Federal Lawmaker Condemns Rising Cases Of Cattle Rustling In Plateau — Sep 6, 2015 4:29 pm | Leave a comment A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Istifanus Gyang (PDP- Riyom/Barkin-Ladi) on Sunday condemned the rising cases of cattle rustling in Plateau. Gyang, in a statement in Jos, challenged security agencies, especially the Special Task Force (STF) maintaining peace in the state, to “act fast and check the trend.’’ The statement was in reaction to the attack on Dorowa-Babjue on Friday in which many cows belonging to herdsmen were stolen. “Cattle rustling is carried out by a criminal gang; the security forces and all concerned must move fast to apprehend the gangsters,” he said, Gyang said the incidence of cattle rustling was an indication that the notorious multi-ethnic syndicate on cattle theft was still alive and active in Plateau. He, however, cautioned against “flat assumptions” as to which group could be responsible, noting that experience had confirmed that membership of the gang cuts across all tribal and religious affiliation. “We all must unite to tackle the thieves. “ We should not be distracted by wrong impressions and insinuations that could open escape routes for these criminals,’’ he said. Gyang also advised the STF to work with traditional rulers, youth groups and cattle rearers toward checking the menace. NAN reports that cattle theft had often been blamed for the violence in most parts of Plateau North Senatorial District. Areas worst affected include Riyom, Barkin-ladi and Jos South Local Governments. (NAN) |
