Foot Binding cry

Footbinding first became fashionable China in around the eighth century and persisted for almost a thousand years. Women were literally crippled by this custom.

A noble woman in Imperial China with normal feet was practically unmarriageable. (Only peasants had normal feet, because they needed to get about in the fields and work. A real lady showed her status by staggering around in agony or having someone carry her.) cry cry cry

While still a small child a rich girl had her feet soaked in a bath of urine and vinegar, then all the toes except the big one were folded under the foot, and secured with tight bandages. This soaking and binding process would continue throughout the girl’s childhood, with the result that the feet never grew more than three inches long

Often this disgusting procedure led to gangrene; this was considered a good thing as the rotting toes would then fall off and cease being a nuisance! The ideal of perfection was to have hardly any foot at all.

The Lip Plate Custom

The lip plate, also known as a lip plug or lip disc, is a form of body modification. Increasingly large discs (usually circular, and made from clay or wood) are inserted into a pierced hole in either the upper or lower lip, or both, thereby stretching it. The term labret denotes all kinds of pierced-lip ornaments, including plates and plugs.

In many older sources it is reported that the plate's size is a sign of social or economical importance in some tribes. However, because of natural mechanical attributes of human skin, it seems that the plate's size often just depends on the stage of stretching of the lip and the wishes of the wearer.

Many recent sources claim that, for Mursi and Surma women, the size of their lip plate indicates the number of cattle paid as the bride price.

In recent times, facial modifications are increasingly popular.

That Dark Eye Makeup Egyptians Wore

The Egyptians produced so much art in their time that you can almost certainly reproduce your average Egyptian fresco from memory with a pencil and paper -- everyone in profile, standing around and staring out with one giant eyeliner-ringed eyeball.

There was a practical purpose behind the distinctive Egyptian chic. It turns out that the Egyptians' affinity for eyeliner served the same purpose as the black smears on a modern football player's cheekbones -- it helped to reduce glare from the oppressive desert sunlight.

Not only was the Egyptian desert bright enough to begin with, but as we've pointed out before, the pyramids were originally covered in a white limestone coating so that every venture outside your hut was like someone shining a spotlight directly into your eyes for 10 hours. Slapping a thick layer of black gunk around their eyes was a minor but welcome relief from the constant light assault the Egyptians were subjected to.

Also, see those little cone things on their heads? They really served as the Egyptian method for dealing with the fact that they all reeked like nothing you could imagine. The lifestyle of a desert environment comes prepackaged with the reality that most of your daily activities are going to revolve around contact with somebody else's sweat. The cones were actually composed of animal fat and perfume, which would melt during the day and produce an aroma to offset their intolerable stench.

Huge, Ridiculous Powdered Wigs

The fastest way to identify a movie as a period piece is when everyone important in the film is wearing a stupid-looking wig. Kings and aristocrats, presidents, politicians and composers are always decked out in elaborate white/blond curly wigs, often adorned with plaits, ribbons and bows. In Britain and Australia, judges and barristers still wear them. So who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Blame King Louis XIII of France. The French monarchy had long suffered from a hereditary condition of embarrassing male pattern baldness, and so, tired of being mocked by the King of England, Louis wore a badass wig to show that he was the most virile king around. Before long, his unconventional style became a fashion statement in the royal court, with most of the king's men adopting the elaborate hairpieces, whether they were bald or not.

With France being the center of European culture in the 17th century, anything that was sexy in France quickly spread to the rest of Europe. As aristocrats tried to outdo one another, the wigs, called perukes or periwigs, became more and more fabulous. This led to the creation of a whole industry of wig-makers, who established their own guild in 1665. The wigs became such a part of the culture that you had to wear a wig to move upward in society. By the late 1700s, men were pouring a starch-based powder over their wigs to make them as white as possible.

The wig craze died in England when the government sensed a money-making opportunity and imposed a hefty tax on hair powder. At the same time, a minor incident in France called the French Revolution made it kind of uncool to be seen in public wearing a symbol of the aristocracy. But until then, the peruke phenomenon had been one of the most long-standing and weirdest fashion crazes in European history. All because the King of France was self-conscious about his bald spot.

Neck Rings

In certain African and Asian cultures neck rings are worn to assist a woman’s matrimonial chances. Girls as young as two were fitted with spiraled metal coils, and these were gradually increased, some by as much as twenty turns.

The neck doesn’t elongate of course. That’s called execution by hanging and as such is not a very effective fashion trend. What happens is the weight of the collar depresses the collar bone and ribs down to a position forty five degrees below what is normal. cry

Those Ponytails Stuck on the Top of Samurais' Heads

The iconic image of a Japanese warrior (or today, sumo wrestler) comes complete with a weird hairstyle in which the front of the head is shaved while the remaining mullet is bound up in a bun or topknot. The origin of this bizarre haircut, called "chonmage," goes all the way back to the age of the samurai, as it helped to keep a samurai's helmet on his head.

Since the samurai class were wealthy and influential nobility, it didn't take long for the style to catch on among the Japanese public, who longed to be sword-slinging badasses. Over time, it became traditional for boys turning 13 to shave the front of their heads and adopt the samurai hairstyle to signal that they had become men. Hair neatness was so important in Japan that artists usually employed messy hair as shorthand to represent someone who had been in some way disgraced.

The fashion was pretty widespread until globalization forced the Japanese to realize that the rest of the world found their hairstyles absolutely ridiculous -- which is a ballsy claim, considering everyone in the West was wearing powdered wigs at the time (but more on that later).

A story from 1863 recounts the adventures of two Japanese students who covered their chonmage hairstyles with hats while visiting Holland. When forced to remove the hats at the theater, they caused such an uproar of hilarity that the play had to be stopped, and the story made the national press the next day. It's just another example of a national pastime ruined by racism.

These days, the legacy of chonmage remains almost solely with sumo wrestlers, who are too fat to be bothered with your criticism of their hairstyles.

Romance / Common Mistakes People Make In Relationships by aniiii(f): 2:49am On Jul 08, 2013
1) INFATUATION - this is really the biggest problem. When you 'fall' in love, usually you are completely off balance, only seeing what you want to and putting so much pressure on the relationship too early. It's necessary to take a step back and regain your equilibrium. You need to think of the not so good side of that person as well as the great stuff. Balance!

2) EXPECTATIONS - often they are way too high and unrealistic in the beginning. You fell in love with a human being with all their 'faults' and good points, not a superbeing.

3) YOUR NEEDS - you realise that they don't actually meet your every need. So you feel disappointed and try to change them. Get real, no one person is ever going to meet your every need, it's not realistic. You may have to look elsewhere for your needs, e.g. friends who have a great sense of humour or share your love for doing your favourite hobby, etc.

4) APPRECIATION - your so busy demanding either inside your mind or out loud to your partner about what's not right or what they aren't doing, that they feel unappreciated. They'll be thinking why can't you just love me for who I am (and so will you) if the shoe is on the other foot!

5) SPACE - you don't allow them to have their own space and they begin to resent you. Again, so would you if they didn't allow you to have your own space.

6) PROJECTIONS - oh yes, this is a big one. People often project their family history on to their partners e.g. they lacked approval or recognition as a child from their parents and now they are always striving to get that from their partner or friends. Stop it! Take responsibility for your life, you can change, you don't have to drag your old history around with you and keep re-living it.

7) COMMUNICATION - you must speak your truth in an appropriate manner. Many people will either just sit and seethe about something for days or weeks or have an immediate argument if things aren't going 'right'. A really excellent book I believe everyone should read, but especially couples, is Non Violent Communication This is about owning your own feelings but commenting on the behaviour of another that upsets you, e.g. "It makes me mad when you leave your dirty clothes on the floor and I pick them up, do you think you could do x in the future please." What you are actually doing is saying how their behaviour makes you feel and owning it (your feelings) and then asking for a solution to the behaviour, therefore not slagging them, just commenting on their behaviour.

8 ) MEN ARE FROM MARS... - let's face it men and women are 'wired' differently and that's all there is to it! Men (generally) can't multi task. Blame it on their corpus collosum, it's very small! So don't ask him to put petrol in the car tomorrow morning when he's washing the dishes, because chances are, he probably won't hear it, even if he answers you it most probably wouldn't have gone in!

9) VALUES - probably one of the most important aspect of relationships. If your top 3 Values and core beliefs do not coincide with your partner's to some extent, you are not off to a great start. All Core Values and Beliefs drive our behaviour.

10) MINIMISE - if you minimise yourself to fit in with them, then you will never live your authentic life and will feel unfulfilled inside and frustrated. You must have a very strong sense of self and live by your Values. Equally, you don't want a partner who becomes like a little pet poodle, just pandering to you and not vocalising his/her needs and desires.

Health / How To Stay Cool For The Hot Holiday Season by aniiii(f): 2:08am On Jul 08, 2013
1 Stay out of the sun while it's at its hottest. This commonsense approach isn't always easy to adhere to when summer fun beckons, so it bears repeating. Avoid exercising, traveling, sitting and walking about in the noonday sun as much as possible. It's best to limit your sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day during warmer months. When you are outside during these times, limit your exposure to heat by retreating to shade as much as possible and not exerting yourself. Most of all, drink plenty of water.

If you'd normally exercise or work outdoors during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during cooler months, be prepared to change this schedule when it's hotter. Slow down, it's not worth pushing yourself strenuously when it's hot outside; things that require a lot of physical effort can be done early in the morning or later in the day.
Spend more time in air-conditioned places when the heat is excessive. Visit public buildings such as the library or a store if you don't have adequate air-conditioning at home.
Some people are particularly vulnerable to heat and should stay in cool places during hot weather, such as children, the elderly and those who have health problems.
While sunscreen and sunglasses don't necessarily have a cooling effect, their protective effect is vital during warmer weather, as well as being painful and damaging, sunburn reduces your ability to release heat from your body and causes you to lose body fluids.[1] Be sure to use them.

2 Plan ahead. Whatever you're doing outdoors, having a plan will help cut down on unnecessary activity in the heat. For example, if you're hiking, study the map at the beginning of the day and calculate the best route, especially one that makes the most of shade where possible. If you're swimming, even though water is cooling the sun will bear down on you, so figure out how long you can safely swim before needing to get out and dry off, and stick to this time limit. If you have to travel a lot during hot days in your vehicle, plan ahead by having your vehicle inspected and ensuring that your air-conditioning is in working order; also, keep a plentiful water supply on board for constant re-hydration. By having a plan, you can set time limits on your exposure to the heat and plan ways to minimize the effects of the heat before you head into it each day. Always be sure to stick to your time limits by prioritizing and leaving less important things to be finished when it's cooler.

As part of your planning, spend time watching the weather forecasts. In the USA, NOAA produces a heat alert based on Heat Index Values. The importance of this measure is that it tells you how hot it will really feel outdoors when the relative humidity has been factored in with the actual air temperature. Don't go simply on the temperature but pay attention to the meteorological assessment of the heat potential. However, also be aware that heat index values are devised for shady areas and light wind conditions, if you're under full sunshine and in the presence of strong winds, the heat factor can increase by up to 15°F.[1]

3 Dress simply. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing will help to keep you cooler, even better if it is light in color as this will reflect the heat and sunlight better. Shorts and short sleeved shirts are good choices, although a lightweight long sleeved shirt and pants are preferable if you're hiking or working outdoors for any length of time, as this provides more protection against the UV rays. Cotton clothing tends to keep you cool; be careful of synthetics as they can increase heat, although some synthetic clothes are specifically made to reduce heat (check the labels).
Don't forget your head. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, as this helps to keep you cooler by providing shade. However, in extreme heat, such as the desert Southwest, a hat will retain heat. Try using a bandanna folded into a triangle and wrapped over your head as is often seen on bikers - this actually wicks sweat away from your head, spreads it over a large area where it evaporates and reduces your scalp temperature. And always add sunglasses.
Consider wearing less makeup. Too much makeup can impede sweating and make you feel hotter, especially around your facial area. A little matte powder for oil control may be suitable. For makeup and cosmetics that you do wear, consider storing them in the refrigerator. They'll be refreshingly cool when applied to your face, body and feet straight from the fridge.
Wear less accessories during hotter weather. Metallic accessories can heat up considerably and less is always best when it comes to keeping cool.
If you're worried about body odor, you might want to skip camisoles and tank tops, as these can make body odor more noticeable.
If you have long hair, wear it up and off your face and body. If you have short hair, consider keeping it very short to minimize the insulating effects of hair.

4 Wear footwear that breathes. Flip flops are great for some activities, but more strenuous activities require arch support, durability, and comfort. Sport sneakers are great, but be sure you have worn them beforehand, so they won't rub your feet and give you blisters. Remember to wear socks, preferably ones that wick away moisture to help keep you cool and comfortable. If you're going to the beach or pool, wear water shoes to protect your feet from the heat of beach sand and from sharp items in the water. For urban wear, sandals and flip flops are generally ideal for keeping your feet cool.

Converse are not good shoes for intense summer fun, as they provide little arch support equipped with special inserts.
Be careful if you decide to go barefoot. Many artificial pavements become unbearably hot during warm weather and can scald your feet. Also watch out for sharp objects and doggy-do when going barefoot in places such as parks and the beach.

5 Stay hydrated. Water is essential for keeping your cool during hot weather. Water keeps your body cool and should be drunk even if you don't feel thirsty. It's okay to also drink commercial waters (such as Vitamin Water) or energy drinks such as Powerade or Gatorade but they're usually not necessary unless you're deliberately replenishing lost vitamins/electrolytes or energy following a sporting activity. Purchase a durable water bottle or water pack that you can tote everywhere and refill at any safe water tap.
The best way to check your hydration level is to measure your urination frequency and color - if you haven't gone in a while, you need to drink more water and if the color is dark, you need more water.

Freeze a bottle of water to carry around with you. It'll be solid when you leave the house but the heat will start melting it from the moment you take it out of the freezer and you'll benefit from the continuously chilled slowly thawing water. Wrap in toweling or similar to prevent water condensation affecting other items in your bag.
Stay away from sugary drinks such as sodas and do not drink alcoholic drinks. Minimize caffeinated drinks, such as tea and coffee because these tend to increase dehydration.
As well as drinking water, use it to spritz yourself cool too. Fill a spray bottle with pure water and place in the refrigerator at home or work. When you feel too hot, spray a fine mist of the cooled water over face and body to help cool you down quickly. Refill as needed and keep refrigerated.

6 Eat to stay cool. Food can keep you cool provided you make the right choices. Prefer salads, fresh raw food, vegetables and fruit. Avoid eating meat and protein-heavy foods during the heat of the day because these can increase metabolic heat production, which can add to loss of water.[1]
Avoid eating junk food––it lacks healthy nutrients, is often hot and greasy and won't give you the energy needed to cope with the heat. If you must eat junk food, keep it for the cooler hours of the day or year.

Find foods that don't need cooking, so that you don't have to turn on the stove. This might be a good time to experiment with some raw or paleo food choices––check out recipes online, in a good book or from your local library.
Cold soups are great in warm weather. If you haven't tried them yet, hot weather is the excuse you need!

7 Use fans. Whether hand-held or electric, fans can keep you cool by continuously circulating air. Paper or battery-operated fans can be used almost anywhere–at work, at home or on-the-go. In your home and office space, locate fans in rooms where you are working or resting to keep the air circulating freely and to reduce the mugginess of heat.
Try making your own "swamp cooler". This can be done by simply placing a bowl of chilled water in front of a fan and letting the fan air blow over it. Other methods include wetting a large piece of fabric, such as a towel or sheet, and hanging it in front of a fan (taking care to angle it so that it cannot catch in the fan) and let the air blow through the wet material.
Fans tend not to be useful when temperatures hit the high 90s (Fahrenheit) or high 30s (Celsius), although a swamp cooler arrangement might work still.

8 Allow yourself time to acclimatize if traveling. Travelers often make the mistake of trying to maintain normal levels of activity when arriving in a country warmer than the one they've left. This is a mistake that can result in harm. Rather than pushing yourself, give yourself time to acclimatize to the new warmer environment, which means minimizing physical activity until the heat feels more tolerable. This will usually take a few days, so plan a restful period at the commencement of a vacation in a warmer place. Once you feel more comfortable in the heat, gradually build up your physical activities until you're back to your normal level.
Rest is an important way of coping with too much heat. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to rest when you feel fatigued during warm weather. In high heat, consider moving slowly to prevent overheating.

9 Make a game out of staying cool. Kids know how much fun it can be to find playful ways to stay cool and there are some really enjoyable ways to stay cool when it's hot, whatever your age. Here are just a few suggestions to take all the seriousness out of staying cool:
Turn on the sprinklers, gather your friends and run through them for a time.
Increase the fun by making water balloons and throwing these at each other. The aim is to get hit in order to cool down, so remind everyone to stay in the spirit of cooling down instead of trying to dodge them.
Have a pool party. Cover the pool with a shade cover if it doesn't already have one and spend time partying by––and preferably in––the pool. Avoid alcohol though––have plenty of cool and refreshing chilled mocktails and other cold non-alcoholic choices for everyone to enjoy. No pool? Get a kiddy pool and fill it up and paddle in it under shade.
Have an afternoon of making and eating your own frozen treats, including ice cream, popsicles, slushies, frozen fruit, etc. Invite friends around to make it a party event.
Make use of commercial venues that provide cold entertainment. The cinema is often freezing, so it's a good choice. Or visit a water park or ice skating rink. You could even devise a game with friends to find the coldest buildings in your city or town that permit public access. Is it your library or your local ice cream parlor that's coldest inside?

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis is very common problem faced equally by both men and women. Toenail fungus symptoms include inflammation, swelling, extreme pain, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail. Some of the main causes of toenail fungus are wearing synthetic socks, abnormal PH levels of the skin, low immunity system, continuous exposure to moist environment, sweaty shoes, poor hygiene and diabetes.

If toenail fungus is not taken care of within time it can cause cracking, splitting, and even complete loss of the toenail. Well, the good news is that toenail fungus is curable and that too without spending money on medical bills. There are various natural remedies that can cure the infection in a month or two.

Here are top 10 ways to get rid of Toenail Fungus.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has got antiseptic as well as fungicide properties that help a lot in the treatment of toenail fungus. This oil is also used to treat other kinds of skin infections. If suffering from toenail fungus, take pure tea tree oil and with the help of a cotton ball rub the oil on the affected toe and nail for ten minutes and then use a toothbrush to gently scrub the affected nail. Before applying the oil on the skin, you must dilute it by mixing it with equal amount of olive oil or thyme oil. This remedy will give positive results if the infection is not too old.

Baking Soda

Baking soda that is easily available at home can also be used to cure toenail fungus. For this treatment you will need half cup of baking soda, four cups of hot water, one fourth cup of peroxide and half cup of Epsom salts. Mix all the ingredients properly and then add one fourth cup of white vinegar to it. Now soak the affected toe in vinegar for a few minutes and then with the help of a cotton ball apply this mixture on the nail and cover it up properly with a tape in place. Repeat the process in every ten hours for about four weeks. If this remedy is followed regularly, the fungus on your toe nail will disappear quickly.

Orange Oil

Another way to deal with toenail fungus is to use pure orange oil. All types of orange oil have antifungal properties and thus it can be used on infected toenails. With the help of a dropper apply orange oil daily between toes, on and under toe nails and allow it to sit for at least one hour. You can also dilute the orange oil with equal amount of any kind of carrier oil, such as grape seed oil. As orange oil can cause allergic reactions and can have side effects, it is advisable to test some diluted orange oil on a small spot of skin before applying it to the infected skin area.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of the best ingredients that can be used in the treatment of toenail fungus. For treating toenail fungus mix one part of white vinegar with two parts of warm water. Now soak the affected toe in this solution for about ten to fifteen minutes daily until the fungus is gone. In case of skin irritation add more water to the solution and repeat the process every alternate day. It is very essential to dry the affected area well after rinsing, otherwise the fungus may spread.

Garlic

Garlic contains allicin, which has antifungal properties and thus it can be used to deal with toenail fungus. For fast treatment use garlic oil mixed with equal amount of white vinegar. Apply this mixture on and around the infected toenail and cover the treated toe with an elastic bandage. This mixture can slow down the activity of the fungus within a few hours. In case garlic oil is not available, you can make your own by crushing two garlic cloves and adding two tablespoon of olive oil. Leave this mixture to sit for 24 hours. Even eating one clove of garlic daily can help a lot.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is mild acidic in nature and thus it can prevent toenail fungus from spreading. At the same time apple cider vinegar also fights germs and kills bacteria. For this remedy mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water to make a solution. Now soak your toe daily for half an hour in this solution. When done, dry your toenail thoroughly. If this remedy is followed daily for a few weeks, you can notice improvement very quickly. Another option is make an anti-fungal exfoliating scrub by mixing coarsely ground rice flour with a few spoons of apple cider vinegar. Apply this paste over the affected nail and gently scrub the area. This remedy will help to get rid of dead skin cells and will keep your skin soft.

Listerine Mouth Wash

Listerine mouth wash that kills bacteria and germs in the mouth can also be used to treat toenail fungus. This is because this mouth wash has got several compounds and alcohol which act as a strong antiseptic to keep away harmful bacteria and fungus. Just fill a small tub with Listerine mouth wash, some vinegar and undiluted lemon juice. Now soak your feet in this solution for ten to fifteen minutes daily and then scrub the infected toe gently. Repeat this remedy daily until the old nail grows out and new nail replaces it.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil has got several volatile compounds and antiseptic properties that can fight any kind of infection and prevent skin irritation. Take equal amount of lavender oil and tea tree oil and mix it properly and warm it slightly. Now with the help of a cotton ball dab this solution under the top edge of the toe nail and surrounding area two to three times a day. It is recommended to apply this solution on the affected toenails before going to sleep. Put on a pair of thick woolen socks after applying it in order to increase the effectiveness of this remedy.

Oregano Oil

Oregano oil has got antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-parasitical, antiviral, analgesic and antifungal properties. This is why oregano oil can also be used to get rid of toenail fungus. Take two drops of oregano oil and mix it with one teaspoon of pure olive oil. Now apply this mixture on the affected area with the help of a dropper or cotton ball at least once in a day. Follow this remedy daily for three weeks in order to get positive results.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has got both antiseptic as well as antifungal properties. The citric acid present in lemon juice will help in stoping the toenail fungus from spreading. Take fresh lemon juice and apply it directly to the infected toenail and leave it for ten minutes before rinsing the area with warm water. This treatment should be repeated daily for one month or more until you notice positive results. Another option is to mix equal amounts of lemon juice and olive oil and use this mixture to massage the infected area. The olive oil will help to soften your skin while the lemon juice will help to control the fungal infection.
