016
ProudOlodo:
Exactly. In names like 'olaoluwa', to translate it as 'wealth' defeats the meaning. I think while 'wealth' is often the most fitting translation, most names are intended to combine it with other meanings like 'honour', 'virtue', etc. Like you said, translation hardly captures it all smiley
cc: amicable09
Olaoluwa will simply mean wealthy God or God of wealth na. There is nothing lost in the translation.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 9:36am On Feb 24, 2016
ProudOlodo:
Ola doesn't mean 'wealth' all the time
Really!? What other meaning has Ola in English?

Bye joblanders, I'm off to my Yoruba lectures for the day.

Seems we're in for a naming ceremony today. Keep the names coming.
Hope they have Chisomola?
Lol. They can't have "Chi" in their names but they have Sola, I think.

Its not pet name o. Just short forms of D name. Like Chukwuebuka is Ebuka

The Bimbos are definitely Abimbola. But the Bolas could have been Adebola, etc
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Lol @ not pet name o.

Oh! Mehn! this is an exposé, I swear. You mean all the people I've called Bimbo are Abimbolas? lol.
I am learning about pet names today.*smiles

Do you guys know a popular soft drink brand got its name and success from the Yoruba name Ola?

History has it that in 1759, when the Brits landed on the shore of Lagos, in their bid to colonize the place now called Nigeria, one of major Lords (Lord Snowbelly) that travelled with them fell in love with the daughter of an Ifa priest called Adenike. Just before Snowbelly was about to go back to England, Adenike rushed into her father's shrine and brought out a black stuff which she claimed to a sweetener brought by Ifa when he landed on earth. She said the name of the flavor is called Koka kola (Get bent and get wealth), that flavour has been the secret flavour behind the success of the Coca-Cola soft drink.
Hahahaha. Officially, you are the funniest guy on NL! Lol

What is this!? Some myth or what? Lol. Where did you get this history from? It's too funny to be true.

No can. It is Bola is two words. In the end... Ola is d boss.

In Yoruba land. Naming is a beautiful thing. . . your name however simple it is has something to do with your roots. Some families bear Ola. Some bear Akin something. Just as the royals bear AdeSomething Its a family thing. In some homes everyone is Ola something... Cousins and all. Its fun and corny sometimes tho.
Wow! That's serious.
So this Ola name has its roots traceable to family something!? I want to know if there is a name like "My wealth has finished" "I was born and wealth disappeared" " Born without wealth"... Those kind of meanings, any name like that?

BTW I have noticed Yoruba naming ceremony is always a big affair and that's cool sha.

I'm starting to believe you're a tease. You remind me of a certain moniker here, punkyveer. tongue tongue

Good morning.
Lol. I sincerely do not want to comment on this thread again, been trying to bring every conversation to a close cos I've commented more than the OP of this thread.

This is by no means a challenge I'm shying away from... lol. Good morning.

As there are irresponsible men, so also are there irresponsible women.

But its so funny when women spend their entire time blaming the men for their own irresponsible acts.
We share in the blame too.

teechudleyy:
Lol. The translation isn't difficult. Its just DAT translation can't capture some things in a word.

I just learnt its actually Abimibaola while I was translating Abimibiola... Abimibaola - Meaning I was born and I met wealth. Whatever sha. There's birth and there's wealth. Cool!
Lol. Ehen!? This must be some wealth series o, So many names with Ola. When next I meet a person bearing ...Ola, or Ola..., I'll be sure to ask for the name in full.

Whenever I hear Ola, what comes to my mind is Olamide only. Abimbola for me is Bola in short form but now I see it can be Ola too.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 7:52am On Feb 24, 2016
I think I get it now, I just went back to my lesson note from last night and LastMumu said Abimbola means Born WITH wealth. Olamide, my wealth has come/arrived. Tee, just said Abisola is born into wealth.

I don't know whether to call the conjunctions abi preposition the object of confusion but it's clear now.

Howhuh?

You were quick to point out how irresponsible men are at the same time telling us not to take a woman as an object.

So am saying maybe the women want to be seen as an object....
Lol. So you agree men are becoming irresponsible, what do we do then so as to go back to the time of old, when men were men.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 7:43am On Feb 24, 2016
teechudleyy:
No o.

Born into wealth actually is Abisola.
Abimbola literally is they born me born wealth. My self and wealth... Born together.
Why is this particular name's translation difficult?
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by amicable09(f): 7:39am On Feb 24, 2016
qhutetomsel:
'Abimbola' means 'born into wealth' while 'olamide' means 'my wealth has come'.
Two different meanings entirely.

Yoruba is easy to learn if you are patient enough!
Teechudleyy said Abimbola is not born into wealth, that's Abisola.
Yoruba romance with wealth sha! lol. Even Hausas have not taken the matter like this into names. Lol
