https://www.persecutionblog.com/2007/06/muslim-rule-in-.html 29, 2007 Muslim Rule in Nigeria’s Kebbi State Chokes Church For Kebbi state pastor Nuhu Mamman, to become a Christian was to have a death sentence passed on the life he knew: converting killed his past, and his future appeared moribund as family, friends and fiancée abandoned him. Raised a Muslim, Mamman received Christ as a young man in 1969. Learning to read and write using only the Bible, Rev. Mamman never attended elementary or high school but ended up attending seminary and becoming pastor of a church with over 2,000 members. Converts to Christianity still face humiliation and stigma, he said. “We are always being forced to transfer former Muslims who have become Christians to other parts of this country in order to shield them from persecution,” Rev. Mamman said. Obtaining places for converts from Islam to worship is problematic; the state finds pretexts for preventing construction of churches or demolishing existing ones, and Muslim extremists burn down sanctuaries. |
https://www.worthynews.com/2258-more-churches-destroyed-in-northern-nigeria-2 MORE CHURCHES DESTROYED IN NORTHERN NIGERIA Sharia-related Tension Continues to Breed Violence by Obed Minchakpu GUSAU, Nigeria (Compass) -- At least five churches were destroyed during February in northern Nigeria as the controversial implementation of Islamic law continued in several states. St. Dominic's Catholic Church was demolished on February 14 in Dashi, a village located 12 kilometers from Gusau, the state capital of Zamfara state. Zamfara Governor Alhaji Ahmed Sani had forcefully converted the church into an Islamic school in January. Christian Leaders told Compass that some of the persons who attacked the church have been arrested and that it has been confirmed that they were instructed to carry out the demolition by unnamed Muslim leaders in the state. The attackers were said to be angered that Christian leaders criticized the conversion of the church to an Islamic school. However, Alhaji Kaka Abdullahi Dashi, the Muslim village chief of Dashi, said nobody contacted him before the church demolition was carried out. He also said he had always lived peacefully with his neighbors irrespective of their religious persuasions. Zamfara State Police Commissioner Aaron Ibiloye said that police had arrested three suspects, all Muslims: Bala Musa Amulle, Umaru Helema, and Mamman Tunlubuchi. Ibiloye said that the suspects confessed to demolishing the church building. The three are being held in custody while they await trial. Governor Sani declared Zamfara an Islamic state in 1999, despite protests by Christians in Nigeria against the introduction of Islamic law. Christians hinged their protests on the fact that the Nigerian Constitution forbids states from adopting any religion as the state religion. On February 24, riots in Gombe town of Gombe state by Muslims primarily from the Shia Islamic sect resulted in two churches being burned and an unknown number of deaths. The police would not disclose the number of Christians killed during the riots for fear it would incite reprisals from the Christian community. Gombe State Deputy Commissioner of Police James Duke said the rioters set ablaze Calvary Baptist Church and another church and destroyed other Christian property. He said they were protesting against the visit to Gombe on February 20 of the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria. At the same time, they were pressing for the implementation of the Islamic legal system in the state, Duke said. The deputy police commissioner told Compass that five rioters were killed when they attacked policemen who were trying to control the rampage. Police officials said they were forced to use live bullets to quell the riots when they discovered the rioters had sophisticated military weapons to attack Christians and other unsuspecting members of the public. Forty Muslims were arrested. They are being held in custody awaiting trial. Police did not specify what types of weapons the rioters carried. Gombe State Governor Alhaji Abubakar Hashidu confirmed the killing of five persons and said the situation has been brought under control. He maintained that he had no right to refuse to receive a visiting ambassador accredited by the Federal Government of Nigeria and could not condone the riots. But he assured Muslims in the state that his administration would implement the Islamic legal system and urged them to be calm. Governor Hashidu disclosed that books on Islamic jurisprudence have been obtained by the government in preparation for the implementation of the Islamic legal system, or "sharia." He has directed the "khadis" (Islamic judges) to prepare for the application of the Islamic penal code in the state. Gombe state has continued to experience sharia-induced violence despite assurances by the government that the introduction of the Islamic legal system would not undermine the peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians. Late last year, 25 persons were killed in Muslim-Christian clashes. Also in February, two churches were burned in Hadejia town of Jigawa state during a religious conflict. St. James Anglican Church and a Pentecostal church were set ablaze by Muslim extremists demonstrating against the existence of churches in a sharia state. |
Borno To Demolish Churches For The Construction Of Housing Units apprehensions among Christians in Borno State following attacks by the Boko Haram Islamic sect has taken a new dimension as the state government intensifies efforts to demolish over 20 churches and schools built by the churches. The development has therefore continued to fuel speculations about the desperation to Islamize the country beginning from Northern Nigeria. Our correspondent reliably gathered that “the state government will embark on the demolition exercise any moment from now.” Sources hinted that the Borno state government has already dispatched a notice to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and owners of farmlands in the area, intimating them of the plan to acquire the structures for a 1000 housing units. A leaflet from the office of the Borno State Ministry of Lands and Survey dated August 20 and signed by one Musa Ummate (O/C Land Administration) on behalf of the commissioner was obtained by journalists on Sunday in Abuja. The leaflet is entitled: “Notice of Acquisition and assessment/valuation of structures on proposed site for 1000 Housing Units along Gubio Road Highway.” It reads: “I am directed to refer to you farmers and holders of structures on the proposed site for the matter captioned above and regret to inform you that the executive governor has by the power conferred on him by Section (2)b of the Land Use Act 1978 directed through high powered committee on construction Ref. no: HPCC/2500/HE/S/TEC/1 to notify you of his intention to acquire your farm lands and assessment/valuation of the structures on the proposed site situated along Gubio Road, Maiduguri. “The acquisition is necessary in view of requirements of the land by the state government for overriding public interest to construct a Housing Estate. The affected farmers and holders of structures are to take note and appear on site for the above exercise, please.” However, our correspondent learnt from reliable sources that the state government has no plan to develop any housing estate but to destroy the churches and over 20 private schools built by the churches. A source said, “Over 20 churches and many schools will be affected. The lands on which the churches were built were bought from farmers and they have the authority and certificate of the District Head in Maiduguri popularly called Bulama. The land was not under the Ministry when it was bought. “The Christians went for the meeting called by the governor and for several hours, the governor didn’t come out to see them. It is always difficult for Christians to get a land in Maiduguri. Even after getting the land, the government won’t give you Certificate of Occupancy. They compensated all Borno muslims who were victims of Boko Haram. But how many Christians were compensated?” When contacted, the General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake, confirmed the development but called on Borno State government to have a rethink. He said, “We have seen that eviction notice from the Borno state government. We are all Nigerians and there are other places where the state government can develop. The areas being earmarked for demolition are already developed with churches and schools. http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/21166-tension-in-maiduguri-as-govt-moves-to-demolish-20-churches,-schools.html |
May 11, 2001 BAUCHI, Nigeria (Compass) -- The Bauchi state government in northern Nigeria has threatened to demolish two churches for zoning violations. An April 28 letter from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Environment accused the churches -- Deeper Life Bible Church and Spirit Life Assembly International -- of illegally occupying areas "officially designed for residential use," and asked them to close or be demolished. Both churches are located in Bauchi City, the state capital. The Bauchi state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reacted to the threat by accusing the state government of hindering the development and growth of churches and Christian activities. Rev. Dauda Marafa and Rev. Iliya Hassan, chairman and secretary of CAN, said the threat to the churches has shown a systematic strategy adopted by the state government to persecute Christians since the introduction of "sharia," or Islamic law. The Christian leaders petitioned the Bauchi State Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Environment to stop the planned demolition of the churches to avert what they called "a quagmire in the state." In their letter to the commissioner, the CAN officials stated that the two churches had acquired their certificates of occupancy (C of O) from the government in regard to the land where the churches were built. "That church (Spirit Life Assembly) bought (the land at) No. 5 Corowa Road, Commercial Layout, off Maiduguri by-pass Bauchi -- it is covered by C of O No. 2051," the letter stated. "It offends our sensibilities that you refer to our churches -- in properties duly acquired by us -- as unlawful activities, when mosques are springing up without proper acquisition of land." |

https://believersportal.com/nigeria-jigawa-state-government-demolish-churches/ Nigeria: Jigawa State Government Demolish Churches Nigeria is currently at number 12 on Open Doors World Watch list of Christian persecution. Persecution of Christians in Nigeria’s northern states appears to be on the rise again with reports that churches are being demolished in the state capital of Jigawa, according to World Watch Monitor. The Redeem Christian Church of God and the Lord Chosen Church in the capital Dutse are the latest to have been bulldozed,Civic authorites said they were demolished because they had not been registered. Rev Yakubu Musa, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Jigawa, said that during the demolition, police blocked church doors to stop members entering, and chased off any they saw trying to take photographs Musa said: “It was a terrible experience, with so many Christians who witnessed the demolition crying. I felt so bitter because we were in a situation where you have been cheated and you cannot talk.” He said there had been no notice of demolition. He also insisted the leaders of both churches had applied for the necessary permits to exist, but had been refused.Six more churches have been earmarked for demolition by authorities in Jigawa State.World Watch Monitor Neither church was new. The Lord Chosen Church was 17 years old and the Redeem Christian Church of God had been there for eight years. Musa added: “I was very angry because there were two mosques in that same place, but none of these mosques were demolished. There is also another building belonging to a Muslim person, which was marked for demolition, but they only concentrated on the church buildings because we are not many and we don’t have anyone in the government to speak for us.” “They just came in unexpectedly and they demolished everything. Nobody was allowed to remove any valuables in the church buildings and other nearby properties,” said Musa. Both churches had applied for official registration documents, he said, but the government had refused to grant them. In all, more than 30 churches in the state are in the same situation, having applied for but been refused registration documents. |
Fourteen Churches in Zamfara State, in Northern Nigeria are now facing demolition threat by the state government, which claims that there are too many Christian worship centers in the state. Zamfara state, which spearheaded the adoption of Islamic law in northern Nigeria contrary to the country's secular constitution, is predominantly Muslim, populated with less than a five percent Christian population. The Chairman of the State Christian Complaint Commission, David Ishaya said last week in an interview in Kaduna, northern Nigeria political headquarters, that the State Commissioner of Lands and Housing, Alhaji Hassan Nasihu gave the directive for the demolition. Among Churches slated for demolition in Gusau, the state capital, are the branches of Deeper Life Bible Church, Mountain of Fire and Miracle, Assemblies of God and Winners Chapel whose leaders have been invited for a meeting ahead of the demolition. Apart from churches in the state capital, the Anglican Church in Kaura, Namoda, has been sealed up following disagreement over the ownership of the land of which the over 30 years Church was built. Ishaya quoted the Commissioner for Lands, as saying that there was need to drastically reduce the number and curtail the growth of Churches in the state. The Catholic Church and the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) according to the Commissioner have enough land to themselves and the other denominations should merge with them. "Life in Zamfara is traumatic for Christians" the Chairman of the Christian Complaint Commission stated arguing that contrary to the state government's propaganda, the Sharia legal system was meant to annihilate Christians in Zamfara state. He said Christians in Zamfara must be allowed to live as free citizens and practice their faith as provided for in the country's constitution. https://www.worthynews.com/590-14-churches-slated-for-demolition-in-northern-nigeria |

Muslim extremists destroyed several churches and a pastor's house in the latest religious violence to hit Nigeria's northern Kano state, church representatives and rights activists said Friday, May 21. One of the buildings and the pastor’s house were set ablaze on the premises of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) at Kwasam, in the Kiru Local Government area, while another building under construction was demolished, the church said. Local Christians estimated that over 100 young people were involved in this week's attacks in the predominantly Muslim area. Reverend Lado Abdul, who chairs the ECWA in Kano, linked the violence to youth who had abandoned the church after they "were converted to Islam." He said local Muslims objected to the presence of his church in the region. Right group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), which has closely monitored the case, said the ECWA Church leadership had earlier been forced to appear before a Shari’a court. INDIGENOUS TRIBES "Since its members are from tribes indigenous to the area, the church argued that the land on which the church stood was their inheritance, adding that they had nowhere else to go. Nevertheless, the court ruled in favor of the complainants." Earlier the Baptist Church in the area of Banaka, Takai LGA, was also destroyed on May 15, CSW said, adding that "The church has now faced demolition on four separate occasions." "After the previous demolition, a group of Christians from Kastina State paid for the construction of a new building, and also drilled a well for church members to use. However, during the demolition, the well was blocked off completely," CSW said in a statement. CSW National Director Stuart Windsor National Director said the demolitions "violate Nigeria’s constitutional and international legal undertakings to uphold religious freedom and freedom of assembly." While nobody was injured in these incidents, the attacks have underscored mounting tensions between Christians and Muslims in the country, where thousands have died in recent years in sectarian clashes. https://www.worthynews.com/8159-muslims-destroy-churches-in-nigeria-kano-state |
