Anambra Int’l airport project financed by state govt, not FG — Adinuba ON JANUARY 20, 20213:31 By Nwabueze Okonkwo, ONITSHA Anambra state government has debunked a statement recently credited to the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika to the effect that the on-going Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport project located at Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state is among 10 airports in the country being built by the federal government. The state Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba in a press statement, said although the federal government appreciated the need for an airport in Anambra state given the huge population and the universally acknowledged business dynamism of the people who constantly travel around the world, the on-going Airport project is being developed and financed solely by the state government. Adinuba noted that the supposed claim by Sirika, before the Senate Committee on Aviation that the Federal Government is building 10 airports in the country, including in Anambra State, much as the state government is convinced that the minister was misrepresented by the report published in an only one national daily, the state considered it imperative to state certain key facts about the on-going airport development in the state for purposes of historical accuracy. Also read: INEC fixes Anambra governorship election for November 6 According to Adinuba, “The Federal Government is not building any airport in Anambra State, The project which is one of the two biggest airports in Nigeria, with its runway covering 3.7 kilometres long and its control tower made up of 11 storeys, the tallest in Nigeria, the project is solely the brainchild of the state government”. “The airport which will be ready for commissioning in April, this year, is the most modern in Nigeria, designed to revolutionize commerce in Nigeria, particularly export and import business. Anambra people are easily the greatest importers in West Africa, and the people have 63 major markets, including the famous Onitsha Market, the biggest open market in West Africa. Modern and big as Anambra State International and Passenger Airport is, the state government is building it without a loan from any financial institution anywhere in the world”. “The other mega projects being executed by the state government without credit facilities from any financial institution include the International Conference Centre in Awka, with 10,000 – sitting capacity, the largest in Africa, and the Awka City Stadium”. “However, the Federal Government has been very cooperative in developing the airport. The state government, for instance, has been working closely with the Federal Civil Aviation Authority, FAAN and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA to actualize the gigantic project”. On October 5, 2020, Governor Willie Obiano, after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at State House in Abuja, visited Minister Sirika where they discussed progress on the airport. James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Aviation, subsequently issued a statement with the caption “Sirika lauds Gov Obiano as Anambra Cargo Airport Ready in April 2021″. It read in part: “The minister said that the project will positively impact on the economic development of the state and the Southeast region as a whole and that the Federal Ministry of Aviation and its agencies will always give the necessary guide and cooperation to states embarking on such projects in order to ensure that all internationally set standards are met”. “According to Sirika, airports can be viable if they are built with specific objectives in mind, and expressed the belief that the Anambra airport will be successful in serving the interests of the trading population of the state and environs”. “Chief Allen Onyema, chairman of Air Peace, West Africa’s biggest airline, is among aviation chiefs who have visited Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport in recent days and expressed strong views about the vision and foresight and commitment of the state government in building the airport which will last for up to 100 years because of the quality of the materials and the competence of the contractors. “The people and government are delighted that the state is now living up to its reputation as the Light of the Nation”. Anambra to work With Air Peace to bring Embraer Service Centre to the State The Anambra State government has set in motion the machinery to work with West Africa’s leading airline, Air Peace, to get Embraer of Brazil, the world’s fourth largest civilian aircraft manufacturer, to locate a service centre for Africa in the state. Though the details of the state government’s move are not yet made public, it is understood that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has since last year been in talks with the Air Peace founder, Chief Allen Onyema, to get the Brazilians to cite the service centre at Anambra International Cargo Airport at Umueri which is still undergoing construction. At the delivery last week of Air Peace E195 –E2 in Lagos, Chief Onyema made a passionate appeal to the Brazilian embassy in Abuja to advise the Embraer Corporation in Sao Paulo to build a service centre in Nigeria to cater for the African region. The brand new plane, registered as 5N-BYF, is the first in 13 Embraer aircraft ordered by the airline for its African regional routes. “As the first carrier in Africa to purchase Embraer’s E series, which is the latest, Air Peace, with our support, is in a strong position to lobby the manufacturer to bring such a centre to our state”, Governor Obiano said today in a virtual discussion with some members of his administration working quietly on the project. Anambra International Cargo Airport, the second biggest airport in the country, is designed to accommodate at least one hanger to service different kinds of aircraft, according to Air Vice Marshall Ben Chiobi (retired), Special Adviser to Governor Obiano on Creative Security and a former Nigerian Air Force pilot who also used to be the military attaché at the Nigerian Embassy in Paris, France. When he visited the airport last August, an impressed Chief Onyema pledged to build a hanger there. “If Air Peace builds a hanger there and Embraer follows suit with an African service centre, the vision of building this modern and large airport on a very large swath of land will have been realized”, stated Chief Obiano. “We didn’t set out to build just any airport, but a strategic one which will help boost traditional commerce in our state and beyond, but, quiet importantly, result in technology transfer and in the transformation of our economic landscape”. Meanwhile, the state government has described Chief Onyema as the greatest current promoter of private diplomacy in Nigeria. “Onyema”, said Governor Obiano in a message to the Air Peace chairman following the acquisition of the new plane from Brazil, “has shown that you need not be in government or hold any public office to effectively promote the interests of your country. “It is not just in Brazil that he has boosted our reputation far better than any person but also in such places as South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates where Air Peace flies into regularly, with plans to start flying into the United States, India, Israel and the United Kingdom shortly. “What is more, the excellent safety record of the carrier and the efficient ground and onboard services it provides, coupled with its schedule integrity, have all combined to make it compete effectively with the best airlines in the world. “We are proud that Chief Onyema, a worthy son of Anambra State, is championing African economic integration, a Nigerian foreign policy plank, through tireless opening of regional routes. “This is to say nothing about his promotion of national integration and unity by flying every hour to all parts of Nigeria. “Air travel in Nigeria would have been extremely difficult if not for Chief Onyema who is not driven by the profit motive but service to humanity, starting with fellow Nigerians”. Air Peace, which commenced commercial operations in 2013, has 30 aircraft in its fleet, with 23 more expected from both Embraer and Boeing Corporation of the United States, the world’s biggest aircraft manufacturer. Tolls May Return , Owerri-Onitsha, 11 Highways Set For Concession The Federal Government will on Friday (today) receive the Outline Business Case Certificate of Compliance for 12 pilot federal highways billed for concession. The concession of the roads may also signify the return of toll gates as concessionaires will have to recoup their investments. It was learnt from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in Abuja that the 12 roads were under the ministry’s Highway Development Management Initiative. Our correspondent gathered that the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission would hand over the certificate to the ministry today at the FMWH headquarters in Abuja. It was further gathered that the 12 highways combined represent about 1,963km and less than 5.6 per cent of Nigeria’s 35,000km federal highway network. The 12 routes of the pilot phase include Benin-Asaba, Abuja-Lokoja, Kano-Katsina, Onitsha-Owerri, Shagamu-Benin and Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga. Others include Kano-Shuari and Potiskum-Damaturu, Lokoja-Benin, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Ilorin-Jebba, Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta, and Lagos-Badagry-Seme border. A document on the objectives of the HDMI stated that the initiative would attract sustainable investment/funding in the development of road infrastructure. It said the HDMI would maximise the use of assets along the right-of-way and develop other highway furniture. The HDMI, according to the ministry, targets to develop an ecosystem along the federal highway network by bringing multi-dimensional resources of skills, finance, technology and efficiency into national highway governance. It stated that the home-grown initiative would become the lasting solution to the development, management and maintenance of Nigeria’s 35,000km federal highways. Source: PUNCH newspapers |

Innoson To Aid The National Gas Expansion Programme. The National Gas Expansion Programme(NGEP) is key to the survival of Nigeria as a nation in the coming years. It is establishing systems to utilise the natural gas that we have been flaring for the past 70 years for energy as well as for the production of other petrochemicals needed for local and international markets. INNOSON KIARA ACADEMY was invited to provide solutions for the training component and to start a pilot scheme. As we make this all important transition to gas, we will need; 55 million gas cylinders (new models made of Polymer resins from our petrochemical plants). 300 million burners for cooking gas cylinders using recycled metal scraps in the country. Apart from saving scarce foreign exchange, this will create lots of jobs in the process. Endi Ezengwa CEO Innoson Kiara Academy
