I have sorted them from when they were small and not growing but they started responding positively till now that they re 150g
As par feed
I started with vital feed 2mm (¹/2 bag)
Then Coppens 3mm (2bag)
Topfeed so far since for then (8bags)

I almost got stranded in getting food sometimes earlier so I bought 2kg aller aqua to feed till I bought the feed back.

nice one. I guess its another lesson that u can achieve between average of 300g- 500g in two months. However , which of d floating feeds did u use? And as for d smaller once, sort them into a separate pond, get livstovit and aqua pro, mix with their feed, and feed dem with it. What is ur target size? Note that not all ur fishes will grow to d same size . regards

Hello house, here is update on my start up farm as promised when I started with a lot of help and guide from all.... My fishes are between 300g/500g (30/35cm length) though still some lots of small ones with 150/200g sizes.
10weeks old (bought at 7weeks)
Total feed so far =10bags(floating feed)

Yes I have read a lot on the benefit and dangers of salt on Catfish management I only used 3spoon of salt in each pond whenever I change water

Thank you sir I will do that and get back, though there were some that I had been treating some small ones that I sought for assistance on the thread 2weeks ago, I used salt, tetracycline, livetovit, and even one fish booster, they just didn't change or improve. I'm cutting off attempt on them.
Will sort those ones and resume 2mm for them.

i am not your boss.Sort d smaller ones somewhere,revisit feeding them with 2mm then add aquapro with livestovit to their diet.After 2-3weeks lets get a feedback. Any that refuses 2 show significant improvement,will definitely be a liability.Length is what we call facial or face validity,that one is good for a buyer that wont bother to weigh(mostly big men),but who most farmers deal with are market women,general/average naija,its weight that matters & that is called content validity.Also species differ

Thanks boss, I notice there are smaller ones amongst them they do take d 3mm like others but not certain abt that, can i sort them out and revisit 2mm most of my fish especially the big ones are around 100g but that's majorly the bigger ones I didn't weigh all I just picked a few randomly and weigh them last weekend
Another question their length and weight do they commensurate because I have some smaller ones with weight equaly compared to a bigger one

i wont condemn or justify your management,neither will i condemn or justify the breeder or his/her fingerlings or juveniles u bought,but let me give u mine observation from d data you gave.If u have a bit experience,using 12litres for each fish,to grow out,your pond will contain 488.If u have only used 37.5kg,if they are all 100g,your fishes haven't done 2 badly.Next time dont be in hurry to skip 2mm(lot for young fishes to gain from that school).Fish farming is beyond releasing & putting water,read the rhythm of your fishes,it differs from batch to batch,place to place

I have read so much on this thread still reading though and have talked and chat with so many pro farmer and experienced one about the feeding and I have finally come up with the math to Calc the total num of feeds.
To achieve a table size average of 1kg each
X=(Nos of fises x 1000G)/15kg
X=number of bags of feeds assuming u intend to use floating feeds all thru
So multiply X with the current or projected market price of each bag(note prices varies according to size and manufacturer)

I've been an adept follower of this thread for some time now and I've finally decided to venture into this business. presently I'm in the planning stage and I'm writing a business plan. I need to incorporate the cost of feeding into my plan. Can anyone please give a detailed analysis of the cost of feeding from fingerlings to maturity. God bless you as you do so.

I have 4ponds 10x3x3, 5x3x3, 3x3x3, 5x3x3ft
Stocked 500 fishes all together
Feeding so far
2mm(half bag=7.5kg)
3mm coppens(2bags=30kg) they are current about finishing the last bag
I believe I have very good water management as I change the water by flow thru almost when the water is a bit dirty or not clear and most night if I have light I do flow through for long hours before I sleep

that should be 2,553 litres,what number did you stock my brother & how much feed(kilogram) have they consume? from there we could know what happen really,but i wont fault any to declare if runt or not,though growth looks slow. lets examine what you have done,so hopefully we could learn from it

Pls a short concern as a new farmer to be cleared with assistance please, I have a 6weeks old Catfish sorted into 2ponds (300/200) their average size as at the last time I sort them is about 100g and some don't feed well especially the 200set, Their lengths are like 5-8inch and I have identified some few ones I'm about concluding to be runts as they just refuse to grow..

Are these normal or smaller for their size

N. B. I bought them at post fingerlings stage 7wks old

they are part of your investment and hence it will not be entirely fair to ignore them esp since u dont want to luz them. my suggestion; please get any of the following; livstovit, aqua pro or fishvite. these are multivitamins and appetite stimulant. in addition, they will also increase rate at which feeds eaten are converted and thus helping growth. as long as infections are ruled out, expect changes. regards.

n:b what type of feed are you using for them?? (important)

No I don't but if you can help with their contact or the cost of making the local feeds

Good morning great farmers and business men/women,
Pls i need help and guides on a situation, my fishes are like a 6weeks now started with fingerlings, but there are some few ones that just didn't grow they still remain tiny, I have sorted them out ND put them in a trampoline small pond separately and feed them but I noticed they barely eat and will just swimming around only sometimes come up as if to sniff the food and go downs again.
The food only seem to sinking and desolvkng eventually.
Pls any help; though they are few I am not ready to loose them I would like to find a solution to it and make them grow as well as learn for the sake of another time.

Hello house still the novice farmer with a lot of questions.....
Pls i saw the local feed (pix attached) at the market has anyone tried it before and confirm it's tag and reliability since I'm still studying how to get and make my own local feed, and I might not want to risk my harvest with my experiments.

Congratulations on the mile stone achievement, be sure to solidify that walls by filling the block holes with concrete/stones/gravels/sand.

It's great but if you are intending to go 1250 you should split it into the 4ponds to avoid over crowding, else some fish will not feed well and will have to result to sorting them out separately for separate care and feeding.

Net covering is perfect to guide against predators.
The roof I'm not sure it's necessary as that might be extra cost u can make Ur net cover half canopy half net instead.

Hello House great morning. I have been following and evetually started my pond construction of 8x16x4. Picture is attached. I was inspired by what I read hear, what I saw in my brothers farm and the abundance of magots in my present pig farm. Pls I will appreciate any criticism and advise to move this ministry to permanent site.

Pls i would appreciate a step by step. Guide to making my own nutritious local feeds as I have seen many talk about its advantage. Ingredients and process I don't mind a typical sample that has been used before I still have 2months away before I start feeding my fishes local but if I can practice and get it right I would like to feed them. My own formulations.

I know somewhere in the thread this might have been mentioned Pls direct me to the page or share with me if available.

I believe yes it will automatically cause discomfort and indigestion as the water will get polluted easily, the fish will not have enough room to swim and exercise freely and even to feed well.
Though Catfish have the tendency to adapt in harsh and out of water conditions but if you subject them to such for too long yes they will get weak and die.

If you are having a problem with water supply it will be in the best interest of you and your business to secure a pump and water source even if at extra cost.

Yes I did with chicken manure for 3days and washed with water and foam only, then soak for 48hra before refilling with water and stocking

One thing is fishes don't grow equally. You have done well in sorting them out.

Please how did you treat your pond before stocking? Did you fertilise it with chicken manure before stocking too?

First be patient and get a notepad as u read thru the thread there is a wealth of information I am certain if u are patient and willing u would start up safely and we'll, and can draw up you Financials, in other ways if you are actually been scared or careful of making a mistake I have seen some people share contacts on helping to construct pond or can even help u with the startup and guide u till you are good to go. But read well browse more, take notes and don't rush into it, baby steps first. Fish business is lucrative but can be disastrous if careless with it.

Secondly I sorted my fish tonight and just a few are smaller seems not to be eating and growing like other and they are too few to take a whole pond so I improvised as shown in the picture below Pls kindly advice or comment on this I am hoping to keep them and feed them for 1-2wks in this situation hoping they will improve before I return them to the fold.

Ur question is not very clear but if u mean changing to another feed brand, then there is no problem at all with that.
N. B. I use topfeed too, its okay. There is no 'best' feed out there.

Can someone advice on effect using different brand of feeds at different level as I'm trying to manage cost and also Pls any advice and comment on TOPFEED Product for 4mm & 6mm

I have been hearing quite so much about this CP testing being a new farmer, I'm actually an engineer so I am sincerely grateful to you guys for sharing a lot of information both personal, technical and business wise; so back to my question how do you perform a CP testing and if not going to be too long a thread can some help with how to make your own local feed of good quality. If you are taking water from that stream I will advice you pass it through a filter even if it's clean and odorless, to avoid sediments and algae or sis you can't see instantly with hate eyes. Such as the one I used below

You need a bricklayer basically someone with experience and depending on the positioning in your compound you want to construct it require careful and experienced hand to implement it, but you must supervise it strictly. You can buy ready made vibrated blocks of size 9inch from first coach make sure mixed gravel if filled in it to make it strong as against collapse.

But first you need to map out your location and intended sizes of pond like mine being an indoor pond plus I had gravel already cost me like 160k though with tiles and a special waterproofing mix to give the cement strength and repelling against water absorption.

Faith I believe is a personal act and choice, NYSC on the contrary is a social and national act which can't be stopped for d sake of any faith be it Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, tradition or any. There is a choice to participate or postpone Ur participation of the NYSC if it conflict with your personal schedule, therefore this call is not necessary as it might eventually arise to something else giving to the various and random situation the country is experiencing at the moment. A United Nigeria and peaceful one is what we need.
The activities of the 3weeks on camp sure wouldn't be comfortable for those fasting but u can always concentrate on this holy exercise and go with the next batch where u will enjoy it and participate conveniently.
