Breast self examination is a way you can check ur breasts for changes such as lumps or thickening.It includes looking at and feeling your breast.Any unusual changes should be reported to a doctor.
Most times people tend to ignore BSE maybe due to ignorant on the procedure or they do not understand the importance of BSE.It should be noted that early detection of breast cancer increases greatly the chance of survival of the patient.
Furthermore,the things one is expected to look out for during self examination are unusual lumps in the breast,cysts that may contain fluid and tumour,skin changes,nipple discharge and general appearance of the breast.
BSE should be done monthly.Check your breast about one week after your period.If your don't have regular periods, it should be done at the same time every month.
PROCEDURE
This is done in two phases; standing and supine(lieing down with face up)
Looking for Changes(opposite a mirror)
1. With hands at side while standing erect,look for changes in shape and colour by checking for skin changes,dimpling, and nipple discharge
2. Raise hands over the head, and check front and side veiw for dimpling,puckering and symmetry
3. With hands on the hip,press down and bend forward opposite a mirror.check for nipple direction and general appearance of your breast.

Feeling for Changes(lieing down with face up)
Lie down with a towel under your right shoulder and raise right arm a little above the head,use the pads of the three middle fingers of the left hand;
1. examine underarm to lower bra line
2. examine across to breast bone,up to collar bone and then back to ampit
note: hold hand in bowed position and move fingers in dime-size circles.
3. Examine entire area using vertical strip pattern
finally check with your right hand in the same way.if there is any lump,knots or unusual change please report to your doctor immediately.
Remember early detection is the key to survival.
