All is set for the 3rd Agribusiness Roundtable International Conference, which will take place from Sunday, 27th October to Tuesday, 29th October, 2024, at the prestigious Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The conference, which has as its theme: "Unlocking Agribusiness Opportunities for Economic Sustainability," promises to attract key stakeholders, innovators, and global leaders in the agricultural sector and will offer a unique platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices aimed at advancing Nigeria’s agribusiness landscape.

According to a press statement issued by Howard Usen, South-South Zonal Coordinator of the Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro-Industry Development Initiative (NAADI) and Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, the event will bring together over 500 delegates, including industry experts, policymakers, and investors from various parts of the world.

One of the key highlights of the three-day conference will be the groundbreaking ceremony for the Centre for Innovative and Sustainable Agriculture (CISA), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The centre is aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity in the South-South region, focusing on fish, seafood, vegetables, palm oil, and cassava, with a view to boosting both export and local consumption.

The release further indicates that the conference will feature exhibitions, a cooking challenge, and an awards ceremony, along with discussions on crucial topics, including youth and women involvement in agribusiness as a strategy for reducing unemployment and poverty, leveraging the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for export growth, and building resilient food systems through climate-smart agricultural practices.

Governor Umo Eno, Ph.D, will serve as the Chief Host, with the President of the Senate; Senator Godswill Akpabio as Special Guest, while six South-South Governors and other selected Governors from across the country are expected to attend. The keynote address will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Aneti.

Other distinguished guests include the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Joseph Utsev, and the Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Hon. Abubakar Momoh.

The 3rd Agribusiness Roundtable International Conference, which aligns with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Eno, aims to position Akwa Ibom as a leading hub for agricultural innovation and development in Nigeria, while also creating employment opportunities within the agricultural sector.

The conference seeks to unlock new agribusiness opportunities, address key sectoral challenges, and promote economic sustainability. Participants will explore a broad range of issues, including sustainable storage facilities to curb post-harvest losses, alternative energy sources like compressed natural gas (CNG) for agribusiness operations, and the role of sustainable agricultural practices in enhancing Nigeria’s export potential, especially under AGOA and AfCFTA frameworks.

During the event, the Agribusiness Development and Enterprise Award (ADEA) will be presented to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of sustainable agriculture, rural development, and food security.

CultureProlonged Corpse Keeping In Rural Areas Worries A'ibom Premier Monarch by Assamjnr(op): 9:22am On Oct 21, 2024
Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, JP, CFR, has advised bereaved families against prolonged embalmment of corpses due to financial constraints to hold burials.

Ntenyin Etuk, who spoke in an interview in Uyo at the weekend, expressed concern over the growing trend of delaying burials, particularly in rural areas, which has raised serious detrimental issues.

According to the premier monarch, keeping corpses for extended periods in government or private mortuaries often incurs substantial costs, leading some families to abandon their loved ones in mortuaries altogether.

He noted that more disturbing is a situation where some deceased families resort to preserving bodies at home or in medically uncertified mortuaries with inadequate embalming processes, thereby posing significant health risks to people within such vicinity or the community as a whole.

“We have reports of dead bodies sometimes being kept by their families at home for up to three years or more, where the corpses decompose to the point of resembling dried wood. This is despicable. We have to accord due respect to the dead by conducting burials as soon as possible,” he emphasised.

Ntenyin Etuk cautioned against burdening families with extravagant burial ceremonies that exceed their financial means, urging them not to sell off family assets to fund costly funerals which could lead to further economic hardship on them.

He pointed out that while some churches set timelines within which burials should be conducted, others give the families the right to choose when they are ready, but advised that delays should be minimised, especially when there are insufficient resources to sustain prolonged funerals.

The Ibibio patriarch called on the leadership at the family and village levels to assist in collaborating with bereaved families, especially those facing financial challenges, to ensure dignified but modest burial arrangements.

He condemned the unwholesome practice where excessive demands are imposed by some families before allowing a deceased to be buried in their communities, and also frowned at the uncharitable demands over female corpses by her family of origin for the children and husband to pay, something akin to seeking a "pound of flesh" before her burial is allowed.

Furthermore, Ntenyin Etuk encouraged churches to take an active interest in the welfare of their members, even after they pass away, by assisting bereaved families in organising timely funerals. He also praised churches that are already extending such support to their congregants.

LG Polls: Eunice Thomas leads APC to run the show in Ibeno

Written By Ndifreke Usen

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is taking the lead in today’s local government election in Ibeno, as early results from polling units indicate a clear advantage for the party.

This comes as a surprise in a stronghold traditionally controlled by the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), which has the local government chairman and a House of Representatives member from the area.

However, the strong showing of the APC is being attributed to the influence of the party’s prominent leader in the area, Dr. Eunice Thomas. It is generally believed that she has significantly revived the party's fortunes in the local government area. Her leadership is said to have contributed significantly to the party's success so far in the polls.

Meanwhile, today's election exercise has been largely peaceful, with both APC and PDP members commending the calm atmosphere at polling stations across Ibeno. As collation of results continues, all eyes remain on the final outcome of the polls.

Dr. Thomas, a former Commissioner for Education and Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Akwa Ibom, led the charge at a well-attended rally in Upenekang on Tuesday, where she assured the people of Ibeno that the APC would emerge victorious.

Dr. Thomas has been instrumental in reviving the APC in Ibeno, having injected fresh life into the party’s activities. It will be recalled that two months ago, she provided financial support in millions of naira to over 50 APC female councillorship candidates and several chairmanship hopefuls, covering the nomination fees required by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC). Her support was particularly aimed at ensuring the inclusion of female contenders in the race.

In addition to this, Dr. Thomas extended her financial support to all APC candidates in Ibeno Local Government Area, reinforcing her commitment to the party’s success in the forthcoming elections. Her contributions have been widely acknowledged as a turning point for the APC in Ibeno, giving the party's renewed energy and vibrancy ahead of the polls.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of party stakeholders, elders, youth, women, and other supporters, Dr. Thomas expressed her gratitude to President Tinubu for his commitment to tackling poverty and insecurity through his Renewed Hope agenda. She also praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his efforts in reviving the fortunes of APC in Akwa Ibom.

Dr. Thomas took a moment during the rally to eulogize the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, leading a minute of silence in her honour. She commended the virtues of the late First Lady and prayed for God’s strength for the Governor and the First Family in this time of grief.

In her remarks, Dr. Thomas urged the people of Ibeno to vote en masse for APC’s chairmanship candidate, Inyang-Umar Efanga, and all ten councilorship candidates in the local government area. She called on voters to arrive early for accreditation, cast their votes, and ensure their votes are counted, expressing confidence that the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) would uphold its integrity in the election process.

Speakers at the rally echoed Dr. Thomas’ sentiments, with many assuring that, having campaigned in all wards and polling units across the local government area, APC remains the preferred choice of the people. They expressed optimism about the party’s chances of securing a resounding victory in the polls.

The high point of the event was the presentation of party flags to all APC candidates and a solemn tribute to the late First Lady.

PoliticsA'ibom To Debut Regatta And Fishing Festival On World Tourism Day 2024 by Assamjnr(op): 4:03pm On Sep 18, 2024
Posted By Ubong ASSAM Jnr, Eket.

As a deliberate measure to soothe Nwaniba and other communities hosting the Ibom Icon Hotel and the marina beach which is one of the major slave routes in Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Culture and Tourism will host its first ever boat regatta and fishing festival to celebrate world tourism day.

The celebration is planned in line with the theme of the 2024 World Tourism Day (WTD) celebration, Tourism and Peace" designed to see tourism as sustainable transformation driver to communities – creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies.

In a chat with newsmen in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital on Wednesday, the Commissioner, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Sir Charles Udoh acknowledged the peaceful nature of the communities hosting Ibom Icon Hotel and other facilities therein, including the Nwaniba beaches, and pledged state government preparedness to reciprocate such gestures.

Udoh said the inaugural "Ibom Boat Regatta and Fishing Festival", slated for September 27, 2024, at Marina Beach, will showcase the state’s rich maritime heritage and serve as a platform to promote tourism, culture, and peace.

The Culture and Tourism Commissioner listed highlights of the day to include the unveiling of a fully restored slave boat, symbolizing a painful yet significant chapter in the history of the region as one of the major slave routes during the transatlantic slave trade.

The boat’s restoration, funded by the Ibom National Association of Akwa Ibom USA Incorporated, according to the Commissioner, underscores efforts to preserve the state’s heritage. Additionally, a newly established Slave Memorial Park, initiated by a local philanthropist, will also be officially commissioned during the festival.

Udoh, explained that these projects were part of the state's broader vision to leverage Akwa Ibom’s historical and cultural assets. "Governor Umo Eno’s administration is committed to turning our rich heritage into a major economic driver. This year’s World Tourism Day focuses on peace, and through events like the regatta, we are fostering unity within the Marina community and beyond.”

The state government has made significant strides in preparing for the event, with robust security measures in place. "We have partnered with the Nigerian Navy to acquire 14 gunboats to ensure safety in our waterways. In addition, we are introducing a fully air-conditioned luxury ferry service, expected to arrive soon, to boost marine transport and attract tourism to the area," the Commissioner added.

The festival, which also includes cultural displays, tug-of-war contests, and fishing competitions, will help stimulate local economies in coastal communities and attract both tourists and investors to the region. Participation will be by invitation, with the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Eno, serving as the Special Guest of Honour.

He listed other efforts to make Akwa Ibom a tourism hub to include steps to harness its unique historical sites, such as the amalgamation site and locations tied to the 1929 Women's War, Mary Slessor House, all mapped out for preservation and restoration.

In line with the vision to transform the sector, Udoh explained that the state is also transforming an erosion-ravaged area into a world-class tourist center, as it is currently developing the area with a nine-hole golf course, an artificial lake with a restaurant at its center, luxury chalets, a football field, basketball courts, floodlights for night sports, and a children's park. These amenities are designed to offer an all-inclusive experience for visitors, combining leisure, sports, and relaxation.

Udoh hinted that, to properly document and coordinate its tourism activities, the state government will, on the 2024 World's Tourism Day unveil the official tourism website of the state "discoverakwaibom.com", to carry out trend analysis of people and businesses for data gathering and future planning, list all the accredited tour operators, hotels and their grading to protect visitors and tourists from falling prey to scammers.

As the political clock for the local government elections in the state ticks closer, support for the re-election bid of the immediate-past Transition Committee Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr.) Uwemedimo Udo, is gaining momentum.

Recall that the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has slated the council polls in the state for October 5, 2024. This development has seen Dr. Udo, an academic turned politician, widely endorsed across the 14 wards of Uyo by stakeholders, elders, women, and youths.

Speaking to journalists and bloggers on Monday in Uyo, a United Kingdom-based mental health practitioner and staunch supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akparawa Jimaimah Essien, rallied support for Dr. Udoh's second term.

Akparawa Essien, who hails from Ifa Atai village, Etoi clan in Uyo LGA, emphasized the remarkable achievements recorded during Hon. Udo's first term as Executive Chairman of the Council.

He stated: "Gentlemen, I'm proud to say that Dr. Uwemedimo Udo entered politics fully prepared, which is why his first term brought remarkable development to all the wards of Uyo. Every son and daughter of Uyo can testify that his three years as Executive Chairman produced tangible results that remain fresh in our minds. The projects are countless; the construction, completion, and inauguration of the Udom Emmanuel Administrative Block and provision of an electric transformer at the Council Secretariat, the modern health centres at Ewet Offot and Ikot Ebido, among others.

"Based on my findings, I can state categorically that these projects and programmes have greatly benefited the council workers, the entire communities, and even neighbouring areas. Given these achievements, it is imperative that Dr. Udo is re-elected for a second term, as our people say, 'one good turn deserves another.'"

The former House of Assembly aspirant for Uyo State Constituency in 2019 also commended Dr. Udo’s efforts since being sworn in as Transition Committee Chairman in December 2023, highlighting the Chairman's innumerable achievements as enshrined in his 'Service Alone' blueprint.

He said the people were elated over the recent construction and furnishing of the new Golden Technical Block for the Council’s Works Department, which was commissioned by Governor Umo Eno. Essien stressed that such a mega project was a testament to Dr. Udo’s dedication to creating a conducive working environment for council staff.

The mental health expert further praised Dr. Udo’s initiatives in empowering local businesses and supporting education. He cited the N5.5 million business grant to women, bursaries, and JAMB application forms for Uyo students as proof of his commitment to the welfare of the people.

Jimaimah Essien, while praising the Dr. Udo, also pointed to the massive road grading projects of his administration across the four clans of Offot, Etoi, Oku, and Ikono. He said the initiative was a significant contribution to improving access within the local government area.

Meanwhile, Akparawa Essien had used the occasion to eulogize Governor Umo Eno for what he termed Christ-centric leadership in the state.

The Akparawa Ibibio specifically praised Governor Eno for appointing many sons and daughters of Uyo into key positions in his administration, including the Secretary to the State Government and Political leader of Uyo, Prince Enobong Uwah, Commissioners Mr. Charles Udoh and Mr. John James, and Board Chairmen; Hon. Ibesikpo Asutan PDP Chairmanship aspirant and pro-masses advocate, Obong Nsikak Oku, widely known as G4, has expressed deep gratitude to security agencies in the country and churches in Akwa Ibom for their crucial roles in securing the release of Akwa Ibom-born NYSC member, Solomon Bassey Daniel.

G4 shared his sentiments on Sunday while speaking with journalists in Uyo, celebrating the safe return of Solomon, who was abducted over a year ago while en route to Sokoto for his National service.

Recall that Solomon, a native of Itu Local Government Area and a Biochemistry graduate of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, endured 360 harrowing days in captivity before his release.

While the former ExxonMobil senior staff refrained from attributing the rescue directly to any public figure, he acknowledged the role of the state under the leadership of the Governor.

In his words: "As the Chief Security Officer of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Governor Umo Bassey Eno, must have played an essential role behind the scenes in coordinating with the security forces to secure the release of our son, Solomon.

"Though much of this work remains undisclosed because this is a top security matter, it is my belief that the Governor's influence contributed significantly to the outcome."

G4 emphasized the tireless efforts of the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS), whose relentless pursuit led to the eventual freedom of Solomon and the other kidnapped victims.

"Our security agencies have shown extraordinary dedication and bravery in this case. They deserve our highest praise for their successful operation in ensuring the safe return of these young men and women," G4 stated.

The Ibesikpo Asutan AKISIEC Ward 6 philanthropist, who currently supports 28 tertiary students through his scholarship programme, specifically recognized the churches across Akwa Ibom State, noting that their fervent prayers and fasting played a vital role in Solomon's release.

"The power of collective prayer cannot be overstated. The prayers offered by our churches were instrumental in bringing Solomon back home safely. Indeed, the unity shown by various denominations is eloquent proof of the strength and faith of the Akwa Ibom people," he said.

G4, known for his passionate commitment to the welfare of the people, reiterated his dedication to advocating for the masses and urged the public to continue supporting security agencies and religious bodies in their efforts to protect and uplift the community.

Hear him: "I use this moment to once again implore our people not to forget the importance of standing together in times of crisis. The combination of effective security operations and the unwavering faith of our people has proven to be a powerful force. With such unity, I truly believe that Akwa Ibom will continue to overcome any challenge it faces."

The National Youth Coordinator of the Uyo Senatorial District People's Initiative (USPI), Akparawa (Elder) Iniobong Obot, has lauded Governor Umo Eno for his visionary leadership in advancing the aviation sector in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Victor Attah International Airport during the reception and dedication ceremony for Ibom Air's newly acquired Airbus A220-300, Elder Obot eulogized the Governor's commitment to expanding the state's aviation infrastructure and positioning Ibom Air as a leading airline in Nigeria.

Obot, a financial professional who has garnered numerous awards in the banking and insurance industries, emphasized that the addition of this new aircraft to the fleet of Ibom Air is a significant milestone. He noted that it not only boosts the airline's capacity to meet the growing demand for its services but also underscores Governor Umo Eno's dedication to enhancing the economic development of Akwa Ibom through strategic investments in key sectors.

In the words of the Treasurer of the Uyo Federal Constituency chapter of the Ibom Consolidation Project (ICP): "By expanding Ibom Air's fleet, the Governor is not only creating more opportunities for connectivity and business but also reinforcing the position of our State as a hub of aviation excellence, not just in Nigeria, but across the entire African continent."

The recently installed Akparawa of MMI International, also commended the involvement of two Nigerian financial institutions in supporting the state's ambitions, pointing out that this collaboration is crucial for sustaining the airline's growth trajectory.

It will be recalled that just a few months ago, Pastor Umo Eno, along with key dignitaries including the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Enobong Uwah was present at the delivery event in Maastricht, Netherlands, where they officially received the new aircraft.

The new Airbus A220-300, which brings Ibom Air's fleet of A220s to 7, is expected to further enhance the airline's operational efficiency and service delivery. Its strategic expansion, according to the financial expert and politician, aligns favorably with Governor Eno's ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructural development and economic empowerment.

The Elder of the Apostolic Church of Nigeria, Ini Abasi Obot, used the occasion to urge Akwa Ibomites at home and in the diaspora to continue supporting the programs and projects of Governor Eno, stressing that the benefits of a robust aviation sector extend beyond transportation, impacting tourism, business, and the overall quality of life for residents of the State.

* Empowers Chairmanship, Councilorship Candidates with Millions for AKISIEC Nomination Fees

POSTED BY UBONG ASSAM JNR.

Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Dr. Eunice Thomas, has made a significant move in the Akwa Ibom political scene by financially supporting over 50 female candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.

At a meeting held in Uyo on Wednesday, where no fewer than 50 APC councillorship candidates and several chairmanship candidates were present, the Ibeno-born politician disbursed millions of naira to cover the nomination fees required by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) for the female APC contenders.

In addition to this, Dr. Thomas extended her financial support to all APC candidates in Ibeno LGA, further demonstrating her commitment to the party's success in the upcoming elections.

It should be recalled that AKISIEC issued a directive last week requiring candidates for the 2024 local government polls to pay nomination fees and submit evidence of payment to the commission.

According to the directive, female chairmanship candidates are required to pay N250,000 each, while female councillorship candidates must pay N125,000 each.

Dr. Thomas, who served as Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare during the administration of Chief Godswill Akpabio, used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for empowering Nigerians through his recent policies and programmes.

She used the occasion to call on Nigerians to pray for the Country's first family as well as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, recognizing their immense contributions to the advancement of Akwa Ibom in particular and Nigeria.

While emphasizing her commitment to ensuring the success of the APC in the upcoming elections, Dr. Thomas, who was accompanied to the meeting by her husband, Mr. Samuel Thomas, urged the candidates to remain focused and work closely with their communities to identify key issues they can address when elected.

She stated, "I came here today to appreciate you for daring to contest. I am here to campaign for you, to strengthen you, and to stand by you. Through my support and that of other women, you will be given the money to pay for your AKISIEC fees."

The event was attended by top APC leaders in the state, who commended Dr. Thomas for her generosity and support.

The State Chairman of APC, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, represented by Dr. David Umoessien, Deputy Chairman, thanked President Tinubu for approving the appointment of Dr. Thomas and praised the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio for facilitating numerous political appointments for Akwa Ibom indigenes.

Other party leaders, including Mr. Samuel Thomas, husband of the donor; APC State Publicity Secretary Barr. OtoAbasi Udo, and Youth Leader; Hon. Clement Awakessien, also lauded Dr. Thomas for her contributions to the party's success, noting that her philanthropic gesture was in line with the legacy of her mentor, Mrs. Ekaette-Unoma Akpabio.

Meanwhile, the female candidates who are beneficiaries of Dr. Thomas’s unprecedented generosity have expressed immense gratitude to her for selflessly becoming their hope in their moment of need.

They opined that the financial intervention will significantly bolster their chances of winning in the October 5 council polls.

PoliticsAugust Protest: Rep. Clement Jimbo Defends Tinubu, Begs For Trust In President by Assamjnr(op): 7:10pm On Aug 09, 2024
Posted by Godswill Assam Jnr, Lagos.

Amidst the ongoing nationwide protests, the member representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Clement Jimbo, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and trust in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's ability to deliver on his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking during a live broadcast on Channels TV's flagship programme, Sunrise Daily, on Friday morning, Jimbo, one of the youngest lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly, reassured Nigerians that the current economic turbulence, exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies, would soon be resolved through the strategic measures the President has initiated.

Commenting on the current protests, he noted, “The #EndSARS protest for instance, had a specific focus on police brutality and achieved its purpose. However, the #EndBadGovernance protest is more open-ended, making it challenging to address directly.”

While acknowledging that protests serve as a wake-up call for those in governance, signaling that all is not well, "the Youth Slot," as he is fondly called by his supporters and netizens, emphasized that the Tinubu administration is taking significant steps to address the concerns raised by the protesters.

Drawing an analogy, the 41-year-old lawmaker stated: "I look at the current scenario like a man who got married, and for whatever reason, his wife passed away, they divorced, or they separated. But before that happened, they had children, and the man had to bring in another wife. The new person coming into the house will obviously need to understand how the household operates; how the children are, and how things have been done. It's the same thing with government.”

The Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development observed that this was the first administration in Nigeria's history operating without a fuel subsidy. He urged Nigerians to give President Tinubu the time needed to roll out his people-centric policies, assuring that they would lead the nation to prosperity.

Responding to a question, Hon. Jimbo argued that no policy in President Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope' Agenda could be labeled as "bad governance."

He pointed out that the budget inherited by the President, as passed by the National Assembly, did not include provisions for fuel subsidies, observing that it left the President with no choice but to act decisively upon taking office.

There are reports that the fuel subsidy primarily benefited a select few; however, the graduate of Quantity Survey hinted that the country was borrowing money to pay for the subsidies, comparing it to a father who borrows heavily to give his children a luxurious lifestyle without them knowing about the mounting debt, referring to it as a ticking time bomb.

Meanwhile, Hon. Jimbo has stated that Nigeria is on the brink of a season of abundance. He cited the President's massive investments in agriculture and other sectors, revealing that an agreement has been signed to produce over 10,000 tractors for mechanized farming across the country. He assured that these efforts would soon yield ample food and other essential items for all Nigerians.

As the nation navigates these challenging times, the Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Lawmaker urged citizens to be patient, remain patriotic, and continue to love one another, stressing that the Renewed Hope of President Bola Tinubu will soon lead to economic stability and growth.

The lawmaker who represented Ikono in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, Rt. Hon. Victor Charles Udofia, has commended Governor Umo Eno for his numerous efforts and sacrifices in sustaining peace in the state.

Speaking on Thursday, Udofia expressed his views on various pressing state and national issues, including the ongoing 'End Bad Governance' protest, the former lawmaker voiced his concerns about the timing of the protest, stressing that it was not the right time for such actions as the Country was just coming out of a total shutdown of economy.

He highlighted several achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration within its first year, including the increase in minimum wage, grants for students, entrepreneurs and households amongst others.

While stressing that the nation was just recovering from a significant economic shutdown due to the strike by the NLC and TUC, the Ikono-born politician maintained that peaceful protests in Nigeria often turn violent. Udofia observed that, although Nigerians have the constitutional right to protest for better lives, he warned against protests that could be hijacked by miscreants. He urged the organizers to seek dialogue with the country's President, state governors, and senators instead.

On the performance of Governor Umo Eno, the Managing Director, Innovic Integrated Services, specifically commended the State Chief Executive for fostering peace and unity across political lines in Akwa Ibom.

He described Governor Eno as a genuine man of God whose interest in service to all is evident in the life-touching projects and programs of his ARISE agenda across all 31 LGAs.

Udofia said the governor has made history in many ways, including his recent act of attending, through a representative, and supporting the empowerment programme of an opposition House of Representatives member in the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo.

He described the Governor's action as unprecedented political maturity and called Eno the "father of modern Akwa Ibom" and a true democrat. Udofia emphasized that the Governor's people-centric leadership was unprecedented and urged everyone to be patient and support the his ARISE agenda.

The heavyweight politician used the occasion to also praise Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) for his effective and impactful representation of the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency. He noted that Ukpong-Udo has positively touched almost all lives in the two LGAs of the Federal Constituency. He challenged other elected and appointed government officials to remember that they were people's representatives and need to share resources with their constituents. By doing so, Udofia noted, they would promote government efforts and reduce the burden on the governor and prevent misconceptions about the governor's performance.

On the forthcoming local government elections, Udofia hailed Engr. Otobong Okon Essien, the consensus chairmanship aspirant for Ikono. He dismissed concerns about her gender, saying that Essien's qualifications, track record of achievements, and previous success as a councillor make her the best candidate for the race. Victor maintained that with the right support from stakeholders, elders, youth, and women of Ikono, Engr. Essien would perform exceptionally well and take the area to enviable heights of development.

The Ibiaku Ntok Okpo-born politician expressed his gratitude to Governor Eno for his massive investments in road infrastructure, education, health, care for retirees and civil servants, and other areas across Akwa Ibom. He called on everyone to support the governor and his plans for the state.

PoliticsGroup Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plan By Emman Obot To Install Wife Running Mate by Assamjnr(op): 5:43pm On Jul 31, 2024
Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

As the local government elections inch closer, a socio-political group, the Ibesikpo Asutan Alliance for Justice and Equity (IAAJE), has raised an alarm over what they describe as an "unprecedented level of desperation" by Hon. Emman Obot, a former House of Representatives member.

The group alleges that Obot is attempting to forcefully impose his wife, Mrs. Goodness Emman Obot, as the running mate to the PDP Consensus Chairmanship aspirant, Hon. Edidiong Inyang, in the October local government election.

In a press statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Obong AniekanAbasi Umoh, and Secretary, Alphonsus Ekanem Esq., the group expressed their dismay.

They argued that Hon. Obot should be focusing on galvanizing support for the ARISE agenda of Governor Umo Eno, rather than pursuing what they see as a selfish and distracting interest.

The statement noted that Obot's actions could sow discord within the local government area and, if not checked, could potentially undermine the unity and progress of the entire Ibesikpo Asutan.

Part of the statement read: "Hon. Emman Obot's insistence on imposing his wife as the running mate for the PDP Consensus Chairmanship aspirant in Ibesikpo Asutan, Hon. Edidiong Inyang, is not only egocentric but also poses a significant risk to the harmony of Ibesikpo Asutan.

"It is public knowledge that there are numerous tested and trusted women within the PDP who have laboured for the success of our party and deserve recognition and reward.

"Mrs. Goodness Emman Obot and even Hon. Emman Obot himself, on the other hand, have not contributed enough politically and should not be forced upon the people."

IAAJE cited the biblical principle of a time for sowing and a time for harvest, asserting that Mrs. Goodness Emman Obot has not "sown" politically.

They urged the party and stakeholders to consider the broader implications of endorsing Obot as the running mate, stressing that the people do not support her politically.

The stakeholders, who are all loyal supporters of the PDP, emphasized that fairness and equity demand that most qualified, popular and eligible persons from the ward be allowed to compete for the top job. They observed that this will prevent violence and unrest among stakeholders who oppose imposition and handpicking

The group used the occasion to express delight at the adoption of Hon. Edidiong Inyang, popularly known as Murphy, as the PDP Consensus Chairmanship aspirant.

While commending the party, stakeholders and groups in Ibesikpo Asutan for their overwhelming support for Hon. Inyang, the group pledged to mobilize support for the PDP in the forthcoming council polls and the ARISE agenda.

PoliticsSHEATHE YOUR SWORD: Oku Ibom Ibibio Appeals To Organisers Of Planned Protest by Assamjnr(op): 7:11pm On Jul 28, 2024
…Calls For Cooperation For The Economic Programmes Of President Tinubu And Gov. Eno

Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

The Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, JP, CFR, has appealed to the organisers of the planned nationwide protest to reconsider the overall interest of the nation by shelving their proposed action.

Ntenyin Etuk said while we bemoan the economic hardship in the country, it is certainly unwise at this time to stage a nationwide protest as being canvassed for by its organizers from August 1, 2024, cautioning that such may not be in the best interest of us as a people and as a nation.

According to the revered supreme monarch, who is the Patriarch of the Ibibios worldwide, there are other ways to call out the attention of government to our economic challenges, warning against any action that may plunge the nation into an insurmountable crisis and possible destruction of hard-earned state and national facilities.

In an interview in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital on Sunday, July 28, 2024, the Oku Ibom Ibibio pleaded with Nigerian citizens to demonstrate reasonable level of patriotism by resisting the temptation to sponsor or participate in the planned #EndBadGovernance protest.

“I am admonishing passionately as a father in my sacred position as Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers that we should shelve the planned protest.

"There are assurances that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. The administration is working to tackle the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

“Let us not therefore create an opportunity for miscreants, looters or enemies of the nation to cash in on the protest to carry out their selfish desires as it happened during the #EndSARS protest where lives and property were lost in the process.

“As we are in a democracy, we surely have ample channels to air our views to the government without engaging in confrontational modes. I am therefore advising that we give due support and cooperation to the administrations of the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and our State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, as we will surely come out of the present economic meltdown,” he urged.

The royal father, who stressed that governance is not an easy affair, drew the attention of the people to positive initiatives and achievements recorded by both the federal and state governments within the last year.

He therefore called on Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government for the actualisation of its economic reforms and development programme, the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Oku Ibom Ibibio also noted the commendable performance of Governor Umo Eno in Akwa Ibom State, as encapsulated in his ARISE Agenda. He called on indigenes and residents alike to give the governor unalloyed cooperation and support to achieve more.

The monarch also urged traditional rulers, parents, guardians, and leaders at various levels to caution their subjects and wards against being enticed to join the planned protest to avoid untoward consequences.

To curb the teething food crises in parts of the country, Ntenyin Etuk emphasised the importance of Nigerians including those in government and other business endeavours to engage seriously in farming and agriculture in general, stressing that since Nigeria is blessed with enormous arable land and water resources we shouldn't experience food crises at all.

Lastly, he appealed for tolerance among political leaders and politicians generally, stressing that no matter the penchant for power, they should not compromise the collective interests of the nation for personal or selfish desires.

The monarch urged privileged Nigerians, especially leaders at all tiers of governments —local governments, parliament, state and federal governments,

As the Local Government elections in Akwa Ibom State draw near, the people of Ibesikpo Southern are facing heartbreak.

Our reporter gathered on Friday that, women in the area have threatened a hunger strike and are seriously protesting against alleged moves to disrupt the established zoning arrangement that has been in place since the creation of the Local Government.

However, Ibesikpo is divided into two zones: the Northern zone with two wards; Wards 1 and 2, and the Southern zone with four wards; Wards 3, 4, 5 and 6.

This reporter gathered that, the Northern zone has had more representation, producing two Executive Chairmen—Dr. Emaeyak N. Ukpong from Northern Ibesikpo Ward 1 and Hon. Ekpe James from Northern Ibesikpo Ward 2—along with two Transition Chairmen and a Vice Chairman.

In contrast, the Southern zone has only produced one Executive Chairman, Hon. Uwem Ita Etuk from Ward 3, and one House of Assembly member, Hon. Ekpeowo Ekpo, who did not complete his tenure due to his untimely demise.

Indigenes of the area who spoke with us, said the upcoming Council Polls were widely believed to have zoned the Chairmanship to Southern Ibesikpo.

However, they alleged that recent political schemes by influential figures outside the local government appear to be undermining this arrangement and that, this has threatened to exclude the Southern zone from the Chairmanship race.

Some prominent sons and daughters of the area, including Barr. Etido Paul Ekpe, Obong Sylvester Akpan, and Mrs. Roseline Inemesit Akpabio, all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have voiced their distress.

In their separate reactions, the people said they feel cheated and used, with Barr. Ekpe calling for the party to uphold justice, fairness, and equity that it is known for, since inception.

On her part, Mrs. Akabio stated that the women of Southern Ibesikpo would embark on a seven-day hunger strike if their right to the Chairmanship is taken away.

She appealed to Governor Umo Eno, whom she emphasized is a leader with highly level of integrity and fairness, to intervene and ensure that justice prevails.

The people maintained that the current political situation has left the people of Southern Ibesikpo feeling marginalized and betrayed.

...Says It Would Be Irresponsible To Allow State's Assets Remain Underutilized

A leading Chairmanship aspirant from Ibesikpo Asutan in the forthcoming Local Government polls, Obong Nsikak Oku, popularly known as G4, has expressed strong support for Governor Umo Eno's plan to construct a 19-storey ultramodern commercial Tower on the State property in Lagos.

Oku, who is a former management staff at ExxonMobil, shared his thoughts during an interactive session with journalists and bloggers on Tuesday in Uyo, the state capital.

Speaking on the proposed project, the successful entrepreneur highlighted the strategic importance of revitalizing the long-neglected land, acquired more than three decades ago, which had become an eyesore and a symbol of wasted potential. The philanthropist eulogized Governor Umo Eno for his visionary leadership and courage in initiating such a transformative project.

His words: "I've been dismayed by the myriad of negative reports and reactions that have surfaced since the announcement about the Ibom Towers. It's disheartening to see such misguided perspectives in this era of digital enlightenment. However, I firmly believe that the governor's visionary decision to develop this prime property in the heart of Victoria Island, Lagos, further proves his unwavering commitment to harnessing our assets for economic prosperity. This bold move has convincingly demonstrated to all discerning sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom that we have a leader who is resolute in his pursuit of growth and development."

Continuing, the graduate of Mechanical Engineering noted: "This 19-storey commercial tower will not only enhance the state's revenue but also boost its tourism profile and attract significant attention from both national and international communities."

Oku elaborated on the manifold benefits that the completion of the tower would bring, including a substantial increase in the state's revenue, the creation of job opportunities, and the enhancement of Akwa Ibom's reputation as a forward-thinking and dynamic state.

The Ibesikpo AKISIEC Ward 6 politician emphasized that such projects are essential for the state's socio-economic advancement and align with the ARISE Agenda, which aims to foster sustainable development across various sectors.

Answering a reporter's question, the chairmanship aspirant, while addressing the criticisms from opposition individuals and groups, maintained that the 'Ibom Towers' project was a necessary step to ensure the optimal use of the state's resources, emphasizing that it would be irresponsible to let it remain underutilized.

Obong Nsikak Oku said, rather than vilifying the Governor, Eno deserves eulogies for showing his administration's capacity to drive meaningful change and prosperity for Akwa Ibom.

G4 called on all Akwa Ibomites, at home and in the Diaspora, to support Governor Umo Eno's genuine efforts, saying his projects and programmes are designed to benefit the people both in the short and long term.

"Governor Umo Eno has consistently demonstrated his dedication to improving the lives of Akwa Ibomites. This project is another proof of his innovative and people-centric approach to governance," Oku concluded.

CultureMonarch Sends SOS To Gov Eno As Erosion Menace Worsens In Ekpri Nsukara by Assamjnr(op): 7:56am On Jul 22, 2024
...Appeals For Urgent Intervention To Avert More Disasters As 4year Old Girl Drowns

Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

The erosion menance in Ekpri Nsukara Offot in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has worsened following recent heavy rainfalls.

The ravaging erosion has rendered some streets in the thickly populated community impassable while some houses are on the verge of being totally destroyed except the State Government intervenes to avert further disastrous consequences.

Recently, a four year old girl was reportedly drowned in the rampaging erosion and all efforts to rescue her proved abortive as she died in flood.

Lamenting over the sad development on Saturday, July 20, 2024, the Village Head of Ekpri Nsukara Offot, Eteidung Emem Denis Asikpo appealed passionately to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno to save them from the erosion hazards.

Eteidung Asikpo explained that it is usually a period of “hue and cry” in Ekpri Nsukara Offot, whenever rainy season sets in, as heavy downpour washes off some streets and flood houses in the affected areas thereby chasing away inhabitants from their homes for days and sometimes weeks.

He said, "It is a very sad situation as you have witnesssed during your inspection. That is the situation we have faced for some years now when rainy season begins.

"Some streets in our community like Akpakpan Street, off Mission Road and other adjoining streets, are cut off. Residents can't access their houses with cars or motorcycles any longer. Some fences of properties and houses have either been destroyed or flooded, while farmland are being submerged. Residents in the affected areas do face great risk in navigating to their houses when it rains especially at night."

Eteidung Asikpo said the ugly development has made Ekpri Nsukara Offot, which situates along the Nwaniba Road axis of Uyo Capital City and a co-host of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), to face the threat of a potential gully erosion with its dire consequences of land degradation and environmental insecurity.

"We had earlier cried out that the fast-evolving gully erosion in parts of our community has cut off some streets from being accessible to motorists. It has also destroyed fences, while some houses have been flooded and others on the verge of being submerged, " he added.

Some institutions of learning, including the community-owned Ekpri Nsukara Offot International Schools (ENISCO), and some private establishments are also under serious threat of devastation and possible submersion if the erosion is not addressed as soon as possible.

The village head further lamented that indigenes and residents so far affected by the erosion menance are now very helpless, thus making his community to stand the risk of serious environmental health hazards, except urgent remedy is provided by the government.

According to him, Ekpri Nsukara Offot community wants government to provide both remedial and permanent solutions to save lives, houses and other properties from further destruction.

Meanwhile, the flood has converted large acreage of farmlands in the community into stagnant pools with no immediate hope of the lands being utilised except when construction work commences to channel out the rainwater.

Eteidung Asikpo expressed hope that the administration of Pastor Eno will salvage the community from the perennial erosion menace as the governor has shown tremendous concern as encapsulated in the ARISE Agenda to address challenges facing the people and communities as well as develop rural areas.

A frontline PDP Chairmanship aspirant for Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government, Obong Nsikak Oku, popularly known as G4, has said his administration will honour the founding fathers of the area.

The renowned entrepreneur specifically mentioned the former Governor of the State; Obong Victor Attah, Obong T. O. Akpan, the late Effiong Okon Eyo (Eyo Uyo), former Paramount Ruler HRM Edidem Ita Bassey Etuk (late), Rtd Air Marshal Nsikak Eduok (late), Obong E. E. Akpainyang, Elder Effiong Essien, Bishop Christian Ekong, President of Lutheran Church of Nigeria, among others who made significant sacrifices for the local government area.

Oku made this known on Friday during an interaction with journalists and bloggers in Uyo, the state capital.

He emphasized that these respected individuals deserve recognition for their supreme sacrifices and their roles in putting Ibesikpo Asutan on the global map.

G4 expressed his displeasure that many of these leaders, along with several others who have similarly contributed to the area and Country at large, have not been adequately honoured and recognized. He vowed to correct this oversight when elected.

Answering a reporter's question, Oku said, "The remarkable development in the State under the able leadership of our dear Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, underscores the importance of having competent leadership at all levels of government. It is imperative that the third tier of government, which directly interfaces with the grassroots, be managed by individuals who are fit in character and possess the requisite leadership qualities; those who are not only qualified but also have a clear vision and actionable plans for continued progress, and are ready to key into the ARISE agenda."

Following the proclamation of elections and the publication of guidelines for Local Government elections by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Nsikak Oku called for a public debate among all chairmanship aspirants.

He emphasized the necessity of the debate in light of the significant developmental strides made by Governor Umo Eno across the state.

His words: "The call for a public debate comes amidst concerns over impositions and plans by certain stakeholders to marginalize deserving aspirants in favour of less competent individuals.

"It is truism that a debate will provide a platform for each aspirant to showcase their capabilities and articulate their plans for their respective local governments, most especially in Ibesikpo Asutan."

The philanthropist, who eulogized Governor Umo Eno for his achievements in just over a year, pledged to advance the ARISE Agenda with his blueprint; 'ADEC project.'
