Mackenzie Lueck investigation: Prosecutors have been granted an extension to file charges in the Utah college student's case By Madeline Holcombe and Chris Boyette, CNN 47 mins ago The suspect charged in the murder of Mackenzie Lueck is seen being arrested on Friday. The man suspected of killing missing Utah college student Mackenzie Lueck will continue to be held in jail without bail for another week after prosecutors on Tuesday received an extension to file charges. A motion granted by Utah's Third District Court gives the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office until next week to charge Ayoola Ajayi in Lueck's death, the district attorney's office said in a statement. Unless a court rules for an extension, a suspect may only be held in custody for 72 hours before charges are filed or they must be released. Ajayi, 31, was arrested Friday and booked into the Salt Lake County jail. He is expected to be charged with Lueck's murder and several other counts, including aggravated kidnapping, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said. Female tissue found in his home Lueck has been missing since the morning of June 17. The University of Utah student texted her parents at around 1 a.m. after landing at Salt Lake International Airport, police said. Airport surveillance footage showed her rolling her luggage through the airport in the early morning hours. Photo gallery by USA Today She then took a Lyft to Hatch Park, where she was last seen. Investigators tracking Ajayi's phone say he and Lueck were both in the park within a minute of each other. Then her phone stopped receiving data or location services, police said. Investigators searched Ajayi's home and property last week, police said. As they did, his neighbors told police they saw him using gasoline to burn something in his backyard on June 17 and 18, Brown said. Police said the search yielded multiple items of evidence. "A forensic excavation of the burn area was conducted, which resulted in the finding of several charred items that were consistent with personal items of Mackenzie Lueck," Brown told reporters. Police also discovered charred material that was determined to be female human tissue consistent with Lueck's DNA profile, he said. A man who wanted a soundproof room Ajayi lived about five miles from the park where Lueck was last seen. According to his LinkedIn page, he is a former information technology specialist for the US Army and recently worked for Dell and Goldman Sachs. CNN has reached out to the US Army and Dell for comment. His neighbor, Tom Camomile, told CNN prior to his arrest that Ajayi was a "computer geek." "I think he's a man of high integrity," he said, "but you don't know anyone." In 2014, Ajayi was investigated for a "Sex Offense/Rape Complaint," according to North Park Police Department Chief Jeff Simmons. The woman involved did not want to pursue charges against him. Brian Wolf, a contractor, told CNN that Ajayi asked him to build a soundproof room in his home with a secret, thumb print protected door. Ajayi told him the soundproofing was for listening to loud music. He also wanted hooks up high so he could put in a wine rack, Wolf said. "People ask me to build all kind of stuff all the time but nothing like this. This was just way too weird," Wolf, who declined the job, said. 'A ball of light' Lueck was a part-time senior studying kinesiology and pre-nursing at the University of Utah. She was set to graduate in 2020, according to CNN affiliate KSL. Her sorority sisters said she was outgoing and kind. "(She) was the kind of person who would ... have a good time no matter what she was doing and have everyone involved, enjoying themselves," Lueck's sorority "big" sister Carly Reilly told KSL. Michelle Galison, also a member of the University of Utah's Alpha Chi Omega sorority told the station that Lueck was unforgettable. "I will remember her as a ball of light. That's what she was. A blond bubble of happiness," Galison told KSL

Ex-wife of suspect arrested for murder of Mackenzie Lueck says he once threatened to ‘have someone come kidnap’ and ‘kill’ her Jessica Schladebeck 3 hrs ago © Associated Press The ex-wife of a man arrested in the murder of University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck said she has not been in contact with the alleged killer because she’s long been afraid of him. Tenisha Ajayi, who currently lives in Dallas, Tex., first met Ayoola Ajayi through a family friend. In an interview with KUTV on Monday, she expressed shock over his arrest in the death of 23-year-old Lueck, but acknowledged he showed signs of violence throughout their relationship. “I just stopped talking to him because I was fearing for my life,” she said. “He didn’t want me to do nothing. He didn’t want me to talk to nobody or nothing.” Tenisha claimed Ajayi became increasingly controlling while they were together and eventually started to threaten her – that’s when she decided to officially leave him. “If I wouldn’t do what he told me to do, he got real aggressive,” she told the news station. “He was like I’ll have someone come and kidnap you and kill you.” According to court records, Tenisha Ajayi filed for divorce last October, and it was finalized in January. While she has not spoken with Ajayi for years, she said she would be willing to talk with the police and help their investigation in anyway she can. Ajayi was arrested Friday for allegedly killing Lueck and burning her body. He was charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body. Authorities have not released a motive behind Lueck’s slaying. The University of Utah senior went missing June 17 after she arrived at the Salt Lake City airport from Los Angeles, where she had been attending her grandmother’s funeral. From there, Lueck ordered a Lyft from the airport and met a man in nearby Hatch Park around 3 a.m. Authorities have since identified the him as 31-year-old Ajayi, who was named a person of interest after evidence was uncovered on the victim’s phone. Police said the suspect’s neighbors also spotted him burning something with gasoline in his backyard on June 17 and 18. A later excavation of his property turned up several charred personal items and human remains, which DNA testing confirmed to belong to Lueck. Court documents also released Monday revealed Ajayi was previously investigated for a rape allegation made by his co-worker in 2014. According to a North Park Police report obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune, the pair worked together at a financial company in Logan. She told authorities on Nov. 24, 2014 she’d been at Ajayi’s home when he raped her. She said it started as a consensual encounter – “one thing led to another,” but she "suddenly found herself in a compromising position,” she told investigators. The woman said she didn’t want to have sex, but he forced her to anyway, the Tribune reported. “She kept saying to me that she felt that it was her fault, because she was not assertive enough,” an officer wrote in the report. “I explained that all she needed to do was to say no, and that should be enough.” She also immediately told police that she did not wish to press charges, only that she wanted the incident on the record “in case he did the same thing to someone else.” Ajayi was never interviewed by police. He has no criminal history in Utah aside from traffic violations. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ex-wife-of-suspect-arrested-for-murder-of-mackenzie-lueck-says-he-once-threatened-to-have-someone-come-kidnap-and-kill-her/ar-AADK5Jc?ocid=spartanntp

tolijascro:Indeed, people change. Sad for what he did to the poor victim (imagine killing and burning a human being); and also sad for his folks back home in Nigeria. |
tolijascro:I know it's been a long time, but I am curious to know what you think of him, based on what you knew about him back then. |
tolijascro:So are you going to tell his mother? I hope she can take it. |
Nigerians abroad must be good ambassadors at all times. Ayo is a proper Nigerian; he came to America as an adult. Good that so far his Nigerian-ness has been largely mute. But that will certainly come into play after the investigation and during the court trial |
Recall the recent news about Ayoola Adisa who killed a girl in Salt Lake City, Utah. The post can be found here: Ayoola Adisa Ajayi Kidnaps, Murders And Burns A Lady In The U.S. https://www.nairaland.com/5271180/ayoola-adisa-ajayi-kidnaps-murders Ayoola Ajayi: Putting it straight - I am disappointed but not surprised. I met Ayo (as he was called) in 2009 in Utah. I was working at xx-xx-xx while he was a student of computer studies and had just arrived from Nigeria. We became close and I introduced him to my young family. He was a regular visitor to my home and was very respectful as many Yorubas are. Personally, he was a nice guy, or so I thought. During one of our many discussions, he told me his mother is the pillar of his life and that she was involved in the politics of his home state of Osun. He did not talk much about his father, but from our discussion I could sense his parents were not in the best of terms. Ayo was often broke and did odd jobs to keep life together. He was also off and on at the university and had several time gaps in his educational pursuit. But he was versatile and techy, and could fix cell phones and computers. He was also into body building and showed me some moves to lose weight. He got into many Caucasian (‘’white’’) girls and was a Mormon (Latter Day Saints) at some point. He joined Mormonism in order to be able to meet a girl to help him regularize his stay in the US. He pretended to be a good Christian, but I could see through him, being a Nigerian myself. Long story short, he used girls as he pleased, ostensibly to help keep his stay in America legal. But he could have stuck to one girl and still achieved the same goal. I left the area in 2014 and we were in touch via Social Media (SM) for a while until we lost touch. Meanwhile, he informed me via SM when we kept in touch that he joined the US military as an IT Specialist -he was discharged sometime after (I do not know why though). He also did not eventually receive a degree, as he did not complete his university study. He got married to one of his numerous girls but divorced sometime after. I guess he achieved his dream of becoming an American via marriage - another used and dumped. Still, he was good enough to be working at some tech job and took a mortgage on a home, until he was arrested last Friday. Prior to his recent travail, Ayo had a few brushes with the law. He had a couple mild traffic issues back then. Also, in 2014 he was accused of sexual misconduct, but the alleged victim declined to pursue the case. So, it was dropped and he had no criminal record on him, until he was arrested this June and charged for kidnapping a girl, murdering her, desecrating her body, and obstructing justice. These are serious charges, and he could be in for the death penalty or at the least, life in prison. Put mildly, Ayo may never see the outside of the prison walls again, if found guilty. He most likely will be found guilty. Forensic and witness evidences are stacked against him. Although Ayo lived a chequered life, I was still shocked he could go the extent of doing what he is being accused of. But I am not surprised, as he was all over the place, which often does not end well. Ayo, you had the full realization of the American dream starring you in the face. And you blew it away into smithereens. Why did you do it?

Adelaide2:Igbo amaka |
Babalegba:Yorubas do travel too; even with their so called ''large land mass''. What does that tell you? Who land mass epp? The difference is that Yorubas for the most part end up flipping burgers abroad in large number, compared to Igbos ![]() |
Okoyeebows:And how is your own history like on Nairaland? Your name Okoyeebows sounds like a good name for a legendary ethnic champion. |
IamPlato:This about sums it up. You have concluded the matter. Of course, he is academically (math) okay. But he is not smart and he has no vision. |
Okoyeebows:Would help if you take life easy and understand a joke when you see one. |
Omoluabi16:When you do the same thing for 25 years, how can that be smart? It's just like Nigeria itself floundering for 50+ years and achieving nearly nothing. He should have taken a cue from his colleagues who left. Now imagine how many years left of him to retire. All that effort will end up in retirement soon, if not already. |
TempleHouse:You asked me a pointed question about what I have achieved in life. I gave you a pointed response. Now you say I am boasting. I responded even though this post was not about me and you chose to personalize it. Well, if you want to discuss me, send me a direct message with your real name and credentials. Then we can start from there. |
Omoluabi16:That's exactly the way I see it. I understand our "lucks" as human are not the same. But he had options that he failed to utilize or even envision. Simply put, with all due respect to his age, he is not smart. |
TempleHouse:Loser! And blind too. His visionary colleagues who left to study abroad were Okoros. They aren't hawking gala. |
sassysure:Some (like "TEMPLEHOUSE" actually found it motivating. Irony of life |
TempleHouse:I achieved a heck of a lot, actually. Including a PhD in 3.5 years, over 70 publications, a humongous house in Trumpland, and a dollar salary in 6 digits. I hope you die of envy. BTW, the fact that this story inspires you shows how visionless and unambitious you are. Loser! |
Sezua:But not as a PhD holder until 2016. His PhD will be deployed in teaching for only a limited amount of time due to age. |
Tomoyayi:See! He is taking his vengeance on innocent students. I have no pity for him. |
Sezua:Actually some education are societally valueless. Like this one. That man will be retiring soon if not already. Given his age ( he talked about studying in the era of Old Western Region), his PhD which took 25 years to obtain in 2016, will only be useful for less than 5 years. That's total crap. |
BiggyB242:He killed his own time. He has now (in 2016) fulfilled his dream. But we all know where dreams end up. See what his colleagues did in the quote below Following the termination of his program, his colleagues, Prof. H.N Odogwu and Dr. Mrs. Ogbonna, who were also faced with the problem of a supervisor, switched to other field and went abroad to continue respectively. |
bamirotola:He wasted his own time. |
backnbeta:100% agreed. His research topic would already be an exhausted and expired area if inquiry. |
Following the termination of his program, his colleagues, Prof. H.N Odogwu and Dr. Mrs. Ogbonna, who were also faced with the problem of a supervisor, switched to other field and went abroad to continue respectively.Smart Okoros with vision. Unlike the visionless Oluomo who spent 25 years to obtain a worthless Nigerian PhD at an old age. |
Following the termination of his program, his colleagues, Prof. H.N Odogwu and Dr. Mrs. Ogbonna, who were also faced with the problem of a supervisor, switched to other field and went abroad to continue respectively. His colleagues left and got their degrees much earlier, even becoming profs. Apparently the man is very visionless. His ambition is narrow and too simplistic. Just be a math teacher. Just obtain a PhD for the fun of it. A paper PhD. Truly wasted man. See as e dry like bonga fish |
