From the moment Obaseki coup to remove Oshiomhole failed, I knew it would be tough for him. He should have decamped to PDP during the height of the crisis. Now he will likely lose the APC ticket.

Watch your tongue there. Nnmadi Kanu always claims SS as part of his Biafra, he even included them in his map, and the people there joined his rallies and sit-at-homes back then. So how am I wrong in what I said?

Indeed. Must you people lie about everything? Most populous tribe in Lagos yet they can't present candidate under either APC or PDP and contest governor's seat in Lagos, or even Deputy governor. What kind of useless 'most populous tribe' is that? How many igbos are in Lagos assembly? How many igbos are local government chairmen and counselors in Lagos? Don't provoke me this night ok? I have nothing against igbos but this your lie is nonsense and foolishness.

PoliticsEbonyi Seeks Approval For $80m Islamic Bank Loan by AtikuNetwork(op): 11:51am On May 15, 2020
The Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, has presented a request of the Ebonyi State government to borrow US$80 million from the Islamic Development Bank to the Federal Executive Council.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed disclosed this while briefing the media on Wednesday’s virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

She said the ministry presented the request to council on behalf of the Ebonyi State government for the construction of the Abakaliki Ring Road, which would link the 13 local government areas in the state.

“So, while the federal government is the one borrowing from the bank, the federal government will be on-lending this loan to the Ebonyi state government.

“We have done our debt sustainability analysis that proved that Ebonyi State has the capacity to repay this loan, which is provided on the basis of liable plus and also with a long tenure for repayment.

“The Ebonyi ring road connects 13 Local Governments in the state as well as the neighbouring Cameroon Republic.

“It is a major road that will provide access to the citizens in the states, from farmers to the markets, and it will enhance economic activities in the state.”

The minister said that neighbouring states to Ebonyi would also benefit from road when constructed.

PoliticsMaritime Workers Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Wike's Arrest Of 20 Dockworkers by AtikuNetwork(op): 11:51am On May 11, 2020
•To shut nation’s ports by Wednesday, Give 48 hours ultimatum

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike at seaports over the arrest of its members on essential service by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.

Already, the union has given 48 hours ultimatum, starting from Monday to the Rivers State governor to release the dockworkers or they will be forced to shut down all nation’s port by Wednesday.

The union made its position known in a statement titled: “Unlawful arrest and detention of dockworkers who went to the port to carry out essential services by Rivers State Task Force on COVID-19 lockdown,” which was signed by the President-General of MWUN, Com. Adewole Adeyanju.

He said: “We wish to use this medium to state that if in the next forty-eight (48) hours starting from Monday 11th May 2020, nothing is done to affect the release of our members, the union will have no option but to withdraw our services in the entire nation’s seaport, terminals and jetties in solidarity with our detained members as an injury to one is an injury to all.”

The statement read: “The leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has received with shock and disbelief the arrest of over 20 dockworkers and other that their whereabouts cannot be accounted by the Rivers State Government on Saturday (May 9) on their way home after the day’s job.

“We were informed that the affected Dockworkers were returning from essential service operations to BUA/PTOL terminal, Port Harcourt and were unlawfully and forcefully arrested, and detained by Rivers State Taskforce on enforcing COVID-19 lockdown.

“All entreaties/explanation made by our members to the task force team led by the Governor Nyesom Wike, that they were on essential services fell on deaf ears although they presented duly signed ‘Essential Duty Port Pass’ issued by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

“Instead, the governor, mocked them that they should go to Abuja and work.

Consequent to the above, most terminal operators, shipping companies and port users in Port Harcourt port are closing down shop as a direct result of the unsavoury activities of the Rivers State government for not allowing port workers and other stakeholders to work.

“This has direct implication to the nation’s economy and a clear threat to the employment and job security of port workers including dockworkers and shipping companies’ employees. As direct consequences of governor Wike’s action, some terminal operators have closed down their operations till further notice leading to loss of jobs by Nigerians and dock workers.”

The union added: “Consequent to the above, we call on President Buhari, the Minister of Transport – Mr Chibuike Amaechi Rotimi and other well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on Governor Wike to immediately release our members – dock workers and others were arrested and their staff bus impounded on Saturday 9th May 2020 while on their way home having rounded up the day’s work.

“Already, there is restiveness in the entire ports across the country and this appeal to release the arrested workers is to douse the rising tension in the ports which could snowball into full-scale industrial unrest if not quickly apprehended now.”

Anambra news

Emma Elekwa Onitsha

No fewer than 4,000 shops belonging to traders of Glorious, Independent and Progress markets in Onitsha South local government area of Anambra State may soon be submerged by flood following threatening gully erosion in the area.

Over 13 traders have already lost their shops to the erosion while others might also be losing theirs if no urgent step was taken to check the menace.

The traders under the Onitsha South Shop Owners Traders Association of Nigeria (OSSOTAN) said half of Haruna Street have already been submerged in the erosion, leaving small portion of the road where only pedestrians passed to enter the various markets located around the Onitsha main market.

Conducting newsmen round the affected road, President General, OSSOTAN, Chief Eric Uwaoma, accompanied by the Chairman of Haruna Street Traders Association, Mr. Emmanuel Idoko, said Jaruna Street remained the only road that linked the whole markets in Onitsha South Local Government to Onitsha Main Market and other markets in Onitsha North through the Niger Bridge Head.

He said, “Unless the government intervenes, traders coming from outside the state, particularly those crossing River Niger will no be able to access Onitsha Main Market, Sokoto Road Market, Bida Road and other markets located in Onitsha North Local Government Area.

“That road is very important and that is why we are appealing to Governor Willie Obiano, Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Wealth Creation, Chief Uchenna Okafor and the President General of Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA, Chief Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu to help us repair the road.

“Let them, as a matter of urgency save the road and over 4000 shops from being submerged by the erosion now the rainy season has not started fully.”

TravelCovid-19 Curfew: FCT Apprehends Night Travellers From Neighbouring States by AtikuNetwork(op): 2:24pm On May 06, 2020
The Covid-19 lockdown Enforcement Team of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Administration on Tuesday night intercepted vehicles conveying over 43 passengers to different parts of the country.

The occupants of the vehicles, largely commercial buses had breached the night curfew imposed on the territory and were heading to Kano, Niger and Kaduna states, while a few of them from neighbouring states were also heading to some parts of the FCT.

Chairman of the Enforcement Team, Ikharo Attah who disclosed this Wednesday in Abuja said the violators were all apprehended at the popular AYA Roundabout in Asokoro District of the FCT.

According to him, the drivers and motorists were immediately turned back and escorted by security personnel out of the Federal Capital Territory.

“Some of the FCT bound passengers, including a woman and her two children, came in from Benue state. Despite the curfew imposed by the president, many persons are still adamant on breaking the order” Attah lamented.

He called on enforcement officers in states contiguous to the FCT to wake up to their responsibilities by ensuring that motorists do not cross their checkpoints during the period of the current ban on interstate movement.

Attah queried why “security men would allow violators of the presidential order to travel freely at night despite the numerous checkpoints mounted by various security agencies across the country.”

“Also the team met a lady who was robbed and stabbed by a suspected ‘one-chance’ driver. We took her to the Maitama Hospital where doctors attended to her at the Emergency Ward”, Attah added.

See, I like igbo people. But truth is some of you people are too loud. And you must come to terms with the fact that not everybody shows the kind of desperation some of you show here with your hypings. All over Nigeria people are making donations bro. How many of it can be showed on Nairaland? Not every rich Nigerian that is giving palliatives cares about showing it off on Nairaland for PR and ego purposes or to score cheap tribal points. Believe it or not, some private Nigerians have donated more than what is being shown here but they didn't call photographers to come and show it off on social media. We all have different approaches to life bro.

Kano dethroned Lagos on this particular result. The Kano infections may even be more than Lagos by now as the spread there seems to have gone out of control. It has already overtaken Abuja. The North is really taking a hit, with 70% of the top 10 states with highest infection rate. With more testing, it will show that most if not all states have it. At this rate, no state will be spared. Chai!

HealthGhana Records 271 Fresh COVID-19 Cases — A Week After Lifting Lockdown by AtikuNetwork(op): 9:04am On Apr 27, 2020
https://www.thecable.ng/ghana-records-271-fresh-covid-19-cases-a-week-after-lifting-lockdown

Ghana has recorded 271 new cases of COVID-19, a week after lifting the lockdown in Accra, the country’s capital city, and Kumasi.

The cases which were confirmed on Sunday brings the total number of cases recorded in the country to 1,550.

GhanaWeb quotes the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as saying that while a total number of 11 people have died from the disease, 155 have recovered.

The service said 62 percent of infected persons are male while 38 percent are female. It said 84 percent of the cases have no travel history.

Last week, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo lifted a three-week lockdown on the basis of “improved coronavirus testing.”

The Ghanaian president had said nonessential businesses in Accra and Kumasi could reopen but under guidelines of social distancing.

He said Ghanaians should make use of face masks in public places.

“In view of our ability to undertake aggressive contact of infected persons, the enhancement of our capacity to test, the expansion in the numbers of our treatment and isolation centres, our better understanding of the dynamism of the virus, the ramping up our domestic capacity to produce our own personal protective equipment, sanitisers and medicines, the modest successes chalked at containing the spread of the virus in Accra and Kumasi, and the severe impact of the poor and vulnerable, I have taken the decision to life the three-week-old restriction on movements in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Kasoa, and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and the contiguous districts, with effect from 1am on Monday, 20th April,” he had said.

At the time the president lifted the lockdown, Ghana had 1,042 cases of the disease.

The country is the first to lift the restriction on movement in the West African region.

Foreign AffairsRe: We Must Stop Borrowing And Start Printing Money For Our Development- Paul Kagame by AtikuNetwork: 12:50am On Apr 24, 2020
grandstar:
You want Nigeria with inflation rates in double digits to print money? Don't even think it.

You seem to have ignored the fact that inflation is comatose in these countries.

These countries have been hawkish about inflation for decades. They have an inflation target of 2% maximum yearly. If inflation was to exceed these figures, the Central Banks will immediately increase interest rates in order to reduce the money in circulation. This action may slow down the economy or even tilt it into a recession but it usually effective in bringing inflation below the 2% mark.

It is because inflation is now either dead or in deflationary territory, they can now print money. Even if inflation stirs its ugly head, it may not rise beyond 2%. Were it to do so, the Central Banks may be forced to bring it down again below 2%.

Does this printing of currency have a negative side? Of course, it does. The dollar lost value against most major currencies when it introduced quantitative easing. Yes, it does have its downside.
Inflation is 'comatose' in those countries (as you put it) because they write/make and bend their rules at will, so you will probably never live to witness otherwise because they are always ready to rig their economic performance indices to always never get to that tipping point that would ordinarily threaten or collapse the economies of '3rd world countries', even though we all know they have flouted every rule in their sacred 'economics notebook'! Who will hold America accountable for it's unmanageable and staggering debt levels? The same World Bank that is its puppet? Oh please.

Nigeria and Africa need to come up with a more localized developmental model that won't be dependent on the 'dos and don'ts' of the IMF and World bank, the same rules and institutions that keep us perpetually going about begging for bailout (and later debt forgiveness) from them since we just can't ever seem to do anything right by them or in accordance with their lofty standards of economic management.

Now look at how China was able to seize the initiative by coming up with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), as an alternative to the WorldBank/IMF. They didn't grow the balls to do that by doing bambiala to IMF or WorldBank. They had to assert their independence over their own economy, and the West had no choice than to leave them be.
