Phones / 10 Tips For Smartphone Security by Anegbettedude: 10:02am On Oct 16, 2018
It is really important that your smartphone is secure for many reasons. You may keep data on it and if your phone was lost or stolen, this would be lost. Or perhaps your personal information may be hacked from internet pages you have visited or from the smartphone itself. We’ve put together some tips to help keep your device as secure as possible.

**1. Use a screen lock**

Many new phones offer a “pattern lock” – a personalised shape or pattern that is drawn on the screen to grant access. However, ensure that the screen is cleaned regularly. If your phone is stolen or lost any finger traces can sometimes be seen and accessed on the screen. Alternatively a PIN code offers an alternative and can also save time. Make your password difficult to crack but memorable for you. The best advice on creating secure passwords is to take the initial letters of a line in a song, play or book, and to make a password from those letters.

**2. Use a SIM card lock**

A screen lock is helpful but won’t stop someone removing the SIM card from your phone and using it on another phone. To prevent this from happening, set up a SIM card lock in the form of a PIN number that will need to be entered when a phone is turned on in order to connect to a network.

**3. Protect sensitive data**

While PIN entry and password locks are helpful, a smartphone is effectively a miniature computer with often easily removable storage. It’s far too easy to retrieve data by simply plugging it into a computer or removing a microSD card.

It’s important to protect sensitive data saved to internal storage. Software is available that can encrypt files or folders so that a code must be entered before a file can be viewed or copied. A lot of this software is free to download and use and can work effectively with your phone to provide automated protection, so there’s little hassle involved once it’s up and running. An example of such software is AutoKrypt but do 'shop around' to find the right solution for your set-up.

**4. Wireless protection**

Any device that’s can send data across the airwaves is a concern for security.

Always switch off your wireless connection when it’s not in use. It ensures that people can’t connect to a device without your knowledge. It’s also worth checking your phone’s network security settings as it might be configured to automatically connect to a network when in range without you knowing.

Ensure that your home accessed wireless router is protected by a pass code.

If using mobile wireless or a hotspot, be careful of malicious connections that looks very much like a legitimate hotspot from a large company.

**5. Protect bluetooth use**

Bluetooth isn’t generally seen as a risk as it has a relative shot range (10 metres approx). However, hackers have been known to remotely access a phone if they are in range.

Ensure that bluetooth is turned off when not in use. Set the bluetooth configuration to ‘non discoverable’, so that people searching for nearby devices can’t see yours.

Any unknown requests that pop up through a bluetooth connection, such as an offer to ‘pair with a device' should be ignored or declined. A hacker in range could make use of your device through bluetooth if it is not secured.

**6. Application download security**

Unfortunately the increase in malware relating to smartphones has increased the need to be cautious when downloading applications, and to pay attention to the requirements that any software requires when you install. It can be very easy not to read anything in an effort to get the app up and running, but be careful of any demands to access various features of your phone, particularly if the app isn’t well known.

**7. Internet browsing**

Be careful when accessing a web browser on your smartphone as it can be easy to accept messages that pop up. For example agreeing to save user details and passwords might make it easy to remember for later, but unfortunately others can do the same if they gain access to your phone.

If any security warning pop up when looking at a website, take note of it and leave the website if needed. Also, ensure any banking or shopping sites where you put in secure information have a padlock in the address bar to ensure that the site is encrypted. For more on shopping safely online, see our guide.

**8. Turn off geotagging**

Many smartphone social networking apps automatically upload photos to the Internet. The problem with this is that many phones embed location tags, also called "geotags," right into the photo files themselves.

Anyone with the right software can look at your Facebook or Flickr pictures and find out where you have been and where you are right at that very moment.

The geotagging feature can be turned off on most phones which gives you privacy and ensures that you can’t be found by someone you might not wish to be found by.

**9. Install antivirus**

The capabilities of smartphones are approaching those of a PC, but most people have no form of protection, although they can face similar threats.

Spam containing malware attachments or links to attack sites or infected apps that exploit weaknesses in the operating system are all starting to appear.

Many antivirus companies now offer free versions of their commercial mobile products and also protection for multiple PCs and a phone, for a yearly subscription.

Unfortunately, fake antivirus software, designed to infect your device or make you think it's protected when it's not, has also now made its way to smartphones so do be vigilant.

**10. Remote wipe **

If the worst happens and your phone is lost or stolen, you may want to protect your data by wiping data quickly and remotely.

Many operating systems have a range of third-party, dedicated remote wipe applications to choose from. These tend to be subscription services, but prices are usually less than £5 a month.

Alternatively, there are other features offered by antivirus packages. Free versions, like AVG's Mobilation Free, offer local wipe facilities. However, it's not always clear if remote wipe is included or just a local wipe facility, so check with the software vendor before you pay out.

Phones / How To Get Rid Of Unwanted Notifications On Your Android Phone by Anegbettedude: 3:03pm On Oct 15, 2018
HOW TO GET RID OF UNWANTED NOTIFICATIONS ON YOUR ANDROID PHONE

Notifications are not something we don't come across these days, even on our smartphones there is a chance you're using an app that displays ads

Notifications from time to time; especially free apps or games.

This isn't a problem as far as the AD stays in the app or game during use. Once it starts popping up randomly on your home screen or unexpected locations then its a malware caused by an app. I will like to share some ways by which u can get rid of such apps or prevent it.

1. UNISTALLING SUSPECTED APPS

This is usually hit or miss but most times it works especially if you're very much aware of your phone and apps, check for newly installed, just

around the time when you noticed the ADS and uninstall it. Don't forget you may not get this right first time but if you try and it didn't

work, then you can move on to the next step.

2. USE ADWARE TO SCAN FOR THE APP.

ADWARE is an app which you can download for free on Google play , Adware will scan for apps which display ADS. Don't be surprised
when some apps show up on the list, all you need to do is tap on the information button to see what type of ADS is being displayed by the app.

Some of the results display in-app ads but what you’re looking for is anything that displays ADS on your home screen. With this information, you can take action from within the app to remove the offending software.

3. RESTRICTING BACKGROUND DATA

This is also a tactical approach to this ads matter. You would have to go to the settings to restrict background data usage of all the apps.

BE CAREFUL WHAT APPS YOU INSTALL

Even if you install apps directly from play store or use the most powerful antivirus you should always keep your wits about you and apply a healthy dose of a common scene when installing apps, opening web pages and clicking on ADS.

Phones / Does Your Smartphone Really Need A Screen Protector? by Anegbettedude: 11:40am On Oct 15, 2018
Smartphones are expensive — you wouldn’t want to spend hundreds of cash on one and end up with a scratched screen. Many people still buy screen protectors to protect those screens, but they’ve become less necessary.

Screen protectors were once practically mandatory, but advances in glass and coatings have made them unnecessary for most people. You don’t have to buy a screen protector when you get a new phone.
Screen protectors change the experience of using your smartphone’s touch screen — they may seem softer or more grippy. Placing another sheet of plastic between you and the screen will change how your device’s screen looks, especially if the screen protector discolors over time. This is all assuming you apply the screen protector properly — if you’re not careful, you may end up with bubbles and cracks under your screen protector and you may have to apply a new one.

We can go on and on about the merits and demerits of having a screen protector especially the common ones on but does your phone really need one ?

Art, Graphics & Video / Smartphone Photography Tips: Handy Tricks You Should Know by Anegbettedude: 3:04pm On Sep 26, 2018
Smartphone cameras have improved dramatically in the last few years, owing to better sensors and smarter image processing. Heck, the multi-camera revolution has also yielded better zoom and depth-of-field effects hitherto unknown to smartphone photography.

Nevertheless, having a great camera is only part of the battle. The rest is up to the photographer holding it, so we take a look at a few smartphone photography tips you should know.

The difference between a good and average photographer often boils down to sheer volume of photos taken. After all, there have to be a few decent snaps after shooting 300 photos, right?

So next time you take a photo, hit the shutter button a few more times for good measure. And thanks to the excellent backup functionality of Google Photos, those snaps don’t have to clog up your internal storage. Slightly changing your position, focal point or angle as you fire off photos will also give you more options than two dozen of the exact same shot.

Then try burst mode or record in 4K

Some phones, like Samsung devices, group all burst shots into one collection.
Burst mode is seriously handy for photos of kids, group shots (there’s always someone asking for another shot), and subjects with plenty of movement like sports or pets. Some phones also allow you to easily keep a few snaps and ditch the rest of the burst, which is a rather useful touch.

Android Authority and DroneRush writer Jonathan Feist also suggests you try shooting a 4K video and picking a frame that you want to use as a photo. After all, 4K screengrabs are just over 8MP. The easiest way to do this is to tap the camera shutter button while filming. But a few preinstalled video players allow you to grab the frame while it’s playing back the clip.

Don’t have that functionality on your phone? Then try a third-party app like AndroVid.

Learn all about your camera app…

Whether you’ve got a new phone or an older device, it’s worth spending the time to visit every nook and cranny of your camera app. After all, you’ll never seriously improve your smartphone photography if all you do is shoot in full auto.

One example is XOS 3.0 camera app, which allows you to tap to focus.

Or download another app

The preinstalled camera app isn’t necessarily the be-all-and-end-all for your smartphone. In fact, there are loads of third-party camera apps on the Play Store.
These apps can potentially give you everything from granular controls to more advanced modes.
Looking for a camera with manual controls and a histogram? Then try Footej Camera.
Need a selfie-focused app? Then give Candy Camera a whirl. Even if you don’t care for the features, the third-party apps might just spit out better photos.

Regular readers might also know about the unofficial Google Camera HDR+ camera app. This isn’t supported by Google or in the Play Store, but it’s certainly a fantastic app (if it works on your phone). Another app worth checking out is Open Camera.

Do you really need the flash?

Smartphones have made big strides in the low-light photography department, so you won’t always need the flash in these situations. All too often the flash can ruin what would otherwise have been a nice shot.

In fact, many of today’s flagship phones are capable of great shots without the flash. So the next time you find yourself taking a photo at dusk or indoors, try a few with a flash and several without.

You’ll certainly encounter a few moments in low-light where the flash is the only option, but again, it doesn’t hurt to experiment. Just remember, many pro photographers intentionally shoot darker photos, because they can always bring the shadows up in post, but can’t do much with blown out areas. Dark, moody images can also be much more evocative than floodlit ones.

Learn when/how to use the sun

Another rule of thumb is that you should try not to shoot into the sun when taking photos of people. There are exceptions to this, of course, such as if you want to create silhouettes or just want to experiment. Nevertheless, try to have the sun lighting up your subjects/objects, rather than directly hitting your camera.

Speaking of the sun, you’ll also want to take photos during the so-called golden hours (just after sunrise or just before sunset). Do this and you’re likely to get some gorgeous colors. Heck, everyone knows that the sunset itself makes for a wonderful snap too, so you can’t go wrong there. You can also try alternating between focusing on the horizon and on the sky to get some really popping colors.

Phones / Five Features You Must Disable On New Smartphones by Anegbettedude: 9:29am On Sep 11, 2018
YOU may need to disable the following five features from a new smartphone you have just bought,

1. Automatic brightness and other features that affect battery life

Manufacturers offer an automatic brightness system. The smartphone detects the ambient light level and adapts its display so that it remains comfortable to read. This is a laudable idea, but the resolution is disappointing most of the time since the luminosity threshold is usually higher than you need.
Brightness means energy, and the consumption will increase, which means your battery will ultimately be paying for it. In short, turn off the automatic brightness and calibrate it yourself. You will get more battery life out of it.
The screen is the element that most affects your smartphone’s autonomy, so you have nothing to lose by taking a look at your screen options to see if something needs to be changed. This of course depends on your use and habits, but in most cases, it is useless to keep the screen on for more than a minute.
•The secret is to improve battery life on any phone.

2. Useless and cumbersome bloatware

Your smartphone most likely contains at least one app that does not interest you. Whether it is a service from Google (for example, Duo), an app pre-installed by your operator, an app from the manufacturer, or a sponsored app. The number of these apps varies according to the manufacturer, but what is certain is that these apps not only take up space, but may also run in the background. In many cases, these apps can be deleted (and you are better off deleting them).
As a rule, Google apps cannot be deleted (at least not without hacking). Some apps pre-installed by manufacturers cannot be uninstalled either. So, what you have to do is simply disable them: not only will they take up less space in the system, but they also will no longer bother you. To do this, go to the Settings, find the list of apps and search to find the one you are looking for.

3. Animations and transitions
If your smartphone is not very powerful, you should do everything you can to make it run a bit more smoothly. There is one little trick that can help you on a daily basis: disabling transitions and animations. To be more specific, these are the effects you see when you switch from one screen or app to another: they can be pretty, but they are unnecessary. If you disable them, transitions will be faster.
All you have to do is simply enable developer options. Once you have done this, you will find the developer options menu and ‘Window animation scale’, ‘Transition animation scale’, and ‘Animation duration scale’. Once you have done this, you will have to reduce it (for example, to 0.5) or deactivate it.

4. Vibrations and sounds
These vibrations and sounds are intended to mimic the response of a physical button, but in practice, they are usually quite irritating. Even worse, they will impact your device’s autonomy. In short, you should ask yourself if this feature really is of value to you. If this is not the case, you should deactivate these features.
To disable these sounds and vibrations:
•Go to Settings > Sound & notifications
•Once you are in this menu, you can disable everything: Dial pad sounds, Screen locking sounds, Charging sounds, Touch sounds, Vibrate on touch, etc.
Please note: if the smartphone is being used by an older person who does not have a great sense of touch, it is recommended that you leave the vibration on so that they can better feel the screen.

5. Personalisation for advertisements
Of course, Google uses your private data to get to know you better, which allows it to target you with ads. By accepting Google on your phone, you accept the rules of the game: it will get information about you through its various services and apps. You cannot do much about this (unless you boycott Google), but you can decide whether apps can use your ad ID or not. If you decide to disable this option, Google won’t be able to offer you targeted ads (but they will continue to send you ads anyway).
To do this, simply go to Settings and search in the Google menu. You will then find ‘Ads’, and there, you will be able to set which apps may use your ad ID to create profiles and run custom ads. Of course, if you want to see targeted ads, it is better to leave this option enabled, but you will not prevent Google from getting information about you.
Reasons for disabling the five features

Optimisation and fluidity: We all want an ultra-fast smartphone that loads applications quickly and offers maximum battery life. Some of you will have an advantage over others (if you have a powerful smartphone), while others will have more difficulties. In both cases, it is recommended that you avoid as many problems as possible.

User experience: The experience you have with your smartphone depends on many elements, some of which can be quite subjective. Some things can be really painful on a daily basis.

Privacy and confidentiality: If these words are important to you, you know that they have been in the headlines in recent weeks. The Cambridge Analytica case has catapulted Facebook to the forefront (due to criticism of its business model and the exposure of some of its practices), and other big names in technology have quickly followed up by providing more precise user conditions.

Phones / Reasons While Your Phone Is Slow And Freeze by Anegbettedude: 2:55pm On Aug 16, 2018
Mobile phones are built to perform fast and transition smoothly, but sometimes, this isn’t the case, and instead, they end up performing slowly and freezing at given intervals.

There are different things that could cause your phone to become slow and freeze. Here are five.

OS UPGRADES

Mobile phones differ in their specifications and build. They also oftentimes, come with the perfect operating systems for them. However, it’s not news that IOS and Android devices usually have newer versions of these OS available for download for those who can get them. Now, while these upgrades are available to everyone, not every phone can use them successfully without suffering complications. Certain OS are built specifically for certain phones with certain specifications. If you download an upgrade that your phone isn’t built to handle, it can disturb its smooth functionality, and cause it to slow down or freeze.

APP UPDATES

App developers are constantly pushing newer versions of their products. New versions oftentimes come with more features, which mean an increase in size that would eat up more space in your phone. Updates make it possible for even the smallest apps to become big in your CPU.

BACKGROUND APPS

Most times people tend to neglect background apps. Believe me or not, you have almost 80% more apps installed on your devices than when you first got it. Just go to your phone’s settings and have a brief look at all of your downloaded apps.

This problem arises when some apps keep running in the background without launching it. There are many apps like email services, messaging apps which are always active. These apps use CPU and RAM, which impacts negatively on your phone’s performance.

So, make sure to disable or uninstall the apps which consume lots of RAM and CPU.

MEMORY DEGRADATION

Smartphones run on a flash memory, the most common type of flash memory is known as NAND.

NAND memory gets slower as it fills up. It usually requires a certain amount of vacant blocks to operate efficiently.

NAND memory degrades after some time of usage; there are three types- SLC, MLC, and TLC– each one of them has write cycle boundaries per memory cell. Once the limit is reached, the cells wear out and this affects the performance.

The best thing to do is to stick with 75% of your device’s total storage capacity. For example, if you are having 16GB internal storage, don’t cross the 10GB threshold.

OVERUSED PHONE MEMORY

The more you use your phone to play games, enjoy apps, surf the net, the likelier your phone’s memory gets full quick.

Whenever your storage system is full in your Android phone just clear unnecessary files to prevent your phone from slowing down
