Housing top billionaires in the country, the state’s political power houses have taken hints to throw weight on overthrowing the incumbent party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
Although APGA currently sits as the incumbent, the 2021 election will be a top tight tussle between APGA, PDP, YPP and APC.
Here is a complete analysis of each party’s aspirant(s) gunning for the seat of the governor come 2021 by News9naija. APGA’S ASPIRANTS: The most visible aspirants under APGA are Prof Chukwuma Soludo and Stanley Uzochukwu among those who have indicated interest directly or indirectly for the party’s 2021 Ticket.
Prof Soludo is taunted by many as the Governor’s choice for the party’s ticket. This insinuation gained momentum when the governor appointed him to chair the Anambra vision 2070. Stanley Uzochukwu: https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Stanley-Uzochukwu-1024x597.jpg Stanley Uzochukwu is a Nigerian business magnet, investor and philanthropist, Chairman and CEO of the Stanel Group. The Stanel Group is an energy company with huge commanding presence in Awka, the state capital.
Mr Stanel has indicated interest to run for the Anambra 2021 guber unde the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). He is believed to have the backing of the first lady of the state Osodieme who wields a substantial influence in the running the state.
However, the big question remains, “will either of these two aspirants help APGA retain its political grip on the state or has the time come for an end of late Odumegwu Ojukwu inspired and self acclaimed Igbo party?
PDP’s ASPIRANTS: PDP has always been a top contender when it comes to Anambra politics. However, various internal party problems keep making the party’s shot at power a mirage which includes but not limited to zoning and arriving a consensus candidate.
According to Mr Oseloka Obaze, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), “What PDP requires to win the 2021 governorship election in Anambra is to produce a good candidate that will enjoy popular acceptance and support rather than yielding to zoning appeal,”
“…For PDP to succeed, it must present its best candidate and a united front, the zone from which the candidate emerges notwithstanding.“
PDP has the highest number of marketable candidates for the gubernatorial election with the likes of Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Dr Godwin Maduka, Dr Godwin Ezeemo and a host of others.
The house of representatives member is believed to be a loyal party man who has remained in the party since its formation . If the clamour for Anambra South to produce the next governorship candidate sails through, he is highly favoured to pick the ticket, there are also rumours that the Anambra south billionaires are solidly behind his aspiration and are willing to support should finance be his problem .
Dr. Obiora Okonkwo entrance into the race, shattered all political equations, including the clamour for power to return back to the south .
Believed to have the financial war chest to not only win the primaries, but also match whoever the state governor presents in the election proper. The only obstacle to his candidacy, is the clamour for power to return back to the south .
Sen. Ekwunife is one politician that can pull surprises especially when underrated. Her ability to compete with the male dominated politics leaves every one is awe and amazement .
It is believed that if the field is thrown wide open, without a consensus , she possesses the ability to bulldoze her way through .
Her aspiration may be hindered by her gender, and the fact that she is seen as having the penchant to contest for any available office . The unresolved zoning arrangement will also affect her aspiration.
The philanthropic Doctor has a very slim chance of winning the PDP ticket, not because he is not qualified but lacks the needed political exposure to lead the PDP in the state. Seen as a new comer to the party, stakeholders may not be comfortable to hand him the ticket of the party.
But then, in politics anything is possible including him picking the ticket .
Though a new entrant into the political foray, he has since stamped his presence . he is believed to have similar traits of the former governor of the state Mr. Peter Obi, the average Anambarian believes he has all it takes to lead the state.
If handed the Party ticket, which appears slim, he will surely make a good candidate for the PDP, but the problem is, are the stakeholders willing to hand the ticket to someone perceived to be a new comer to the Party. He may be the dark horse in the race, should those regarded as heavy weights fail to agree on a consensus, as his candidacy may be the one that may be considered by all to be neutral .
In terms of finance, it is believed he could get a boast from the business community where he has considerable friends as the CEO of transcorp. Godwin Ezeemo: https://www.news9naija.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Godwin-Ezeemo-1024x816.jpg Godwin Chukwunaenye Ezeemo is a Nigerian businessman and politician, chairman of The Orient Group of companies.
The chances of Ezeemo has been limited by his perennial aspiration to rule the state under different platforms .
If he fly the ticket of the PDP, they stand a slim chance of winning the state.
APC’s Aspirants The All progressive Congress (APC) is one of the political parties with low rating in the South East. Any candidate that would be running for the Anambra govership election in 2021 would have to contend with the problem of the party’s acceptance in the State.
Other than the problem of acceptance, APC has no fieldable candidate to stand the likes of Ekwunife, Soludo, and Ifeanyi Ubah.
One of the party’s notable figure in the state Dr Chris Ngige has said he is too busy with his national assignment as a minister to start eyeing “a provincial job” ruling out the party’s chances of fielding him in the 2021 governorship race.
He said .“I don’t have interest for now in Anambra governorship because I am on a national assignment. I am Minister of Labour and Employment of the federation and I am the chief conciliator of all labour disputes for now. And you can see that with the economy going into doldrums and shaking, the cynosure of all the effects of economic trouble is industrial disputes“.
With the fact established that Ngige won’t be running, APC is most likely to field Andy Uba who has indicated interest to run for the governorship election of the state.
Andy Uba will likely not be a good contender for the govership seat as his party is less popular in the state.
YPP’s Aspirants The Young Progressive Party (YPP), a newly registered political party during the 2019 general elections did impressively well. Winning one seat out of the 109 seats in the Nigerian Senate.
Though a new entrant in the game, YPP has proved how formidable it can be with the personality of Ifeanyi Ubah. YPP is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in Anambra politics.
Ifeanyi Ubah was removed as the senator representing Anambra South by an FCT High Court but was reinstated by the Appeal Court and affirmed by the Supreme court.
Senator Ifeanyi is sure to fly the ticket of the Party, and by doing so, he may be doing the PDP a good deed, should PDP finally pick someone from central, because, he is sure to beat any candidate from the South . His influence in the south is not in doubt at all.
The Enugu State Fire Service has commenced the decontamination and fumigation of Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing newsmen during the exercise on Saturday, the state’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr Okwudiri Ohaa, said that the exercise would last until Sunday.
It would be recalled that the state fire service carried out the first phase of the exercise in the market on April 1, shortly after the market was shut down by the state government to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
During the first phase of the decontamination of the market, the exercise was monitored by Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and heads of security agencies in the state.
Ohaa said that the state government had been consistent with the exercise to ensure that “the fight against COVID-19 is won in Enugu State.”
He maintained that the decontamination would be a continuous one, saying that “when the market reopens, it will be a weekly event.”
He advised residents to continue to adhere strictly to all precautionary measures for containment of COVID-19.
Ohaa said the guidelines on personal hygiene protocol by World Health Organisation (WHO) and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), among others, should be adhered to.
Reacting on behalf of the traders in the market, the Chief Security Officer, Mr Justus Ezebinagu, commended Gov Ugwuanyi for the initiative to decontaminate the market for the second time.
Ezebinagu gave an assurance that the traders would comply strictly with the government’s precautionary measures as well as the laid-down protocols by WHO and NCDC.
“When we were told that the governor directed the fire service to come and fumigate the market, the traders were happy because this is the second time they are coming to fumigate the market since this pandemic started.
“We thank our amiable governor for coming to our aid. We are happy.
“Even though the market is partially open for now, we believe that our governor is going to do more in our collective interest,’’ he said.
Popular Onitsha-based Prophet, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere Odumeje has tendered unreserved apology to the people of Awka, Anambra state capital over hurtful statements he made in viral videos on their mode of worship.
The controversial cleric popularly known as Odumeje also apologized to the people of Arondizuogu in Imo state for allegedly vowing to put a stop to the Ikeji festival of the community. Odumeje in separate viral videos in April, also allegedly attacked Arondizuogu people, describing them as fetish, just as he attacked one of their prominent sons, Pericomo too.
For Awka, Odumeje described their masquerade festival, Egwu Imo Awka as being fetish and a means of worshiping monkeys, which is the symbol of the god.
In one of the videos, Odumeje was seen boasting that if he came in contact with the monkeys worshiped by Awka people, he would destroy them.
Though Odumeje’s community, Orsu in Imo State had written to the communities involved, tendering apologies, he had maintained silence, with more videos where he attacked the communities trending on the social media.
But in a statement issued on Saturday by the pastor himself, Ohanaemere described the people of both communities as peace loving who he claimed to had known and shared fellowship in his church over the years.
He however said the experience had thought him that ungaurded utterances with divisive tendencies needed to be checked.
The statement partly read, “My attention has been drawn to the publications on social media over the alleged face-off between me and the good people of Awka and Arondizuogu communities in Anambra and Imo state respectively.
“In the said posts, I was potrayed as declaring war on the people of these communities and their respective traditional festivals and beliefs, It was also alleged that I had vowed to destroy Imo-Awka festival and put a stop to the Ikeji festival of Arondizuogu.
“Consequently, upon the above, I wish to acknowledge that the people of Awka and Arondizuogu Communities are peace loving and I have over the years come to share fellowship and service in church with a great number of them.
“These two communities and their renouned indegenes have been known and recognised as major contributors to the development of their states, Igboland and the nation at large.
“Awka and Arondizuogu communities have produced great men and women of integrity and pedigree and have always remained at the top of great sons and daughters of Igbo land.
“Against this backdrop and with every humility as a Servant of the Living God, I sincerely apologise to the great people of these two communities, to the entire people of Igbo land and to my Elders for my utterances.I will not make any attempts to justify my statement as even I can see that it is hurtful in all its ramifications.
“I also want to specially apologize to the family of Mazi Pericomo of Arondizuogu who I understand until his passing was a diligent servant(Evangelist) of God. I apologise and put it on record that this experience has thought me that words that speak any form of divisive conversation amongst our people MUST be checked. This is a time for unity, love and unwavering support for each other.
“Similarly, I lend my voice to the directives of the federal and state government in observing all the COVID-19 protocols, while waiting on the Lord for the end of the pandemic.”

It would be recalled that as fallout of the recent meeting the Enugu State Government held with market leaders and security agencies, it was unanimously agreed that the Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, will be partially reopened on May 4, 2020, in the overall interest of the public.
This was after leaders of the two market associations undertook that they will strictly abide by the agreed conditions and protocol issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) "which includes the observance of social/physical distancing, high level of personal hygiene and the compulsory use of face masks".
Unfortunately, the conditions were violated today, the first day of the partial reopening of the market.

“During the lockdown, I reached out to the Governor of Lagos; His Excellency; Babajide Sanwo-Olu who magnanimously gave me;
~290 bags of rice, ~750 bags of Garri and ~500 cartons of Spaghetti
to which I also added other materials in my personal capacity to augment. I personally supervised the distribution of these palliatives to our people in Lagos.
“Some of the Governor’s aides were also on ground to witness the distribution.
“Hunger remains a huge threat to the peace, stability and security of every society, this is why me must continue to assist more citizens, especially the poor and those whose livelihood depends on daily income.
“This will not only ensure that Nigerians adhere to the movement restrictions, it will also help prevent crime and social unrest while we fight to control the spread of the virus in our country.
“I want to commend His Excellency; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the courage and pro-efficiency he has brought to bear in fighting this deadly virus. It is worthy of note to thank him for also giving other prominent Igbo personalities and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo (Lagos) palliatives to distribute to our people in Lagos. I urge them to distribute these palliatives effectively so as to cushion the the effects of this pandemic on the rest of our people.
