Obviously, the Uncle wants to use you as a baby sitter and may OR may not fulfill his promise. Cases like yours abound in US that the babysitters were in bondage. Good chance with the Nursing education to cross over to US or UK, where Nurses are in demand. Good luck. |

The down side to this material is that highly combustible rating. Flash back to the fire incident in Lekki/Ajah I think not too long ago. POP and all those ceiling finishes spread the fire so fast. Hope the manufacturer provides all pertinent details to consumer. 1 Like |

MARK-REN: This is a bungalow. What will the pillars do here? I think the exterior walls and interior partions are good enough to hold the roof. And if you are thinking bracing like you see with a fence sometimes, the interior partitioning breaks down the wall length & should be good enough. Just my 2 kobo and I yield to my Ogas. 5 Likes |
Islam for Muslims / Re: We Are Losing Our Identity To The Arabs by aseju: 3:57am On Feb 06, 2013 |
OP, your post is spot on. When it says give beautiful names on the naming ceremony day, it is allowing for expression, feelings, gratitude for the bundle of joy given. It can be such as given thanks to the Almighty in my language, eg Oluwaseun. Do I have to go looking for that in arabic language? I dont think so. It is even getting confusing with interpretation. Al-Gafar or Gafar, for example some will say no to it because it is exclusively Gods attribute, the sole giver of forgiveness. (it has to be Abdul Gafar etc) Express yourself as the occasion calls for, afterall another attribute of his is all-hearing (Al Samiu). The name does not make one a muslim spiritually. It may to the outside world. The arabic speak in sermons and writings are another. Dont tell me qadr, deen, khutuba etc. Tell me in English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or whatever you are communicating with. Is that what make one a muslim or just a show off. What does saying "Niyat" mean? Why cant I say my intention in my language? I have seen too many instances of that with the clerics giving different variations of which they expect the follower to cram. You want to pray, fast, or sacrifice, I will say the intention freely in my language. I am with you OP. 1 Like |

Oga Spyder880, I dey hail o. Looking at the pictures of nearby construction (#161 and #166) where the finish grade slopes down, I just want to ask what waterproofing material is commonly used. Considering the block wall will be more porous than poured concrete wall and there is a habitable space behind the wall. Is cement parging or the black tar waterproofing before backfill common? |
Properties / Re: Building A Large Duplex In Enugu by aseju: 6:15pm On Jan 09, 2012 |
Aha, thats my point. The concrete slab will just be butting the Rwall footing or even over it. So it will be pouring the concrete directly on grade as opposed to the process of putting it on found walls. I am just pointing this out because it is usually frowned at. It can also be as impermeable for those other issues as well. Thank you. |

Happy New Year to you all Construction Superintendents!!! Here comes that laborer again with his nagging comments on german flooring. Now, with the condition as drawn on post #131 by baconline, what will support the german floor at the basement level? Or this is going to be slab on grade? I mean if you look at the retaining wall, will the conc slab not spread over its footing. See how the line just stopped at the edge of the footing. Also the issue of termite and water sipping under will be applicable here too on the habitable side of the retaining wall, isnt it? Abeg o it is just my way of saying one cap does not fill all. Depending on the height of the unbalanced fill at the retaining wall, I will think some reinforcement in the hollow block wall will help with soil pressure. I will leave that to my Engrs. From the analysis you gave regarding borehole/kanga, you may have a very high soil bearing capacity though. |
Properties / Re: Construction Of A 10 Story Office Building by aseju: 7:20pm On Dec 02, 2011 |
Oga, thank you o. Some observations - it seems like no below grade occupiable space, 1st floor will be slab on grade? Guessing that is what obtains in that neck of the wood because of water level. I may also want to ask about distances to adjacent buildings, some have openings now and is that going to remain as such along with yours in place? Some existing columns are protected in that foto and I am thinking separation (or none) with those buildings (existing)? Thank you for taking us through this. |

kez007 along with other construction gurus, I salute o. May God bless you all for this and other like-threads. To me it does not matter where this project is. The process itself is a lot to learn from. Me sef I be laborer in Naija terms, however, I don register for the class even though I too dey skip class. My first question is, is this going to be a "steel and concrete" or "reinforced concrete" structure? Thank you. |

Properties / Re: The Real Cost Of Building A 6 Bedroom Duplex (reloaded) by aseju: 8:47pm On Sep 29, 2011 |
diordaves: Thank you for that analysis, however I think a properly sized footing can also do that. If for example I placed the required footing width and thickness on the soil for the structure, it should withstand the piercing or the depression on the soil (assuming soil bearing capacity is OK). I personally dont see the so called "blinding" as appropriate footing thickness in all cases and as such may go with the german flooring to augument the load distribution. But again if I have adequate linear/perim footing, pier footing or whatever, I will put my slab on grade directly, bar any other site condition though. When I put more on my footing thickness before that 4 or 5 layers of foundation wall I may eliminate german flooring. Just my give and take look of the issue. |

spyder880: spyder880, I did not ask for rebars to be used for roof tie down, I simply pointed out the twisted rebars in your foto at post #205, the ones at the top of the columns. Was just asking for its clarification. I am familiar with the use of metal straps not metal ropes. I did not see its placement and spacing around the exterior wall. True, they are usually wrapped from underneath the lintel to around the wood plate atop the block wall. Just my observation o Oga. |

spyder880, Nice of you, taking us thru the roof framing of the project. Good workmanship too from tne carpenters. What is happening with the iron rebars in picture #205? How is the roof anchored or tied down for wind uplift? Thank you Sir. |

Titi baby, Direct this to an infertile couple that has been trying for two or more years and you may get a more down to earth response to your query. I can bet with such dilema on their lap it wont matter if it is a boy or girl. Just a healthy baby will do for them. |

pingu2k5: pingu2k5 and others may want to learn from Obinoscopy's entry on this HIV issue. Yes, HIV+ women that were pregnant have delivered babies free of the virus when managed from the get go. No the babies may not end up to be HIV+ I think about 3 months into the pregnancy they usually start them on the appropriate medication till about full term when they deliver by ceasarean. I understand going thru it the normal childbirth increases the risk, thats why they go under the knife. The babies are tested from birth till about 12 months and found out to be negative. As for the spouse, there is the IUI or the IVF procedures that help place prewashed sperm in the woman so there is no "direct deposit" so to speak. As it has been mentioned, with the medications available nowadays, it is has been likened with other long term diseases. People, get the awareness. |

Oga, that is a tall order o but reach-able. How do you fair with the income now as a bachelor? If the lady in question will bring in sometin then you may be looking at shared responsibilities for a start i.e. somebody pays rent etc, somebody buys food stuff etc. One room face-me-i-face-u should do and hold off on having kids for now. Both of you have to be committed to this union because life go hard small o. But then what have you done or planning to do to better your lot. If this fits into your goals abeg go for it. |

@ rukatech Interesting! Please I do not intend for you to give out information of this your "bomb shelter" if it undermines it but my queries are - On what floor is this located? Below grade? What are the provisions for ventilation and air conditioning? I understand walls and ceiling will not be exact as the UL specification, but roughly for how long is the holding place designed for? Is the response time of Naija emergency unit considered? Question, question, interesting though. |
Properties / Re: The Use Pillars In The Last Floor by aseju: 5:20pm On Feb 26, 2010 |
aasog, thank you, sir. I agree, the quality of blocks produced nowadays are pathetic. My opinion is where foundation is solid and the structure is of a "pillar and lintel" or "post and beam" construction, the block walls may be relieved of vertical loads. It is the way to go these days not to rely on blocks for deck/multi floor support. I think though good quality blocks (6-inch) can support roof ONLY at top level. |
Properties / Re: The Use Pillars In The Last Floor by aseju: 11:09pm On Feb 24, 2010 |
My design professionals, , and this brings about the next question, do you really have to set that top floor exterior walls out with 9-inch blocks? as is so common. Wont 6-inch suffice for the roof load? |
Properties / Re: The Use Pillars In The Last Floor by aseju: 4:30pm On Feb 22, 2010 |
OKEMKPI: Yes. When installed around the perimeter to also serve for achoring down the roof framing. Rather than relying on only the last two top layers of block. |
Properties / Re: The Use Pillars In The Last Floor by aseju: 4:22pm On Feb 22, 2010 |
You dont necessarily need the pillars to support the roof on the last floor. For example, this is not common with bungalows and yet the exterior walls are adequate to support the roof. |
