The Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun State, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, said last Saturday that he should henceforth be addressed as “Emir of Iwoland,” and a gratuitous cyber fight has broken out between Yorubas and Hausa Muslims. But as you expend energies on this non-issue, bear this in mind: 1. “Emir” is NOT a Hausa word. It’s actually an English word by way of the Arabic “amir,” which simply means ruler or leader. So, in a literal linguistic sense, every Oba, Obi, Sarki, Sunno, Tor, Ochi, Olu, etc. is an “emir.” 2. Hausa people call their traditional rulers “Sarki,” not “Emir.” (Ironically, “Seriki,” the Yoruba domestication of Sarki, is a common Yoruba name, and even appears in titles like “seriki adinni of Yorubaland,” which means the leader of religion/Islam in Yorubaland). 3. It is unnatural for Hausa people to call their traditional rulers “emir”–or even the original Arabic “amir”–when they speak Hausa. (Read a column I wrote on this in the comment section below) 4. Interestingly, in their quotidian conversational encounters, Ilorin people call their “emir” Oba, even though the “Oba” traces ancestral descent from Fulani people. The market near the emir of Ilorin’s palace is called “oja oba,” which means “market of the oba” in Yoruba. 5. It was British colonialists who introduced the word “emir” and “sultan” to northern Nigerian royal lexical repertoire, but the words haven’t even been domesticated in the Hausa language, showing that the people aren’t quite enthused about them. The colonialists could have called Muslims obas in Yorubaland “emir” if they wanted to. 6. The roots of Islam in Iwo go back to several centuries. The town had sharia courts and was the center of Islamic scholarship several decades before many northern Muslim communities. One of Nigeria’s finest actress, Cha-cha Eke has acted in some of the best movies in the country. She can be termed an entertainment export. Today she is a role model to many aspiring young actors and youths. This onerous role she totally understands and always tries to be in the positive light unlike what is applicable in the industry. In one of her numerous social media handles, she took time to explain to the young ones what it means not to be cheap. She took time to define the term “cheap girl”. In her words she said that “A cheap girl is not the girl that accepts your proposal the first day. WHO IS A CHEAP GIRL? __________________________________ 1. A cheap gal is any gal who is living in a man’s house and the man has not paid her bride price, no wedding but she is living with him. __________________________________ 2. Boko Haram insurgents yesterday returned 104 out of the 110 girls abducted on 19th February, 2018. Five of them had reportedly died while one, Leah Sherubu, was not released. According to Khadija Grema, one of the freed girls, Leah was not released because she is a Christian and she refused to put on hijab or convert. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) condemns Boko Haram’s attempt to compel Leah to use hijab. Equally reprehensible is the attempt to force her to convert to Islam. We reiterate for the umpteenth time that Boko Haram’s doctrine is heretical and its methods stand in contradistinction to those of pristine Islam.https://etimes.com.ng/negotiate-release-of-christian-dapchi-girl-muslim-group-urges-buharis-government/ The Glorious Qur’an asserts that there is no compulsion in Islam (2:256). It says Allah himself could have made the whole mankind Muslims if He had wished (11:118). It forbids forceful conversion or punishment of non-Muslims by Muslims and limits the role of Muslims to admonitions alone (lasta alayhinm bimusaytirin 88: 21 – 24). Furthermore, it declares that each shall have the right to follow his or her religion (lakunm diinukunm wa liya diin 109:1 – 6). Once again we reject Boko Haram as an Islamic group. We urge the leadership and members of the group to re-examine its ideological base. Leah Sherubu must be set free because the basis for holding her after setting her schoolmates free is faulty and unIslamic. We invite the Federal Government (FG) to widen the scope of dialogue with Boko Haram by incorporating doctrinal issues. Islamic scholars should be involved in such discussions with the insurgents. This process is sine qua non for the deradicalisation of Boko Haram. Military defeat of Boko Haram alone amounts to a pyrrhic victory without ideological re-engineering. We charge (FG) to go back to the negotiation table in order to secure the release of the only Christian girl among the Dapchi girls who is being held back by the insurgents. Nigerians have been united in their prayers for the release of the Dapchi girls. FG should note that Boko Haram is not as daft as many people think. By withholding the Christian girl, they seek to divide Nigerians once again along religious lines. MURIC expresses solidarity with the parents of Leah Sherubu, the Christian girl in captivity. Our hearts are heavy with grief over her plight. We salute her courage. Shame on Boko Haram for oppressing a lone, vulnerable and helpless girl. Shame on all those who suppress freedom of worship.https://etimes.com.ng/negotiate-release-of-christian-dapchi-girl-muslim-group-urges-buharis-government/ We appeal to Nigerians to invoke special prayers in the mosques and churches for this Christian girl who had the courage to stare her oppressors in the face. We should also continue to pray for the remaining Chibok girls. As we round up, we repeat our exhortation to the Nigerian authorities: to set Leah Sherubu free is a task that must be done.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekwereamdu, has, once again, asked his constituents and supporters not to lose sleep over the Motion Ex-parte for assets forfeiture filed against him by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, noting that he could neither be intimidated nor silenced. He stated this on Sunday when the people of Mgbidi community, hometown of the dismissed former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent, paid him a solidarity visit over his latest travails in the hands of the Federal Government. https://etimes.com.ng/dont-lose-sleep-over-me-ekweremadu-tells-constituents/ Ekweremadu told his constituents from Awgu Local Government area of Enugu State, who were led by the traditional ruler, HRM, Igwe Pius Uzochukwu, that the latest allegations would fail like the previous ones as they were not founded on truth. He said: “I want to thank you for the show of solidarity. I have been inundated with calls, messages, and visits by concerned constituents and well-wishers within and outside the country. But, there is really nothing to worry about because the entire thing is a well-oiled propaganda on lies and doctored will that include fictitious properties, just to cow me. It is also about 2019 politics. However, I will not be cowed or relent in my efforts to serve you and the country. So, please sleep with your two eyes closed. Tell others too that there is nothing to worry about. “I am also happy that more people, courageous and well-meaning men and women are speaking up on the state of the nation. Rest assured that I will not refrain from speaking up in defence of democracy. As I said at the floor of the Senate a few weeks back, it is not about us, who are privileged, but about the country and future generations. So, I can’t afford to be intimidated or distracted. Like the previous attempts to silence me, this one too shall fail”. He assured the people of Mgbdidi of continued cordial relationship and development projects as he had nothing against them. Speaking on behalf of the community earlier, the community’s spokesperson, Hon. Patrick Uba, who dissociated the Mgbidi from their kinsman’s actions, condemned in totality the allegations raised against Senator Ekweremadu by the former Chief Judge, describing it as spurious and malicious. “The Mgbidi community, which former Justice Umezulike comes from has followed with concern the petitions written against you by our own son and we wish to categorically condemn it and dissociate ourselves from them. https://etimes.com.ng/dont-lose-sleep-over-me-ekweremadu-tells-constituents/ “Our findings reveal that the petition is spurious, malicious, and self-serving. We have cordial relations with you because you have represented us effectively, going by the number of projects you have attracted and our sons and daughters enjoying our scholarships and bursary awards, among others”, he added. Also speaking, a community leader, Chief Raymond Onyimba, decried what he termed the attitude of a brother trying to destroy another for selfish reasons and assured the Deputy President of the Senate of their continued prayers and support.

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has opened credit lines amounting to $800 million in 55 banks across Africa to facilitate the confirmation of letters of credit to support intra-African trade. Mr Obi Emekekwue, the bank’s Director and Global Head, Communications and Events Management Department, said that under the strategy launched in 2016, about $25 billion would be disbursed in support of intra-African trade during the five years ending in 2021. He explained that the bank’s President, Dr Benedict Oramah, disclosed the strategy at the signing of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement in Kigali. https://etimes.com.ng/afreximbank-opens-800m-credit-lines-for-55-banks/ Oramah said that under the strategy launched in 2016, about $25 billion would be disbursed in support of intra-African trade during the five years ending in 2021. He said the bank’s goal was to extend such lines to at least 500 banks in all African countries by 2021 in order to significantly reduce the cost of intra-African trade finance. According to him, the aim is to counter the constraints posed by country risks associated with the confirmation of such letters of credit. Oramah said that Afreximbank was also on the verge of launching an intra-African trade platform that would facilitate the clearing and settlement of intra-African trade transactions in African currencies. He said the platform would significantly reduce the use of hard currencies in the settlement of such trade. He said that 44 African countries had so far signed the Agreement Establishing the AfCFTA, while 43 countries signed the Kigali Declaration for the Launch of the AfCFTA. He said 25 countries had also signed the Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community relating to Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment.https://etimes.com.ng/afreximbank-opens-800m-credit-lines-for-55-banks/ Afreximbank is the foremost pan-African multilateral financial institution devoted to financing and promoting intra-and extra-African trade. The bank was established in October 1993 by African governments, African private and institutional investors and non-African investors. Since 1994, it has approved more than $51 billion in credit facilities for African businesses, including about $10.3 billion in 2016. Afreximbank had total assets of $11.7 billion as at Dec. 31, 2016 and it is rated BBB+ (GCR), Baa1 (Moody’s), and BBB- (Fitch). |
The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, made a historic outing to showcase some of Nigeria’s best films – 93 DAYS, THE BRIDGE AND ISOKEN – at Hollywood, Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood tourists from all over the world were held spellbound over the weekend by the spectacular ‘Nollywood In Hollywood’ event. The event started on Friday at Egyptian Theatre with a star-studded red carpet highlighted by the filmmakers and actors in the films on showcase – 93 DAYS, THE BRIDGE AND ISOKEN. The inaugural ‘Nollywood In Hollywood’ event was the biggest cultural showcase for Nigeria outside the country in decades, the organisers said. Nollywood artistes also used the platform to promote Nigeria talents and call for co-productions and technical cooperation between Nollywood and Hollywood. Mr Jeff Byrd, moderator for the opening night film and Chairman of the African-American Steering Committee of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), praised the ingenuity of Nollywood. “Nollywood seems so far away but there is some curiosity. This is a great event for Hollywood to know more about the Nigerian cinema. “The film tonight (93 DAYS) is an excellent film, a really good piece. “There are conversations to be had, for example how can we make it possible for people like Steve Gukas and good Nollywood filmmakers to be a part of the DGA,” Byrd said. Saturday’s screening was at the reputable Eileen Norris Theatre inside the University of Southern California (USC).SOME NOLLYWOOD ARTISTES AT ‘NOLLYWOOD IN HOLLYWOOD’ SHOWCASE IN HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES The Theatre, which had hosted films by reputable USC alumni including Ryan Coogler of the Black Panther, George Lucas, John Singleton, Bryan Singer, and Shonda Rhimes among others, was now playing host to Nigerian films. I'm surprised to see many Igbo folks, especially those who aren't from Anambra, expressing surprise on the posts made by Mbe Nwaniga recently on rich private Igbo men who are building roads for their communities and providing other amenities. It's not new in a place like Anambra State at all! As far back as the late 80s and 90s, Ọka-etiti people who are neighbors to Nnobi were competing in building roads around their neighborhoods. I remember growing up around there to see how when you say someone is very rich, you'd be asked, “ọ lụọna ilo?” or “kedụ ilo ọ lụụ?” (Has he built a road or which road has he built?) Ọka-etiti rich men competed among themselves in road constructions no matter the kilometer. Today, driving around Ọka-etiti, you'd see roads done with nylon coal tar — those designs that are silvery in color and more durable. They're not wide because there weren't as much car owners as now. Surprisingly, businessmen who had little or no education were the ones doing these feats back then. Around late 90s and early 2000s, Emeka Ọfọ embarked on massive road constructions in his Ọraifite town in Anambra too. By then, Onicha-Owere expressway was a mess and those who would want to access Ọnịcha or Ihiala or Owere from Nnewi, Ichi, Nnobi, etc would have to use Ọraifite to do so. Emeka Ọfọ built them solidly as at then with lots of bumps that you'd hardly speed for the safety of his people back home. He also put barricades to keep long trucks and heavy duties away from the roads. Around same time, Emma Okonkwọ (Bishop) embarked on massive road construction in his small town of Ichi, a neighboring town to Nnewi. Hardly would you drive around Ichi and see dusty roads. The road networks done by the man so beautified the small town that you'd think the place is a GRA if you are blinded to see the few mud and old houses around. Plus others. These days, many have taken a cue from those earlier examples and it's not a new development in Anambra State at all, as far as I'm concerned. Ifeanyị Ụba, Obi Jackson, Godwin Madụka etc are newcomers and have actually taken it a notch higher. Plus many other young men of their generation we are most grateful to such gestures and other philanthropic gestures. Take note: These men were never in government and never held political power or looted the public treasury. Such men are the reason why Anambra people are proud to come from that State and are quick to say “A bụ m onye Anambara”. Chijioke Ngobili |
Today the House of Representatives considered the report of the Adhoc Committee Investigating the Safety of Carbonated Drinks in Nigeria under my leadership. The House came up with the following recommendations: 1. That warning label be printed on Fanta and Sprite that the products are harmful when taken with Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) as from January 1, 2019. 2.That NAFDAC should compel producers/manufacturers to indicate all chemicals, acids, colorants and preservatives contained in their products on the packs or bottles no matter how negligible they are as from January 1, 2019. 3. That the regulating agencies be adequately funded by the government to enable them effectively monitor adulteration of all drinks produced and marketed in Nigeria. 4. That Expiry Date must be printed on all carbonated and non-carbonated drinks produced and marketed in Nigeria effective from January 1, 2019. 5. That standard review should be carried out biannually by the Regulating Agencies, particularly Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) partnering with NAFDAC. 6. That the House Committee on Health Services Place Special Attention to NAFDAC. https://etimes.com.ng/carbonated-drinks-femi-gbajabiamila-members-of-adhoc-committee-warn-manufacturers/

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced nearly $533 million in humanitarian assistance for the people of Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Nigeria, as well as countries in the Lake Chad region, where millions are facing life-threatening food insecurity and malnutrition as a result of ongoing conflict or prolonged drought. While humanitarian aid is truly life-saving, this assistance will not solve these crises, most of which are largely manmade. With this new funding from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, the United States is providing emergency food and nutrition assistance to help vulnerable populations, including tens of thousands of tons of in-kind food aid. Additionally, the funding supports safe drinking water programs, emergency health care and hygiene programs to treat and prevent the spread of disease, and reunification of families separated by conflict. This assistance also includes life-saving medical supplies, improved sanitation, and emergency shelter, and prioritizes programs that protect vulnerable groups. Of the newly announced funds, nearly $184 million is for affected populations from South Sudan, more than $110 million for affected populations from Ethiopia, more than $110 million for affected populations from Somalia, and more than $128 million for affected populations from Nigeria and countries in the Lake Chad region. In the Lake Chad region and South Sudan, years of conflict have led to acute food insecurity. In Somalia, ongoing violence has exacerbated the humanitarian impacts of severe and protracted drought. In Ethiopia, continued drought has worsened an already dire food security situation. A swift influx of U.S. assistance, along with that of other donors, is helping improve humanitarian conditions in all of these countries. But ultimately it is up to the leaders in these countries, particularly in South Sudan, to stop the violence and put the welfare of their citizens at the forefront of their actions. Millions will continue to be at risk as long as parties to these conflicts continue to engage in violence. The United States calls on all parties to allow aid workers safe and unhindered access to help communities in need. The United States is the largest donor of humanitarian assistance for these crises in Africa, providing nearly $3 billion since the beginning of Fiscal Year 2017. We commend the humanitarian contributions made by all donors, and encourage additional contributions to meet growing needs. Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, yesterday disclosed that Nigeria is the only member country in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that imports petrol and is currently the largest importer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the world. He disclosed this when he reportedly spoke at the 2018 Oloibiri Lecture Series (OLEF). The OLEF, organised annually by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Nigeria Council, in commemoration of the first oil well drilled in Nigeria at Oloibiri in Bayelsa State in 1956, brings together key industry players to chart the right path for the oil sector. Represented by the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Upstream in NNPC, Bello Rabiu. “As We Speak Today, Nigeria Is The Only OPEC Country That Imports Petrol And We Are The Largest Importer Of PMS In The World. We Actually Import One Million Tonnes Of PMS Every Month Into A Country That Produces Oil And Gas And Has Refinery. It Is A Shameful Thing, It Doesn’t Make Sense And That Is What We Are Trying To Address,” he was quoted Baru blamed the large scale of importation on the poor utilization of Nigeria’s refineries. https://etimes.com.ng/nigeria-the-only-member-country-in-the-opec-that-imports-petrol/ CHAIIII |

Brand new app Datally helps Android users understand and control their mobile data to get the most out of their data plans Google announced Datally, a smart and simple Android app that helps smartphone users understand, control and save mobile data. Datally works on all smartphones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher, and is available for download on the Google Play Store globally, today. Datally was developed to help solve one of the biggest concerns of smartphone users around the world, and especially in Nigeria - worries about data usage. During extensive user research around the world, we found that many smartphone users worry about running out of data, especially the new generation of internet users known as the ‘Next Billion Users.’ Not only are they constantly thinking about data balances, but they do not understand where their data is going, nor do they feel like they can control allocating data to the apps they really care about. The app will empower users to manage their data more effectively on their smartphones through four key features: ● Data Saver: Apps frequently use data in the background for updating content and information. Datally’s Data Saver feature lets users control data on an app-by-app basis, so that data only goes to apps they care about. ● Data Saver bubble: Once Data Saver is turned on, Datally’s Data Saver bubble will appear when a user goes into an app. Whenever that app uses data, the Data Saver bubble will show the current rate of data usage, and users can easily choose to block that app’s data use if things start to get out of control. The Data Saver bubble is like a speedometer for mobile data. ● Personalized alerts: Datally alerts users when apps start consuming a lot of data, and it allows them to see how much data they’ve used on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. ● Wi-Fi finder: There are times when users want to use more data than they have on their mobile plans, such as when they want to watch HD videos. Public Wi-Fi is an important access point for high-bandwidth connectivity. Datally’s Find Wi-Fi feature reveals the networks nearby, rated by the Datally community. Once connected, users can rate the Wi-Fi networks based on their own experience. Speaking at the launch of Datally in Lagos, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, Google Nigeria Country Director said, “For the last few years, our Next Billion Users team has been doing a lot of research on the ground in fast growing Internet countries like Nigeria, We have found that data is a major constraint for the the next billion users. Introducing Datally into the Nigerian smartphone market will help users understand how to control their mobile data better”. “Google tested Datally in the Philippines for most of 2017, and the insights from the product tests there shaped the final app. The user research showed that people testing the app saved up to 30% of their mobile data, depending on the way they used Datally,” he concluded. https://etimes.com.ng/datally-google-launches-app-to-reduce-high-mobile-data-usage-in-nigeria/

No Nigerian who has never lived outside Nigeria can define electricity supply beyond what he knows about NEPA. He hears the ideal of electricity supply being steady for months and years but that can never be the definition of electricity to him until he experiences and lives it. In brutal reality, a school is defined by its students. The infrastructures, staff strength or popularity could define it in the ideal but the final definition is in its product—the students! The Nigerian school of feminism means to me something closest to high voltage madness and bitterness seeking an intellectual front and capital to let out the steam of its long-stored disorder. That is what I know of feminism because that is what I see from many of the so-called feminists around me. I’d reconsider the day I am out of Nigeria and among non-Nigerian feminists to observe if what they say is the ideal is what they do. A word for those married women who dress indecently in the streets. A lot of married women dress indecently on the pretext that their husbands approve of it and that it keep them away from making advances towards other ladies who dress seductively. In fact, this is true as I have heard that some womanizing husband ask their wives to dress provocatively sexy so as to dissuade them from womanizing and they(wives) did. Personally, I do not blame you for doing so as you are determined to save your marriage, but, the fact remains that your provocative dressing in the streets wouldn’t deter him from womanizing. Listen! When he makes that business trip out of town, your provocative dressing doesn’t go with him. In his work place, your provocative dressing doesn’t go with him. Asking you to appear indecent in the streets while he is at work or else where is beyond comprehension. Truth be told, every man loves a decent wife outside but a LovePeddler in the bedroom and between the sheets – ask any man out there. Why is that of your husband different? Your husband’s insatiable appetite for women beside you is chiefly attitudinal. He isn’t man up enough to acknowledge that he can’t have all the women he ever sets his eyes on. He hasn’t told himself the home truth that he has to be contented with the wife he has. He hasn’t told himself the truth that he shouldn’t have anything amoral to do with young girls about his daughter’s age. He isn’t true to himself to acknowledge that you can’t remain the same shape you were after having those children for him. Come to think of it, those women he craves to have for sexual intercourse may not even be as good as you are in bed even in your present state. Here, experience speaks, you should know what am talking about. You husband needs help that your immoral dressing cannot provide. He needs an assistance that would make him change from the inside and not outside. He needs to man up to accept that he is an adult and no more that randy dandy he was when he quite younger. He needs to know how to differentiate between the working of his hormones and the logical thinking from his brain. That is to say, it is okay to get attracted to seductively dressed lady, but it is superbly manly to listen to that still and calm voice speaking to you from within. He needs to know that no matter how aroused a man can be, his arousal is always subject to rational thoughts emanating from his brain. Every man is a potential womanizer, but the difference between a practising womanizer and a none practising womanizer is the rationality in their thoughts process and the adherence to self-imposed discipline. Tell your man to imbibe Read more exciting stories https://etimes.com.ng/word-married-women-dress-indecently-streets/

Social media is a good thing! A lot can be done via social media and online and a lot of people have been catching up to this vast possibilities of this new media. Lately, a lady that had or do I say graduated with a first class degree was appealing for a job via Twitter ! She has been jobless for over two years and was contemplating learning tailoring work. It is alleged that she studied something close to physics or electronics but a science based course and a tech one indeed! This singular act has shown how we have gone down in education and also how the paradigm have shifted in the Nigerian ecosystem from certificate oriented to value adding labour space. Today, most employers wouldn’t give a heck about your paper certificates! If you have attended most interviews these days ,the most popular questions that owners and founders, start up firms or big firms would ask is ” what can you do if we employers you ” what would you be offering the firm of you are hired ” and ” how can you be of value to this firm if you are hired ” these are the type of questions that are being thrown at you irrespective of your degree or leaning. No CEO cares about your grades at that time but the growth of the organisation and he isn’t employing you based on sentiment but based in your capabilities as you must have advertised in your resume. I am not saying that grades are not important. We shouldn’t get it twisted, they are important and they are added value to you but as the narrative is changing ,people with better value proposition and hands on experience would have a better chance of securing a job than the dude with fancy grades. https://etimes.com.ng/first-class-theories-harsh-realities-graduate-nigerian-labour-space/

The way I view it, rich countries generally follow a progressive route to prosperity, labour-intensive agricultural production, a transition to export driven industrial products (with a concurrent transition to capital intensive agriculture so as to man the new industries) and finally a transition to world-beating services. Nigeria’s problem, it saw the clearly beaten path and sought to be a trailblazer on another one. Nigeria initially before the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities was an agricultural powerhouse, the world’s leading producer of cocoa, groundnuts and palm nuts. Then came the discovery of crude oil and the country went nuts! Nigeria’s crude oil problem counts as one of the examples of the famous “Dutch disease”. When you have a valuable resource that brings in a lot of foreign exchange, it in turn drives up the value of your currency. It could be a good thing in theory, for example a sensible government could use their now valuable currency to import products for an infrastructure boom and to aid industrialisation. What you don’t do is everything Nigerian leaders have done, give yourselves pay rises, steal what you can’t get legally, ignore governing, send your children abroad to safe https://etimes.com.ng/nigeria-poor-country/ |

The Nigerian telecommunication ecosystem can be said to have come of age, having over billions of dollars invested over the past decade. The industry attracted one of the highest foreign direct investments (FDI) Telecoms in Nigeria is said to be the second highest contributor to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) second to oil and gas. A robust sector, with highest mobile teledensity in Africa and amongst the top countries in the world according to World Telecommunication Organisation (WTO). The Nigerian telecommunication industry has evolved from a voice based industry in the early 2000s to a very sophisticated industry; having various sub sectors like data centres, mobile VAS providers, Infrastructure Firms and fibre optic providers and dealers with an ever evolving regulator. Though, it is no an easy sail for the industry, the industry has been bedeviled by a lot of irregularities and challenges such as uncompetitive practices like spectrum warehousing, high cost of spectrum , fringe high cost of broadband, last mile issues and low broadband penetration, coupled with a dearth of capacity and over dependence on expatriate. As the country’s telecommunication industry is evolving and getting sophisticated , the industry has demonstrated a clear departure from a voice based industry to a data centric one. Stakeholders are worried that the country’s higher institutions aren’t living up to this new paradigm. The Nigerian institution is still churning out half baked graduates, these sets of graduates become a burden to the industry. The industry stakeholders decried the cost of training these graduates and this trend has impacted negatively on their operational expenditure(CAPEX) and limiting their expansion and upgrading programs due to the high cost of training. On this note, The Telecoms Executive and Regulators Forum (TERF) which is the annual gathering of members of the Association of Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ATCON) gathered at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, Lagos to discuss ways to move the industry forward . Hosted by the current ATCON president ,Mr Teniola , the current ATCON president . The need to revamp the ICT space such as bringing scholarship to Nigerians by encouraging Nigerians to study abroad and bring this technical know-how to the country. This is in terms of capacity building, training and focus on STEM subjects are the main focus of discussion. The country must understand the need to position herself as a global player and telecom hub in Africa . The is a need to understudy countries like India has been called. One of the ICT stakeholders, this position was stated by Ike Nnamani, the CEO of Medallion. He lamented the poor quality of science graduates in the workplace. CROSS SECTION OF THE PANELISTS “There is an urgent need for the country to revisit what we do with our science graduates ,there should be a policy in this regard. The nation must be able to differentiate what skill sets that is needed and the government must address this part”, he said . The need to rejig and re evaluate the current education system has been called by the stakeholders. Nigerian education system is obsolete and not at par with the current trends in the global industry. The present educational system in the country is obsolete and outdated. A situation that has affected the graduates from the universities who are not capable to deliver in most cases. The form called for a strategic approach to the current education system . The Nigerian education must lay emphasis on STEM courses. On the issue of having a specialized university and financial institution that would cater for the need of the industry. The telecom executives called for a specialized bank that would focus on the peculiar needs of the industry, stating that the conventional banks do not understand the intricacies of the telecommunication ecosystem. On the issue of the universities, most of the stakeholders said that it is a duplicity. They stated that the current university should be upgraded and revamped to meet with the rising demands of the ever changing telecommunication industry and save capital flight. https://etimes.com.ng/terf-2017-industry-stakeholders-complain/ |
Cybercrime as of today is a menace to the society, costing countries over billions of Nigeria to curb and forestall. Nigeria and some other African countries are noted to to be hotbed of cybercrime, though stakeholders said that the proportion of cybercrime in the country has been overblown by the international community. In line with the anti corruption drive by the present adminstration, Nigeria First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari has lamented that the growing rate of cybercrime is capable of destroying the Nigerian youths and also destroying country’s National image. She made this remark at the 13th Nigerian International Secondary Schools Model United Nations (NISSMUN) conference, themed “Preventing Young People From Getting Involved In CyberCrime.” Mrs. Buhari who was represented by Mrs Pauline Tallen, former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, however called on parents and teachers to monitor online activities of the youths to bring about an end to the growing menace. “Today, many young people have taken advantage of this opportunity and establish very successful businesses and become charming example of enterprise. There are many others that have abuse this opportunity and turn them into cybercrime,” she said. “There is need for this conference to discuss this issue extensively and suggest solution that will result to the reversal of this trend as this impact goes beyond destruction of youths but also to our national image. “I therefore call on parents and teachers to be watchful of the online activities of young people and behaviour as they seem detrimental to our social well-being,” she added. In line with the first lady, Ambassador of Switzerland, Mr Eric Mayoraz noted that the cybercrime menace is an issue that affects every country with billions of dollars cost implications. “We live in a world where the internet permeates every facet of our daily lives, particularly the tech-savvy younger generations, largely due to advances in science and digital technology as well as global telecommunication infrastructure,” he said. “The proliferation of cybercrime has naturally had a negative impact on Nigeria, and further addressing the menace will require both preventive measures to avoid youths’ involvement in cybercrime and to ensure protection from cyber attack,” he added. A 2011 World Bank Survey revealed that Nigeria along with Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa were listed among top 10 countries in the world with a high level of cybercrime prevalence. https://etimes.com.ng/aisha-buhari-advises-on-cybercrime/ |
Be specific..which tribe are you from.and what state are you residing....I am Igbo in Lagos and I can relate with some stuff here maxti: |
Whybdwell in past we can have this revisited...enough of this mary go round TheKingdom: |
I don't like all these drama of paying Peter by robbing Paul , it doesn't add up and it will never add up. It makes Peter indolent and lazy. That's what we see in Nigeria. The status quo ain't working and it won't work, you are free to term this a doomsday prophesy but the truth is that like Nostradamus, I am saying what is feasible and the only feasible thing here is logicality and commonsensical approach to the economic quagmire we have found ourselves toady as a nation AKA sleeping giant. The simple approach ,though, it requires political balls or scrotum is collapse all the states and make them region. Let these region of like minds go and form economic blocks. We can say the Yoruba of South West and theor kiths and kin in kwarra , Kogi to form oduduwa region for economic growth and betterment , so is the other tribes like Igbo and hausa. This would bring cohesion and developments. Regions will complete and comparative advantage will set in. These region have the right to have their anthem, coat of arms, school systems , economic system, be it capitalism, mixed economy or even communication...each region will have the right to chart their course with 80% autonomy. They can have their police but not army, they would use the Nigerian passport and that's where all it ends. A particular amount would be sent to the center to use for the overheads of the army, immigration and customs that's all. The center would be made unattractive and rotational amongst the region. The centre wouldn't take crucial decision like international loans, international peace keeping engagements without the tacit approach band approval of the regions. The regions should be allowed to handle electricity, infrastructure, education and even International bileteral relations be it in trade or environment but not to keep army. Each region must have a quota of reserves of oersonnel that would be in forces and this must be equal. Let the regions worry about how to manage their resources. A region like Central belt might look at agriculture and add value and be competitive, while a region like south west can key into the existing market and try and attract others to invest in their region...this would make South west a business hub while middle belt an agro based hub, the east can look at trades and industry and fashion it like Dubai or even Shanghai China. It's all about the SWOT analysis of the region. The South South can be the oil hub. Having this in place, no Central party can be allowed and each region can have their various monetary policy not some Central bank descending on regions for rules. Lagos and South West might want to be a tax heaven like Switzerland while Enugu and South East might want to follow the British way by been a taxes region. It depends on the region. With this in place, I bet you, the economy of the Confederates would improve and competition would be set into motion. The question is , do we have the political and moral will to have this restructured setup? It is the way Canada, Malaysia, UK , UAE and even USA works...can't we just copy workable blueprint ...Biko Enough of these drama .. every region will benefit www.etimes.com.ng |
President Muhammadu Buhari has said the country will collaborate with Turkey in the fight against terrorism and arms smuggling into Nigeria. The decision was one of those taken at the conclusion of the ninth Summit when President Buhari met with President Recep Erdogan of Turkey. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu in a statement on Sunday said the two governments agreed to support each other in the fight against terrorism, human trafficking, drugs trafficking and arms trafficking after Buhari’s four-day engagement in Turkey. The president’s spokesperson in the statement titled, “Key Takeaways From President Muhammadu Buhari’s Four-Day Engagement in Turkey,” said the Buhari’s visit to Turkey featured the discussion about security and anti-terrorism; agricultural cooperation; trade cooperation; education and health; transport and connectivity; energy sector cooperation and increased private sector participation. He said the President of Turkey mentioned the menace of the Fethullah organization “FETO”. “There are more than 1,000 Turkish citizens in Nigeria, many of them accused of belonging to this organization and for which reason, their passports have been declared invalid by their country. “Nigeria has her own problems with the Boko Haram terrorist organization which claims ties to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS and (possibly) Daesh, (two international terrorist organisations which Turkey is up against) in the fight of which we get support from Turkey and we desire more.” Shehu said Nigeria and Turkey are both confronted with domestic terror organizations for which they need each other’s help. Other issue highlighted during Buhari’s visit to Turkey was that of smuggling of illicit arms from Turkey into Nigeria. “The issue of the smuggling of illicit arms allegedly from Turkey was also discussed. Turkey agreed to enter into an agreement with Nigeria that their ports, harbors, airports and territories will not ever again be used as transit points for such trafficking originating from other lands,” the presidential spokesman said. On the issues of the suspected terrorists of Turkish origin in Nigeria, Buhari assured President Erdogan that he will not allow any person or organization to use her territory for any subversive activities. https://etimes.com.ng/nigeria-turkey/
