President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sorrow at the passing of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who passed away at 92.
The late Imam Abubakar shot into national and international prominence for hiding over 200 Christians in 2018, during the communal strife which ravaged Plateau State.
President Tinubu described the late Imam as an extraordinary religious leader, whose lifetime represented a striking testament to faith, courage and a staunch belief in the sacredness of human life.
"At such a time when tribal and religious tendencies seemed to overwhelm reason, Imam Abubakar stood firmly on the side of peace, benevolence and conscience," President Tinubu remarked.
"Mindless of the enormous risk to his own life, the noble cleric chose humanity over division, love as opposed to hatred and embrace rather than rejection. His heroic feat underlines the essence of true faith, resonating louder than sermons in a salient message to the world at large. My deepest anxiety about global stability isn’t even Donald Trump. The US President is just a symptom of unchecked power. What truly unsettles me is what becomes of Germany the moment it no longer finds reassurance in the idea of a rules-based world order.

Germany sits at the heart of Europe’s strategic dilemma. It is the continent’s economic powerhouse, yet it remains a strategic dependent. Since the end of the Second World War, it has maintained its post-war non-nuclear identity, and this was so because it had confidence that an American security umbrella would stay stable, predictable, and norm-respecting. That confidence is now eroding with Trump’s claim that he is governed by his morality, not international law.

Germany knows that without nuclear weapons and without command of a unified European army, it cannot deter an unraveling revisionist ally like the United States. A revisionist state seeks to change things in international politics. Germany, in realist terms, is a status quo power (a state that strives to preserve things as they are), and yet it is without the instruments required to defend the status quo. It is not because it cannot reverse this, but simply because it has had faith in international institutions, treaties, and moral suasion, and that is a strategic necessity imposed by history and sustained by external guarantees.

So, Germany may be non-nuclear, but it can reverse this overnight. It is home to some of the most sophisticated engineering traditions on the planet. A state that built advanced industrial machinery, aerospace technologies, and precision manufacturing at scale does not lack the capacity to reverse strategic decisions if its environment turns hostile or if it feels threatened. The actors on the international scene seem to be missing the fact that Germany’s non-nuclearity in today’s world is a choice. And choices change when fear replaces trust.

The US threat to colonise Greenland against the will of European allies is enough to generate strategic anxiety across Europe. That anxiety, it seems, cannot be managed through summits, statements, or appeals to shared values. It can only be resolved through power accumulation, alliance restructuring, or calculated accommodation. History offers no gentler options.

The US may bluff as it wishes, but it needs European states, particularly the UK, France, and Germany, on its side. Capturing Greenland at the risk of losing its European allies leaves it even more vulnerable than it seems to reveal. These states have functioned as offshore balancers—states that support a dominant power from a distance, helping to stabilise the system without direct control—for the United States. They extended its legitimacy, softened its dominance, and laundered its power through institutions such as NATO and the European Union. What made this role sustainable was simply belief: belief that American excesses were deviations, not doctrine. Now, Trump’s open dismissal of international law accelerates the end of that arrangement.

The true instability introduced by Trump is not territorial ambition. It is norm decay without replacement. When the system’s strongest actor abandons the language of rules without erecting a new, predictable hierarchy, fear spreads. Allies grow anxious. Rivals grow bold. Middle powers become transactional. The security dilemma tightens its grip.

And what we all don’t seem to understand is that a unipolar hegemon is impossible in the world as it is today. That ship has sailed since the early 2000s, when China rose during the US-led campaign against terror, with Russia bouncing back as well.

CP EDO ORDERS REORGANISATION OF EKPOMA DIVISION;
OPERATIVES UNCOVER SELF-KIDNAP, BUSH COMBING YIELDS ARREST OF 11 SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS, RECOVERY OF FIREARMS

The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that as part of ongoing security assessment and strategic repositioning in Ekpoma, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has ordered the reorganisation of the Ekpoma Division, and approved the posting of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze to assume office as the new DPO with immediate effect.

Following a report of a suspected kidnapping along Old INEC Road, Ekpoma, received at about noon on 12th January, 2026, the new DPO immediately swung into action and deployed operational resources to track the caller. Technical intelligence and field investigations led to the arrest of the suspect, which later revealed a case of self-kidnapping.

The suspect, one Obehi Odine ‘F’, aged 18, was arrested for staging her own kidnapping and demanding a ransom of Ten Million Naira (₦10,000,000). She has confessed to the crime, admitting that the incident was deliberately fabricated to extort money.

In a related operation in Ubiaja, the Command recorded another major operational success as Bush combing strategy yielded success. The Divisional Police Officer, Ubiaja personally led a coordinated bush-combing operation around Akwocha Camp and adjoining forest corridors, in collaboration with the Nigerian Military and the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC). A concealed forest enclave identified by the drone squadron through intelligence generated from air surveillance as a suspected kidnapping and logistics base, was stormed. This resulted in the arrest of eleven (11) male suspects believed to be members of an organized kidnapping syndicate.
Exhibits recovered include twenty-four (24) Dane guns, seventeen (17) cutlasses, three (3) battle axes, gun powder, torchlights, mobile phones, solar panels, assorted charms, one Daylong motorcycle, and the sum of ₦209,700.00 cash, among other exhibits.

The Commissioner of Police, strongly warns members of the public against engaging in false kidnapping reports and other deceptive acts, noting that such actions waste critical security resources, divert attention from genuine emergencies, create unnecessary panic, and undermine public confidence, hence anyone caught will be prosecuted accordingly. He further reiterates the Command’s resolve to sustain technology-driven policing, aggressive forest domination, and intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks across the state.

TROOPS DISMANTLE SUICIDE BOMBING NETWORK, INTERCEPT TERRORISTS’ LOGISTICS IN ADAMAWA

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recorded significant operational successes in Adamawa State, continuing intensified cordon-and-search operations targeting perpetrators and facilitators of the Gamboru Market Mosque suicide bombing.

Following sustained surveillance on identified locations, OPHK troops executed a coordinated cordon-and-search operation in the Yan Lemo area of Mubi South Local Government Area in the early hours of 5 January 2026. Eight suspects were apprehended, including two principal suspects believed to be key facilitators within the suicide bombing network.

A search of the suspects’ residence led to the recovery of cash, mobile phones, identification documents, ATM cards, jewellery, and other personal effects, which are currently undergoing forensic analysis to support ongoing investigations. During identification procedures, a suspect already in custody positively identified the two principal suspects as individuals who supplied materials used in preparing the Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Additional occupants of the residence were also linked to the network.

All suspects remain in military custody, undergoing detailed interrogation to facilitate further intelligence recovery before being transferred for continued investigation.

In a related development, OPHK troops intercepted a large consignment of suspected terrorists’ logistics in Mayo Nguli, Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State on 4 January 2026. The troops seized 45 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), with a total volume of approximately 1,125 litres, suspected to have been smuggled for terrorist use.

The suppliers reportedly fled upon sighting the troops, abandoning the petroleum products, which are now in military custody pending further action. The operation was conducted without incident, and no casualties were recorded.

These operations underscore OPHK’s unwavering resolve to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt logistics and supply chains, prevent future attacks, and bring all perpetrators and collaborators of terrorism to justice. Twenty abducted villagers rescued in Zamfara

All the 20 persons abducted from Dunfawa village in Moriki District of Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been rescued unharmed, security sources have confirmed.

The victims were abducted earlier on Saturday by armed bandits who stormed the village, sparking fear among residents of the area.

Sources told Zagazola that the victims were rescued at about 4:00 p.m. following sustained pressure mounted on the abductors by joint security patrol teams operating in the Moriki axis.

According to the sources, the rescue operation involved coordinated efforts by security forces deployed to the area, which forced the bandits to abandon their captives.

“All the 20 abducted persons were rescued safely and without injuries. They were taken to a government hospital for medical check-up and later debriefed before being reunited with their families,” the sources said.

They added that joint patrols had been intensified in the area to forestall further attacks and to facilitate possible rescue of other victims in nearby communities.

Residents of Dunfawa village expressed relief over the rescue, while calling for sustained security presence to prevent future abductions.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recorded another operational success following a well-coordinated offensive against terrorist elements in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, leading to the rescue of kidnapped civilians.

In the early hours of 4 January 2026, troops, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), engaged terrorists at a known crossing point along the Sojiri axis. During the encounter, five terrorists were neutralised without any casualty to own troops, underscoring the professionalism, precision, and combat effectiveness of the security forces.

Additionally, the troops successfully rescued three civilians who had been abducted by the terrorists. Items recovered during the operation included AK-47 rifles and other sundry materials.

TROOPS FOIL BANDITS’ MOVEMENT, NEUTRALIZE CRIMINALS AND ARREST LOGISTICS SUPPLIER IN COORDINATED OPERATIONS IN KOGI STATE

Troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army Lokoja on 3 January 2026 have recorded significant operational successes following coordinated fighting patrols and ambush operations conducted across parts of Kabba Bunu and Yagba West Local Government Areas of Kogi State.

Acting on credible intelligence on movement of bandits from Adankolo general area towards Agbadu Bunu in Kabba Bunu LGA, troops swiftly deployed and laid a deliberate ambush at bandit identified crossing point. The bandits subsequently ran into the troops’ ambush position and were engaged, forcing them to withdraw with indications of casualties as blood stains were observed during exploitation of the area. In the course of the encounter, troops neutralized two bandits and recovered one AK 47 rifle, one magazine, ninety nine rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one locally fabricated gun and eleven cartridges.

In a related development, further intelligence revealed movement of bandits around Saminaka village in Yagba West LGA. Troops, in conjunction with local vigilantes, conducted a fighting patrol to the village and adjoining forested areas. On arrival, the village was observed to have been deserted, prompting troops to dismount and exploit the surrounding forest and routes leading towards the Saminaka Sabo Rijiya road. Troops made contact with an unconfirmed number of bandits and engaged them, leading to their withdrawal through the forest. During subsequent exploitation, troops traced the withdrawal route and discovered one neutralized bandit,one AK 47 rifle and seventeen rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

During the same operation, troops also arrested a suspected bandit logistics supplier identified as Sunday Adedotun, from Odo Eri village in Yagba West LGA. The suspect was apprehended on a farmland within Saminaka village and claimed to assist farmers in transporting produce after harvest. Items discovered at the settlement included cartons of energy and soft drinks, bottled water and harvested farm produce. The suspect is currently in custody undergoing investigation.

The series of operations underscores the sustained pressure being mounted by troops against criminal elements within the area and their support networks.

The Commander 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi commended the troops for their professionalism, courage and timely response to credible intelligence, noting that their actions reflect the high level of commitment to duty. Troops recover cache of 12.7mm ammunition in Maiduguri

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recovered a large cache of high-calibre 12.7mm ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway general area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

Sources said that the recovery followed sustained, intelligence-led security operations and follow-up actions after recent cordon-and-search activities aimed at denying criminal and terrorist elements freedom of action.

Military sources said the discovery was made at about 3:00 p.m. on Friday, following a distress call by residents who reported suspicious metallic objects inside a drainage channel in the area.

Troops, alongside Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, immediately mobilised to the location to secure the environment and assess the situation.

A thorough search of the drainage channel led to the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including some live 12.7mm rounds, as well as power banks concealed within the channel.

Preliminary measures were taken to secure the site, while efforts were ongoing to drain water from the channel to determine whether additional dangerous items were hidden in the area.

Security sources said troops, in collaboration with the police and other security agencies, had continued to dominate the general area to safeguard residents, protect critical infrastructure and prevent any attempt by criminal or terrorist elements to retrieve the recovered items.

No casualties or unusual incidents were recorded during the operation, and the security situation in the area was described as calm, though vigilance remained high.

The recovery, according to OPHK, underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations, sustained military pressure and community cooperation, particularly in the aftermath of recent operations in which several suspected suicide bombers were neutralised or arrested.

Army arrests key coordinator of Maiduguri mosque bombing

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have identified and arrested Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, as the key coordinator of a suicide bombing network responsible for recent attacks and attempted attacks in the North-East.

The Army disclosed this in a statement on Friday, following intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted at the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on Dec. 31, 2025.

According to the statement, the operation led to the arrest of 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities, with subsequent investigations uncovering the structure, roles and operational linkages of the terror cell.

It said a suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, identified Shariff Umar as the ringleader who recruited, prepared and dispatched suicide bombers to assigned targets.

“Consistent and corroborated statements revealed that Shariff Umar coordinated logistics and the delivery of improvised explosive device (IED) components for suicide attacks,” the statement said.

The Army said investigations further established that Umar directly coordinated the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on Dec. 24, 2025, in which his accomplice, identified as Adamu, detonated a suicide vest and died in the process.

He was also linked to the foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, having personally handed over IED components to the would-be bomber in Maiduguri, the statement added.

The Army said further intelligence revealed the involvement of Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, while his stepdaughter, Amina, confirmed seeing the suspected bomber within their residence prior to the attack.

“These findings exposed the domestic and community-based concealment methods employed by terrorist facilitators,” it said.

It said all suspects remained in custody and were undergoing intensive investigations to dismantle the network, identify additional collaborators and recover any remaining explosives or logistics.

The Army stressed that the breakthrough underscored the importance of cooperation between security agencies and the civilian population, noting that terrorist networks often survive by hiding within communities.

It urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies, adding that sustained cooperation was critical to preventing attacks and restoring lasting peace in the region.
