Al-Zamakhshari was punished due to the supplication of his mother against him. His story was mentioned by Ibn Khalikān in the book ‘Deaths of Eminent Men’. It was also narrated by Jamāl al-Dīn, the Copt, in his book ‘Information of the Narrators’. He said, “Al-Zamakhshari had one leg. He put a stick in place of his missing leg to assist him in walking.
When he entered Bagdad, he was asked by the scholar Ad-Dāmaghāni the reason his other leg was missing. He responded by saying, ‘This is the result of my mother’s supplication against me. When I was a youth, I grabbed a sparrow and tied a string to its leg. It tried to fly away and escape from me and I pulled the string; and thus, its leg came off with the string. When my mother saw this, she said, ‘May Allāh cut off your leg, as you have cut off the leg of this bird!’ When I became older, I travelled to seek knowledge in Bukhara (a city located in Uzbekistan). While travelling, my riding beast fell and crushed my leg, and my leg had to be amputated.’”
