Nigeria's President Buhari heads to UK for more medical treatments

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has announced that he will travel to the United Kingdom to see his doctor, reigniting speculations about the state of his health and ability to rule Africa's biggest economy.

Buhari, 75, spent four months in London last year receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. Since then, he has faced repeated questions about the real state of his health.

Smaade:
From former Governor of Anambra state and the PDP Vice Presidential candidate in the 2019 General elections, His Excellency Peter Obi, came a warning to new Imo state Governor, His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha.

Speaking at a very high profile lecture on May 28 to mark the inauguration of Ihedioha as the governor, Obi, who was the Guest of Honour warned Ihedioha off three things.

The first thing, Obi told Ihedioha, is not to imbibe the habit of flying in chartered jets. 99 per cent of Nigerian Governors feel it is beneath them to fly on commercial planes.

This costs them millions of Naira. The governors blame it on exigencies of duties. But Obi told Ihedioha to perish the thought, and get on a commercial flight to save money with which to work for Imo people.

Obi: "Don't waste money. Ignore chartered jets. Why pay millions of Naira when you can pay only N40,000 and get to the same destination?"

The second is the office of the First Lady. It costs money.....

GMB‬ Speech While Addressing Nigeria Community In The United Kingdom.

I Will Maintain a modest lifestyle as President -Muhammadu Buhari.

“One of the major killers of our economy apart from corruption is waste. Our scarce resources are being plundered away very carelessly and unnecessarily wasted. Let me give an instance, presently, there are more than 6 aircraft in the presidential fleet. What do you call that? Billions of naira is budgeted every year for the maintenance of these aircraft not to talk of operational cost and other expenses.

You may want to ask what a Nigerian President is doing with so many aircraft when a Prime Minister of Britain fly around using the same public aircraft like an ordinary Briton.

Go and check and compare with that of any developed country in the world, the office of the Nigerian President is a very expensive one inspite our high level of poverty, lack and joblessness. Despite all these, you still find a Nigerian Minister spending about N10billion to charter an aircraft for just one year. Now, for me, when we come into office, all these waste will be blocked and properly channelled into our economy. We intend for instance, to bring back our National carrier, the Nigerian airways. We shall do this by bringing all the aircraft in the presidential fleet into the Nigerian airways and within a year increase the fleet into about 20.

More from: http://www.osundefender.org/?p=217159
Budget for presidential aircraft for Buhari, Osinbajo nearly doubles to N7.3 billion

The Federal Government has proposed to spend N7.26 billion on the Presidential Air Fleet, PAF, in the 2018 budget proposal, details by the Budget Office of the Federation have shown.

Of the amount, about N4.3 billion was proposed for recurrent expenditure, while N2.8 billion would go for capital expenditure.

The proposed expenditure is about 67 per cent higher than the N4.37 billion appropriation in the 2017 budget, which consisted of N3.97 billion for recurrent and N399.5 million for capital projects.

In the current proposal, which is subject to the approval by the National Assembly, at least N1.58 billion was set aside for the overhaul and maintenance of five aircraft on the fleet, from about N2.9 billion budgeted for capital expenditure.

SignalNG1:
December 23, 2015
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Wednesday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Mohammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.

“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hot bed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ”every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.

“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mohammed, however, said that though there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature if insurgency globally.

“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory

“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.

“It is our turn as civilians to give them our support; to realise that the war they are fighting is not their war alone, but our war, hence we must own the war.”

The minister disclosed that a national security campaign had commenced to raise awareness among Nigerians about the war, the sacrifices of our troops, and how to stamp out the remnant of the war.

“Jingles are being played on national radio and television as part of the campaign in order to keep the media better informed about the war, so that they can also better inform Nigerians,’’ he said.

Mohammed also said that an ad-hoc committee, comprising media representatives as well as intelligence agencies, would be inaugurated to regularly be updated about the war in order to better inform the public. (NAN)

As for the OP, my concern is how we went from so much promise in 2014 to a basket case in 2019?

LRNZH:
In 2001 the world began talking about the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - as potential powerhouses of the world economy. The term was coined by economist Jim O'Neill, who has now identified the "Mint" countries - Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey - as emerging economic giants. Here he explains why.

So what is it about the so-called Mint countries that makes them so special? Why these four countries?

A friend who has followed the Bric story noted sardonically that they are probably "fresher" than the Brics. What they really share beyond having a lot of people, is that at least for the next 20 years, they have really good "inner" demographics - they are all going to see a rise in the number of people eligible to work relative to those not working.

This is the envy of many developed countries but also two of the Bric countries, China and Russia. So, if Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey get their act together, some of them could match Chinese-style double-digit rates between 2003 and 2008.

In terms of wealth, Mexico and Turkey are at about the same level, earning annually about $10,000 (£6,100) per head. This compares with $3,500 (£2,100) per head in Indonesia and $1,500 (£900) per head in Nigeria, which is on a par with India. They are a bit behind Russia - $14,000 (£8,500) per head - and Brazil on $11,300 (£6,800), but still a bit ahead of China - $6,000 (£3,600).

If you noticed, I said I was an adult by the 1990s, I never encountered the Pound economy. I did not mention the foreign companies making money from Nigeria since before the 1960s because I did not see the need to mention them. My argument is simply,"why the unnecessary fascination with Okonjo Iweala in the face of a government without any economic understanding or agenda".

The original post is how Nigeria has been losing money and investments since 2015. Your counter was to shift the blame on NOI and Harvard trained economists.

However, Nigeria has been reaped off way before NOI and still is after NOI. Between the times I can remember till date, her period was the best. Buhari has been in power before and is in power now. What has he done? For 5 years nothing but blame NOI and you seem to blame her for the companies which has been reaping off Nigeria since 1500. Private individuals are not saints anywhere in the world. These companies also reap off their home governments.

Your argument seem to assume an inherent goodwill in man. Human beings are selfish and need control and that is the responsibility of the government. The relevant question is, what is the economic agenda of this present administration for Nigeria. Blame GEJ and NOI?
Such an excellent post.
I wish nairaland could be dominated by such comments instead of the trash that litters the front page about yeyebrities and their fake life plus politicians and their propaganda. Zero on policy. Zero!

nigerianvenom:
Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano and the immediate past governor of the Central Bank (CBN), says President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement of the CBN foreign exchange policy encourages corruption.

Lauding Buhari’s removal of “wasteful and corrupt fuel subsidies”, Sanusi said the current forex policy endorsed by the president encourages similar rent seeking and corruption which trailed the subsidy regime.

“He (Buhari) has put an end to the [crude] swap regime which is also one side of rent-seeking and corruption . . . he has made the NNPC start producing accounts, so there is greater transparency,” Sanusi told Financial Times.

“These measures are good for the economy and display strong political will to change the system. But getting monetary and fiscal policies right will be crucial for broader progress in structural reform.”

FT quoted the emir as saying the president’s anti-corruption stance was “totally inconsistent” with the foreign exchange regime he supported, adding that it “encourages corruption and rent-seeking similar to the fuel subsidy regime”.

The emir, who was CBN governor from 2009 to 2014, expressed his displeasure with the monetary policy regime which he said has “very obvious drawbacks that far outweigh its dubious benefits”.
