— A checklist or toolkit — a step-by-step resource that makes a process easier for someone starting out
— A swipe file — a collection of scripts, examples, or references that saves someone hours of research
— A short video training or mini course — recorded once, watched by many
— A done-for-you resource pack — for example, 30 ready-to-post social media captions for a specific industry

Notice something about all of these?

You have already been doing this work. For clients. One at a time.

The only difference now is packaging it once — and selling it many times.


WHY THIS WORKS PARTICULARLY WELL FOR NIGERIANS RIGHT NOW

Three things have aligned in a way that makes this genuinely one of the best opportunities available to skilled Nigerians at this moment.

Pick one client you have worked with in the past — recent or not so recent — and send them a genuine check-in message today.

Not a pitch. Not "I'm available for new work." Just:

"Hi [name], hope you are doing well. Just wanted to check in — how did the [project] work out for you? Hope it's been useful."

That is all.

If they respond positively, that is your opening to ask for a testimonial or a referral. If they don't respond, nothing is lost. But the ones who do respond? Some of those conversations will turn into your next piece of paid work — from someone who already knows what you can do.

HABIT 5: FOLLOW UP AFTER THE PROJECT ENDS

Most freelancers disappear the moment the money lands. The invoice is paid, the work is done, and the relationship goes cold.

This is a missed opportunity every single time.

Two to three weeks after a project ends, send a short, genuine check-in message:

"Hi [name], hope things are going well. Just checking in — how is the [project] working out for you? Any questions or anything you need?"

That is it. No pitch. No "I have new packages available."

Just a human check-in that shows you still care about their outcome after you have already been paid.

This message will surprise them. Because, usually, nobody does it.

And because nobody does it, the ones who do stand out completely. It re-opens the conversation. It reminds them you exist. It often leads to a new project being discussed without you having to ask for one.

This is also the right moment to gently ask for a referral if the conversation is going well:

"I'm glad it's working out. I'm currently looking to take on one or two more clients this month — if you know anyone who might need similar help, I would really appreciate a mention."

Most people are happy to refer someone whose work they are already pleased with. They just need to be reminded to do it.

Before you begin any job, send a short summary of what you both agreed to. Not a long contract with legal language — just a simple WhatsApp message or email that says:

"Just to confirm what we agreed: I will [describe the work] and deliver by [date]. The fee is [amount], with [payment structure — e.g., 50% upfront, 50% on delivery]. Revisions included: [number]. Please confirm this is correct and we can get started."

This one message prevents the majority of client problems.

It stops the client from expanding the scope mid-project without discussion.

It reminds both of you of the deadline so nobody is surprised.

It creates a record you can refer back to if there is a misunderstanding later.

The number of freelancers (especially in NIgeria) who skip this step and then spend weeks arguing with clients over what was agreed is genuinely heartbreaking — because a two-minute message would have prevented the whole thing.

Confirm everything. In writing. Before you start.


HABIT 2: COMMUNICATE DURING THE JOB — DO NOT DISAPPEAR

This is the single biggest complaint clients have about Nigerian freelancers. And this one irks me seriously.

Not the quality of the work. The silence.

You take a job, collect a deposit, and then the client hears nothing from you for seven days. No update. No check-in.

From the client's side, that silence feels like panic.

They start wondering: has this person collected my money and vanished? Is the work going well? Did I make a mistake hiring someone I don't know?

You do not need to send daily updates. But a brief message every two to three days — especially on longer projects — costs you nothing and gives the client enormous peace of mind.

Something as simple as:

"Hi [name], just a quick update — I'm about 60% through the work and everything is going well. Still on track to deliver by Thursday."

That message, sent on the 3rd/4th day of a two-week project, makes the client feel like they are in safe hands.

They relax.

They stop second-guessing.

And they will remember that feeling when they decide whether to hire you again.

Let me tell you about two designers.

Same skill level. Same city. Same type of clients.

Designer A delivers good work. You send her a brief, she disappears for two weeks, then drops a Google Drive link in your DM with no explanation, no context, no "here is what I did and why." When you ask for a revision, she goes quiet for five days. When she comes back, the revision is half-done. You pay her because the final result is decent — but you never hire her again.

Designer B delivers the same quality of work. But when you send her a brief, she replies within a few hours confirming she received it and when to expect a first draft. Three days before the deadline she sends a quick update — "almost done, on track for Friday." She delivers the work with a short note explaining her design choices so you understand the thinking. When you ask for a revision, she acknowledges it within the hour and tells you exactly when it will be done.

Same skill. Completely different experience.

Guess which one has a full client list, a four-month waiting list, and clients who refer her without being asked?

The difference is not talent. It is professionalism in delivery.

And professionalism, unlike talent, is something you can decide to practice starting today.

Step 2 — Search on Twitter/X or Instagram for what people with that skill are charging. Use search terms like "I charge for social media Nigeria" or "copywriter rates Nigeria" or "graphic design price Lagos." Look at five to ten results and write down the range you find.

Step 3 — Set your starting rate. Using the range you found, pick a number in the lower-to-middle band. Write it down. This is your current rate. Not "I'll decide later." Right now, in your notes app, write:

"My starting rate for [service] is [amount]."

That number now exists. It is no longer a vague idea floating in your head.

The moment you give your skill a price, you stop treating it like a hobby and start treating it like a business.

And that's how you start.

HOW TO RAISE YOUR PRICES OVER TIME

Your starting rate is not your forever rate. Here is a simple rule:

After every three to five clients, review your pricing.

If you are getting inquiries without much effort, your price is probably too low.

If every single client negotiates hard or pushes back, your price might need slight adjustment — or your pitch needs work.

Raise your prices gradually and announce it matter-of-factly, not apologetically.

"My rates are increasing to [new rate] from [date]. Current clients on ongoing work will be moved to the new rate after their current project ends."

That is it. No long explanation. No begging for understanding.

Confidence in your pricing is part of the service you are selling.

The balance is ensuring you're delivering the best service at the best possible rate.

Yes, they should chase their handlers and suppliers, but at least, catching the carriers is also part of whole gig.
