Kevin Keegan: England v Spain, 1982

England, who needed a win against Spain to get to the semi-finals, threw on the semi-fit Trevor Brooking and Kevin Keegan, with less than half an hour to go in their second round match against the hosts.
Without having played a minute between them in the tournament, Keegan soon found himself six yards out from the Spanish goal, with the ball at his head.
Blame it on the lack of match fitness or the 80s bouffant, but Keegan, despite being totally unmarked after some admittedly quality footwork, deftly flicked the ball wide.
With that, England were out.

World Cup fever is returning and with it, so is a slew of memories of tournaments gone past.
There’s the glorious moments of unbelievable play: Maradona’s mesmeric dribble through the heart of the England team in 1986; Cruyff’s turn in 1974; Banks’s save against Brazil in 1970.

And, then there’s the howlers: the missed opportunities in front of the goal.
Of course, those that sit in this particular video library of shame are in good company. After all, as the old adage goes, in all of Pele’s greatest moments, he failed to hit the target.
With the 2018 World Cup kicking-off on June 14, with Russia v Saudi Arabia in Moscow, here’s a look back at some of the absolute sitters and wayward penalty kicks missed at the tournament.

EducationFG Set To Sack Unqualified Teachers by ashacot(op): 3:30pm On Jun 10, 2018
http://www.splint.com.ng/2018/06/fg-set-to-sack-unqualified-teachers-by.html

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has urged teachers to ensure they were qualified, licensed and registered before 2019 or be flushed out of the classrooms.
Adamu gave the warning while monitoring the 2018 Batch A Teacher Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) in Abuja on Saturday.
Reports has it that the no fewer than 22,000 would-be teachers are expected to sit for the Computer Based Teachers PQE nationwide scheduled to hold from June 7 to 9. ‎
Adamu, represented by Mr Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary, stressed that if teachers were not qualified and properly equipped, the products who are the students would also fall short and ultimately the country will suffer.
“The person at the centre of it all is the teacher, not the pupils and if the teachers are not qualified and properly equipped then how can they give our children the best.
“So ‎as a government we are insisting that we must raise the standards; we must become like other countries of the world.
“‎We have set a deadline for ourselves and we are going to enforce it.

“If by 2019 you are not a qualified, certified and registered teacher, you will be removed from our classrooms and we will give the job ‎ to those who are qualified.

“It is an embarrassment to us that we have so many qualified people without job and we are given the job to people who are not qualified. It is insane‎.

‎”In the past, we did not have the right numbers, so we appreciate that those not qualified helped us to meet that shortfall, that is why we have given this time of grace,” he said.

He urged the teachers to continue to improv‎e themselves while their employers would do their part to continue to train an retrain them.

The minister noted that some people were opposing the use of computer based test, which he said was not going to be scrapped.

According to him, all over the world, even primary school pupils are using tablets and devices.‎

Adamu said that the world was not going to wait for Nigeria, calling on everyone to be vanguards ‎ of upgrading the standards in our schools.

He said that there were some logistics problems ‎during the exercise, however, the officials had been able to overcome them. ‎
“‎We are overwhelmed by the number of teachers writing the examination, which is a good problem ‎to have.
‎“If we need to do a third diet, we will to‎ it to accommodate everybody,” he said.
Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar, ‎Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), said that the examination was written in 42 centres across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT simultaneously.
‎Ajiboye, however, said that some states started the examination on Thursday, June 7, due to the number of candidates in those states sitting for the exam‎ination.
‎He listed the states include Bauchi, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano and Taraba. ‎
‎‎”In Kaduna state, we have about 6,000 candidates, in Kano about 2,000 candidates, in Enugu 3,600, and Taraba about 2,000 candidates.

“The examination will last for 60 minutes to answer 60 questions.

“We have been getting situation reports from the states that all is moving smoothly. “‎

Ajiboye said that the CBT exam was set based on the different qualification of the teachers, which include NCE, Degree, Masters and PhD holders.
‎He stressed that by 2019 any teacher who was found in the classrooms not qualified, licensed and registered by TRCN would be flushed out. ‎
Many of the candidates, who spoke with NAN after writing the examination, expressed satisfaction with the process and the examination.
However, a few candidates had challenges using the computer and were not able to finish before they were timed out.
No fewer than 900 candidates wrote the examination in the FC

CelebritiesLotto Winner Wears Winking Emoji Mask So No One Can Beg Her For Money. PHOTOES by ashacot(op): 2:47pm On Jun 10, 2018
This lottery winner couldn’t stop smiling mainly because she was wearing a winking smiley emoji mask.
But she probably still had a grin on her face under the disguise considering she’d just won 180,900,000 Jamaican dollars (£1m).
The woman, who was referred to as N.Gray, wanted to remain anonymous because she didn’t want anyone bothering her for cash, including criminals.
Simone Clarke-Cooper, Supreme Ventures Super Lotto assistant vice-president of group corporate communications, said winners were always concealing their identities in the Caribbean country.
She told the Jamaica Star: ‘In other markets, they don’t necessarily do it, but here I think they opt to do it to keep themselves safe.
Ms Clarke-Cooper said they never helped people come up with disguises because they were not creative enough.
She added: ‘They usually don’t need our help, and they are usually very creative, perhaps beyond anything that we could think of or imagine, and it has been very effective over the years.’

Ms Gray revealed to The Gleaner newspaper she was planning to clear her debts and would also build a community centre for young people in her area.
She added: ‘I started buying Super Lotto in January… Now I’ve won, I want to clear my debt, invest, and I want to do some travelling.’
And if you’re wondering why she didn’t collect her prize away from the cameras to avoid being identified, she was apparently obligated to turn up for the press briefing.

PoliticsTROWBACK: See How APC Reacted To Obj's Accusation That GEJ Is Training Snippers by ashacot(op):
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the President Goodluck Jonathan administration not to take Nigeria back to the dark days of the late Gen. Sani Abacha regime, when perceived opponents of the government were targets of rampaging murderous gangs and the country turned to a pariah nation through unbridled human rights abuses.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Friday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party expressed serious concern over the allegations that the Jonathan administration is training snipers at the same facility where the Abacha killer squad was trained; talks of abuse and misuse of the military and other security apparatus for personal and political interest as well as the reported placing of 1,000 people under a ‘political watch-list’

It said the party is constrained to take the allegations very seriously because it emanated from no less a personality than former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in an open letter he wrote to his fellow party man, President Jonathan, which has now been widely circulated in the traditional and Social Media..
”All Nigerians must be worried by these weighty allegations, coming less than 15 years after the long-suffering people had collectively vowed ‘never again’ to a regime like Abacha’s that sent many innocent souls to their early graves and dispatched many citizens into forced exile for merely holding views that were opposed to that of the late dictator’s government.
”We are therefore compelled to call on President Jonathan to urgently address these allegations, which have already sent jitters down the spines of Nigerians, especially those who hold views that are diametrically opposed to the administration’s. The allegations cannot and must not be swept under the carpet, otherwise Nigerians will know who to hold responsible if perceived opponents of the administration come to any harm,” APC said.

The party, however, expressed total satisfaction that more and more people within the ruling PDP were now coming to terms with the real dangers facing the country under their party which, despite being in power at the centre since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, has only succeeded in putting the country in reverse gear and is now threatening its fledgling democracy, following its (PDP’s) implosion.

”We are not concerned by the dirty politics in the PDP and the glaring fact that the behemoth is sinking fast. What bothers us is the impact that the death throes of this rudderless party will have on our fragile polity.
”We in the opposition have shouted ourselves hoarse about the failings of the successive PDP administrations, especially the Jonathan government, in critical sectors of the economy, in particular the worsening unemployment that has put the nation on tenterhooks
”We have said the Boko Haram crisis cannot be resolved by military onslaught alone and that it must be tackled from its roots; that corruption has reached an unprecedented level; that the investments by the oil majors in that sector have dwindled dangerously; that the discovery of Shale oil in the US threatens our economy; and that the government must move fast to check the unprecedented high cases of crude oil theft.
”We have also issued numerous interventions on the victimization of perceived political opponents of President Jonathan, citing the case of Gov. Chibuike Amaechi as a reference point; that the Jonathan administration has taken Nigerians for granted by ignoring monumental cases of corruption and even embracing known corrupt officials as long as their deep pockets can benefit the President’s political machinery, and that the National Conference will not serve any purpose since it was conceived as a political gimmick rather than a genuine effort to help lift our country,” it stated.
APC said it was delighted that these same issues were raised in the letter by President Jonathan’s estranged political Godfather, recalling that a few days earlier, another top PDP bigwig and the nation’s number four citizen, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, had lampooned the Jonathan administration’s apathetic fight against corruption.
”Because truth is constant, gradually but surely, people are rising above partisanship to join those of us who have been warning, ceaselessly, that the ship of state is heading for the rocks because the Captain has decided to ignore the radar and steer the ship blindly even in turbulent waters. This jettisoning of partisanship and the coming out of heads that have been buried in the sand for so long represent a good omen for Nigeria,” it said.

PetsWakekeep/candelit Vigil Planned For Chicken That Was Sole Survivor Of Accident by ashacot(op): 8:05pm On Jun 08, 2018
A candlelit vigil will be held Friday night for a chicken who was the sole survivor of a slaughterhouse truck crash that killed thousands of other birds.
The cock – named June by rescuers who initially mistook it for a girl – died Thursday afternoon despite extensive medical treatment and a GoFundMe campaign, with a memorial in its honor set to take place from 6pm-9pm Friday.

He was rescued from the spill on a road near Summit Bridge, Del., Wednesday while en route to an abattoir.
From there, June was taken to a vet at the Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, who discovered that a broken chest bone was preventing June from breathing properly.
Despite their best efforts, the bird ended up succumbing to a blood infection after receiving $2,000 worth of treatment.

The underside of June’s body was so badly damaged in the accident that it was impossible to determine his gender, but a veterinarian said they believed the bird to be male.
Before his gender was established, Fain and friend Alex Gleason dubbed the cock June, after the main character in The Handmaid’s Tale who was captured by an evil regime as a brood mare, only to escape.

CrimeMan Wrongly Detained For 25 Yrs Gets $10m Reward. Photos by ashacot(op):
A U.S. man who was found innocent after serving 25 years in prison has received 10 million U.S. dollars on Wednesday as compensation.
The settlement set a record for the city of Philadelphia, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, where Anthony Wright, who was 20-years-old when the alleged crime occurred, was sentenced to life without parole for a 1991 rape and murder case.

DNA evidence discovered later proved that Wright was innocent.
Innocence Project, an activist group promoting DNA evidence in criminal investigations, said in a statement that Wright was the victim of poor investigation procedures by the police, who allegedly threatened to beat Wright if he wouldn’t sign a confession written by the police.

The group said Wright now 44, is the 344th DNA exoneree in the nation.
It would be recalled that the Philadelphia district attorney’s office in 1991 indicted a 20-year-old black man named Anthony Wright on a charge of capital murder after describing the crime as “heinous.”
A 77-year-old woman had been robbed in her home, then raped and stabbed to death.

Wright maintained from the beginning that he signed the document only after interrogating officers threatened to “poke his eye out.”
He was later convicted after the jury deadlocked 7–5 in favor of a death sentence.
In Pennsylvania, death penalty verdicts must be unanimous and as such Wright was sent to prison for life without the possibility of parole.

CrimeCouple Who Use Lion They Thought Was Jesus As Their Lawyer Lose Custody Of Child by ashacot(op): 1:21pm On Jun 07, 2018
A couple have lost custody of their child after using a stuffed lion as their lawyer and claiming
it spoke the word of God to them.
The little girl, now aged one, from British Columbia, was removed from their care when she was just a month old and her parents can now only visit her during supervised visits.

They reportedly refused for her to have any medical tests, including hearing tests, blood tests, eye drops and vaccinations because of ‘strong religious beliefs’, a court heard.
The couple argued their rights were violated and they had been discriminated against when a judge ruled their daughter should be taken away from them.
During the court case, they refused legal aid and used the stuffed animal as their lawyer, arguing that Jesus Christ was acting as their witness and judge.

Throughout the case they spoke ‘in tongues’ and when they cross examined witnesses, they said Jesus was asking questions through them.
The court was told that when the woman found out she was pregnant, she told a social worker that her husband had choked her to stop her crying, tied her hands and mouth with tape and occasionally beat her.

Her husband had grown up in a cult and believed sexual relations between children should be encouraged, the court heard.
Shortly after the child’s birth, they were criminally charged with causing a disturbance after police were called to reports the couple were attempting to ‘purge churches of demonic influences’.

There were further concerns over violence in the home and mental health, which were exacerbated when the mother applied to change the girl’s name to ‘Jesus JoyOfTheLord’ and change her own name to ‘Risen Lord Jesus Refinesfire Christ’.
Justice Diane MacDonald ruled that they were not credible and has placed the baby in continuing care, which can lead to children being permanently adopted.

SportsSergio Ramos An Idiot-liverpool Striker by ashacot(op): 1:03pm On Jun 07, 2018
Roberto Firmino has called Sergio Ramos an “idiot” after his sarcastic response to claims he injured two Liverpool players in the Champions League final.
Real Madrid captain Ramos was involved in the first-half incident in Kiev last month that saw Mohamed Salah substituted with a shoulder injury.

Firmino responded to Sergio Ramos’ comments about the Champions League final.
Footage after the game showed he caught Loris Karius with an elbow and scans revealed the goalkeeper had been concussed.

But Ramos wasn’t accepting the accusations, saying: “I am only missing Firmino saying that he got a cold because of a drop of my sweat.”
When the Brazilian striker did have a chance to comment, he kept it short and to the point.
“I prefer not to talk about it,” Firmino said, before talking about it.
“It’s OK, [Ramos] is a champion. But I think it’s an idiot thing of him to say.”
But Ramos suggested the criticism of him was down to jealousy after he lifted the Champions League for an unprecedented third season in a row.
He said: “When Ramos does something like this, it sticks a little bit more.
“I don’t know if it’s because you’re at Madrid for so long and win for so long that people look at it a different way.”
