THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION HAS CONFIRMED THAT IT APPROVED THE RUNNING OF ONLINE DEGREES THROUGH THE NEWLY INTRODUCED NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES E-LEARNING PROGRAMME IN FOUR FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES. The four universities as listed by the commission are the University of Uyo; National Open University of Nigeria; Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and University of Maiduguri. Director, Information and Public Relations of NUC, Mr Ibrahim Yakasai, however, warned that the commission maintains its stand that online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment. He added this ban does not include the four universities earlier mentioned, which have been duly approved by the commission as the pilot institutions for the Nigerian universities e-Learning programme run within the shores of Nigeria. NUC had blacklisted about 57 illegal universities in Nigeria, with some of them running online degree programmes in affiliation with some foreign universities. But Yakasai said the Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme is a legitimate and well thought-out pilot e-Learning initiative. It is a public-private-partnership between NUC, Park Associates e-Learning Group and the four federal universities. He added that its goal is to provide new opportunities for students to access university education in Nigeria. He said the students enrolled for the programme could select any of the following undergraduate degree programmes: Economics, Banking & Finance, Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing, for which they have requisite qualifications. NUC in its weekly bulletin obtained by the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja said: “The Commission wishes to use this medium to allay all fears and doubts concerning the legitimacy or NUC endorsement of the Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme. “This is one of the avenues that the National Universities Commission is exploring to increase access to university education without compromising quality. “Students in the programme are therefore advised to continue to pursue their studies without fear, and prospective applicants are encouraged to enrol. “Concerned parents, guardians, students and the general public may contact the commission for further clarification on the programme,” it said. |
NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION APPROVES 4 UNIVERSITIES TO RUN E-LEARNING DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA; 1) UNIVERSITY OF UYO 2) NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA (NOUN) 3) USMAN DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY, SOKOTO 4) UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI (UNIMAID) |

Condolence message from a friend and colleague.... ADIEU DR. ADEDEJI LIADI ABIODUN Yesterday started normally for you like that of every other person, you ate breakfast, lunch with friends even prayed Dhur and Asr with people who witnessed and saw you very active. I suppose to meet you today Sunday at 7.30am as normal and usual, but Allah sent for your soul at exactly 6.40pm on Saturday 11-03-2017 when you were jogging then collapsed. Dr. LIADI, you just about to submit your PhD dissertation for viva-voce, your impact upon every one of us was second to none, you transformed the Nigerian students union of IIUM a.k.a NISCOM to the very best, your leadership style and role convinced someone like me who didn't use to participate in NISCOM activities. You stood by me personally and to everyone generally, I remember you snapped pictures and recorded clips by your humble self during my viva-voce not minding you were the president of the Nigerian students in IIUM. I insisted before you agree to take just a picture with me that day, you just want to make sure everything go on fine and normal. You personally encouraged and instructed me to apply for a lecturing job in your university in Nigeria, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) you make sure I sent my application for recruitment and even introduced me to your boss (Dean, Faculty of Economics, NOUN) should incase I need helps or any other logistics. Just to become a lecturer like yourself. Dr. LIADI, words alone cannot express how much you cared and showed me love since the first day I met you in 2014 when we enrolled as PhD candidates same day, you never mind the far gap and your rank as a lecturer in Nigeria, you showed me respects like we were in the same level and as if we were in the same age bracket, Which I used to caution you about it Sir. Indeed, National Open University of Nigeria has lost one of their best lecturers, Ibadan has lost a great son and Ikorodu, Lagos has lost one of their law abiding landlords. I just can't control tears back into my eyes. Dr. LIADI may you rest in peace as I ask Almighty Allah to grant you leniency and clemency. How I wish you can wake up now and say, you only having a nap. "No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, non does he know in which land he will die. Indeed, Allah is all knowing, All aware" (Surat Luqman verse 34). REST IN PEACE DEAR DR. |

Amina Abdullahi : The Grandmother of Eight Who Bagged First Class From NOUN Amina Abdullahi, a student of Gulak Community Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Adamawa State made history when she clinched a First Class degree in Islamic Studies at the January 2016 convocation ceremony. The mother of 12 and grandmother of eight gave deaf ears to all those who discouraged her from studying in NOUN and took a bold step to embark on her degree programme which she couldn't undergo at a younger age. Shortly after commencing her programme, there came an attack on Gulak town by Boko Haram gunmen in October 2012. Several people died and many others were wounded. Fear became the order of the day in the entire community. This attack, which was prominent on communities in the north-east, especially in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states, resulted in the postponement of examinations in all the study centres in these states. January and june 2013 examinations were postponed until January 2014 when "special" examinations were conducted. This seeming set back did not deter Amina from working hard to achieve her goal. In August 2014, Madagali was captured by Boko Haram militants. On September 5th' Gulak was similarly captured and few days later, Michika, where Amina lived with her family. On Friday, September 13th, at about 5:30 pm, Amina, her husband, children and grand children were forcefully driven out of their home. She lost everything except her laptop computer, which she carried along as they ran for their lives. Amidst sorrow and panic, they took refuge in Yola for some weeks. As the attackers advanced and came close to yola with the intention of capturing the state capital. Amina's husband moved the family to Kano. In Kano, Amina kept in touch with her centre director and his assistant, who kept encouraging her not to give up on her studies. She persevered and did her TMAs and also wrote her exams. During the insurgents' attack, Amina lost two of her brothers-in-law, two family members and 20 close neighbors, all of whom were brutally killed. The trauma was terrible. Despite the bitter experience, she encouraged herself and heeded the advice and encouragement of her study centre director, Mrs. Hawa Hirki, to be strong and face her studies with the belief that what is worth doing is worth doing very well. "Thanks to Allah, through His mercy and will, I was able to pass my TMAs, exams and wrote my project with 'A' result, under the supervision of Dr. Bello A. Bello of Bayero University, Kano, "Amina said as she expressed her profound joy when she heard that she made first class. This student is an example of hard work, resilience and dedication. Despite all odds, she still completed her studies within four years. Kudos to Gulak Community Study Centre too for remaining focused despite all the horrible experiences they went through during the attack. By Liapari Ben Hirki Source :Nouedu.net
