PoliticsRe: Why Is Nigeria Not Working? by Arogunmasa(m): 10:15am On Feb 26, 2009
WHY NIGERIA IS NOT WORKING.

1. From historical approach, Nigeria is not working because it a subject of british creation.
Nigeria as we come to know it ; is as a result of colonial interest. Consequently, the almagamation of 1914 was done to feed the industries of the british empire. If there had been no forceful merger peharps it would have been a diffrent ball game today. Because when people federate the desire to form a union must be apparent, that is when they will be able to forge ahead and accomodate their cultural differences. The almagation of 1914 did not take all these into consideration; it was done to facilitate the plunder of raw resources but did nothing to unite the northern and southern nigeria.

2. In the colonial era, during our experiment at nation building, histroy indicated that regional boundaries were created along ethnic lines. It is my view that it helped fostered the mutual ethnic suspicion that have asumed dangerous height today. It is not uncommon to hear a Niger Deltan looking at the actions of those in corridors of power as a coy to keep them perpetually out power.

3. I think this applies to all African countries. Africans are not been Africentric enough, before the advent of the white man there are sysytems of government in place in most african society. our inability to africanise western practises; to tailor it to our own peaculiar needs is a minus.

4. People are not participating in governmet. Some will say their votes do not count, i say that it is not enough for you to vote but must guard that vote. when you cast your vote dont go back home and sleep. Stay at the polling booth and make sure ballot papers are counted, the numbers recorderd. by so doing u have make our vote count. That is the only way you can decide your true representatives.

5. People must demand accountability from government. It is your right to be informed.

6. This is tied to no.4 above if u dont get the electoral process right you will have a flawed election. it is apparent that one who is not chosen by popular votes cannot be answerable to the electorate. he has to do the bidding of his paymasters. So if nos.4&5 is fulfiled then no.6 will not occur.

This is my humble submission.

@chidichris

Arogunmasa,
two friends went into the bush and saw a sleeping lion, one said they shld run for their lives and one said he read in a book that lions are harmless when ppl pretend to be sleeping. the other one accepted having read the book but was afraid the lion itself might not have come across the book.

ur quotations and references fail to the solutions to our problems and not the causes of our problems.

this thread is about who the problem is and not what the masses are surpose to do.
if we have accepted the fact that our leaders have failed on their side or if we have accepted that the leaders are the cause of our problem only then shall we seek solution.

i will like u here to first of all identify the problem. is it the masses or the leaders before talking about solution. it is not possible to solve an unknown problem.

again, if there is any solution one is suggesting, i will still refer the person to the saying; leadership by example. if u want us to die to bring a change, show us the way to die.

all i know is, nigerians are not like the jihadist leaders who will preach to others to die via suicide bombings while they run away from death.

remember; leadership by example.

Arogunmasa says

When a man sells his birthright for a pot of porridge what do u expect?
The problem with Nigeria is followership. U can’t keep on blaming the leaders if they don’t know their left from right it our duty as citizens to tell them so.

Have u ever wonder why they keep on coming back to the electorate whenever there is election around the corner? They need votes,  but sadly most us don’t realize what we’ve got in our hands. They are ready to receive N1000 to cast their votes.

There is strength in number if we can form alliance of common purpose we can wrestle these people to submission. Talking about jihadists, there is a non-violent means of change though I doubt if that can work in Nigeria. America where u pple are going to today fought for their freedom from a tyrant (I think king George of England).

It is duty of the citizens to hold government accountable, failure to do so means u are part of the conspiracy.Nigerians should rouse themselves from their slumber and take control of their country by refusing to accept bad leadership

What we should be trying to do if to re-condition the mind of average Nigerians who have all reigned themselves to fate.

Sovereignty belongs to the people from which this government derives its power declared the constitution of Nigeria. It also said in another section that power belong to the people from whom this government derives its power and authority.
Going by this declaration, it is clear that without the citizens certainly there will be no government.

People deserve the kind of leaders they get. An average Nigerian has resigned himself to fate rather than protesting again his socio-economic woes he seeks solace in religion. Nigerians don’t realize that they are their own worse enemy. Most don’t know that the concept of government encompasses the whole. Though it is not possible for all of to be in Aso Rock, National Assembly but it possible to hold however representatives accountable for their deeds. By staging mass protests, by evoking the power of recall in the constitution we can recall any errant legislator.

The irony of the situation is that the average Nigerian loves the good things of life yet he is afraid to fight his right. If u want the good things of life u have to pay a price. He is afraid to die yet he wants to be free from oppression.  It is not possible for us to practice govt as in the olden day that is why representative govt is the trend. Whether we like it or not it is assumed that we are all participating in the democratic process since we elect representatives to represent us.

Our indifference to government and inability to take collective actions as in no small measure contributed to the mess we found ourselves in. as Montesquieu rightly noted eternal vigilance is a sure guard of liberties, the fact that the people are watching government acts closely; knowing that they will not yield to unnecessary interference will help guard abuse.
