TROOPS RESCUE FOUR KIDNAP VICTIMS AS OFFENSIVE INTENSIFIES AGAINST NOTORIOUS BANDIT KINGPIN, CRIMINAL NETWORKS IN KATSINA

Troops of the Nigerian Army conducting Operation CLEAN SWEEP III have recorded another major breakthrough in ongoing counter-banditry operations in Katsina State, rescuing another four kidnapped victims during sustained offensive operations targeting the notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Muhammadu Fulani and his criminal network.

On Tuesday, 16 June 2026, troops of 17 Brigade Strike Group/Quick Response Force supported by troops of 8 Division Special Forces launched a deliberate offensive to clear terrorists' hideouts in Fafu Village along the Matazu-Musawa axis. Prior to the ground assault, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA conducted Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions over the area, enabling troops to accurately identify and dominate the terrorists' enclave.

Troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them with overwhelming firepower. Unable to withstand the troops' aggressive offensive, the terrorists fled in disarray and abandoned their camp and captives. Subsequent exploitation of the camp led to the rescue of four abducted victims.

The rescued victims were immediately evacuated to Forward Operating Base Matazu where they were received by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General BP Koughna, who reassured them of their safety and reaffirmed the commitment of troops to restoring peace and security across the state. Sime of the victims, who sustained gunshot wounds inflicted by their abductors during captivity, received immediate medical attention and were subsequently moved to the Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina for expert medical management.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were abducted on 14 April 2026 from Sabon Sara along the Matazu-Karaduwa Road and were held in captivity alongside the late Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd) and his wife.

Troops remain on the trail of Kachalla Muhammadu Fulani and other criminal elements and will continue to sustain aggressive operations until all those responsible for acts of terror against innocent citizens are apprehended or neutralised. The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies remains committed to ensuring that terrorists and bandits have no safe haven.

GOVERNOR ODODO BRIEFS NSA ON ELIMINATION OF TERRORIST KINGPIN BATTIJO, HAILS TINUBU'S SECURITY LEADERSHIP

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Monday visited the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to formally brief him on the successful operation that led to the elimination of notorious terrorist and bandit kingpin, Kachalla Ibrahim Battijo, in Kogi State.

During the meeting, Governor Ododo gave a detailed account of the intelligence-driven operation that culminated in the neutralization of the criminal leader, describing it as a product of effective collaboration among federal security agencies, local security structures and the Kogi State Government.

The Governor disclosed that highly sophisticated intelligence assets were deployed to monitor the movements and activities of Battijo and his gang, leading to the discovery of their plot to attack and abduct students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination at Government Secondary School, Iluke, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

Acting swiftly on credible intelligence, the Kogi State Government relocated the students from a vulnerable location to the heart of Iluke town to guarantee their safety while they continued their examinations.

Despite the proactive intervention by government and security agencies, Battijo and his gang launched an attack on the community in a desperate bid to execute their criminal mission. However, troops of the Nigerian military, working in synergy with other security agencies, the Kogi State Vigilante Service and local hunters, successfully repelled the attack. In the fierce gun battle that followed, the notorious bandit kingpin was neutralized, while his criminal network suffered devastating losses.

The operation against the terrorist network did not end with the elimination of Battijo. In a follow-up clearance mission, troops of the Nigerian Army led by the Commander, 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Karim Sidi, successfully exhumed the remains of the slain terrorist leader for further examination and intelligence purposes.

The operation also led to the neutralization of additional members of Battijo's gang who had been hiding around the area following the initial encounter. Security forces had earlier recovered more than fifteen bodies of bandits during clearance operations, underscoring the scale of the victory recorded against the criminal group and confirming the operation as a comprehensive success.

Governor Ododo expressed profound appreciation to the National Security Adviser, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, for their support and for the gallantry displayed by officers and men deployed to Kogi State.

He particularly commended the courage, patriotism and sacrifice of personnel of the Kogi State Vigilante Service and the Hunters Group, whose local knowledge and commitment contributed significantly to the success of the operation.

The Governor also expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria's security architecture and providing the leadership required to confront terrorism, banditry and other security threats across the country.

According to the Governor, the successful elimination of Battijo and the sustained gains being recorded against criminal elements across the nation are clear indications that President Tinubu's security initiatives are yielding measurable results.

He called on Nigerians to continue supporting the President and the nation's security institutions, stressing that collective resolve remains essential to making terrorism, banditry and violent criminality relics of the past.

Governor Ododo assured the National Security Adviser that the elimination of Battijo has further strengthened public confidence in the state's security architecture and reinforced the determination of his administration to sustain the offensive against criminal elements.

"Kogi State will never be a safe haven for terrorists, bandits or any criminal group. We will continue to work with federal security agencies to protect our people and ensure that our territory is not used as a launching pad for attacks on neighbouring states," the Governor said.

Responding, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, described the elimination of Kachalla Battijo as a major breakthrough in Nigeria's fight against terrorism and banditry.

The NSA, who described Battijo as one of the most dangerous terrorists operating in the country, said his neutralization represents a major milestone in ongoing national efforts to restore peace and security across Nigeria.

He commended Governor Ododo for his commitment, courage and uncompromising resolve in tackling insecurity, noting that the feat demonstrates the effectiveness of strong collaboration between state governments and federal security institutions.

Mallam Ribadu emphasized the strategic importance of Kogi State to Nigeria's security architecture, given its unique position as a gateway state that shares boundaries with nine states and the Federal Capital Territory. He assured the Governor of the continued support of the Federal Government and security agencies in sustaining gains already recorded in the fight against criminality.

The National Security Adviser further noted that the successful operation reflects the effectiveness of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's security reforms and the growing synergy among security institutions under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Governor Ododo was accompanied on the visit by senior security officials and the State Security Adviser.

The successful elimination of Kachalla Battijo, the recovery of more than fifteen bandits' bodies, the subsequent recovery of the terrorist leader's remains, and the neutralization of additional members of his gang represent one of the most significant counter-terrorism successes recorded in recent times. The achievement underscores the effectiveness of the collaboration between the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Kogi State Government under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo in the ongoing effort to secure lives, protect communities and restore lasting peace across Nigeria.

OPERATION FANSAN YAMMA: TROOPS DESTROY TERRORIST HIDEOUTS AS OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS COMMENCE IN KATSINA STATE

Troops of Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA (JTF NW OPFY) have commenced a deliberate offensive operation, code-named Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, targeting terrorist and bandit elements operating within Matazu Local Government Area and adjoining communities in Katsina State.

The operation was launched following the unfortunate incident that led to the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted alongside his wife by suspected terrorists and bandits in the area. The operation is aimed at locating and neutralizing the perpetrators of the heinous act, dismantling criminal networks and restoring security within the affected communities.

Since the commencement of the operation on 14 June 2026, troops have conducted aggressive fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search operations and clearance missions across identified criminal hideouts and suspected terrorist enclaves within the Joint Operations Area (JOA).

In the course of the ongoing offensive, troops recorded notable successes in the Dikkawa Hills general area and surrounding communities. Troops conducted clearance operations on identified terrorist hideouts in Adua, Nasarawa and Karaduwa areas, where several criminal enclaves were searched and combed. During the operations, terrorists' life-support structures and logistics bases were discovered and destroyed, further degrading the criminals' ability to operate within the area.

The operation is being conducted in close collaboration with sister services, other security agencies and local stakeholders whose support continues to contribute significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at improving security within the state.

The Theatre Command JTF OPFY wishes to reassure the good people of Matazu Local Government Area and neighbouring communities that troops remain committed to protecting law-abiding citizens and denying terrorists and bandits freedom of action within the region.

Members of the public are encouraged to continue providing credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in tracking and apprehending terrorists and criminal elements. All information received will be treated with utmost confidentiality. Troops will continue to sustain pressure on criminal elements until the operational objectives are fully achieved.

Further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.

OPERATION HADIN KAI FRUSTRATES COORDINATED TERRORIST ATTACKS, RESCUES CIVILIANS, DISRUPTS INSURGENT LOGISTICS NETWORKS

The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has continued to consolidate its operational dominance across the North-East, recording significant successes against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists through a series of well-coordinated offensive and security operations conducted between 11 and 12 June 2026. The operations resulted in the rescue of abducted civilians, arrest of suspected terrorist collaborators and logistics suppliers, recovery of arms and operational stores, as well as the decisive defeat of multiple terrorist attempts to undermine security within the theatre.

In a major humanitarian and operational success, troops of Sector 2, while conducting fighting and perimeter clearance patrols around the Amuda general area on 11 June 2026, rescued three abducted children identified as Ali Usman (15), Umar Ibrahim Abubakar (15), and Fatima Abubakar (12). Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims escaped from terrorist enclaves at SAHA and CHINENE in the Mandara Mountains following sustained military offensives that have continued to degrade and dislocate insurgent strongholds across the region. After profiling and documentation, the children were safely reunited with community leaders in Ngoshe. Similarly, on 12 June 2026, troops of Sector 3 swiftly responded to a terrorist kidnapping attempt along the Damasak–Gubio Main Supply Route and successfully rescued six civilians abandoned by fleeing terrorists following aggressive troop pursuit around the Kareto area.

In further demonstrations of operational effectiveness, troops of 68 Battalion at Mallam Fatori thwarted an attempted terrorist reconnaissance mission after successfully ambushing suspected ISWAP scouts and recovering an AK-47 rifle with a loaded magazine containing 31 rounds of ammunition. Concurrently, troops of Sector 3 operating at Check Point 61 intercepted eleven suspects travelling in two civilian vehicles under suspicious circumstances. Preliminary investigations linked the individuals to attempts at recovering vehicles belonging to known terrorist logistics collaborators previously sighted supporting insurgent activities around Ali Sheriffti. In a related operation, troops of Sector 2 at Mandaragirau arrested a suspected terrorist logistics courier, Malahi Liman Muhammad, along the Mandaragirau–Sabon Gari axis. Recovered items included large quantities of herbicides, blankets, salt, food supplies, mobile phones, and other materials suspected to be intended for terrorist sustenance and operational support. The suspects are currently undergoing further investigation.

The resilience and combat superiority of OPHK troops were once again demonstrated in the early hours of 12 June 2026 when heavily armed Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists mounted a coordinated three-pronged attack against troops of Sector one at the COP Bridge location. The terrorists, operating with four gun trucks and several motorcycles, launched simultaneous assaults from the Wurge, Manawaji, and Kinuba axes. However, the attack was decisively repelled through the gallant resistance of troops, reinforced by timely artillery and mortar fire support. The terrorists were forced into a disorderly retreat, abandoning large quantities of combat equipment. Subsequent exploitation operations along their withdrawal route led to the recovery of three Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers, seven High Explosive Anti-Tank rounds, and other unexploded ordnance. Ground traces, including dragged bloodstains and body marks, indicated significant enemy casualties during the failed assault. Regrettably, one soldier sustained injuries from RPG fragments and is currently receiving medical attention.

These latest successes further underscore the effectiveness of OPHK’s ongoing offensive operations and intelligence-driven campaign aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, denying insurgents freedom of action, and protecting civilian populations. The cumulative impact of sustained ground offensives, aggressive patrols, precision engagements, and robust intelligence exploitation continues to weaken terrorist capabilities, disrupt their logistics architecture, and compel them into increasingly desperate and unsuccessful attacks. The Military High Command commends the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of the troops and reassures the public that OPHK remains firmly in control of the operational environment and resolute in its mission to achieve lasting peace, security, and stability across the North-East.

Major-General Rabe Abubakar: The Wounds We Share
By Gimba Kakanda
I have just read the statement by the Katsina State Government confirming the passing of Major-General Rabe Abubakar, rtd, a former military spokesman, while in captivity. Even though the statement says that “the deceased… died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” this does not erase the horror of the circumstances in which he spent his final days. What haunts us is not only the manner of his passing, but the tragedy of a life of service ending in the hands of criminals who have exploited the dysfunctions of our society.

What happened to the General is a tragedy of immeasurable dimension. To return from a career that required putting one’s life on the line for one’s country, only to become a captive of ragtag criminals, is a fate no patriot deserves. It is a cruel reminder that this weather of insecurity is one we all breathe and feel. It bears our names, our faces, our families, and the histories of service behind its victims.

There is no dignified way to avoid the truth that, as a nation and as a government, we have let down the General and many others who have met similar fates. This does not take away from the efforts I know were ongoing to secure his release or rescue, nor from the renewed operations and proactive steps being taken to confront these criminal networks. But grief must never be managed with denial. Something more radical, more coordinated, and more sustained must be done to break this chain of tragic events. Contrary to the assumptions of some, nobody is immune.

What happened to the General is a cautionary tale for all of us in government today. The General, who once served in one of the most protected institutions in the country, could never have imagined such an ending. That is why it remains baffling when anyone assumes that those in public office are insulated from the failures and fractures of the nation. The same roads, the same communities, the same future, and the same consequences await us all.

As a northerner, I am doubly troubled by the direction in which our region has been dragged. No honest person can claim ignorance of how we got here. If we are even more honest, we must admit that the untrained, abandoned, and hopeless children on our streets are being turned into cannon fodder for present and future dysfunctions. Even if banditry and terrorism are defeated, a vulnerable demographic left without education, discipline, opportunity, or hope will remain available for other invidious agendas against the Nigerian state.

This is the part that should frighten us most. We once spoke of building human capital. Today, too many of our people are trapped in the desperate arithmetic of survival.

The government has the primary and non-negotiable responsibility to protect lives and property. But no government policy, however well designed, can fully overcome a society that refuses to confront parental irresponsibility, the abandonment of children, hostility to education in some communities, and the casual normalisation of neglect. Security is not sustained by bullets alone. It is sustained by schools, families, values, livelihoods, justice, and a population civilised enough to reject the temptations of nihilism.

And yet, we cannot afford to lose hope. Despair is exactly what these criminals want to manufacture. They want citizens to stop believing in the possibility of order, to stop trusting the state, and to stop imagining a country that can still be rescued. We must refuse them that victory. We must mourn the dead, demand better from the living, and insist that the Nigerian state still has the duty and capacity to reclaim every inch of its authority.

May Allah forgive Major-General Rabe Abubakar, rtd, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and comfort his family. My condolences also go to all families who have lost loved ones to this madness. May their grief not be in vain, and may our country find the courage to end this tragedy.

OPERATION HADIN KAI RECORDS MAJOR SUCCESS AS HIGH-PROFILE ISWAP COMMANDERS SURRENDER UNDER SUSTAINED MILITARY PRESSURE

Operation HADIN KAI has recorded another significant success in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign following the surrender of two high-profile Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commanders to troops on 8 June 2026. The surrendered terrorists, identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, are currently in military custody and undergoing appropriate profiling and debriefing procedures.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the two individuals occupied strategic positions within the terrorist hierarchy and operated within the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad region. One of the surrendered commanders, Ismail Mohammed was a close associate of senior ISWAP Leader Baa Shuwa and possessed extensive knowledge of the group’s command structure and activities. The second individual, Abu Umar, was widely known within the terrorist network as a skilled explosives specialist with responsibilities linked to the fabrication and maintenance of vehicle borne improvised explosive devices and other combat-support equipment used by the terrorists. Interrogation further revealed that another high profile terrorist, Mohammed Khalifa, a member the ISWAP Shurah Council was neutralised during the joint operations by OPHK.

The surrender of the two commanders represents a major setback to the terrorist organisation, particularly given their experience, influence and technical expertise acquired over several years within the insurgent network. Their decision to flee and surrender further underscores the effectiveness of sustained offensive operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI, complemented by precision engagements conducted with the support of Allied Partners against terrorist enclaves across the Theatre. The combined pressure from these operations continues to degrade terrorist capabilities, weaken their operational networks, and compel increasing numbers of insurgents to surrender.

This development further demonstrates the growing desperation and declining morale within terrorist ranks as relentless military pressure continues to deny them freedom of action and safe havens. It also reinforces the effectiveness of ongoing efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist leadership structures and disrupting their operational capabilities. Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to maintaining relentless pressure on all terrorist elements. The military will continue to exploit all available opportunities to dismantle terrorist networks and restore lasting stability to affected communities.

1. The Kogi State Government has received with deep sadness the report of a terrorist attack on Iluke Community in Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area by criminal elements who disguised themselves in military uniforms in a desperate attempt to deceive residents and perpetrate their evil act.

2. The unfortunate attack led to the death of three members of the community. Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the people of Iluke Community, and the entire Bunu District over this painful loss.

3. Even as the State mourns the painful loss of three community members, Government commends the swift response, exceptional bravery, and gallantry of military personnel and local security forces whose intervention prevented the attackers from carrying out a mass abduction of students and inflicting further casualties on the community.

The Nigerian Air Force carried out a devastating strike on a terrorist convoy near Cross Kauwa and Ali Sherti in northern Borno State, targeting what appeared to be an insurgent staging area used for logistics and the planning of attacks.

The operation resulted in the destruction of multiple vehicles and the neutralization of several terrorists who were attempting to regroup within the Lake Chad axis.

The mission began on June 6 when an ISR platform established persistent surveillance over a suspected terrorist enclave at Cross Kauwa. The location exhibited significant signs of insurgent activity.

During the surveillance mission, operators positively identified approximately 12 vehicles hidden beneath tree cover and observed suspected terrorists moving between concealed positions in an apparent effort to evade aerial detection. The intelligence gathered confirmed the site's role as a key operational hub, prompting the subsequent airstrike.
A follow on airstrike engaged a concentration of vehicles inside the hideout. The munition scored direct hits on four vehicles and inflicted significant damage on the target area.

OWO CHURCH ATTACK VERDICT: EVIDENCE, CONTRADICTIONS AND THE ROAD TO APPEAL
Jimoh Ozovehe Abdullah
1• Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced 4 men: Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, and Abdulhaleem Idris (from Kogi), all to death by hanging on a nine-count terrorism charge filed by the DSS, in connection with the 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, where more than 40 worshippers died and several others were injured.
However, the court discharged and acquitted the fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho, after finding insufficient evidence linking him to the attack despite all five having been charged under the same nine counts, arrested by the same agency, and defended by the same counsel. This inconsistency alone in a capital punishment case throws a significant blow and faults the final verdict itself.
For clarity's sake, all the suspects pleaded not guilty to all charges and were remanded into the custody of the DSS, where they maintained their innocence throughout the trial.

2• Justice Nwite held that the prosecution proved its case "beyond reasonable doubt" relying on witness testimony, confessional statements, and digital forensic evidence. The trial featured 11 prosecution witnesses and 23 exhibits, including forensic reports and electronic communications.
But a closer examination of those pillars, starting with confessional statements reveals serious Questions;
(i) The Confessional Statements Were obtained during extended unlawful detention: Under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Involuntary or coerced confessions may be disregarded by the court unless proven to be voluntarily made.
One of the suspects (abdulmalik) who is a farmer and a plumber, alleged in court how DSS tortured him to force confession. As published by The Punch & The Cables in March 2026, AbdulMalik in his statement said "They carried me straight to where they hung me,” he alleged.
“They didn’t bring me down until I started urinating on my body. After that, they left me for a while and later took me to the cell.
“While I was there, they were punching me and pouring water on my face. They said they were punishing me because I was lying."
One officer later came and asked them to stop and said they should bring me down and confront me with evidence instead of making me shout.”
Read further here:
https://www.thecable.ng/owo-church-attack-suspect-alleges-dss-tortured-him-to-force-confession

(ii) Prolonged Unlawful detention without clear-cut offence or official trial: Another fellow from the suspects named Omeiza (age 25) an auxiliary nurse, narrated: "The night I was arrested, I used to wake up in the morning to read my book, when I woke up and was reading, I looked at the clock and it was 2:20....”.
during his statement as published by Channels March 2026, had also told the court that before August 18, 2022, when they were moved to Ondo State, the DSS while questioning him about his background, family, where he school and what he does, did not say anything to him relating to the Owo Catholic Church attack or membership of ISWAP or any other terror organisation, this is a critical fact, please check here: https://www.channelstv.com/2026/03/04/owo-church-attack-suspect-tells-court-how-dss-officers-nabbed-them/

For context, Omeiza and his elder brother were initially out of clue over what could have triggered their arrest as they weren't informed about anything regarding their offence, whether it was a civil case within the community or otherwise, nor were they the first youths to be taken out of the same town over political and religious differences with this same unjust detention before securing release.
These suspects were arrested in Kogi State and held for several months before the Owo attack was ever mentioned to them, suggesting the confessional statements were probably unofficial documents after the arrest or out of compelled prolonged detention and not voluntarily, which can be legally challenged as "trial within a trial".
Section 35 of the Nigerian constitution (under personal liberty), whether terrorism charges or otherwise, says no person shall be detained beyond 24 hours without trial, except where there is no court within 40 kilometres. If a detainee is detained without bail, they must be tried within two months from the date of arrest. If detained with bail, within three months. Here, the trial did not start from 2022 as many assumed, the arrest was, and these suspects were held for approximately four years before court processes, a gross constitutional violation that stained the entire proceedings.
As documented by the US department of State, “lengthy pre-trial detention is a serious problem in Nigeria, Detainees often wait years to gain access to a court which may eventually affect the quality of court proceedings.”
https://www.state.gov/reports/2023-country-reports-on-human-rights-practices/nigeria/

3• For those who followed all the proceedings, you may note that No Independent physical or software evidence connecting the accused to the Scene was ever presented, no physical weapons were recovered from the suspects, no video or photographic evidence, no ballistic or explosive devices linking to their digital prints, Non was physically presented by the prosecuting counsel. The defence counsel (A.A Muhammed) has severally demanded this critical aspect during the trial. You may want to visit him here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDPHUoC577g?si=JkYI69oSSA2do66e

The below are what the prosecuting legal team heavily relied upon as "forensic evidence"
(A) the cell-site data:
A DSS witness testified that mobile and cell site analysis placed the first to fourth defendants within the vicinity of the church at the time of the attack. Unfortunately, placing a phone within a broad geographic radius does not confirm physical presence at a precise location, nor does it confirm who was holding the phone. This has been consistently challenged in courts worldwide as inconclusive standalone evidence.
(B) On the terrorism identity: to begin with, the entire arguments on this was premised on “from the investigation” as repeatedly said by the lead prosecuting counsel, some of which are documents or written hearsays.
These 4 of men were charged for allegedly joining a terrorist group in 2021 (Al-Shabab) originally from East Africa, but there is no trace or evidence where Al-shabab claimed responsibility for the Owo attack. Secondly, until this minute the organisation's operational presence in Nigeria remains unverified, what was mentioned by the prosecuting counsel was prescribed as a cell-site location from Kogi without any concrete evidence as Al-Shabaab has no operational history in Kogi state, neither previous recruitment networks in Nigeria or West Africa at large.
Again, Premiere Christian News noted that Nigeria's Security Council and the Military leadership initially blamed ISWAP for the attack, even though ISWAP never also claimed responsibility either. Consequently, none of these terrorist organisations as argued by the defence counsel publicly acknowledged this attack or these suspects as their representatives or team members.
(C) On eye witnesses:
The prosecuting counsel argued that the second and fourth defendants were identified in court by eyewitnesses whose evidence was not discredited, the big question is how can eyewitness identification in such a weighty attack be relied upon as strong evidence, particularly when victims were emotionally disorganised during the minutes of the attack trail, and of course, the attackers were reportedly armed with masks on their faces.

4• Here is another conflicting segment on the entire case: The court discharged and acquitted the fifth Suspect, Mallam Momoh Otuho Abubakar, after finding insufficient evidence linking him to the attack. Meanwhile, all five were charged together, under the same nine counts, by the same prosecutor, defended by the same counsel, and reportedly formed part of the same alleged cell. If the prosecution's evidence was insufficient for one, the entire structure of the same accusations is faulty to serve as a verdict for all.
The prosecution's argument against Momoh Abubakar centred on POS transactions and the alleged fund distributions to his fellow suspect for their operations. The prosecuting counsel (Ayodeji Adedipe SAN) accused Momoh of receiving N800,000 in two installments weeks before the attack, which he insisted had been distributed to cell members, without evidence of legitimate business transactions. Yet he was acquitted!! Please make it make sense within the legal framework.
Again, if the tracking, intelligence gathering, and investigative foundation were so flawed that they yielded completely insufficient evidence against one co-defendant, the integrity of that same evidence used to sentence the other four to death is inherently compromised.

5• Further more, All the accused came from Kogi central, (Eika, under Okehi LGA) a state & district notably known for it peaceful inter-religious co-existence, where families frequently comprises Muslims and Christians, and where the two Religions mutually share community spaces for time immemorial, evidence can be coined from the presence of Catholic church direct opposite to the central mosque where all the 5 suspect hail from and perform Religious activities, yet there were never interreligious conflict or even incitement recorded before this investigation. The prosecuting team did not engage community witnesses, religious leaders (especially from the Christian circle), elders, or neighbours to testify or provide context on radicalisation character, anomalous movements, or related associations of the accused that might have transformed into interstate attack. In law, and as practiced globally, such character or alibi evidence is standard in capital trials, how then can this be absent before death sentences?
To assert that a deeply embedded local group suddenly radicalized into an unverified foreign terror affiliate, without a single local ripple, suspicious activity report, or community awareness, (until a far-distant state casualty) defies basic sociological indicators as regards this case.

6• To this end, i am forced on this article to cite the political context that may likely influence this legal tussle, some individual writings suggest a more critical perspective not to rush into executing 4 young men over what seems like a retrospective attempt by law enforcement agency linking arbitrarily detained individuals to a high-profile cold case in other to appease the government and give Nigerians the impression for being on top of terrorism cub (due to the current growing anxiety) or equally using it as a tool to send strong signal to the terrorist camps as many had already believed.
For justice to be truly served, both to the memory of the victims of the Owo massacre and to the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the accused, the Court of Appeal must undertake a comprehensive review of the conviction, rigorously reconcile all the conflicting legal segments in this case and demand that the prosecution present a substantial proof of alleged terrorism affiliation of this men, irrefutable forensic or eyewitness proof placing these specific men in Owo in the church on the day of the attack.
Yes, there is currently a high systemic environmental pressure where the state needed to demonstrate a "win" against terrorism, but not at the expense of 4 innocent men, unless rigorously proven guilty as many have argued.
In a case involving the punishment of death, the law must insist not merely on ambiguous documents or probability, but on proof beyond reasonable doubt.

This is not a call for impunity, It is a call for certainty.

FACT CHECK: Did Oyo school abductors really demand Sharia law?

* Tracing the origin of a viral claim linking bandits' demands to Sharia

By Rasheed Abubakar, Publisher, Muslim News Nigeria

The Nigerian social media space has been awash with claims that the bandits (terrorists) who abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State demanded the implementation of Shari'ah law as one of the conditions for the release of their victims.

The claim quickly generated widespread controversy, not only because of the gravity of the abduction itself, but also because it emerged at a time when discussions around the establishment of Sharia Courts of Appeal in parts of Southwest Nigeria have become increasingly prominent.

For years, Muslim groups and organisations in the region have advocated for the implementation of Sharia Courts of Appeal in accordance with provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, arguing that Muslims in the Southwest deserve the same constitutional rights already enjoyed by their counterparts in several northern states.

Against this backdrop, reports suggesting that bandits (terrorists) demanded Sharia law immediately attracted public attention and fueled heated debates.

The controversy was further amplified by a longstanding narrative that seeks to associate banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism with Islam despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of victims of such crimes, including Muslims themselves, have suffered at the hands of these criminal groups.

Bandits (terrorists) have attacked Muslim communities, kidnapped Muslim scholars, abducted Muslim schoolchildren, and killed countless Muslims across the country. Yet the islamophobes frequently describe them as representatives of Islam even when their actions directly contradict core Islamic teachings on justice, protection of innocent lives, and respect for human dignity.

As a result, many observers viewed the alleged demand for Sharia law as another attempt to link the activities of criminal gangs to Islam, the religion of peace ordained by Allah for mankind.

The claim was widely condemned across religious and political divides.

Notably, the Oyo Muslim community under the leadership of Alhaji Kunle Sanni on Friday, June 5, quickly distanced itself from the alleged demand, insisting that terrorists do not represent Islam and have no authority to speak on behalf of Muslims or Islamic law.

However, one crucial question remains:

*Did the abductors actually demand the implementation of Sharia law?*

The origin of the claim:

Muslim News Nigeria reviewed reports published by mainstream media organisations, online news platforms, social media discussions, and publicly available video recordings relating to the incident, starting from Thursday, June 4.

A clear pattern emerged.

Virtually all reports claiming that the abductors demanded Sharia law attributed the information, directly or indirectly, to remarks allegedly made by the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, during a legislative plenary.

Several reports stated that the kidnappers demanded a huge ransom, some quoting ₦1 billion, as well as the implementation of Shari’ah law in Oyo State, among other conditions.

However, many of those reports relied on phrases such as "sources said", "it was gathered", "reports say", or summaries attributed to the Speaker rather than direct quotations.

The next logical step was to verify exactly what the Speaker said.

*What did the Speaker say?*

The one minute, three seconds video recording of the plenary session in which Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin addressed the matter remains publicly available online.
The video opens with the Speaker saying:

_“… Everything that is necessary for them to bring these children and their teachers back. If it’s up to you, will you negotiate with terrorists? If terrorists asked for weapons, money and concessions of future laws of this land as part of their ransom, if you’re the governor, would you accept those ransom? Would you accept those people to be integrated into that community? We don’t know the details. So, please, let’s be sensitive. The more you negotiate with these people, the more you will be emboldening them.”_

Muslim News Nigeria carefully reviewed the recording.

In the available video, the Speaker did not specifically mention Sharia law. Instead, he referred to demands allegedly made by the abductors, including money, weapons, and what he described as: "Concessions of future laws of this land."

That phrase appears in the Speaker's publicly available remarks. At no point in the video reviewed by Muslim News Nigeria did the Speaker expressly state that the abductors demanded the implementation of Sharia law.

As of the time of this report on Saturday June 6, Muslim News Nigeria has not found any publicly available video, transcript, or official statement in which the Speaker directly used the words "Sharia law" while discussing the kidnappers' demands.

This raises an important question:

*How did "concessions of future laws" become widely reported as "implementation of Sharia law"?*

Understanding "concessions of future laws"

The phrase "concessions of future laws" is unusual and not a recognised legal term in Nigerian constitutional or legislative practice. In plain language, it could mean: "Demands that government change existing laws," "Demands for new laws to be enacted in the future", "Requests for legal or political concessions through legislation" or "Pressure to repeal certain laws" or " Pressure to introduce new legal frameworks", among others.

A concession generally means granting or yielding to a demand. Therefore, "concessions of future laws" could theoretically refer to several legislative or policy changes. However, the phrase does not automatically translate to Sharia law.

Without further clarification from the Speaker, security agencies, or official government documents, it would be inaccurate to conclude that "concessions of future laws" specifically meant the implementation of Sharia law. This distinction is crucial because journalism requires that conclusions be supported by evidence rather than assumptions.

*What the evidence shows:*

Based on available evidence reviewed by Muslim News Nigeria:

* The Speaker publicly referred to demands involving money, weapons, and "concessions of future laws."

* Muslim News Nigeria has not found a publicly available recording in which the Speaker explicitly mentioned Sharia law.

* Media reports linking the demands to Sharia law appear to be based on interpretations, secondary reports, or unattributed claims rather than a publicly available direct quotation.

* No official security agency statement reviewed by Muslim News Nigeria expressly confirms that Sharia law formed part of the abductors' demands.

*Why accuracy matters*

Words matter.

Claims linking terrorism and criminality to religious beliefs often have long lasting consequences. Once such narratives enter public discourse, they can persist for years even when the original evidence is weak, incomplete, or inaccurate.

If left uncorrected, future discussions may cite this incident as proof that bandits once demanded the implementation of Sharia law in Southwest Nigeria even if no verifiable evidence ultimately supports that conclusion.

For Muslim groups advocating constitutional recognition of Sharia Courts of Appeal, such narratives risk creating unnecessary suspicion around legitimate legal and constitutional conversations.

Whether intentionally or unintentionally, misinformation can become a stumbling block to informed public discourse. That is why clarity from public officials is essential. Given the widespread circulation of reports, it may be helpful for the Speaker or any relevant security or government agency to provide further clarification on the exact nature of the alleged demands communicated by the abductors.

Such clarification would help separate verified facts from assumptions, prevent further misinterpretation, and ensure that public debate is guided by evidence rather than speculation.

In matters as sensitive as religion, security, and public policy, accuracy is not merely desirable. It is a public responsibility.

*The bigger conversation*

Questions surrounding media framing, religion, security, and public perception have become increasingly important in an era of misinformation and viral narratives.

It is against this backdrop that Muslim News Nigeria has chosen the theme of media framing and faith representation as part of discussions at its 7th Anniversary Lecture.

The lecture will examine how religions, particularly Islam, are portrayed in the context of global crises, conflict, insecurity, and public discourse. The event holds on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

All three are residents of Rijana, Kaduna State.

HOW THEY WERE CAUGHT:

As soon as the video surfaced, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, ordered a forensic analysis to determine its origin and launched a manhunt.

Digital forensic tracking and actionable intelligence led operatives to the suspects' hideout in Runji Village, Zuba.

At about 3:22 am on May 25, police carried out a coordinated dawn raid.

Result: All three suspects arrested.

This is what proactive policing looks like. Not waiting for the crime to happen but tracking cr!m!nals from their own digital footprints.

The suspects filmed themselves with weapons, dressed in military gear, and thought they were untouchable.

They were wrong.

Well done to the FCT Police Command for swift, intelligence‑led action.

OPHK TROOPS FOIL TERRORIST ATTACK ON FOB MANDARAGIRAU, INFLICT LOSSES ON INSURGENTS

Troops of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mandaragirau under 25 Brigade of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, successfully contained a terrorist attack in the early hours of this morning despite adverse weather conditions and poor visibility occasioned by heavy rainstorms. The terrorists launched the attack at approximately 0300 hours and attempted to breach sections of the FOB under the extreme weather conditions.

Determined troops responded with a fierce counter-offensive, decisively frustrating further incursions and inflicting casualties on the attackers. The counter-assault underscores the resilience of the troops at FOB Mandaragirau, and reflects the courage and determination of our troops across the Theatre.

Regrettably, in the course of the battle, five gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the intense firefight and close-quarter engagement while some equipment were also affected by the firefight. Their sacrifice embodies the highest traditions of service, courage, and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation. Operation HADIN KAI honours their heroism and the bravery of all personnel who stood firm in the face of a determined but ultimately futile enemy assault. Three members of the CJTF also fell alongside troops while those wounded have been promptly airlifted by the Air Component Command and are currently in stable condition while receiving appropriate medicare.

Troops remain firmly in control of the FOB and continue to dominate the general area, while exploitation operations are ongoing for consolidation. These failed attacks further underscore the growing desperation of terrorist elements who continue to suffer devastating losses under sustained operational pressure. All necessary measures are being taken to protect communities and sustain relentless pressure with the deployment of additional troops and critical combat enablers throughout the North East Theatre.

You now see why Tinubu asked the question

Where are the cows? When everyone said its surely herdsmen that killed Mr Fasoranti daughter

Dont be in a rush to tag an action as this and that because of a stereotype until its proven
When you begin to profile crime/criminals by ethnicity you lose track of a whole spectrum of others who are involved in criminal activities. In as much as some of the perpetrators of kidnappings and banditry today are from a particular ethnic background it will be incorrect to attribute any reported case as being perpetrated by members of such without proper investigation.
Also, security is local and we all must remain vigilant and support those in authority to combat the scourge of insecurity ravaging the country

Adelabu sister kidnapped in Ibadan struck me for 2 reasons

1. Don't tell me bandits are approaching Ibadan

2. She took voluntary retirement from CBN civil service last year at the age of 42. While the trend across developed countries is to increase retirement age this ncreasing the base of the net contributors (workers) and reducing the base of net takers (pensioners), Nigeria seems to be going the other way. No reasonable country should have people retiring before 65.
