HealthWhy We Must Prioritize Dementia Care In Our Communities -tonte Abban by AquaBekee(op): 8:58am On Apr 14, 2025
Why We Must Prioritize Dementia Care in Our Communities -Tonte Abban

According to World Health Organization, dementia is rapidly becoming a major health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa, with over 3.9 million people currently affected, and the number expected to rise to over 14 million by 2050. In Nigeria alone, more than 1 million people are living with dementia, a number that will grow as life expectancy increases and age-related conditions, like stroke, improve survival rates.

Despite this rise in prevalence, dementia remains widely underrecognized and misunderstood, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare access.

The increasing number of dementia cases in the region is largely due to the aging population and improvements in healthcare. However, in many African communities, symptoms like memory loss and behavioural changes are often misunderstood. These signs are sometimes dismissed as normal aging or wrongly attributed to supernatural causes, such as witchcraft. These cultural misconceptions prevent early diagnosis and effective treatment, leading to individuals suffering in silence or being misdiagnosed.

Additionally, the lack of trained healthcare professionals and inadequate healthcare infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa compounds the problem, leaving many without the necessary care.

A critical but often overlooked aspect of dementia care is self-care. In African societies, caregiving for elderly relatives is primarily a family responsibility. While this model offers emotional support and preserves cultural continuity, it can also lead to caregiver burnout, especially when families lack the knowledge or resources to provide adequate care. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health conditions, including dementia, discourages families from seeking professional help, leading to isolation and neglect of dementia patients.

Given the scarcity of formal care systems in many African regions, it is essential to embrace practical self-care strategies. Establishing a structured daily routine, which includes regular meals, physical activity, and proper sleep, can help dementia patients feel more secure and reduce confusion. Engaging in physical activities like walking, gardening, or dancing, which are common in many African communities, can alleviate depression, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall well-being.

Additionally, mental stimulation through activities such as storytelling, traditional games, and music plays an important role in stimulating memory and improving brain health. A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, is also vital for managing dementia progression and maintaining cognitive health.

Efforts to improve dementia care are underway, with organizations like Alzheimer’s Disease International working with governments and NGOs to raise awareness, educate caregivers, and integrate dementia care into national health policies. In Kenya, community-based programs have been successful in teaching families how to care for dementia patients and reducing stigma. However, these initiatives need to be expanded across Sub-Saharan Africa to meet the growing demand for dementia care.

Despite progress, significant challenges remain. In rural areas, where healthcare infrastructure is still inadequate, and the high cost of treatment makes it difficult for families to access the care they need, dementia care continues to fall short. Additionally, cultural stigma and financial barriers discourage many from seeking help, leaving patients isolated and underserved.

[quote]Tackling dementia in Sub-Saharan Africa requires a comprehensive approach. Governments, healthcare institutions, and international organizations must collaborate to raise awareness, train caregivers, and improve healthcare resources. Prioritizing dementia care is essential for enhancing the quality of life for millions across the continent and ensuring that dementia patients receive the support and care they deserve.

Tamuno Tonte Abban is a healthcare advocate and a registered nurse with over 13 years’ experience with a focus on geriatric care, mental health and learning disability, working to raise awareness about dementia in local communities.

PoliticsNANS Under State Capture, Now Seyi Tinubu’s Political Tool, Group Warns by AquaBekee(op): 3:10pm On Mar 20, 2025
NANS Under State Capture, Now Seyi Tinubu’s Political Tool, Group Warns

A transparency campaign group, Leadership & Accountability Initiative has condemned the umbrella body of students in the country, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for allowing itself to be hijacked and captured as a political tool by those in government.

The group particularly accused the son of the President, Seyi Tinubu of planting moles in the association to advance political gains, warning that the disappearing influence of NANS is inimical to citizens' right to hold divergent opinions.

In a statement on Wednesday, the lead Convener of the group, Hon. Ibrahim Bako expressed disappointment with the response of NANS to a "constructive" criticism by Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, the son of the Governor of Bauchi State, saying NANS' position reflects a disturbing trend that has unfortunately overtaken the association.

"It is deeply troubling to see an association, which is supposed to champion the rights and welfare of Nigerian youths, reduce itself to a mouthpiece for the interests of those in power. Your statement in defense of the president’s son, rather than focusing on the core concerns and needs of Nigerian students, exposes how far NANS has strayed from its mission. You have allowed yourself to become a mere political instrument, lending your voice to those in power, while abandoning your responsibility to question, challenge, and advocate for the issues that truly matter to Nigerian students and youths", Hon. Bako stated.

According to him, NANS' mandate has always been to fight for the improvement of education, the betterment of the living standards of students, and defend their rights but expressed dissatisfaction that the association'recent actions indicate that it has abandoned these core functions, instead focusing on political partisanship.

"Your position, defending a hollow gesture of distributing sachet foods while ignoring the larger systemic issues of youth unemployment, engagement and empowerment is not only a disservice to the students you are meant to represent but, also an insult to their intelligence. The youths of Nigeria deserve better than political gifts and short-term reliefs. We deserve the dignity of real support: quality education, sustainable business opportunities, meaningful scholarships, and an environment where we can thrive without relying on charity or crumbs thrown from political tables", he noted.

He therefore called on NANS to return to its roots, reevaluate its role in the Nigerian political and social landscape, and refocus on its core mission of representing the interests of Nigerian students and youths and not political figures or their families.

He said time has come for NANS to recognize that the Nigerian youths do not need political favours or empty gestures, rather a lasting changes in the education system, an economy that allows youths to thrive, and leaders who are genuinely committed to the welfare of every Nigerian.

A significant advantage of investing in Liberia is its dual currency system, which utilizes both the United States dollar and the local currency. This framework simplifies transactions and mitigates risks associated with currency fluctuations, making Liberia an attractive destination for investment. Moreover, the current administration, led by His Excellency H.E. Joseph Boakai Sr., is dedicated to ensuring that Liberia works for the benefit of its people. The government has strategically appointed young, dynamic, and intellectually astute leaders to key positions, aiming to steer Liberia back on a path to sustainable development.

Our interactions revealed a strong commitment to creating a conducive business environment that fosters growth and innovation.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., President of Liberia, for his invitation and support; to Hon. Oretha Juah Bestman-Yates for her warm hospitality; and to all government officials who facilitated our visit. The farewell reception hosted by Hon. Macdella Cooper and Ambassador Julie Endee was a fitting conclusion to our productive mission.

We are optimistic about the future of our collaborations and the potential they hold for mutual growth and prosperity. GIAA remains committed to galvanizing the African diaspora and encouraging investment in the continent as we strive to build the Africa we envision.

I have spiritual power to fish out armed bandits, Pastor Adegboye Gabriel Olabisi Who Prophesied Tinubu Victory Assures

Men of God are special breeds of humans. They are vessels used by God to bring answers to certain knotty questions in our homes, groups and nations.

Pastor Adegboye Gabriel Olabisi, the Senior Pastor of Worksword of God Church was no doubt called by God to be His mouthpiece in speaking truth to all nations and converting generations of servants to God.

In his decades of service to God and humanity, Pastor Olabisi, the convener of Save Nigeria Network has through God's anointing set the captives free, restored hope to the desolate, heal the sick and brought liberty to enslaved souls, ABUJAPRESS reports.

Through him, God has revealed to man things that will happen in the future even before they take place. The man of God has the spirit in him.

He prophesied about the emergence of Bola Tinubu as the candidate of APC long before the election and he also prophesied that the Lagos former governor will become the nation's leader, a prophecy that has since come to reality. There is a book he published to that effect. " The emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the 16th president of Nigeria ".

The God's servant in his 2027 revelations, prophesied on the secret to ending insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria and to restore peace and stability in the country. He stated that with a collaboration campaign with the security authorities, he can use his God given power to stop armed bandits and terrorists in the country,

He is the author of so many books including Africans in Diaspora, Nigeria, indivisibility of a nation. He has also through his growing presence on the social media continued to preach the word and turning lost souls to God's instruments.

He preaches against insecurity which he backs with a call for kidnappers, arm robbers and sponsors of all forms of insecurity to resist.

The man of God also preaches happy union and the need for families to live in unity and peace so as to have a stable society.

Special Seat Bill: Political Parties National women leaders converge , advocate for passage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dCDtwSJArk?si=DOsWTUzjsL83ExFx

Women groups and stakeholders in the country's political system have urged the National Assembly to expedite action for the swift passage of the Bill currently before it, which seeks to reserve political seats for women.

At a 3-day conference in Abuja, stakeholders said the speedy passage of the bill will assist in harnessing the potentials of women to enhance efforts to develop the country.

The conference organised by National Women Leadership Forum of Political parties in Nigeria (NWLFPPN) was in collaboration with office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Westminster's Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and UK International Development.

The event also featured public presentation of the National Women Leaders Forum's Operational guidelines.

The National Women leader of NWLFPPN Mrs. Amina Darasimi Bryhm said that the event is fundamental and critical in building women's confidence and making sure that the bill is passed.

She urged all political leaders both at the state and National levels to demonstrate capacity for gender inclusiveness by supporting and making sure that the bill was passed before the 2027 general elections.

"This event is very important as it brings together key critical stakeholders. The passage of the seat Reservation Bill Is a critical step towards ensuring that women are adequately represented in the administrative and political structures", she stated.

A resource person from Rwanda Mrs. Donna Karthazi gave an analogy on the efforts made in advancing the participation of Women in politics and governance in her country.

She said it took a concerted effort, intentional approach and holistic support from all stakeholders in Rwanda to achieve the milestone. She went further to say that Rwanda has about 45 percent women representation which is much larger than what Nigeria has.

An activist and former Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Mrs Ene Obi frowned at what she called intimidation and humiliation meted to a member of the National Assembly, Sen. Natasha Uduaghan by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio. She decried the constant discriminatory actions against women by the Senate President and hinted that women will not take it lightly.

The Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Kalu who sponsored the seat reservation bill and still championing the special seat bill appealed to women to always embrace dialogue at all times.

He acknowledged that the level of women representation in the Nigerian Parliament isadopt persuasion abysmal and unbearably embarrassing compared to other African countries, including Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa etc.

He advised that the women should approach rather than protest to achieve their political aims

President of Abuja Jabi Lakeside Celebrates Rotary Club at 120

Today, we celebrate our family, Rotary at 120,g having been birthed on 23 February 1905.

Paul Harris and his friends, Gustavus Loehr, Sylvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey gathered in Chicago, USA and formed the Rotary Club of Chicago, so that professionals with diverse backgrounds can exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian services.

As we celebrate them and what they stood for, it is pertinent that we note that these were professionals who sought for an avenue to meet so they could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Little did they know that their humble gathering in Chicago will eventually metamorphose into a global movement that has, and continues to transform millions of lives across continents.

Dear Rotarians, Rotary stands for Service Above Self. It celebrates fellowship, integrity, diversity, leadership, and service. Over the past 120 years, Rotarians before us have carried the torch of service in education, healthcare, peace-building, disease prevention and eradication, and numerous causes that uplift humanity. In our communities, people have looked up to the magic we create with the things we do. By tackling global challenges like eradicating polio, and more recently, the malaria scourge, Rotary has remained steadfast in its commitment to making the world a better place.

Today should not be just about parties. We should note that the responsibility of upholding Rotary’s ideals rests with us. The foundation of Rotary has been laid by Paul Harris and his friends; it is our duty now to build upon it. We must continue to embrace selfless service, foster ethical leadership, and work tirelessly to address the pressing needs of our communities.

Unfortunately, we cannot continue to pretend as if we are unaware of the sad reality that some of us – leaders, that is – have fallen short in ethics, and other expectations of leaders. Some of them are so shameful to listen to, and a celebratory day like this will not be nice to share some of those stories. Subsequent editions of my writing may lay some of those antics bare, in the hope that people will read, reflect, and realign their behaviours.

How can we, in our various clubs, committees, and districts, strengthen the impact of Rotary in our communities? How can we innovate and adapt to the changing needs of society while staying true to the core values of Rotary? The answers lie in our collective resolve to serve with greater dedication, to mentor the next generation of Rotarians, and to constantly expand our reach to those in need.

Today, to celebrate Rotary@120, 12 members of RC Abuja Jabi Lakeside donated $120 each to The Rotary Foundation. This is in addition to two members who made donations of $1000 to become Paul Harris Fellows, PHF, swelling our PHF rank to 35. We are grateful to these selfless Rotarians.

As we mark 120 years of selfless service, let us rededicate ourselves to the virtues of Paul Harris and his friends. Let us continue to be light in places of darkness, bring joy in moments of gloom, hope in moments of despair, and a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves. The journey is still far, but we must run our lap, and ensure that Rotary’s legacies of service endures for generations to come

Happy 120th Anniversary to Rotary International! Cheers to all of us.

Vive le Rotary!!!
