wendyberry: Hausa is a major tribe in northern Nigeria. Although the main language spoken by people living in that part of the country is Hausa, other languages exist. The Hausa culture itself strikes many people as being interesting.
Marriage ceremony in Hausa land is a major highlight that would help many understand the culture and see its uniqueness when compared to the other tribes in Nigeria.
Hausa traditional marriage is based on Islamic rites. When compared to marriages in Igbo and Yoruba land, it is less expensive and dramatic. The processes of Hausa marriage could be broken into the following six processes:
1. Na gani ina
Like most marriages in Nigeria, the first step is seeking the consent of the parents of the bride after the groom or his family has made their choice. This is often referred to as ‘Na gani ina’ which means what I see. The parents of the bride on the other hand starts planning and make moves to investigate the family of the man that has shown interest in their daughter.
The research done by the family of the bride is to find out the key things considered important to them. Most families check the religious beliefs of the groom to be, family background, qualification, moral and ethics.
2. Friendship between the couple
Upon being satisfied with the findings made, the groom is then allowed to see the bride briefly. This is to help them know each other a little.
The family discourages them from having any form of physical contact or courting. If the bride to-be is in agreement with the whole marriage proposal, then the parents of the man make the move to formally ask for the girl’s hand in marriage.
Although, this method may be slightly different for all the tribes in that part of the country, it is presumed to be the most common.
3. Kanya Zance and Gaisuwais
The family of the groom goes to the bride’s family bearing gift items like Kolanut, sweets and other things. The groom’s family also provides what is called Kayan Zance. The items include fabrics, cosmetic products, perfumes, underwears, scarves, shoes and money. When these items are accepted and the negotiation for bride price begins, Gaisuwais is said to have taken place.
4. Rubu Dinar
The bride price is most times set to be low so that the blessings that will be gotten from the union may be more. The minimum payment is referred to as Rubu Dinar; this is a quarter kilogram of gold piece. The groom’s family can however pay more if they are financially buoyant.
5. Sadaki and Sarana
The term Sadaki means dowry, the moment it is paid, the bride belongs to the groom. After this, the wedding date is agreed upon by both families. Setting of the wedding date is called Sarana.
In most cases, the groom’s family makes provision for the house which the couple would live in. However, it is the responsibility of the bride’s family to furnish the house. Special attention is paid to the bride’s kitchen, living room and bedroom.
6. Fatihah, Kunshi and Walimah
The wedding day is called Fatihah; the families of the couple would be present while the bride herself would be made to go through Kunshi. During the wedding Fatihah which comes under the Daurin Aure, vows are being made with prayers made for the couple.
This is more or less a bridal shower which prepares the bride for her new role as a wife. The bride is being taught various things that may be considered helpful in her new home. While at it, various perfumes are being rubbed on the bride while Henna is applied on her hands and feet.
After these events, the wedding reception which is called Walimah takes place. Guests present at the wedding are being entertained with various foods and drinks. At the end of the day, the bride is being led to her husband’s house. This is referred to as Kai Amariya. The bride is being prayed for before she takes her leave.
OP you tried but some parts of your submission are misleading. There are areas I won't delve into but the following points must be noted: 1. Nagani ina SO instead of "Nagani ina.." which means 'I saw (the girl) and I am interested' not 'what I see' as you said.
3. Gaisuwa not Gaisuwais
5. Since Hausa weddings are essentially guided by Islam, payment of dowry alone NEVER makes a girl to belong to anyone. Dowry , Seegha (the verbal exchange of agreement between the groom or his representative and the bride's waliy or guardian), in presence of Witnesses (the invitees) must all be combined . This is what is erroneously called FATIHA as in your No. 6.
But where is the link to the original song and lyrics in Hausa? Who translated it?Now all those that usually curse Sahara reporters when they report what they don't ljke suddenly believe without questioning.
An2elect2: The Bible said it. I noticed that the people who go all out against Islam are themselves clowns. They are so quick to judge Muslims who are "outside the faith" but so annoyingly slow to rightly judge the wolves in their midst who are the real enemies of Christianity. So called Christians don't be stupid. The devil will not successfully deceive you if he does not disguise himself as a sheep. That's why we should test everything in the light of God's word. The people you should be weary of are the ones in Christendom with you! especially your pastors because those are the people that nurture you.
Stop judging by appearance and start judging rightly!
Thank God they are seeing the delusion they are plunged into. The OP is very objective. This is how one gradually sees the light.
I was in Zaria this afternoon and I came across these young riders ready to lead their entourage to the Emir's Palace for the durbar known as Hawan Daushe.
spinna: Many of us in the south so love to look down on the people of the North, but they are a people who understand power and i admire a lot of things about them.( Of course i dont like any ideology of North born to rule, i hate the Violent Criminal elements in Fulani herdsmen,) But I love these durbars because i love horses. The north have preserved their culture well.
Although Kano durbar is bigger i prefer Katsina durbar because they have much healthier horses.
I admire your objectivity. On my way to watch Zaria's elegant durbar this evening. Meanwhile others have lost their heritage, would rather go to drink and have wild parties.
DeutschJunge: islamically you don't do anything in this world without saying a prayer, I mean nothing. It could be going to the bathroom, eating or even putting on ur cloths or shoe. There's a prayer! So to answer your question yes, it is encouraged to keep the devil away from your potential offspring
“In the name of Allah, O Allah, keeps us away from the devil, and keep the devil away from that which You may grant us (ie. offspring).” About this, the Prophet said: “After that, if Allah decrees that they will have a child, the devil will never be able to harm that child”. -Bukhari
Even the Igbos living in the North know how empty and impracticable the threat was. To me, the so-called Arewa youths have no better sense than their ignorant ipob counterparts. I don't even waste time to read any story about these attention-seeking elements, no matter which elders support them.
I'm still surprised that ppl have time for that 'threat' from the attention seekers. I see them as being in same wagon with those Biafrans who 'wish' that all Igbos should relocate back to the east. Easier said than done.
