In Nigeria right now, the most accessible client categories for a beginner social media manager are:

Small retail businesses — boutiques, shoe sellers, fabric stores, phone accessories shops. These businesses have Instagram pages and post inconsistently. Their main need is consistency and better-looking content.

Food businesses — restaurants, small chops catering, home chefs who sell on Instagram, cake makers, shawarma spots, bukkas trying to reach a new generation. Food content is inherently visual and performs well on social media. These clients are easy to produce good content for.

Service businesses — salons, barbershops, spas, dry cleaners, logistics companies, dispatch riders, event decorators, makeup artists, photographers. These businesses live and die by visibility. Their customers look them up on Instagram before they visit.

Schools and churches — private nursery and primary schools use social media for enrollment and community engagement. Churches use it for outreach. Both need consistent content but rarely have anyone managing it properly.

Professional service providers — lawyers, accountants, doctors, consultants who want to build personal brands and attract clients through social media. This category tends to pay better and take the work more seriously.

Estate agents and property developers — one of the highest-paying niches in Nigerian social media management. Property companies post listings, videos, and developments constantly and need someone who can make it look aspirational and professional.

You do not need to target all of these. Pick one category to start.

The more specific your focus, the easier it is to position yourself and the faster you build relevant experience.

A food business, a fashion brand, a school, a tech startup — there are templates for all of them. You do not need to know graphic design. You need to know how to edit a template with your client's colours, logo, and text. (Pro tip: be consistent with the colours, logo and text. Decide early on the colours and the font and stick to it.

Stable internet — at least during working hours. You do not need unlimited data, but you need enough to download assets, post content, and respond to messages. A good N3,000 to N5,000 data plan per month is workable to start. (Don't waste the data just scrolling around on social media.)

Basic writing ability — you must be able to write a clear, engaging caption in English. Not Shakespearean English. Conversational English. The kind you use when you are texting a friend about something you want them to be excited about. If you can do that, you can write captions. The more you do it, the better you get at it. Use AI for guide. Check competitors in your niche and adapt accordingly.

An understanding of the platform — you need to know how Instagram works. How hashtags function. What Reels are versus regular posts. What Stories are used for. What time posts tend to perform better. Most of this you already know from using social media yourself.

What you do NOT need:

— A laptop (helpful but not required to start)
— A professional camera
— A marketing degree or any formal qualification

Scheduling and posting — deciding when to post, at what time, how frequently, and making sure the content goes up consistently even when the business owner is busy running the actual business.

Engaging with followers — responding to comments, answering DMs professionally, liking and engaging with relevant accounts to grow visibility.

Growing the page — using smart strategies (relevant hashtags, engagement tactics, collaborations, consistent posting) to attract new followers who are actually potential customers.
